In my college years I spent 3 years working for this corporation... so i know a bit about the store inventory and expectations... The location in San Leandro is a bit dated and small in comparison to the more updated and freshly built stores. Overall, this location lacks cleanliness and variety. The customer service is comparative to their stores appearance... simply lacking... ,If you find yourself closer to the south bay, you are better off at the one in Union City... mainly because the store is double in size and far cleaner... If you aren't a Michaels buff, you should know they typically are 2 holiday seasons ahead of schedule, for example, in July they are bringing out Halloween and even some Christmas items. This can be a plus to get a jump start on things, or a minus if you are seeking a last minute pick up! Always check on line for a coupon! Michaels usually will have a 40% off any non-sale item each week... they will not offer the coupon in the store... but you can use your phone to provide the skew. Michael's carries everything from seasonal decor to cake decorating products... they have a great dry and synthetic flower selection... And their fine arts selection is decent. They also have some great kids crafts! (i would not use them for custom framing orders, they are over priced and usually take a few weeks because it is outsourced) read more

Michaels is the place to go when in search of craft items. They have free project brochures, classes to suit your interest, paints, frames, artificial flowers, and any type of decorations you may need for a current holiday or occasion. Certain items can be a bit pricey. My suggestion...write down what you are looking for or what you need ahead of your visit. This will avoid you getting sucked into buying more things on a "spur of the moment" mind frame. It's always been hit or miss in regards to the isles being free of clutter or items being tossed in their wrong place. Customer service could definitely use some help. Michaels is great, they have almost every art supplies I needed. Staff are very friendly and seem to know where most of the stuff are located. The only downside of this store is that the parking lot is always full due to the store is located in a very busy plaza. However, if I really do find a parking spot, it is still going to be difficult to park the car because the parking space between cars are very narrow. read more

This Michaels does not honor their sale prices. The signage clearly stated 30% of Recollections and Happy Planner accessories. I had to go with the cashier and show him the sign. He stated that signage referred to 'those' Recollection items, not 'these' WTH? This Michaels stinks! The only reason that I shop here, is because it is the closest one to my house. If I have a reason to be near either the Union City location or the Dublin location, I will wait to shop there. The San Leandro location is always difficult to find parking at, it's always a mess. I can't remember the last time I didn't see boxes cluttering at least one aisle. This store is always dirty! A couple of weeks ago I called to see if they had an item in stock that I wanted to purchase, when they said yes, I asked if they would hold it for me, that I would be there in a half hour. They said they could not hold it. Okay, fine, so I went in anyway found the empty box that you have to take to the cashier to get the item from security. Had to wait while they searched high and low to see if they had any of the item left. When they didn't have any of the item left, they told me to call another store and have them hold it for me. When I said I called this morning and they told me it was against their policy to hold items, this employee told me they do it all the time. Sounds like not everyone is on the same page. Also, the other poster is right, you have to have the patience of a saint when shopping here, because the lines are always slower than than the fermenting of a cask of wine! read more

Michaels is great, if you need yarn...... I don't come in too often, I guess my craftiness doesn't require multiple visits, just yarn. Just my luck that I suddenly need something other than yarn. I was the chosen one to come up with favors for my friends baby shower. After some online shopping I came to Michaels for some basics. I was dismayed at the emptiness of the baby shower area. They do have a dedicated section, of empty prongs where product should be. Also the pre-cut tulle only comes in white or blue. Thank goodness she's having a boy! ( I had a mini nightmare of strangulation by gauzy product and my inability to cut perfect circles ) I ended up finding most of what I needed at the dollar tree and online. Place kind of sucks in comparison to the one in Emeryville... this one feels more seedy and run down, less selection, and more children running around distractingly. I was very disappointed in their selection and how their cheap, broken items were still being passed off at no discounted price. They also were having a "sidewalk sale" which means that everything outside was supposed to be 80% off of what was marked, but that proved to be a lie. It seems that the price was "already priced at the discount amount" on the tag, which is very confuzzling, because why else would they have a sign that converts the prices? For a craft store, and I love arts and crafts, and I am a graphic designer and artist, I always can find something to do usually in a Michael's store. Here, the things that seemed interesting were all overly over-priced. Their bargain bins were junk. Their selection was limited. Over all, I would say go to the Michael's location in Emeryville, CA, if you need to get to a Michael's to get your craft on. But overall, this store was boring and overpriced. read more

I'm so use to the Michaels in Fremont and this one doesn't compare. Everything seems so cramped and most of the time things are somewhat of a mess. I don't know if it's because there's always a pack of older women going nuts trying to search for their arts and crafts of if it's just an older/smaller michaels. So I shop at michaels all the time, this one and the one in union city. I was in the area with a friend of mine so we decided to stop by the store since we both are big artists. For about 30 minutes or so we were looking around the store and cracking innocent jokes together, maybe a little louder than I normally do but nothing to purposefully be distracting or disrespectful. Throughout the store I had been picking up a couple items to buy. Then this worker (Angelique) approaches both of us and asks if we have a parent with us. WE ARE 19 why in the world would I need a parent to shop with me at Michaels. She then goes on about us messing up the store (we hadn't done anything wrong to my knowledge) and not purchasing anything (which we had both planned on doing) and how we were being bad customers and this and that. I clearly was offended and she said "I'm just saying" and walked away. I put down everything I was going to buy and walked out. This worker made me so upset and mad that I cried in anger on the way out. In no way would I purposely mess up a store or be rude to the employees there because I've worked in retail for years already. I know how much it sucks to have to put things back and deal with "annoying" customers, but it is part of the job to be kind and stay professional. This woman was nothing like this. So disappointed. I ordered a tree on line at 12:30 Nov 28th, 2020. I recieved confirmation of my order right away I knew they'd be crazy so after not hearing anything for 3 1/2 hours I drove over. I asked about my order as soon as I came in at 3:30. . I was told she'd have it next, in 5 minutes. 30+ minutes later I watched the last 7.5 ft multi color tree go out the door. Why? Because the floor merchandise was not pulled when I asked about my order. Again, I understand it's a crazy time of the year. With that said, management should have had more than one person pulling on line orders. That person should not have said she'd take care of my order in 5 minutes then tell me, once the item was sold out, that it was beyond her control. Own your mistake please. I've always been a fan of this store, even before I started working here. I've never had any customer service problems or complaints for this location. Whenever I needed to find something, the staff members were very helpful and assisted me when I needed it. Their employees are also very friendly. customer service is horrible.. I went there on 05/21/11 to look for these specific mini cupcake cups that their Emeryville branch had. They only had the standard sized ones. So I go to the register (forgot her name but she's wears glasses) and asked if she had some in the back. She said "well whatever is out is the only things we have" so I asked her if she could call the Union City branch to see if they have the small ones. She told me that she needed their number which was odd, so I look it up on my phone and give her their number...then she says to me "oh I meant the product number"...umm cant you just call them, give them a discription of it and read off the barcode? She didn't..she didnt call them and didnt understand how to contact another store to find what a customer is looking for.. So I did it and was easy as heck to do...some people need to learn customer service and to know how to assist customers. Laziness doesn't get you anywhere... I started crocheting last month and I'm ready to start my 2nd project this week. I went to a Michaels in san jose yesterday but walked out empty handed. I tried this Michaels in San leandro since it was only a few miles from home and i needed more yarn. I had a 40% off coupon and intended to use it. When i got to the cash register(mind you, only 3 people in front of me and 3 registers are staffed on a Saturday morning) the gentlemen told me about today is the only day i can save 50% off 1 item. I had 4 items in hand, and the discount automatically took off the most expensive item! I was super happy about that because most other retailer will take off the lowest priced items. So yay! at least there is a michael's here in the bay fair mall area... makes it convenient, but it's pretty crammed and upon entering the store your sense of smell is just suffocated by the strong, artificial 'spice' smell... not completely sure where this smell comes from... if it's popuri or candles or what... i don't find it pleasant at all... they have a little bit of most things that michael's normally carry, but i prefer the emeryville location over this one. check-out was quite slow too... at least the staff was friendly... seems like a lot of 'regular' customers come here as i'd hear several times staff and customers call each other on a name basis... read more

it's ok....first off, the parking is just a pain in the ass....i'm waiting for a spot and some biotch jumps in front of me to take it. i didn't want to do too much in fear she might have a gun or something....the area is just like that.... once inside the store, it's very gloomy and dark and somewhat disorganized. there are not many floor associates to assist in what i was looking for, so i roamed the entire store to find what i needed...a simple piece of felt for my son's school project. it took me about 20 minutes to find it! the only thing good i would say was the fact that it is near my house and the checkout was fast. strangely, i bought one piece of felt, but the receipt was a mile long with unnecessary coupons... read more

This Michael's is terrible. Today wasn't my first visit to this location but it will be my last, G-d willing. My first order of business was to use the bathroom once we made it into the store. I'm eight months pregnant, so being able to use the bathroom in a timely manner anywhere I go is EXTREMELY important to me. When I get to the women's bathroom I notice it has a keypad and is locked. Okay, great. I find an associate and ask her if I may have the key code to the bathroom. Her response is, "well, no, you can't, but I can call someone to open it for you." Eye roll. Another associate opens the bathroom for me and tells me to use the second stall because she's getting toilet tissue for the first stall. Okay, fine. I crack open the second stall and the toilet is packed FULL of seat protectors covered in human feces. So full that I can't risk flushing it for fear of it overflowing. And the first bathroom has no toilet paper. Now I'm just pissed off and I don't use the toilet because I felt waiting until I got home was a better option. My main complaint with this location are the people who work here. Every time I come here someone wants to pass the buck to another associate. No one even tries to pretend they kind of enjoy their job and it just makes for a generally unenjoyable atmosphere. They don't corral customers into lines so we all just kinda end up standing around shrugging at each other, hoping we're in a line SOMEwhere. The product isn't terrible, although it feels like they have less of a selection than other locations because they're an old style store, but the customer service is just awful. I also hate having to find someone to let me into the bathroom because I'm an adult and I don't have time to track someone down so I can go pee. read more

For the framing department 5 stars, but let me tell you about the girl at the register answering phones at 9-10am on 12/7/18. She literally sounds like an Elementary school student answering phones for her moms floral shop who has no idea how to talk on the phone or work at a retail shop. Her inability to answer a question so simple is mind boggling. I called around 9am because I wanted to check on an art piece I was having framed. Mind you this is the only number listed on yelp or google. The prompt even tells you to stay on the line for help and gives no department choices. She answers and I asked her if I could check on the status on art I was having framed. She says "umm I'm not sure because this is the register you called" then just waits for me to respond like that's some kind of satisfying answer. I hung up because she was speaking so softly I couldn't barely hear her and didn't wanna deal with it while driving. I called back at work about 45 minutes later after the VM that it was ready came through. My question was if I could send someone to pick it up that wasn't on the receipt. Same girl same answer then silence. I say, "So this is the only number to call so could you speakerphone someone or something for me? How are you supposed to do business with someone like that answering the phone? She literally guessed her way through how she could get an answer for me then put me on hold. I am a business owner and would be mortified if one of my employees answered a customer like that, way to be lazy!. Anyway. Great framing department gal with the glasses and blonde hair. Could have told customers as they were lining up or even have a sign indicating where the line began ... We shop at Michaels all the time but have found this particular location to be THE worst as far as employees and customer service. Recently we were standing in line to purchase items, along with 4-5 other customers. There was one checker and 2 other girls standing behind a counter laughing and talking...basically everything except helping to check out customers. We opted to leave the items...and the store. For a company who's business has started declining, I would think they would be more concerned with keeping the customers they DO have. We like to shop local so that the jobs stay local however this location needs corporate oversite....or to close. read more

My go-to craft place for anything from paints to drawing supplies! My only dislike is the parking situation since they are one of many shops in the complex and it makes it frustrating when all you need to get is ribbon. The employees are helpful when finding aisles and well known products but otherwise you'd be better off just walking around yourself. I've never been offered help walking around but I only ever see employees at the registrar. They offer craft days, usually for kids but it's still nice. read more

I love arts and crafts and little nick nacks that this store has to offer. The price are somewhat reasonable and they have a wide selection of things. The thing I hate most about this specific store is that when your ready to purchase your items, it take forever!! I mean one time I went and waited in line and there was only 5 ppl ahead of me with a few items in hand. Why did it take 30 mins for the cashier to ring those 5 ppl up. Omg can you move any slower! Seems like this location is making some attempts at improving. The supervisor who used to bark at the staff is no longer there. The new employees seem genuinely helpful and courteous. There are plenty of reasons I don't like coming here. Still, I always do, because where else am I supposed to go to satisfy my crafting needs? The parkinglot outside is annoying. People just bumping their music, sitting around, taking up space, not looking before backing up. Maybe because it shares the lot with Dollar Tree and Ross? The organization of the store itself is somewhat lacking. I've been coming for over a year now and still don't know where to find everything. I find it extremely annoying when sale signs are up, but the sale is over. Is it so hard to walk around removing old signs when the sale is done? There have also been plenty of times when I can't find the price tags. They don't put prices on their items, only on the shelf, which makes it confusing at times. You have to be very careful when picking up items here, not only because they are often dusty/dirty, but also because there are a fair number of damaged and defective items. Staff members aren't really around when you need to ask a question, and there sure are a lot of unsupervised children running around. My biggest gripe is with the custom framing. I know custom framing is a racket wherever you go, but the chart they have on the wall with estimates on custom framing jobs is extremely misleading. Two bright spots on my most recent visit: the young woman, Michelle, working in the custom framing section was very sweet and pleasant to deal with. She almost made it okay to shell out over $100 for 2 small framing jobs. Almost. While at the register paying, the assistant manager (I think) came back with a price check on one of our items and gave the cashier a coupon giving us 20% off our purchase. He absolutely did not need to do that, and I thought it was an incredibly generous gesture. Unexpected! read more

Well let me just say I believe I have experienced more entertaining Michaels Arts and Crafts stores. The good side the employees know where everything is compared to the shopper because I see the shopper looking in every aisle, while the employee can just locate it by looking in one aisle and pointing out where it is. Next they give you good recommendations on what to get if their is at least on more product. Some of the prices are pretty fair, others aren't. Another down side the store to me is a little disorganized with some belongings open, or just messed up once in a while. They at least do a pretty decent job to clean up any mess, or even fix it. I'll just have to say that it takes a while for this to happen. ONE more thing, the line usually backs up, and takes a while for them to do a transaction. read more
