Stopped in for a cold drink while out walking today, and was pleasantly surprised to find they have Italian sodas, seltzer, and carbonated "refreshers" in addition to hot and iced coffee drinks. Seems like a fun and creative menu with seasonal drink options. Refresher was nice, just like you'd expect, but a little on the sweet side for me. I got a second cup of seltzer to "cut" the drink and it was perfect. Front room is cozy with moderate noise and activity from the coffee bar and front entrance. There's a second back room that was cooler, quiet, and with lots of open tables for studying. I came on a weekday afternoon, but there was plenty of open seating even with ~10 customers sitting in. Wow what a wonderful coffee house. Stopped in twice the same day. First in the morning for an amazing cup of herbal tea. Returned later in the day for lunch. This is amongst the best coffee houses in Madison for ambience, food quality, and service. It has been a few years since I came through, so yesterday I was thrilled to be reminded of where I wrote papers and hung out while doing my masters thesis. I ordered an iced chai and was entire amped to see they had cannoli in the case! As a certified Sicilian cannoli snob, my hat is off to Michelangelo's for their cannoli. The folks behind the counter were also kind and welcoming -- the woman behind the counter/cashier who grabbed my delicious cannoli and the man who made and handed me my beverage -- pleasant experiences all around. A spacious cafe with lots of delicious cold and hot drinks. Even when busy it doesn't feel excessively crowded or noisy if you want to enjoy a high quality beverage made with good ingredients. Not great if you're in a rush though because it does take some time to fulfill each order and though the staff works pretty quickly, there's still a high volume of items to create. Though the coffee here is delicious, I do wish that the ordering / pick-up system was a bit more streamlined, because many people may have similar drink orders but it's difficult to figure out when to pickup a drink since the drink name, rather than a first/last name or number is called. Besides the location, one of the other reasons to visit this spot is due to the great vibe inside which is lively with nice decor as you're surrounded by artwork on all sides. read more

The majority of the dining space is tables and chairs, and most of them have enough space to spread out your books, papers, and laptop. However, outlet space is limited so be sure to charge your devices beforehand. The staff is really friendly, though service can be a little slow. I waited about 15 minutes for my beverage and food item and the shop was only at 1/3 capacity. I got a strawberry, banana, mango smoothie with an orange juice base and it was yummy, albeit a bit expensive (over $7 for the smaller size). I've had their chai in the past and it is fantastic. I highly recommend it. The pumpkin chocolate chip muffin I had today was mediocre. Too dry and crumbly for my taste. I'll probably try a different pastry next time. read more

While in downtown Madison, Wisconsin, my husband and I stopped at Michelangelo's Coffee House to get an afternoon snack. We got a mocha chiller and a brownie. The drink was very good and the brownie hit the spot. I love the art house vibe in this coffee house. The only negative was that there was no air conditioning on this warm summer day. My partner and I stopped here over the weekend to grab a coffee during our stroll around downtown! This place was BUSY!! Just about every table and spot on the couch was full. And shortly after I ordered I could see why! They have great drinks and quick service. Very friendly staff! Their atmosphere is very artsy with a modern flare. I love it! It definitely attracts the young, vibrant and student crowd. Their prices are very comparable to a modern local coffee shop. A bit on the high side... but honestly very comparable. You'll pay $5-6 for a good coffee about anywhere you go. Totally worry it! Their baked goods looked a bit sad all wrapped up, if you're looking for fresh baked goods, I'd go somewhere else TBD. They definitely specialize in their flavors and specialty coffees. For parking, this is right on state street, so parking is tough, I'd recommend parking a bit further and walking... life is about the journey not the destination! read more

After exploring the capitol when it was 10 degrees, and my face was frozen, we decided it was time for something to warm us up. We stumbled upon this cute coffee shop. I was shocked at the prices, we got five warm drinks and it was only $20 with tip. I don't know about y'all, but city prices would NEVER, it easily would have been $50. The whole place is aesthetically pleasing, my favorite was the portrait of the Michelangelo portrait with a coffee. The staff was very friendly as well and helped my picky self pick out a plant based drink. I think I got a matcha tea, it was good and so was everyone else's drink. We spent the next hour siting and conversing at this cute spot. I think there is something so pleasing about a high roof with art around. It creates a nice look to the place. I was with some Madison locals and they had brought me here and I wasn't paying any attention. I stumbled in again this weekend without knowing this was the same place, and was super happy when I recognized it! I was super hungry but had already had 4 shots of espresso, so just asked for an egg and cheese panini with hot water. Service was as friendly as it gets. The panini bread looked like a bagel? I decided to get the Monkey Mocha which was banana, chocolate espresso, and steamed milk. I asked for skim milk. And I got it iced. The drinks were up pretty quickly and mine was delicious. I stopped here on a road trip. I ordered a matcha. While they have two sizes listed/displayed, the barista informed me that for a matcha, they only offer the large size. When he said this, I actually laughed heartily for about 20 seconds while the barista stood there flummoxed but politely not interrupting my catharsis. I was humored enough to buy the drink anyway. It was too sweet for my taste, but for student populations who are conditioned to Boba maybe it hits the spot. It seemed like a good vibe to do work in. It's definitely a college hang out joint - very reminiscent of the coffee shop I worked out of in college. Staff was friendly but didn't offer us free here mugs even though we said we were going to sit and stay. Nice selection of sugar free flavors - I'm always happy to see SF almond on the menu. The cafe looks and feels like a college town cafe - clean but not really clean. Bathroom was quite messy for my liking. Latte was ok - I mean I've had better but I could drink this one. The SF almond saved this one. No latte art and very bubbly loose foam on top. I get the attraction of this place but not somewhere I'd seek out again. Unroasted: college town coffee shop are always tricky. They can be really good or really bad. It's prime location from the state capital building. The decor is pretty dismal but it is big.
