This is THE spot for pre-farmers market caffeine! We stopped in right at 9am on a Saturday and saw they have a walk-up counter serving some of their top, basic drink options and basic pastries. Inside, one can order from their full menu. Their menu is small but mighty having a little something for everyone. I got a hot Maple Latte with oatmilk. The flavor was subtly sweet but paired great with the espresso. The maple syrup was sourced locally and made in house. I'd be very curious to come back and try the other specialty lattes. My husband got their Homemade Chai Latte. It was cozy in a cup and had nice spices in it. We shared the Bagel Sandwich which was the perfect portion for a breakfast snack. The bagel seemed to have fresh seasoning on it and the flavors layered nicely together. Overall, this was a great coffee, tea, food stop. Came by on a Saturday so it was fairly crowded, but the line moved fast. The interior of the shop was surprisingly big but pleasant and well lit. They also had a good variety of merch items (apparel, coffee mugs, etc) to browse while waiting in line. They had a blueberry mint flat white on the menu, but since I wanted an iced coffee, the barista was able to ring up an iced latte with blueberry mint syrup for me instead. Super kind of her to recommend! Unfortunately the latte tasted pretty acidic, and I couldn't really taste blueberry or mint at all. My friend got the blueberry mint flat white (which is hot) and had the same complaints, so it might have just been the syrup. So wouldn't recommend the blueberry mint drinks but would be open to trying something else, since the service and ambiance of the shop was nice. read more

Soooo good! Probably one of the top coffee shops we visited on a mini cross country road trip. Friendly service and moved fairly quickly , even with the line out the door at 7:30. I went to the farmers market and was itching for a latte to sip on while we strolled--thank goodness Wonderstate is right on the corner by the Capitol! On a Saturday morning during the farmers' market, Wonderstate has an additional counter taking customers from outside on the sidewalk serving cold brew and hot coffee. If you go inside, the line is long but worth it in order to get iced lattes and other specialty drinks. When we went, they had a Peach Blossom specialty latte that was delicious, but not too peach-forward. You can still taste that the espresso was very high-quality and balanced. The latte was sweet but not too sweet. The inside of the cafe is light and bright and has plenty of booth-style tables if you need a break from walking around the market. A nice coffee shop with a view of the Capitol. It was really empty when I got there when it just opened on Thursday morning and my drink came really quickly. I like how there is a menu of new flavor combinations, so I had to get the black sesame miso cardamon latte. It had a very strong black sesame flavor, so I couldn't really taste the miso. Wonderstate appeared to be hipster coffee shop focused on craft. I just had a black coffee and the vegan cookie, but they were both tasty. A lot of the other reviews state that it is pricey, but I found it pretty reasonable compared to where I live. There's a lot of seating, but it was very busy, so it might be a place best for takeout. Overall cute, but not an intimate cafe feeling if that's what you're looking for. read more

In reflection of our Wisconsin trip (Milwaukee & Madison), Wonderstate stands out as our favorite coffee visit! We came 2x and once had to wait quite a while given it was a busy Saturday with a lot happening downtown, and it was so worth the wait! We loved our lattes! The espresso quality was rich and the drinks not too sweet or too milky, but balanced just right! We tried and loved both the maple and vanilla bean lattes! Staff was friendly, working hard and fast to keep up with the line out the door. The aesthetic is open, bright, and airy. Friday, my wife went to the quilt show at the Alliant Energy Center and I had to kill a couple of hours. I decided to go for coffee and ended up here with a lot of college students on laptops. I had a medium maple latte and found a seat by the window. Service was quick and my latte was in a nice big cup with saucer. Definitely a college hangout with a few tourists like myself dropping in. The state capitol building was just across the streeet. Snagged a bench seat with table eventually because the high seat at the window was a little uncomfortable. Sorry I had a breakfast bar on the way up to Madison because the pastries case was appealing and nearly empty. Although I probably would have had the lox and bagel. Wow! One of the best iced vanilla lattes I have had in a long time. Beautiful spot to work, study, or meet up. Lots of natural light and amazing view of the Capitol. I was ready to pay for a bottle of water when the person taking my order said they have tap water around the corner if I prefer. So nice! I didn't see the tap water option so I was grateful she said something. I had an iced chai latte with oat milk. One of the best I've had! Highly recommend it. I was longing for the original Wonderstate Coffee (formerly Kickapoo Coffee) in Viroqua. The quality and service are the same as the Viroqua store (excellent). The feel is much different, as one may expect looking out at the Wisconsin Stare Capitol. Clean, efficient with excellent coffee. As good as can be, in this urban setting. I need to come here again to give it a proper rating. I loved the ambiance and cleanliness, but I only ordered a regular coffee and bagel with cream cheese. That was okay. My husband got a mocha, and that was really good. The service today was slow. I wanted a refill of my coffee, and the charge was $1.50 more for a refill of their regular drip, so I opted to not get a refill; especially since I was just sitting here enjoying the coffee, and it was already pretty pricey. Some of the best coffee in Madison. Definitely my favorite place to get a dark roast, as it has never tasted burnt, just rich in flavor. I also really like that they have oat beverage sitting out that you can add to your coffee. The baked goods have also always been pretty good.
