When my now husband and I began looking for a wedding photographer, we weren't sure where to start. Luckily, we discovered Michelle Lytle Photography because Michelle is a co-owner of the wedding venue we chose. We loved Michelle's photography style as we explored her website as she offers a mix of traditional posed photographs as well as unique perspectives. She described her approach as photo-journalistic. Michelle was able to work with us to find a package that fit our budget and captured the images we would cherish. On the day of the wedding, we met Michelle at the Lytle House (where we were dropping some items off) and she traveled with us by train to Loyola University Chicago to capture some photos of the two of us before heading back to the venue for family photos before the ceremony. At Loyola, we ran into an issue with one of our boutonnieres and -after catching the moment for posterity- Michelle helped us get it properly situated. We only spent about 20 minutes at Loyola, but Michelle was able to capture us in various poses, with a variety of backdrops as well as candid moments walking to and riding the train. We had about 30 minutes set aside for family photos and Michelle moved everyone around with a gentle command to capture all of the posed photos we listed in advance and some we hadn't thought of. Although our ceremony and reception were all in one location, Michelle expertly captured us from different angles and with different backgrounds to differentiate each moment. After family photos, Michelle took the two of us to a unique location under the 'L' tracks nearby to capture a few more couples shots. This served the dual purpose of getting us out of the venue as more guests arrived. During the ceremony, Michelle moved quickly and stealthy about capturing so many beautiful photos from various perspectives that when we received the photos later, it seemed like there must have been multiple photographers. After the ceremony, we had requested a photo of us with all of our friends and family, again Michelle was able to gently usher everyone together to capture a big group shot. After that, Michelle captured candid shots of our guests mingling, the table settings, and food truck set-up. Since we had only booked Michelle through cocktail hour, she found a moment as she wrapped up to congratulate us before ducking out. Michelle captured all of the key moments of the ceremony and cocktail hour but also had a deft eye for subtle details. For example, she snapped a close-up photo of the anklet my mother was wearing, which happened to be a gift my grandfather had given to my grandmother. It was small moments like these that brought a flood of emotions as we reviewed the photos online about 2.5 weeks after the ceremony. Michelle also sent a preview of her favorite shot the morning after the wedding, which was a great surprise on the way to our honeymoon. All of the photographs Michelle captured were processed beautifully in black and white and color and provided to us in an online gallery that is available to us forever. Michelle offers options to purchase photo books or prints, but also allows a limited number of downloads so you can do what you wish with the photos. Michelle was wonderful to work with and the images she captured will be treasured forever. The only "regret" we have is that we decided to save some money in our budget by not booking her through our entire reception, which is the only thing we would do differently. Where to start with this one? I absolutely loved working with Michelle and Robyn. Michelle is super professional; she's been doing this in Chicago for a long time and it really shows. She's super hilarious but has a no nonsense attitude when it comes to what she does (and does it well). I spent A LOT of time researching photographers and one thing that stuck out about Michelle was that she wasn't afraid to be straight to the point - creating a timeline, calling out best spots for photos, being super fair when it came to negotiating. I not only liked her but I really respected her. Another thing I found was that a lot of people are excellent photographers but not good business people. Michelle and Robyn are both! My now husband and I felt totally comfortable the whole engagement session - taking shots at the bar where we met, finding some cool spots in Wicker/Logan for the urban vibe. Again, we were all set within an hour and have amazing shots that we love. Fast forward to day of wedding - Michelle gets it DONE! A good wedding photographer is part listener, part drill sergeant. I mean we're on a timeline, people! My wedding party thought she was hilarious and liked that we got it done efficiently and well - she knew the shots and didn't need to spend a million minutes positioning us "just right." Her and Robyn are a perfect team and the day really captures us and our personality, especially around the love of our family and friends. My husband and I didn't need to look like we belonged on an Anthropologie catalog cover - we just wanted to look like two better, happier versions of ourselves on one of the best days of our life. I will preface this by saying I HATE BEING PHOTOGRAPHED. I am super awkward and not photogenic and I do not like being center of attention. But I got married, so all that had to happen. My husband and I planned our wedding from out-of-state, and Michelle was the first and only photographer we talked to. We had to Skype her, and even through a computer screen, her personality put us totally at ease. We also went with her because her photo journalism style meant less stiff posing stuff (AKA WHAT I HATE DOING). We had an engagement shoot at Revolution Brewing, which was perfect because it gave us a chance to get used to working with her AND the pictures came out beautifully! Let me begin by acknowledging that I thought long and hard about whether or not to submit this review. But after a great deal of consideration, I felt compelled to do so. In fairness to Michelle Lytle Photography, it should be known that my gripe is in regard to a Christmas gift certificate I gave as a gift in 2011. A long time ago. I stumbled upon this gift certificate while I was sifting through my late father's documents. Long story short: the gift certificate I bought was meant for my brother and his young family. My father accidentally took it home with him. My $100 holiday gift was going to the wrong house. This gift certificate has no expiration date on it. So I called Michelle to set up a photo shoot for my brother. Michelle said yes, I could set it up. But she was unwilling to honor the original terms of the gift certificate. Instead, I had to pay current rates. Michelle said I had to pay a total of $480 for the photo. My $100 gift was going to cost me a lot, lot more. I was expecting a modest increase in the cost, but not full rate. Granted, I hold myself accountable for a great deal of the confusion. I didn't follow-up with my brother with respect to the photo shoot. But I live in Arizona. And photo shoots are not top-of-mind when I'm speaking to my brother. I am neither bitter, nor angry, nor vindictive. Rather, my feelings are hurt that Michelle's inflexibility in her rates has forced me to question her motives. Is she a photographer who is passionate about her profession? Or rather, is she a hard core businesswoman who is in it for the money? read more

There's nothing more nerve wracking than waiting for your wedding photos to come back. Or so we've learned. Did I look okay? How was my hair after that dance? Was my corsage a wreck after the ceremony hugs? We found Michelle after a horrid experience with another photographer. We were in anti-photog mode. But Michelle seemed like a breath of fresh air. I actually liked the quality of her work, and didn't feel like I was settling on price. She already had commitment ceremonies in her portfolio. Not to mention she worked nicely with our budget. And we didn't even meet her until the day of but just knew it was going to be a good deal! And the day of the wedding she was phenomenal. She had our pre-made list of photos we wanted handy. Quick to shoot. And none of that "tilt head slightly, now smile...smile...I need more SMILING" bullshit that we've had experienced with other photographers. During the ceremony, I have no idea where she was but she got great shots! And during the reception she was flitting around everywhere with the insanity of friends going on. Somehow she managed to get at least 2 shots of every person there. And in a few weeks time we got a look at our photos on an online site, and then later on she delivered the DVD with all the shots on them for us to do with them what we like! She also does awesome pet pictures, which I think is going to be our next move! Trust me, if you need a laid back and not overpriced photographer that does good work, call up Michelle! My now-husband and I found Michelle when we were looking for a photographer who would be willing to shoot a small civil wedding ceremony, and we could not be happier that we found her. Michelle was so easy to work with and so efficient - she always responded quickly to emails, made the whole booking process very simple, and was extremely prepared on the day of our wedding. She did an amazing job of organizing our attendees to make sure we got through our shot list with our families before the ceremony itself, and then stepped back to take a bunch of candids during the ceremony and immediately after. Her familiarity with the venue and preparation made me feel like we were in great hands all morning, and a number of our attendees also told me how great they thought she was. We got our photos back quickly and accessing them is so simple. And the photos are absolutely gorgeous - she managed to get good posed photos of everyone (not easy in large groups!), and also captured some beautiful moments in the candids. Ok, I'll start by saying our wedding hasn't happened yet, so I"ll follow upo n our review after the wedding.. but that said, we've already used Michelle for our engagement photos, and she is great!! very artistic eye, makes you feel super comfortable, and the end results are beautiful! I love her photojournalism style of shooting, and the artsy shots, that aren't super posed looking... She has also been great to deal with, whether we call or email her we ALWAYS get a response within a day at most ( usually an hour). So, I didn't actually book Michelle for photography services. I'm in the throes of my own wedding planning, and have been searching through (what seems like) hundreds of Chicago wedding photographers. I found Michelle's website and fell in love right away, and thought every single photo in her portfolio was so tasteful and just my style. Michelle wasn't available for our date, and we were in the running for possibly booking with her associate, Erin Hoyt (whose work looks equally as stunning), but we were out of luck as she too was unavailable. Even though it turned out that Michelle wasn't available for us, she was so attentive and kind via email throughout the whole process to keep us informed of any potential availability, etc. She even gave me a list of recommended photographers with similar styles and price range, and I think we're going to go with one of those - YAY! I still find myself looking through Michelle's and her teams photos on their website and on their Facebook page, hoping to find just ONE slightly bad one that will make me feel better about not being able to book them, but I can't find any. My husband and I were nothing but impressed with the quality of the photos and the service we received from Michelle. From the moment we met her to discuss our plans for our wedding photography, she listened to our ideas and gave us exactly what we were looking for. She rocks!! After many phone conversations with photogs and previewing galleries, after I talked to Michelle I knew she'd be perfect to work with. She customized a package for my now husband and I for our wedding and we also got a pretty spiffy deal on our engagement/ family shoot(we have 2 sons). I went into this looking for a photojournalistic approach and most importantly someone who was able to joke around with us and allow us to be ourselves. I described my hubby's groomsmen as the hangover guys and I needed to make sure someone could handle hearing a curse word or 3. She was on top of things as far as being prompt in email responses and was an angel with my 11 mos. old Jaxon trying to get him to smile for pics during our family session. On the big day, she and Emily her assistant were too much fun. I felt like they brought out such a fun side to our wedding party and were constantly shooting. Although this is way overdue, I need it to be known how amazing Michelle and Robyn are. My husband and I got married in June 2015 in upstate NY (which Michelle was not the original photographer for), on a day with nonstop torrential downpour -- so all of the outdoor pictures I had hoped for did not happen. Upon returning home to Chicago, I found Michelle's beautiful site, and loved how prevalent dogs were in her work, so asked if she would be down to redo some of the wedding pictures I had originally wanted, if my husband and I dressed back up (and this time would be including our dog). THE RESULT: Truly the most beautiful, stunning pictures I could've ever hoped for -- her work is flawless, and she and Robyn have such a skilled eye for beautiful composition. I loved everything about our little pseudo-wedding shoot, she made sure it incorporated everything I wanted, and was so good with our dog as well. Not only that, she and Robyn are incredibly prompt in all correspondence, and so kind, respectful and funny. We booked Michelle for our October 2014 wedding at Loft on Lake and the pictures turned out amazing! We chose her because of her awesome candids and we were not disappointed. Her pictures are so natural - she didn't do too much of the staged, cheesy stuff, which we liked. The day of, Michelle kept us moving and made sure we stayed on schedule. They were also very flexible about the end time. We originally planned for 6 hrs, and we were able to add 30 min at a prorated cost the night of without any issues. When my now-husband and I were looking for a wedding photographer and we found Michelle, we got along with her very well. She was very friendly; she invited us to her home and showed us beautiful examples of her wedding work. We felt very comfortable with her and we felt that we could relate to her. Once we hired her for our wedding, she offered us a great deal on engagement photos, which we took advantage of. We took them in downtown Chicago; she met us on a Sunday at both of our conveniences and it was a great session with wonderful photos. We weren't entirely sure what we wanted, but she had some great ideas for us. In a timely manner, we received all of the engagement photos on disc. One important advantage of working with Michelle is that she will give you the rights to the photos. Leading up to the wedding, I was in touch with Michelle frequently via email. She was always accessible and gave me prompt and helpful responses. She had me create and send her a "shot list" of all the photos I definitely wanted for the wedding, and sent me a couple examples when I wasn't entirely sure what to do. We hired Michelle for 5 hours with a second shooter. On the day of the wedding, she and her partner were right on time and got immediately to work, thirty minutes before the ceremony began. Our wedding shots came out amazingly. We were very impressed by the quality of the photographs. She took everything we asked on the shot list and tons of candids of our guests. I was especially impressed by the photos she took of our reception hall and our decorations, and of our first dances. Michelle was very professional yet friendly, and many of our guests commented that they didn't even notice her taking all those shots. A few guests that did observe her commented that she had the amazing ability to get everywhere and catch so many important moments. Michelle worked so hard the night of our wedding and reception, and that shined through her photos. Not only did we receive a disc of all of our wedding photos (about 450 of them, both color and black and white), but we also received a DVD slideshow set to music of our choice, and the photos are posted on her website for people to view. Michelle was the photographer for my wedding in September 2015. She also took our engagement photos as part of her package and brought second shooter, Robin, with her on our wedding day. Michelle was so much fun to work with from our first meeting all through our wedding day. She is so down-to-earth and funny and easy going. She was planning her own wedding when we decided to hire her and it was great to have someone that was going through it all with you. After our engagement shoot, she went the extra mile and put together save-the-date postcards using photos from the shoot. They were a big hit! Michelle puts all the photos in an online gallery for you to access and it is so easy to use. We just got our wedding photos yesterday - the exact day 3 weeks from the wedding Michelle said they'd be ready. I was able to download both the color and black and white albums to my laptop without issue. The photos are stunning! We just received our wedding photos from Michelle Lytle Photography for our May 25, 2014 wedding (early too!) and they all look AMAZING. It's great that we are able to view them all on her website as well as download or order straight from there. The costs to order photos are super reasonable. The photos were taken by her associates Erin Hoyt and Brian Green and they were just how we imagined they would look, very urban and awesome. We planned our Chicago wedding from out of town and they were really great about emailing and even video chatting to set up the wedding day plan. They're really flexible with where and how you want to take photos so that helps a lot (because you never know what the weather will be like in Chicago!). But they also had fantastic suggestions on where to take them and the posing was very natural/normal, not super awkward like some wedding photos. Plus, Michelle and Erin are insanely nice and professional so that makes everyone feel good! It was great that they have 4-hour minimum since our wedding was all in one place and at night. Also, we had the option to extend services by the hour during the wedding, which we ended up doing at their hourly rate. Great flexibility once again! I reached out to Michelle about helping my sister and me recreate pictures from a children's book for a Mother's Day gift. Although this review is well overdue, the value of it should not be overlooked. Over the last few months, I worked on creating the perfect engagement for my now fiance. After much deliberation, I decided to propose at the outdoor café within the Art Institute of Chicago. Being that it was a surprise engagement, and a moment that I wanted to remember forever, I decided to hire a photographer to capture the moment. I reviewed and sent emails to many photographers throughout the Chicago area. Michelle immediately responded not only to my email, but called with excitement as well. Through her emails and our conversation, I could sense that she truly understood just how important the day was for me. She even insisted on doing a walk-through of the site with me to ensure that we were on the same page. After we met at the Art Institute, I felt completely secure with Michelle and had no doubt that she would do an amazing job. Michelle listened to my vision, was attentive, and really showed that she cared about the proposal. The day of the proposal went better than I could have ever possibly imagined in large part to Michelle. Michelle brought her partner with to capture candid moments of us from different angles. From the moment we entered the museum, to the moment I proposed, and finally, to the moment her family surprised her (they flew in from California that morning), Michelle captured surreal moments without us ever feeling like she was watching us. A friend of mine gave me Michelles name. From the first meeting we had with Michelle, we were hooked! She was very personable, extremely talented and her prices can not be beat! We did our engagement pictures with Michelle in November 2012 in downtown Chicago. Being that we're huge Bears fans, all we told Michelle was that we wanted some pictures around Soldier Field. After taking pictures around the stadium, Michelle lead us to other places in the area that she thought we'd love.. and we did! Our pictures turned out amazing and we had them back within 2 weeks! Our wedding day was no different! Michelle showed up early and was ready to shoot by the time we had agreed upon. Not only is her rate very budget-friendly, but she is very professional and personable. She responded to emails promptly, did multiple check-ins leading up to the wedding, and was open in offering her suggestions on venues for taking pictures.
