Sashimi omakase
Cherrie T.

Michi Sushi is one of my favourite go-tos for my sushi cravings in North York neighborhood. It is tucked away on Willowdale Avenue (beside Paisano). Very causal, rustic atmosphere, and the staff and chef are friendly. Their fishes and seafood are always fresh; we enjoy ordering the sashimi omakase, aka chef's choice, and they serve uni! I used to always order this flaming sushi roll where they lit the roll literally in flames in front of you (didn't see it on the menu this time). The cold soba was also delicious; I love my soba with lots of wasabi ^^ It was very thoughtful of the staff to give the two of us one bowl each of broth with ice cubes for dipping the soba :) Overall, we always enjoy our time at Michi Sushi. We will definitely visit again soon :)

I came here on a Friday night as a group of 7. The place was very busy - basically full when we first entered, and so busy throughout that they had to decline a group/told them there would be quite the wait considering no one was about to leave and a couple reservations were set for later in the night. The place itself didn't look that big at a glance, and in terms of cleanliness, the seating areas and tables were clean but you could note the dust/small spider webs near the vents. Overall, this is a pricier sushi spot but I definitely appreciated the quality of the food. I ordered the SUSHI DINNER DELUXE which included 12 pcs of sushi plus either 6 tempura rolls or 6 spicy salmon rolls, and I chose the spicy salmon rolls as they're my favorite! They were so good, really spicy, which I love. The assortment of sushi was quite nice including salmon, tuna, shrimp, BBQ eel, calamari, and truthfully, some others that I can't distinguish just by look/taste if you don't tell me what they are. However, despite not usually being adventurous with all types of raw seafood, I must say everything was very fresh and nothing had a "fishy" odor to it! I should also mention that my meal came with a miso soup and salad, which everyone got as well, minus the one person at our table who ordered a specialist roll for their dish. Service was fair but I didn't feel it was the most friendly. Sometimes I felt like our server was a little impatient with us/looked like she didn't want to be there. Fun fact: 10% discount when you pay with cash! Candies included upon payment (never had that kind before but they were really good fruity taffy type candies).

Michi Sushi is a really quaint local Japanese restaurant just North of Sheppard and Willowdale. We were recommended by a few friends to give it a try and was not disappointed. There isn't much parking around. There's some perpendicular street parking on the street just South of the restaurant. I believe there is also a back lot that you can get to via the narrow driveway/alley beside the building. We ordered the Softshell Crab Roll, Black Dragon Roll, and Sake (Salmon) Sashimi. The softshell crab roll was pretty standard, satisfying, but nothing extraordinary. The Black Dragon roll was also pretty standard however I noticed they rolled the interior dynamite roll NOT as an uramaki (rice on outside, seaweed inside). The sauce worked really well with the roll and the tempura shrimp in the roll was really crispy. The salmon sashimi was REALLY fresh and not at all fishy. They give you pretty thick cuts which is amazing. The staff was also super friendly as they frequently topped up our water and tea. As at Feb 2023, they have a 10% cash discount on bills subtotalled $50+. Overall, it is a bit pricey but you get your value in the filling and quality/freshness of products. It's great to find great quality local restaurants to support. If accessibility was better I'd definitely return more frequently! Highly recommend!

It was alright. I wouldn't recommend, it just didn't taste great and at the price point I expected better. The service was OK, delivery orders are prioritized over seated guests so you're waiting 30 minutes for your food. The ambiance was standard small place sushi spot.

A gem in the North York community - this small, cozy restaurant offers some of the best and unique selection of sushi available with high quality ingredients so I would recommend going with a small to medium sized group so that you can try multiple things on the menu! Expect a wait due to the limited number of seats and tables but it's worth your time! Service is excellent and don't be shy to ask what they recommend. Our table got different michi signature rolls to try. My personal favourite was the Salmon Dragon and Gold 888! I will definitely need to come back and try their daily lunch specials in the future. Note that they are closed on Tuesdays.

I started visiting this place since it was called another name. Regardless of the name/ownership change, the food quality here has been great. The lunch I had here this weekend was actually the first patio meal we've had this year. The two rolls we ordered - Dancing Eel and Crazy Girl - were yum. I personally prefer the Crazy Girl as it has a richer flavour and of course, lobster in it. The Chiken Karaage and Gyoza were amazing too. Chicken wasn't greasy. Their signature rolls are actually pretty big. So if it's two of you planning to get sushi and snacks, one roll should be big enough :) Definitely recommend.

Amazing place, staff and food! My girl friend and I had ordered a lot of food knowing it will be a lot for two tiny girls. We managed very well and the friendly staff even gave us extra pieces on the Omakase sashimi as well as a beef tataki on the house at around 9:40pm and the restaurant closes at 9:30pm. Obviously they didn't rush us at all and let us enjoy our stay until 10:30pm. It certainly won't be our last time.

3.5* for the food, + .5* for the service I've come here a couple times now and it's a cute little Japanese restaurant. The quality of the ingredients is there, and they have a good selection of sake too. I'm always a fan of yellowtail collar which is filled with delicious meat, especially with a touch of lemon and ponzu sauce. Even though we're not regulars, the chef always tries to greet us and say bye to us. He apologizes profusely whenever menu items are even just a little delayed.

Went to Michi Sushi for dinner the other night. The servers were very polite but one was very forgetful and forgot to come back to take our order and forgot when I asked for more tea. The restaurant was full when I arrived and the food took very long to come but nonetheless I had a good experience. The restaurant offered complimentary edamame and the food was tasty and the seafood tasted fresh. I really liked how they served the sauce for the agedashi tofu separate in order to prevent the tofu from getting soggy prior to arriving at the table. There isn't any parking other than street parking nearby however make sure you double check the street parking times in order to avoid getting a ticket. I believe it was 12pm-6pm no parking but I could be wrong. They have wifi available and the password is: joonchef

I do not have enough good things to say about this particular restaurant. Go! You won't regret it if you're looking for delicious food, gorgeous presentation and overall all good vibes around. Seriously. This restaurant reminds me of being back in Japan. It's very cozy, has little polaroid photos taken of happy customers who have eaten there in the past. Where do I start? 1. Food. Mouth watering. My boyfriend and I ordered the beef sashimi, the sashimi combo (smaller size) and the tempura udon, as well as green tea ice cream for dessert. 2. Tempura - they only serve you 2 shrimp tempura with the udon in deliciously, perfectly slightly sweet fresh broth [maybe Dashi? (a fish broth?)]. I understand why. I've never had tempura as Amazing as the one I ate (gave the other to my partner Matt). It was not your typical tempura shrimp, it was so much better (didn't think it was possible!). I want to eat Michi's (on Willowdale) for the rest of my life. It was That good. Next time, I'm thinking of ordering the seafood udon in soup and a side order of the tempura shrimp (tempura veggies may be equally as delicious. I'll need to try.) 3. Sashimi was very fresh and you could tell from the photo that they are quality cuts. My favourites were the torches tuna (I think tuna, ‍), the octopus and the deep orange salmon (which I think is the high quality salmon). My partner liked the same as well as the tuna that was not seared. 4. The beef sashimi may sound risky to someone who has not much experience with Japanese cuisine (at least, that's what I think), but I think for those dipping your toes into starting to try raw fish, and like steaks cooked medium rare/more rare than medium cooked, you will love this. I must say that it's even more delicious with enough wasabi in my soy sauce that made it a notch above of just spicy enough! 5. The staff and the atmosphere is exactly what I've been looking for in terms of "The Japanese Experience. THE experience where it sends me back to my trip to Tokyo". Our two female Korean, who I thought were Japanese, were incredibly sweet and very accommodating. I'm sorry I do not know how to spell either of the names you told me, but you two elevated my partner's and my overall dining experience. I'm going to keep returning as many times as I can. For a very special treat, I'm going to splurge on their Omasake (where the chef prepares sushi/sashimi according to what they think will be fresh and most delicious! I don't know if they specify how many pieces you get. I've had the Omasake experience in Chicago and Seattle at top restaurants, and I'm confident that Michi's here will create an equally out of this world's experience. It is a pretty penny though, I think $120/person. I think it will be well worth it to celebrate a very special birthday or promotion, graduation or just if you feel like spoiling yourself like crazy (Treat Yo'Self from Parks and Rec) PS: would be nice if the women's toilet would continue to flush without holding it down the whole time. Minor annoyance, better than no toilet! PSS: I think my partner, Matt and I are going to start an Instagram food account [we're working with the following ideas, but if you have other suggestions, I'd love to hear them! #ilovewordplays. Or ideas so far: @relate-eatable or @UltimateBias_restaurants (BTS inside joke, we are only immature Army fans )

Caterpillar, Orangeville, call 911, spicy tuna

I really enjoyed the sushi I got from Michi Sushi! I went during the week at 3pm so there wasn't anybody else there but I didn't mind! I was told my takeout sushi order would take 20 minutes and it did! The Orangeville and spicy tuna were my favs. I'll definitely be back for more takeout and probably a party platter or something. Very cute and intimate on the inside.

Sashimi Deluxe

Michi Sushi's sushi and sashimi are fresh and plump and melt-in-your-mouth good. We went there for a mid-afternoon treat and got: - Sashimi Deluxe: Chef's selection of 25 pieces of sashimi. Really fresh, portion size was enough for 2 people, and it was "plated" beautifully. - Willowdale Avenue Roll: We asked for a recommendation and this roll was it. Standard tempura roll with a nicy spicy sauce to add a bit of a kick. But the big plus was how it was "topped" with an assortment of raw fish, which made it extra special. So given the rave review, why only 4 stars? Simply, it's the price. The sashimi deluxe was $37 while the roll was $19. And yes, it was a generous serving size but not enough to make you $65 full. But Michi is really about the quality, so if you want some fresh sushi/sashimi and are willing to pay up, definitely stop by.

Great place to go! I love sushi and this is one of the best sushi Restaurants that I'll go ! Fish are very fresh and I love the Madai head which I think is not on the menu, you can just ask for it, and the tuna so very very fresh! The only thing I have to remind everyone is that is not easy to find parking, please expect some time to look for parking and please make reservation before you go since it is a small restaurant!

Taki is a fine dining Japanese restaurant located in the busy commerical areas of Richmond Hill…read more We recently had lunch here for a special occasion. The restaurant is super quiet and they offer great quality of food with great service, and the price is expensive if you choose to order sukiyaki set (expect $80+ per person). You can choose between sushi sets at different price level or sukiyaki from the menu. This suits the need of our group given some people prefer sushi but some couldn't eat raw food. They also offer a couple of limited appetizer dishes such as tempuras and unagi don. If you booked the sukiyaki table and want to order sushi, you need to call them in advance to notify which sushi sets you want. We tried the sashimi and sushi courses at $55, which included miso soup, 5 pieces of sashimi, 8 pieces of sushi (squid, toros, salmon, scallop etc.), handroll and matcha or black sesame icecream at your choice. The sushi is smaller than average, suitable for small eaters. The course is totally worth the money. I love every piece of sashimi and my favourite sushi include the scallop and the squid. Everything was super fresh. The dessert was also having the perfect sweetness level for me. In addition, we also tried the sukiyaki for two ($110), which includes mushrooms, cabbages, great quality of Angus beef, yummy tofu and udon. Again, all the material was with great quality and super fresh. I especially liked the sweet sukiyaki soup, the tofu and the udon. We also ordered some shareable dishes including chawanmushi, unagi don and cod. Cod was cooked to perfect (soft and flavourful), and unagi don had quite decent portion. It would be better if the unagi could be softer from my personal opinion. Chawanmushi was mediocre. Overall, I strongly recommend this restaurant to fan of Japanese cuisine. It meets different people's needs by offering both cooked and raw food options, and the sushi set definitely has great value for money.

We were ushered through the tranquil restaurant and seated at the sushi bar, a zen ambience. We chose the $55 sushi+sashimi omakase lunch course, and it didn't disappoint. The eight pieces of nigiri featured a somewhat typical selection of fish (and hotate/scallop), but slightly edgy and unique in the choice of seasoning and flavours, prepared by Chef Takinami with all the pomp and ceremony and you would expect from fine omakase. The pacing was excellent, we never felt rushed from piece to piece; the wait staff were attentive as would be expected from a high-end Japanese restaurant, on par with omakases that cost three times as much. Overall, incredible value on the meal, for both the food and experience. We couldn't help but look around at what the regulars were enjoying (in addition to their omakase nigiri) -- botan ebi nigiri with deep fried shrimp heads, chawanmushi, cooked dishes featuring monk fish livers, tempura appetizers and more... some great ideas for our next visit!

It was extraordinarily quiet when we came upon this place on a Saturday night. Nevertheless, the food was absolutely delicious and arrived piping hot and well portioned. As expected from this popular chain, the katsu was superbly crispy on the outside while still maintaining the tenderness of the meat inside. The variety they have on the menu - including various sauces, cheese options, and udon - will keep you coming back for more. The most remarkable aspect of this particular location, though, was the quality of the service. Our waitress was so attentive and sweet, patiently answering all our questions and never leaving our glasses even close to empty. We were offered free refills of the miso soup as well which was a nice touch! Highly recommended to anyone shopping at Yorkdale nearby - skip the overcrowded food courts and mall restaurants and head on over here!

They have fun, interestingly crafted meals. Two of which we had ordered are the Carbonara Udon $17.50 and the Brick Cheese Katsu $22.90. The meals are not only cool and exciting, but the taste of the food can also properly back up the gimmick. The Carbonara Udon has creamy carbonara sauce and comes with 2 tempura pieces. For the Brick Cheese Katsu, I ordered the Gold & Silver Katsu to be able to sample both the Cheddar cheese wrapped inside the pork loin (Gold Katsu), as well as the Mozzarella cheese which is the Silver Katsu. It is a great combination of hot, fried food with a cheesy, creamy filling. Service was honestly a mixed bag. On many occasions, we found ourselves having trouble getting the waiters' attention because the staff are situated at the far back of the narrow restaurant. It was a good thing thay the staff are very courteous. They attended to and took care of an isolated request we had during the time we were there. The menu may be a bit more pricey compared to other similar establishments. Almost all of the meals start off at the $20 range.

We ordered this time the Yorokobi set for 2 and upgraded the sushi to brown rice for $5 extra and upgraded the green dragon roll that came with the meal to volcano salmon roll (which is one of their popular special rolls) and paid the difference. We also added a hamachi carpaccio just for more more protein for my SO because he thinks it might not be enough, but we were left super full. I love that the sushi wasn't loaded with rice and it was thinly included, we did mention that we usually don't like that much and the server said they can even adjust the rice content in the sushi.... We didn't confirm to adjust it but perhaps they went with it because rice is perfectly thin in the maki and less than usual for a nigiri, which is great because otherwise I don't know if we would have finished the meal. $5 to upgrade to brown rice for the sushi set that didn't have that much rice is still IMO a bit steep. Other that, the sushi is fresh, the special rolls are eye catching and tasty and the hamachi carpaccio was good too, LOVE the presentation. I think the best thing here is still their special rolls though! Server is so personable and made sure we were well taken care of. Only feedback I have here is the miso soup that with the Yorokobi set is way too salty I couldn't finish mine after a sip. Ambiance was clean with little Japanese decor throughout. Hay Sushi you're an All Star you've got your game on, well played,…read moreHay Sushi you're a Rock Star you deserve to get paid. That's right, I had to fuse some famous song lyrics into this review to make it as original and stellar as the food at Hay Sushi was! A simple Google search will tell you that traditional Japanese food, or washoku, is renowned for its nutritional balance; it emphasizes seasonal ingredients, small portions, and the ichiju-sansai (one soup, three sides) structure, which includes rice, miso soup, fish or soy, and vegetables, often eaten until 80% full. - Hay Sushi does just that! Everything they serve is understated yet undeniably hits the spot. I had a 3-course Winterlicious meal that was a delight with every bite and every course. Sometimes with set menus you might worry that the quality, quantity, or variety is less than satisfactory but this was far from it. Granted, they had run out of 2 items from their appetizers by the second day of Winterlicious but every last remaining item on the menu was different from the rest and offered a new dimension for your taste buds. The nori tacos are a testament to the fact that incredible things can come in small packages. They come discreetly served in their own little armchair-style pedestals, and guess what?, they do deserve to be put on pedestals as the blend of flavours and textures achieved with each one is truly remarkable. I had the spicy salmon nori taco and the veggies nori taco, both were unbelievable. So here I am wondering if the nori tacos were a one-hit wonder and the second course comes with it's full array of perfectly arranged 3 sides, main, rice, miso soup. I had the Sapporo Style Soup Curry Teishoku. This was not spicy but had a uniquely charred taste supplemented with vegetables such as squash, mushroom, pepper, onion, and lotus root. The chicken was succulent and even the rice was spot on. If you thought sides would be unremarkable, you would be wrong. The daikon, green vegetables and pickled cucumber, carrots, and raddish all pulled more weight than I ever thought was possible. The freshness and impact of each food item even came down to the ginger that was probably the most memorable ginger I've ever had and I never thought ginger alone could ever be that impressive. At this point of the meal I'm far more than 80% full, but hay, there's still dessert! And yes, dessert did not disappoint. I ordered a seemingly simple sorbet but lo and behold the sorbet was truly made with Asian pear and tasted like an explosion of the said flavour; not too icy, not too sweet, just right. If Japanese food truly prides itself on providing balance in nutrition, ingredients, and flavour, Hay Sushi should be very proud indeed

Tips: - Make a reservation, as this eatery can get busy…read more - This place has bento box sets every day from 11 am till 4 pm. You get a lot for a great price. On Sunday, I got together with two friends for lunch at Hana Don. Markham has a location that I have yet to visit. My friends come to this one at CF Fairview Mall often and recommended that we come here. I booked a reservation for three at 12:30 pm online. It was easy. I drove over to this mall, which has changed a lot. There are more eateries that face Sheppard Avenue East and are connected to the mall, but you don't have direct access to it. The Moxie's is still there. I didn't recognize the others. Parking was challenging. This mall was busy. I ended up finding a spot close to the former Hudson's Bay store. I then walked over. I entered the eatery and a man greeted me. I let him know that I had a reservation under my name. He found it and guided me to a table in the corner of the eatery. My friend walked in and saw me through the window. They came over and we chatted while figuring out what we wanted to eat. We got these items: - Chicken katsu udon - Yuzu matcha soda (me) - Sirloin set (me) - Chicken teriyaki set - Dynamite roll One of my friends had udon for the first time. It was in broth. The chicken katsu came on a separate plate. I had a piece and it was tasty. She loved her meal. The udon was chewy. It looked good. My other friend was recovering from a cold, so we kept things safe by not sharing anything with him. He got the chicken teriyaki set and ate everything up. He ordered a dynamite roll and we had his California roll that came with his meal. I was pleased that his appetite was in good shape. She and I shared the California roll. It was delicious. It had imitation crab and avocado. This place was generous with ingredients in this roll. It was fresh and satisfying. I got the yuzu matcha soda. It was heavenly. I stirred it up before I drank it. It had the perfect balance of citrusy, sweet yuzu with good matcha and fizz. So refreshing! I loved my sirloin set. The sirloin steak don was exceptionally filling. The steak morsels were flavourful and perfectly cooked. It came with a lot of rice that was perfectly steamed. This set came with sashimi mori. I loved the salmon, but the smoked fish wasn't the best. The veggie tempura was excellent. The eggplant, sweet potato, and squash weren't greasy. They were crispy and yummy. The amazuzuke was excellent. I got white radish cubes that were pickled in what tasted like yuzu. Each cube cleansed my palate. I need to make some at home! The miso soup was excellent. I loved the cubed tofu. The salad was okay. The dressing tasted bland compared to everything else. It needed more miso or something. The sets were a great deal. The quality was superb. They are available every day between 11 am and 4 pm. We were too stuffed to get any dessert. The ube tiramisu intrigued me. I'll need to find room to enjoy it next time. It was busy here. The downside was that we had to flag our server to get more water and the bill. Otherwise, everything that we consumed was yummy. I paid with a credit card. I tipped and was done. Yay! I used the washroom before we left. The women's washroom was clean. No issues. This eatery is a great place to catch up with friends over delicious food. I'd like to come here on a weekday and gauge the parking scene. I'd return to try more good eats and drinks. (187)
