It was my family's favourite gathering spot before COVID-19 happened. I remember my family really enjoyed their udon noodle soups set with California rolls, and I used to like their sushi sets a lot. We all loved their little complimentary thin noodle soup with tempura bits as the appetizers - it was always the best part of the meals. Although small, Kaikaki has a charming and cozy environment with lots of wooden decor. I remember the service is always friendly too. It came with 2 servings of this noodle crunch soup and miso soup, no salad. Overall food was good but service could be better. Definitely understaffed so not their fault. Tried out this sushi joint on the way up to Muskoka. My husband and I shared a small sushi/maki boat and it was pretty good overall. The quality is kind of like AYCE places, like their tuna and albacore nigiri, but it wasn't terrible. Good variety of nigiri and maki and we came out of it completely stuffed. Appetizers are the usual miso soup and this crunchy noodle sampler that I've never had at another sushi joint before. Service was good and our server dropped by every 15 minutes to refill our waters. Decor is very quaint and pretty, with private little wooden booths. Would be a great dinner spot to get to know your date better, but I've been with my husband too long now and we just chowed down with a couple comments here and there. :D read more

This place was slightly hidden in the plaza but they serve decently priced Japanese and Korean dishes. They have a pretty big selection of sake. I loved the decor of the place! We were seated at a booth seat but it was quite chilly since it was located near the front door. I liked how the booth offers more privacy and sound seclusion if you wish to talk about your secret business dealings haha. Ordered a small sushi sashimi maki boat for $43. It came with a tempura shrimp roll (really liked the sweet sauce that was drizzled on), a California roll, and a salmon avocado roll. Overall the variety of fish was not greatest with a lot of repeats in the sushi and sashimi but quality was not bad. One thing I do wish they would improve on would be the rice. It was a tad bit overcooked. Also the rice on the rolls were a bit more flavourful than the sushi rice. Perhaps it was a different batch or the rice vinegar was not mixed properly enough? Service: 5/5 They were very attentive and came by the table often to ask if anything else was needed. If I am ever in need of a sushi/sashimi fix, I would come again. this restaurant was such a cute and hidden gem with the best japanese dishes! the shoyu ramen had a strong umami flavour topped with the right amount of scallions and pork. the chicken katsu was fried to perfection with the outside being very crispy and inside being very tender. we love this place so much and want to try more items on there! read more

The reviews are good both on yelp and google. So I thought I will give it a try. The price of food is pricey, compared to authentic Japanese restaurant near J-town, and the drinks are even pricier. We ordered a sushi set and a roll, which are very standard sushi from most Korean runs Japanese restaurants, not high end sushi. However, the sushi came out quick, which suggested they were premade. The rice flavor and texture is not good as well. Making it at an inferior level compared to other cheaper sushi place. I also ordered a karage rice bowl. The karage, which is the Japanese version of deep fried chicken, was made with Korean batter and with a sweetness that is totally a Korean fried chicken style. Which to me is a disappointment. The drinks were expensive, the 5 dollars options of some colored beverage tastes very artificial. The imported bottled beer is 12$. So, the food would be at 2 stars rating. I would say that this spot is literally a hidden gem as the store is behind a wall, so the only way would be to park and actually look. I love how cute the interior is, and with the wooden booths to make your experience much more private and intimate. Their menu has a variety of sushi and sashimi dishes, and they have lunch specials that runs from 11:30a-3pm. The menu prices are reasonable so nothing is too overpriced. One thing I like is how their sushi and maki boats offer an option to make it all salmon (for an additional price) which is perfect if you're a salmon lover. Can't believe they provided butter fish "white tuna" & some cheapy clear fish as their sashimi, chirashi! Felt like I was ordering in an AYCE dinner menu... For $17-20 an entree you would think it'd be a bit more premium than giving you the bottom of the barrel fish selections! My bento box was hilarious there was two spaces and they put the soup bowl and salad right on it illuminate the two spot for whatever they could have filled up the space. For this kind of prices I feel like I could just have eaten at an AYCE for couple bucks more, as the sashimi quality was similar to an AYCE sushi joint. This place is definitely a hidden gem! You won't see it on the main road and have to walk into the plaza to find it, but It's super cute and cozy inside. It was a great value and the fish tasted fresh. None of it was fishy or tasted bad in anyway. The Kaikaki Roll is $15.99 which is pricier for a roll but they definitely make it worth it here. Today was a rollercoaster and G especially needed redeeming forces in his life. We chose to go to this place (this was my first time but G has been here before). As soon as I stepped in, I felt like I had entered a fantasy world with beautiful decoration and a great ambience (G has really good taste). We ordered the Canadian roll which was 3.5/5 and the fire roll that was 4.5/5. The first thing that caught our eye when the food arrived was the beautiful presentation (hint: you can eat most of the flowers). We were seated in a booth and it was absolutely beautiful inside. It is very cozy and the perfect spot for an intimate date. The service was really great and they took good care of us. Plus they have really cute totoro curtains (yay!). The overall experience made G feel much better; a definite success story! Kaikaki is the definition of a hidden gem, a warm and inviting restaurant located in the Bayview and Cummer plaza serving up a wide variety of delicious Japanese and Korean dishes. The food is amazing, spanning from sushi boats, maki rolls, and other Japanese and Korean comfort foods. Also, everything is crafted with care and presented beautifully. I highly recommend this place, and hope to visit more in the future. This review is for a recent visit with my family on a Friday evening. *Atmosphere* The moment you step into Kaikaki it has a warm and inviting feeling, with a sakura tree at the front, wooden booths along the side walls, colourful sake bottles with fairy lights strung inside, and dark grey walls. The wooden booths offer a cozy and intimate space with tall walls surrounding the bench seating, almost like a private room of your own (there are hooks for your coat too). The wooden booths are sized either for tables-for-two or tables-for-four, while seating for larger parties is available at the centre of the restaurant. There is attention-to-detail down to the Japanese ceramic soy sauce dishes and plates used which were pretty hues of blue and green. *Service* Service is excellent, and the servers are helpful, kind and friendly. Despite the restaurant buzzing with activity and customers on a Friday evening, the servers still took the time to check-in on us fairly frequently to provide us with tea refills and collect empty plates. At the end of our meal we were even offered complementary green tea ice cream for dessert - it was delightful! *Food* The food at Kaikaki is outstanding, and I could tell that they use fresh and high-quality ingredients in all of their dishes. My family ordered a variety of both Japanese and Korean dishes, and there was something for everybody: dolsot bibimbap ($12.99), unagi don ($15.99), tempura dinner ($16.99), teriyaki salmon and tempura bento ($18.99), and the black dragon maki roll ($15.99). Once all the food arrived, it was such a colourful and incredibly gorgeous spread, and individually each dish was presented beautifully including using yellow chrysanthemum flowers (please refer to photos!). The food was delicious, flavourful and well-balanced, and everyone really enjoyed their meal. I had the bibimbap, and the beef was tender and well-marinated, and the variety of vegetables and mushrooms were tasty too. Everything exceeded my expectations! What a pleasant surprise! We stumbled here accidentally as it is pretty hidden. You'd have to park your car and walk into the plaza in order to find it. Driving along Bayview you will not be able to see it! We weren't overly hungry so we ordered two rolls here - the black diamond and kaikaki roll. Both rolls were gigantic. For the price (approx. 15$ per order), we definitely got the value worth! It seems that it is a fusion cuisine of Korean and Japanese as we saw alot of Korean dishes as well on the menu. However we did not order anything else but based on the outcome of the two rolls we had that night, we will now definitely revisit this restaurant when we roll through the area. Don't be concerned with the lack of reviews on yell compared to other sushi restaurants. This is definitely worth a visit and the price point makes it just right to give it a shot. read more

This place is a hidden gem. It is so cute. The place isn't very big. There are booths on both sides of the wall and in the middle are the large tables. One side of the booths can accommodate couples while the other side can accommodate a group of three or four. We came here on a weekday night for dinner. Not too busy but they did get quite a few takeout orders with the massive party boats. Atmosphere 4/5 I love the decor here. It isn't modern. But you feel homey went you walk in and casual about it. Service was slow, but there was only one waitress working and they were pretty much full house, so I feel for her at least. Good amount of filling but every roll somewhat tasted really similar. Kaikaki roll 3/5 - a dynamite roll like maki with unagi inside and torched salmon on the outside. Roll itself was good but if you were to ask me to distinguish all the flavours, I wouldnt be able to, hence 3. The torched salmon on top also lacked the charcoal flavoring too. You also dont really taste the unagi, and the roll wasnt spicy as they mentioned. Nonetheless I still enjoyed it but the overall toppings did not deliver. The booth was decorated with sake bottles made into lamps and a couple of posters on the wall. You can pull down the curtain for a little more privacy. This place recently opened at Bayview and Cummer. After a recommendation from a family member, we decided to try it! It's easy to miss - it's in a corridor area within the plaza. The shop is quite cozy, with maybe 6 private room/booth areas (fits about groups of 4 people), and 5 tables in the open area of the restaurant. It's decorated really cute actually! You can tell that a lot of attention was paid to the little details, from little string lights in lanterns placed around the shop, decoration sake bottles in every room, to the dishes used for the food. We came on a Sunday afternoon. While we were there, there were 2 chefs and one waitress. The restaurant wasn't very busy (probably due to it being new), so we didn't need to make any reservations for a group of 8. We were given two tables pushed together in the center of the restaurant. They have a wide variety of lunch specials available here, and they are pretty affordable, starting at $9.99 for a sushi and maki set (8 pcs sushi, 6 pcs california roll). Their lunch sets also come with miso soup, salad, and ice cream. We even got a complimentary mini soba. The quality of the sushi was good but not amazing, but the plating is what made this place stand out. Usually lunch sets come in standard bento boxes, but they plate the sushi similarly to how a higher end sushi restaurant downtown might. For some reason, the map shows this place at Finch and Bayview, but it's actually at Bayview and Cummer, in the valu-mart Plaza. I came here with my brother and my family and was pleasantly surprised. We ordered the dinner sushi sets while husband ordered the gamjatang and it was awesome. We each got a delicious soba starter, which my little devoured, broth and all. And then the food came. Seriously, the gamjatang is such a good deal for 4 giant bones of pork ($9). The broth is nice, but not as spicy as I'd like. The 3 banchan dishes complemented the soup perfectly. Our sushi sets were fantastic. At first I was skeptical since the prices were a bit higher than I was used to for a similar combo, but once it came I could definitely see why. Not only was the presentation amazing, but it also came with an amaebi! I never see those on a sushi combo meal! So I was already excited the second my plate hit the table. The rice to fish ratio was perfect, the seafood fresh, and it was filling! The service here was also great! They had little cups and cutlery for my kiddo, and were quick with the water and tea refills. Kid friendly for sure (no boosters, only high chairs), and the booth rooms look like the perfect cozy place to hide away. Ambiance is romantic and casual and service is quick and super friendly. They have little booths which can create an intimate setting and you don't feel watched or distracted by a busy restaurant. Food was high quality and nothing we ordered was a disappointment. You can always tell when a place goes cheap on ingredient quality ot llr quantity but this wasn't the case here. They had stopped serving bubble tea because of how busy they were, which was a shame because who doesn't love a refreshing bubble tea with Japanese cuisine, but they're definitely great at what they do.
