Not normally being a huge fan of Japanese cuisine, it took me a while to get around to visiting this place. Now that I have though, it's become a regular stop. I've only ever been here for lunch, and I've only eaten 5 or 6 different dishes because I'm always eating off the lunch special menu. This isn't a bad thing though. Every meal I've had has been great, and I feel no need to venture outside of that zone for now! The first thing I note about their lunches is they're just plain inexpensive. Most are about $10 and come with two small soups (one miso and another one that they don't mention on the menu but comes with most of the meals and is spectacular), a small salad, noodles, a bit of fruit, rice, and a main. Along with chicken and beef dishes, they also have a noodle soup (which is delicious) as well as a sushi dish on the menu (which I'll never try, but I've heard is great), so there's something for everyone. Service is almost always polite and fast, and although the place is a bit older in appearance, it's well take care of and inviting. I'm definitely looking forward to many more meals here! read more

This cozy sushi restaurant has all the typical sushi restaurant staples (sushi rolls, nigiri sushi, sashimi, donburis (rice bowls), udon noodles, and a few Korean dishes such as bibimbap (the owners are Korean). There was no parking right outside of the restaurant (main road), but you could park on the side residential streets or in a large plaza nearby (about 10 minutes walk). The first thing we noticed when we walked in was the plethora of kids' drawings plastered all over the front door, walls, and the interior of the restaurant. Every table had a set of crayons and paper that you could use to draw. It seemed very family and kids-friendly. The interior was small, cozy, and had a very homey vibe. We were seated in a booth which added to the coziness feeling. Food came out relatively quickly, and everything was decent. Unagi Don came with a good amount of unagi and avocado slices, on top of a heap of rice. Kaizen Don was excellent - it came with thick slices of sashimi (salmon, tuna, shrimps, and imitation crab). Every donburi (rice bowl) came with house green salad and miso soup. We chose to add on a few extra green salads. Sushi rolls that we ordered as a group all came on one long wooden board - perfect for sharing. I wish the asparagus in the asparagus roll wasn't battered and deep-fried (tempura style). My favourite sushi roll was the El Dorado Roll (without rice - salmon, tuna, cooked shrimp, imitation crab, cucumber, and avocado wrapped in cucumber which added extra crunch). It's still a very pricey sushi restaurant that you'd get less wait time if you make a reservation in advance. Food is still good but the service has declined the last two visits. It wasn't very busy for eat in but they took a long long time the last two times, and they forget things. Like they forgot one of two salads that's included, almost forgot the miso soup, didn't give us napkins and utensils to eat our dinner until we asked. And even with three servers and like maybe 7-8 tables, it still took so long to get their attention. Small little shop where there are mix of booths and small 2 people tables in the middle. Came here on a Saturday evening at around 6 and place was pretty empty. Tried salmon trio combo and sushi deluxe b. Both were decent. Nothing crazy special. Rice was a small ball for the nigiri. Ordered a takeout tray by phone on a weekday. The order was ready to be picked up within 20 minutes. Staff were friendly and preparation was quick! The takeout tray itself was a bit underwhelming though. The maki pieces were different sizes (there were 10 pieces dynamite roll, but they were pretty thin pieces compared to the dragon roll). The good thing was that the rice layer was thin, meaning there was lots of filling. But the flavours were quite mild, even for the dragon roll, I found I needed to rely on the soy sauce, wasabi and ginger for flavour. And to give you a sense of my palate, I rarely cook with salt at home. My fav of the tray was probably the spicy salmon - it was packed with salmon and the spicy sauce gave it that added flavour. Another thing was the tray had 36(?) pieces of sushi, but not enough wasabi to go with it. We ran out of wasabi half way through. Their weekday lunch specials looked pretty good - maybe next time I'll give the bento boxes a try! read more

Definitely one of the better sushi restaurants in the area! I usually order a sushi-sashimi-roll platter and add on a special roll. Their sushi is very fresh and the nigiri has the perfect balance of rice to fish, with the fish not cut too thin! Would recommend to anyone looking for sushi in this area! Was in the Leaside area, starving, craving sushi and turned to Yelp to provide recommendations. Came across Kintako which had 4.5 stars thought I'd give it a try. I the Ordered tako wasabi, a spicy tuna roll and karage for take out. At first look, the tuna was really red and almost looked like spam. I knew this was not going to be good and I was right. I couldn't finish it. Next thing I tried was the tako wasabi - first bite and I almost puked. The squid tasted rancid. Didn't finish it and tossed it. Chicken karage was about the only edible thing but it was bland, had no seasoning, was not crispy at all. This was not sushi in my opinion but sushit. Don't know how this place has 4.5 stars... Service and food is amazing! Servers are super friendly, easy to talk to, and gave recommendations to our orders. We ordered the Laird platter with the volcano roll. We first got noodles for appetizer, then came salad and a big bowl of Edamame for the table to share. (Most places Edamame is a side order) When our sushi boat came we also got miso soup...It was like a four course meal, we were surprised how the appetizers kept coming. Different servers would come around refilling our tea and water once our cups are about a third full. We thought the Laird platter came with dessert like some other platter options on the menu, but this one didn't. However the waiter still offered us ice cream for free, options of green tea, vanilla, and black sesame. They also added extra touches to the ice cream scoop, chocolate drizzle and (granola?) flakes - extra brownie points! Several years ago i visited Kintako and the food and service was so good that it held the honor of being my very first yelp review. Yesterday I revisted this restaurant but this time with my wife and kids and I'm happy to say the food and service was still terrific as ever. They nicely provided crayons and a coloring sheet to entertain the kids. We ordered the Kintako Platter for 4 and the presentation of the Salmon on Fire roll, the Volcano roll and the sashimi was spectacular. The quality of the fish was also very good. We were also pleasantly surprised by the "extras" that we got. They served us steamed edamame to start and a noodle broth soup as almost like an "amuse bouche". Then there was the traditional salad and miso soup. All-in-all, the quantity of food was really great and even though this isn't an AYCE, i would much rather go here for the quality and variety of sushi. With regards to the service, the waitress was extremely attentive to our needs given that we had four kids in our group. Great job Kintako! Came here again recently for takeout (during covid times); great customer service as usual; some of the owner's children were playing on the floor in a makeshift play area since the resto is closed for dine-in, so it was nice to see the family affair. My boyfriend has been here 3 years ago and since then, the menu and the price have changed. They don't have a Lunch special anymore but the quality in their Sashimi is really good! We ordered the Chirashi don (on the menu called Kaizen Don) and it did not disappoint. On their dessert menu, they also have homemade Sake Ice cream (made in-house) but they were sold out for the day. I would come back again just to try their Sake Ice Cream and their other speciality rolls. Like all the other reviews have said, their service is excellent. The servers are constantly refilling our tea and water every few minutes. They have limited seating and all their tables are meant for 4+ people. The owner was super nice and threw in some complimentary sobs noodles. The sushi was not too fresh as I realized it was sitting outside for a while. The sashimi pieces were too thick in my opinion- I would have enjoyed it more if it was cut a bit more thin. It felt like eating a piece of fish verses a piece of sashimi. The maki rolls were superb! A lot of things are in the details. We came to pick up some takeout, specifically one of the party platters. They were very hospitable and let us sit in one of the booths as we debated on which platter. Also, as we were waiting for our food, they gave us a complimentary little bowl of soup to warm our bellies. It was a very nice touch that set the mood for the whole interaction. The seaweed used for the Roll was chewy and moist. The cut on the rolls were not clean and precise at all. It looked like an elementary school arts and crafts project where kids just first learnt to use their scissors. The sushi rice was not well seasoned and was overly moist. Me and my friend decided to come here for dinner because of the high Yelp rating and reviews. However, it ended up a very disappointing experience for us. I think this restaurant is overrated. Food is average and we were rushed to pay our bill before we finished our food. (The restaurant was closing at 10, but the waiter need us to pay at 9:30 already.) We were not allowed to dessert because they were closing soon and they needed to clean up their kitchen before closing. At least they should let us know when will be their last order so that we can order the dessert in advance. Appetizers: - Tako wasa: too salty, no wasabi taste at all - deep fried soft shell crab: over- breaded, I can only tasted the bread crumbles instead of soft shell crab Main: - Sushi and sashimi dinner for 2: the freshness of the sashimi was average. The sushi rice was too soft - volcano roll: blow torched butterfish sushi roll with avocado and cucumber. That was the only dish I like. I like the way they blow torched the butterfish on the top of the sushi roll. I also like the way they present the sushi roll, the sushi roll was on fire when they served on your table. Dessert: We didn't have a ​chance to change to try it. Suppose we wanna ordered the tempura ice-cream. However, we had been told that we couldn't order the dessert anymore since they already closed the kitchen at 9:30. Service is beyond five stars -- I forgot to tell them about a food allergy (unagi) until the end of the meal, when I asked them to pack all the leftovers except the unagi sushi. The waitress apologized (for my mistake) and when we got home we realized they had given us a couple of freshly-made salmon sushi in place of the unagi we left behind. Totally without our asking. When we went back for our second visit 3 weeks later, they remembered us and made a point of not giving us any eel in the first place (again, without our asking). Let me also address an unwarranted criticism in another review.... lots of 5-star ratings from 3- and 4-time Yelpers. Perhaps these are not rookies as implied but they don't bother posting a review unless they feel very strongly about a place? If you sit in the resto and listen to people arriving, you'll realize that a large part of their customer base are repeat customers as they are greeted with a warm, friendly, knowing smile from the staff. Look at all the chopsticks set aside at the door for the regulars. Enough said. On to the food....volcano roll is a hit both visually and tastely. (I know, that's not a word.) Salad is leaps and bounds above ANY other salad I've had at any other Japanese resto, and that includes high-end places. Dressing's unique gingery taste combined with the crunchy fresh greens is so much better than what you get at most other places. Complimentary soup/noodles is a nice touch. The sashimi is fresh -- not sure why others are critical. Big thick slices give you value for money, unlike other cheaper places that look like they shaved the fish using Kramer's deli meat slicer ("so thin you can't even see them"). Rolls (like volcano) are tasty and unique. Tempura was light and perfectly cooked. One thing missing from apps is beef ribs (only available as a full dinner). Presentation is top notch with nice touches in mixed set dinners as well as sushi/roll platters. Really not a lot to complain about. We'll be back for sure. read more

This review is based on my lunch experience at Kintako. Sushi Set ($9.95) with 6 pieces of nigiri sushi and half of them was salmon! The shari rice was packed a little too loose and most of them just fell apart when I was trying to eat them. Service was attentive and pleasant. I also like the idea that they making a lot of their sauces in house without MSG. Nice patio at the back if you like to eat sushi outdoor. Kintako is a good neighbourhood Japanese restaurant, but not worth a special trip just to come here to eat. read more

First off, the service here is spectacular. The lady was so incredibly nice. We came at the beginning of a weekday lunch rush, around 12pm. We managed to find a parking spot on the street next to the restaurant, but I'm not sure that there is a formal parking lot. They started us off with a cup of noodle soup and salad. The salad dressing was a bit heavy on the ginger. We then ordered a spicy salmon roll to share, and two teishokus (meal set with rice, miso soup, seaweed salad, and fruit) - one with sashimi and one with chicken cutlets. The quality of the food was great, and it was a good portion for two people. I would definitely come back to Kintako. read more

Saturday night, came here close to 8ish. First impression, not so much "fine-dining." Customers seemed like they were residents of the area. No parking spaces but easy to find a spot on the street. A friend and I ordered the same spicy maki combo, and my other friend had the sashimi teishoku. Everything came with salad, miso soup, and a small cup of soup noodles. I thought the noodles were a bit overcooked and too soft. Maybe just my personal preference. The salad and miso soup were pretty good. The miso soup actually had mushroom slices. Yum! Spicy maki combo: like I said, my friend and I ordered the same thing, but the presentation was inconsistent. His did not have the spicy mayo on top of his rolls, nor did he have a drizzle of sauce... We didn't bother to question the waitress though. I came without an appetite but I finished my order quickly. I guess I really do love sushi that much! Sashimi teishoku: my friend's set had 3 small sides, and it was interesting to see they gave her a piece of maki roll. She also had blueberries served at the same time as dessert?? The bowl of rice seemed too small... (For me, at least.) The food was decent and service was good, although they asked too many times if we wanted our cups refilled. This place is a family run restaurant with a authentic Japanese feel. I've been here twice before, once for dinner and again for lunch. I'll just start with my first experience. We had a large group of people, which looked like it may be a problem given the size of the restaurants. However, they were very accommodating and pushed a bunch of tables together. I ordered the short beef ribs that comes with a small vegetable dishes. The beef ribs were delicious.Meat was tendered and came off the bone. Sauce that accompanied had a nice sweet tangy taste. I tried their home made sake ice cream, which was interesting in a good way. It was like vanilla ice cream with a hint of sake flavouring. Second time we came, staff again was very friendly. I tried the chicken teriyaki this time. Chicken was cooked well, but it wasn't as hot as I'd like it to be. I have a feeling they cooked it early but served it a little late so it cooled down more to my liking. Regardless, the presentation was good and the time it took for all the food to be delivered was good. For dessert, we tried a black sesame and tempura ice cream. Both were good, but I would favoured the taste of black sesame more. One thing to note is that it is a bit far away from public transportation and I had some difficulty finding parking around the area. This is one of the more pleasant locations to visit in Toronto and wouldn't mind coming back here again. read more
