I have been banking with MAFCU since 2007 and have had nothing but good experiences. While on vacation in 2012 I wanted to purchase a timeshare. I called MAFCU to see how their rates compared to the rates properties finance company. I was approved for my loan over the phone (pending supporting documentation). But I decided to use it for debt consolidation instead. In 2013 I was at a convention when it was discovered that a check I'd written, for over $1,200.00 had been doctored and cash by an unintended recipient. MAFCU credited the money back to my account and was very helpful with the filing of my police report. They provided all the documentation I needed of the person that cashed my check. All of this was able to be done over the phone & via email since I was out of the area. Last month I was in the market for a new car. I saw all the advertisements about the low interest rates so I picked up the phone and called Bobbie. She was able to take my information over the phone and get me approved. Even though she no longer works in the Silver Spring branch she was willing to come in for me to sign the paperwork. When we were unable to connect she made sure that Veronika was there to assist me. They are both very polite, professional, friendly & helpful. I have recommended MAFCU to several friends & family members. read more

I am sorry I put so much money into this bank because after five months, they're charging me five dollars to send me a statement and they refuse to respond to anything and I have no way of contacting them. They never allowed me to set up an app so I could see it on my phone. They never told me they would charge me a five dollar fee to send me a statement and they didn't send me a statement until I already had my money in the bank for five months. They continue to be very problematic and I would highly recommend you do not use this bank. read more

Really nice and friendly staff, especially Sandy! She always asks how you would like your bills and takes care of everyone really quick and professionally. Noone likes waiting in long lines and she understands that. She also works at the bethesda branch that is closing at the end of the month! Very easy to find location! P.S MAFCU atm machines take denominations other then 20's! Most atm machines only spit out 20's! read more

I'm a shared credit union member, and I've used this branch multiple times to help me do my banking. So as you can imagine, I was surprised when going in last week to deposit some checks and the teller REQUIRED that I give her my phone number. Note that I have never had to do this before, and that I presented all requested ID. Nevertheless, she told me she wouldn't process my checks unless I gave her my phone number. Inquisitive, I asked what would be done with it. "We just keep it on record", I was told. Would it be provided to any third parties? "I don't know". So you mandate individual's personal contact information (information which you don't need to do their banking, and which isn't required by the Co-Op network), but you can't tell us any specifics of why it's required or what is being done with it...especially if it is being shared with (i.e. sold) to third parties. I had a car loan with them under the old managment of the federal credit union. Under the new Educational Federal Credit Union, they create busy work for themselves and annoy the heck out of the customers. With my new loan, I filled out the form. Usually it comes with information for a direct payment out of payroll and you complete a special formed- all you have to do is sign. Not with them, they sent a blank form wanting the customer to do it all. Then I received a letter about not stating I had car insurance. Well they never asked, so they decided to add money on my loan. Had to give them a copy of my insurance. It's the small things that need to be clarified and become EXTREMELY annoying. If the loan is complete properly all these other things are not needed. Never had any problems with old management very thourgh, which is why I didn't hesitate to do it again. For my next car loan, I will be finding another location especially when I have an A+ credit score. I don't have time to play silly games with my debts. read more

If you love old-fashioned banking, you will love this bank. They seem to have frozen in time about 1983 or so. MAFCU makes it hard for a self-employed small business owner to make deposits. I get lots of checks for small amounts - I often have 12 or 15 checks to deposit at one time. In order to deposit these in the ATM, I have to go through the entire process of entering my card and logging in for every single check, while everyone else who wants to use the ATM lines up and waits, and waits and waits. That's right, the ATM will not take multiple checks and it will not take a deposit in an envelope containing multiple checks. I have to go to the bank during their business hours (also when I am working) and go into the lobby to deposit multiple checks. I tried to set up depositing through the mobile app, but I have to have direct bill pay or direct deposit to do this. I prefer to control my own bills, thank you, and I am self-employed, so forget electronic deposits. Because of these roadblocks to making my deposits I often have to hold on to customer checks for days before I can get to the bank during lobby hours. When I called them they told me I could go farther away to another bank to use another bank's lobby, or I could put the checks in an envelope and mail them. I really want this credit union to work out, but I need a bank that is willing to enter the 21st century. read more

Marginal customer service!!! This day and time when social security numbers are being used to steal identity, they're writing your number on your slip regardless of you consent to or not. HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE, HORRIBLE BANK. Take your business elsewhere. I banked there for a little over a week, which was all the time needed to be charged $31 in a COMPLETELY unwarranted fee. I move often, love credit unions, have excellent credit, and have banked with 3 different CUs in 3 different states and have NEVER had a bad or even remotely unpleasant experience until Mid-Atlantic. When I called to resolve the issue they were unresponsive and uncooperative. I was kind in tone and manner when trying to resolve the issue with their representative. They offered no help and made no attempt to compromise or find a resolution. I finally said, "Let me get this straight, you're saying you cannot and will not do anything to help make this right? Even though I didn't to anything wrong?" Their answer, "Yes." I'm closing my account and taking my banking needs elsewhere. read more

Nice credit union. Used them primarily because MAFCU is part of shared branches, I can use my other credit union to transact at this branch. Opened an account at Mid Atlantic because I could see that it is well run. People would do well to realize that there are credit unions and evvvverything else. A credit union won't hit you with hidden fees. I had a bank account that would charge me to move savings to checking. Needless to say, that happened exactly once. Credit unions are insured federally. Credit unions are owned by members and so you can expect the best--to include innovation. Increasingly, features like taking a photo of a check to send, will suffice for taking in a check for deposit. Wish that MAFCU were a little more Outreach. Took a young relative in to open an account. Since she had two small spots, but no other credit, MAFCU would not open an account. She'll turn it around, but the credit union should have a starter account for young people who might have run afoul of a mobile phone bill. Even after getting it straight, it follows you for seven years. At least let someone deposit to build credit. More outreach could happen for subsidized county buildings. People use cab fare or ride the bus TO GET CASH for cabs and busses! MAFCU could have ATM located in these buildings, or, have once a week visiting teller to transact the old fashioned way----by hand, across a desk. These folks get monthly checks, MAFCU should find a way to serve these hundreds of people throughout the county. Bringing the credit union to people who live in assisted living and subsidized apartments should be as or more important than the credit union being in office buildings. Go to where the members are. read more

They prey on folks with low income and do not maintain any sort of customer service standards. They do not try to retain customers, rather they will treat you like dirt and be happy when you leave them. Their workers are lazy and can't keep up with the expectations of a standard bank. read more

This place is a joke. Customer service is non-existent. They can't even send you a new debit card without making you wait a month and spend 8 hours on hold with call center tellers. They have no locations, they are understaffed and their online app is complete garbage. I hate to take my money back to a large central bank but it's hard to justify supporting a local establishment when they can't execute basic functions. read more

I visited the Silver Spring Branch yesterday and the branch did not open until 9:30am. It was snowing/freezing cold and customers were gathered in front of the door.The staff could have allowed everyone to come in out of the snow until they were ready to begin transactions. However, the staff seemed oblivious to us standing outside and there were a few elderly women in the crowd. It did not look good for MAFCU. I generally have very good experiences when I visit MAFCU but I believe that the staff could have made it a little easier for everyone. read more

Four years ago I applied for a loan twice at MAFCU (New Hampshire Ave. location) and was turned down both instances. I had just gotten out of the hospital and then one of my children had some medical issues, and on top of that I had just gotten separated and was running very low on money and so I turned to MAFCU for assistance and did not receive any help. As a result, I was constantly having to pay the overdraft fees because I did not have enough money in my account to pay me and my child's bills. I was fortunately able to find another more humane credit union to deal with and since then have been able to get back on my feet again. I feel very hurt by the treatment at MAFCU I received because of the impending homelessness I faced. I strongly go against recommending this bank to anyone. read more
