The lack of communication is RIDICULOUS. To drive 20+ minutes here only to arrive and find out my girls swim lessons have been canceled. Not once, not twice, COUNTLESS TIMES. THIS LAST TIME THEY CANCELED EVERY SESSION AND DID NOT INFORM ME!!!!! I rush through rain, sleet, LITERALLY SNOW, only to be told that swim lessons are canceled! They tell me to download the app, I download the app. I update my communication preferences, and they still do not communicate! How hard is it to send out a mass text saying "today swim lessons are canceled!!" But whenever my bill is due, they da*n near stop me from walking in and be ready to call Maplewood police!!!!! read more

Garbage. I was excited to go back to the Y for the pool for my kids. I also enjoy sauna and steam room. I had my phone stolen from this YMCA. The front desk people did not care, and it seemed like this sort of thing happens all the time. I wanted to confront the people that I thought did it, but the police arrived. The staff at this Y did not immediately cooperate and nothing was done. They did not take my information down; I had to cancel my membership to create a record of the situation. The customer service was garbage. And I am 100% certain that a patron of this establishment fit into the garbage category. While waiting for the police to arrive, I noticed that the front desk staff just allowed randoms off the street to enjoy the facilities for day passes. Maybe its time to scrutinize visitors more often instead of allowing random people to fleece paying members. Horrible job on all parts of this interaction. Horrible customer service. Horrible follow through. Horrible experience. I hope that each and every staff member experiences this situation to maybe empathize with not just the theft of personal property, but the apathy that the YMCA brought to the table today. Two members of the Y staff could improve by greeting people with 'Hello" and/or "How can we help you?" This is Customer Service 101. I was dropping off my daughter for her first morning of Y summer camp and horrifically pulled up early to the wrong site, as she should've been taken inside by me to before-care. A counselor, an adult, literally had a scowl on her face and glared at me as I approached. Another counselor, also an adult, told me up front that drop off doesn't start until 8:55. I said that my wife asked me to drop our daughter off on short notice and I didn't know. He further scolded me and fed his ego by saying there were handouts provided. I didn't see the point of them talking down to me in front of at least a dozen teen counselors over what should've been a non-issue. read more

I have been a member of the Y since the beginning of the year. It's been a lifestyle change for me and I try my best to go at least 5 times a week. I forget to check in through Yelp every time I am there though. I'll try and get better. Signing up was easy to do online for my husband and me to be on the same plan. We did all the paperwork online and then we visited the front desk worker one day to receive our access cards and get our photos taken. The front desk staff has been helpful from day 1. After a few weeks of being a member I was tired of lugging my belongings to and from every single day, so I decided to rent a locker to hold my stuff. I went in on a Sunday to fill out the locker rental form which was super easy. I selected a locker and told the front desk staff member which number it was. Easy as that. Now that I have the locker I don't have to carry such heavy bags every time I visit. Instead, I bring in my bathroom items (shower stuff, blow-dryer, makeup) every Monday morning and take them home on Friday. I have a good system. The worst part is that since I leave all my stuff there I pretty much have to go or else I can't get ready for work at home. I need that make-up and blow-dryer! It's a good motivation for me to get my butt there everyday. In the mornings I arrive around 7 am and scan in. I drop off my work clothes in my locker and then go to the cardio room for my workout. I am always able to find a machine to use as I switch off between the treadmill and the elliptical. The staff in the cardio room are friendly and whenever I pass a staff member in the hall they greet me as well. It's nice to have so many people happy to see me each day! After my workout I go to the locker room and begin getting ready for work. The showers are functional. This is an older Y so they are a bit run down, but I know they get sprayed down and cleaned often. The floors look kind of dirty so be sure you wear shower shoes! Getting ready is easy since there is a lot of counter space in the locker room. I use my blow-dryer, but they also have dryers available to members. There are usually about 3-4 of us every morning sharing the counter space to get our hair and make up ready, but we have a good system and it works. I haven't made it to any of the fitness classes yet, but I will hopefully this summer. Yoga and Zumba are calling my name! Tips: The showers do have liquid soap if needed (I bring my own though) They do provide towels (I bring my own) They haven't run out of hot water (I hope they never do) They have lots of hair dryers in the locker rooms ( I bring my own) They have a steam room (bring a towel or two to sit/lie on) They have lots of water fountains (I bring a water bottle with ice and then fill it with water as needed) There is a phone app that you can use for your card to scan in and to see the schedule of classes. It's not the cleanest gym, but as Steven C. says, "it gets the job done". Could this Y use an update? Yes! Should this Y have a good cleaning from top to bottom? Yes. Will this stop me from visiting? No. Overall, I like the Y and I like the people who work there. I also really like the locker room friends I have made! read more

Having my kids go to camp here has been the WORST summer experience. The only redeeming quality are the camp counselors. Everyone in the office and running the show are money hungry and don't actually care about our kids. They're impossible to work with and if your kid is bullied, picked on, or hurt, they don't bother to let you know. And you can't get in touch with ANYONE. So you leave voicemails and then end up leaving 1 star reviews everywhere to try and get someone's attention. Don't go. read more

This gym gets the job done. Upsides: Childcare is included in the membership! The pool is well designed for lap swimmers! The showers are HOT and they have soap at each station. They appear to provide towels (Not sure exactly about this) The Spa is plenty hot They appear to have most of the machines you'd want for lifting weights Staff is friendly Downsides: The lockers are rusted out (All of them) The tops of the lockers are coated in dust (All of them) The steam room isn't very hot, nor was it clean (18+ only) The spa doesn't allow anyone under 18 in it (see freezing children cold from the pool) The showers are in the hallway that everyone has to travel to reach the pool The floors are visibly dirty (even in the mandatory feet only area's) This is an older facility. It feels old in its design and function. Millennial types will likely abhor its lack of privacy in the locker rooms. But when it comes down to it, everything you need is here and with a little effort on your part it can be great (see clean). read more

The Y now offers yoga for free if you're a member!! Love love love this location. There are great free group fitness classes to choose from. My favorite part is the free child care & their amazing staff. The only reasons I won't give 5 stars? My husband left his shoes in a locker, an employee told us they were put in lost & found, then they magically disappeared. The lost & found is located in a staff only area.... Which means someone who works there has a new pair of size 11 J's. (I told my hubs it's his fault for forgetting them but alas...) Also, it's always too hot! read more

I went to join the ymca mid county thinking I would be able to use the gym I joined on feb 27th and went to two work out classes could not get in the pool area or the spa so I decided to cancel on the 5th so the boy said ok I was canceled and I called back up there on the 12th to make sure I was canceled and the lady said ok your canceled and you won't be charged so looking at my statement they charged me I'm pissed so I call and they said a whole different story train your people read more

It's been over a year since I wrote my original review of this Y. However, the 5 stars still stands. I'm officially a gym rat. All of the workers know me by name, and I kinda like it. Everyone who works there is SOOOO friendly. I take group spinning classes here a few times a week, and let me just tell you -- it's a GREAT cardio workout! If you don't leave class with sweat pouring out of you, YOU'RE DOIN IT WRONG! Oh, and they added a stair stepper machine to the gym. Awesome! read more

Katie's super sculpt class intense, but the perfect swimsuit season workout. Healthy living, social responsibility? Single mom under tremendous pressure applied for discounted fee to exercise in attempt to manage stress... so that I can be a better mother. I was approved after a somewhat humiliating process but was then charged full fees that I had never actually authorized. Now, they won't return my funds. This has only added to stress because that "small" amount of money is a lot for me and my kiddo right now. I disagree about the healthy living, building community, social responsibility part. They're nonprofit, tax exempt, seek private donations, high membership fees, and United Way funds, so that all types of people can exercise and be healthy. Misleading to say the least. read more

My regular workout spot, when I am in town usually go 3 or 4 times a week. Not the best Y in the city but pretty good gym and lots of equipment in the treadmill room. Pool is so-so, and although the basketball floor was refinished they did not fix the loose boards so there are a lot of dead spots when you dribble. My son has done quite a few things at this Y. The people are very friendly here and after a while they recognize you. He is currently enrolled in the Kidventure summer camp and loves it. They have different activities for them daily depending on the theme of the week and they go on field trips on Fridays to different pools, the science center, city museum, etc. He has also taken swimming at this location and the swim instructors are great. My son likes to act like he doesn't know what he's doing when he actually does and the instructors won't baby him and push him to do it. They make it fun to learn. They use different toys and have them jump off the diving board along with the lesson to keep them intersted. As they progress through the different levels, they do have the parents sit outside the windows to watch so the kids dont get distracted or you can go exercise. He has also done the karate here which I am not a fan of, the price is nice but it didn't seem like he learned enough. To me, it seemed like the instructor was more interested in showing off his skills, while we watched and his assistant was training the class then actually training them himself. But he was very friendly with all the kids. read more

Mid-County Y offers a variety of programs for its very diverse clientele. People from many zipcodes use this facility and keep returning. Terrific, encouraging staff offer classes that always get a crowd and encourage people to try new fitness classes when they are offered. The Y is always busy; newcomers are welcome; friendships develop. This staff listens to feedback and is constantly working to improve spaces, schedules, and events to keep members returning, staying fit and feeling happy as they do. read more

I'm a huge fan of the YMCA. Not all gyms offer what the Y is able to. As a member you can take free group fitness classes, swim, and shoot some hoops. Sure this gym may seem a little expensive compared to some of those other facilities that are just packed with machines and meat heads. But, do they have a swimming pool or a basketball court? Also, the YMCA is a not-for-profit and if you have certain limitations in your budget, their Strong Community campaign takes donations from employees and other members to offset some of the cost. Now that was just a broad overview of YMCA's everywhere. Let's get specific and discuss the Brentwood location, known as Mid-County. Out of all of the YMCA's in Saint Louis, it's possibly the smallest in members and size. It fits its community perfectly, with it's proximity to Memorial Park and the Brentwood school system less than a mile away. It's a little hidden away, but easily accessible with very little trouble to find a good spot. The weight room has tendencies to get a little busy, but not to the point where you'll be waiting for machines. The interior just got a fresh coat of paint and looks a little less old and out dated as it did before. The gym is a small one with 6 baskets to shoot at, 2 of which can be raised and lowered for kids. Above the gym is a running track that takes 18 laps to equal a mile. Overall it's a serviceable Y with all of the fixings that this organization offers. However, it doesn't even compare to some of the newer YMCA's such as the one in Chesterfield Valley. Luckily, for those of you who need your Y to be top notch, your membership is transferrable and can be used at any Y in the Metro area. read more

My only complaint was outdated cardio and weight equipment, which have both been updated. Excellent staff and place to work out.

This is more towards the child center, I've used this Y for swim lessons. It's decent, a little crowded and the front desk people and swim instructor were very nice. Very different with the child care center. I get it's busy, lots of people call and I know there's a wait list for it. However, I called 3 times and left a message over 2 weeks and never gotta call back. I wouldn't put my child in here now, communication is horrible. read more

The WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER!!! I've been a member off and on there for about 30 years and the service I received today showed me just how much value they put on that relationship. Ive always enjoyed taking out of town guests to the facility, but after today, seriously doubt I would ever recommend that place to anyone else! Ive noticed the double standards practiced with members of African American descent over the years and today was a victim of such practices myself. For that reason, an enthusiastic supporter of this branch I will no longer be (even tho its minutes from my home). I hope these practices find their way to the forefront of every conscious member's attention, so that the motto of the YMCA could be enjoyed by all without limitation. From the branch manager who shuffled me off to someone (who asked me to explain the situation for the 5th time) to the young lady who was so short and rude I couldnt even make out her (inaudible) name, thank you for the bittersweet end to a lifelong relationship! I have been a member for over a year now, and still enjoy the helpful staff, and programs. The staff for the equipment rooms is great, and are all very friendly and knowledgeable. The programs for kids are great, and the teachers are good for the cost. The equipment is in good repair, and kept clean, and the space is not cramped with too much equipment, but with what you want to use. read more

Our family recently ended our 18+ year membership here. It was a bittersweet parting, location was great but we couldn't justify the monthly cost after seeking comparisons nearby. Personally, this place seems overstaffed & could easily downsize the positions in order to charge the members less. I realize that the Y offers a lot of scholarships to well-deserving families w/ our memberships, but maybe more could be offered if fewer Administrative positions were filled. Facility is old & needs updating. Location is wonderful, but wonder how long it can sustain the costs of fix up vs. relocation or complete overhaul. Lots of theft in locker rooms... bring a lock or expect to lose stuff. This facility had issues w/ traveling thieves- people that sneak by the front desk as members & gain access to locker rooms/facilities. When it gets crowded & there's a rush of people, campers, etc., it's easy for others to get past front desk. read more
