My surgery yesterday in the mid-town office involved surgical extraction with bone replacement graft. They gave me a choice between sedation and local. It was nice to be given that choice on the spot, and I even changed my mind over the course of a few minutes, and they responded well to my change of mind. All of the staff there is professional and kind. I had Dr. Calat. I enjoyed his manner, and he made me laugh, which really helped me stay calm. He explained everything to me, and, as they promised, I emerged from that office smiling (crookedly of course due to being numb lol). It's now the next day as I'm writing this, and I've had no complications, no bleeding, and haven't even needed the ibuprofen. EDIT: I got curious about that one very negative review here on Yelp of this oral surgery practice, so I did a little sleuthing and discovered that the reviewer has ten reviews right in a row from 2019 to 2024 of various establishments, ALL with one star, and all with pretty nasty comments. read more

My surgery went very well. I had a complicated case where my wisdom tooth impacted the molar in the front, causing both to be removed. I was very concerned and afraid of any neural damage, but Dr. Calat proposed an alternative plan that was less risky, and the surgery went smoothly. I also did an implant with him. Throughout the process, Dr. Calat was very patient and spent time coordinating my case with my dentist. I am very grateful for his work and highly recommend his services. I went on 3 consultations before I found Dr. Calat, and I'm so grateful that I did. He was warm, honest, transparent, knowledgeable and he didn't try to upsell me on a bunch of unnecessary procedures. When I said I wanted to use a local anesthetic, he immediately said 'great' and respected that decision without trying to push me in a different direction. The first oral surgeon I met (before Dr. Calat) tried to classify one of my (straight, fully erupted) wisdom teeth as a complex extraction and added a 'not covered' anti-swelling injection to the quoted price without specifying that it was optional. The second one tried to scare me into adding 'not covered' sedation and bone grafting procedures to my extractions (talking about how he would need to drill into the bone to get the bottom wisdom tooth out and how I may not heal optimally without a bone graft). I would have paid around $600+ more with the first surgeon and up to $2000+ more with the second. And this is WITH dental insurance! Both of them lost my trust the minute they tried to take advantage financially, and I couldn't run fast enough from the doctor who tried to scare me with the drill. If I can't trust you to deal fairly and without scare tactics, then I'm definitely not trusting you with my surgery! I have no idea how far you'll go to make a buck. But back to Dr. Calat -- he talked me through the entire procedure, made sure I was very numb to minimize the pain, kept checking in with me and comforting me through the parts that were more difficult, and got both my wisdom teeth out in one piece. I am also very grateful to his office assistant Lismary who was highly responsive, organized and helpful (and frankly a great promoter for Dr. Calat's practice before I was fully decided on booking a consultation with him). She talked about what a wonderful doctor he is and how much his patients value him, and she was completely right! I have waited several months to write this review; in all honesty, I had trouble finding the right words to describe my experience with Dr. Calat. Last year my orthodontist told me that I would need to have my wisdom teeth removed and a TAD (temporary anchorage device) installed to continue my orthodontic treatment. She provided me with a couple of references, but I ultimately decided against them after finding Dr. Calat. His reviews were fantastic, but one of the reasons I decided to move forward with Dr. Calat was because he personally called me to discuss what to expect at my first appointment (which would also be the appointment in which my wisdom teeth were removed). It was very comforting. When I arrived for my appointment, I was quickly taken back to a room and made comfortable by the wonderful support team. Shortly thereafter, Dr. Calat came into the room, spent about 15-30 minutes chatting with me about life, the procedure, and everything in-between. While having wisdom teeth removed is a routine surgery, a patient can only gain so much comfort from hearing, "We do this all the time." That is when a surgeon's people skills come to play. Everything was matter-of-factly explained to me. I never felt rushed, and I never felt silly for asking a question. Once Dr. Calat finished the surgery, he spent time making sure that I was OK before I finally left the office to recover at home. It was honestly the most wonderful experience I have ever had with a doctor - not the best experience with a surgeon - the best experience with any doctor ever. Don't get me wrong. I love a lot of the doctors I have interacted with, but Dr. Calat is something special. I have an ongoing treatment with Dr. Calat for the TAD that he installed at a later date (which is going wonderfully), so I will amend this review at a later date to go further in-depth, but let me leave you with this: You may be reading through reviews because you want to find the best oral surgeon, or perhaps you are reading reviews because you are really nervous about an upcoming procedure and are looking for some comfort. If you choose Dr. Calat to perform your wisdom teeth removal or any other procedure within his purview, you could not be in better hands. A selfish part of me wishes that Dr. Calat were a general dentist because I will be sad when my treatment is finished for good. This review pertains to the Hoboken location on Hudson Street, but they have the same doctors at both locations. I saw Dr Calat for my oral surgery, which is never an enjoyable experience, but he made it feel not so bad. I liked his skillful work, how he explained everything as he did it, and his friendliness. He personally called me the day before to ask if I had any questions in advance and then called me the day after to see how I was feeling. You can't beat that for personalized service! They have a nice office and the front office staff is great as well as the nurse assistants. Would definitely return if I need more work done, I hope not but you never know! read more

Dr. Bo Wang was the doctor who gave me the treatment for the wisdom teeth extractions, I would like to say Dr. Bo was the BEST doctor that I have ever met - he explained my situation clearly and walked me through the treatment plan thoroughly. The surgery was of zero pain and no swelling afterwards. Highly recommend Dr. Bo. Dr. Calat is absolutely wonderful. I had an extremely challenging case of wisdom tooth extraction, and the first time that we tried it (with one of his associates, Dr. Carunchio) with just local anesthesia we had to stop halfway through and try again the next week since I keep feeling sharp pain, and would reflexively jump (extremely dangerous to everyone involved when we're dealing with sharp instruments in the mouth!). The next week, we couldn't even start then because I couldn't tolerate even the lidocaine injections because there was so much pain. I seem to be immune to the stuff or something (this happens even with "standard" dental procedures). So on to sedation we go! Because of a litany of mostly mild medical issues (but numerous), Dr. Calat didn't feel comfortable doing both sedation and the procedure by himself (safety first, which I truly appreciate!), so he brought in Dr. Montazem to handle the sedation while he did the procedure. This took some time to schedule, but once it happened it was QUICK - Dr. Calat called me at 10PM (now that's service!) and told me that it might be able to happen the next day (today) and it did! As other reviews here have stated - no pain whatsoever afterwards! I took some pain medication right when I got home, but haven't taken any since (and it's been long enough for everything to wear off). There's a bit of a weird feeling that I wouldn't even classify as discomfort, but I'm sure that will go away with time. Thanks Dr. Carunchio, Calat, and Montazem! By far the easiest review I have ever had to write and I am proud to do so. Doctor Calat and his team recently operated on my mouth and removed three wisdom teeth in one day. I had a total of three appointments, the initial exam, the surgery and the follow up. All of which were great and stress free. I can say that most people possibly fear getting oral surgery or even being put to sleep for that matter but Doctor Calat reassures that all will be well. He breaks down the procedures slowly and makes sure that you completely understand the next steps. What could have been maybe 1 hour felt like 5 mins during my procedure. I last saw Dr. Calat approximately 8 years ago, when I needed two failed root canals pulled, two dental implants, and the standard wisdom teeth extraction. I came across his information when I was browsing for reputable oral surgeons after having a bad experience with an evaluation from an oral surgeon in Brooklyn. Over the course of many visits I need extraction, bone grafting, dental implants, etc and Dr. Calat was kind and informative with every visit. He takes the time to walk you through the procedures and makes sure you feel comfortable with your decision to proceed with any treatments. The process was painless and easy - swelling down very quickly and able to return to normal food virtually the next day. He wanted to do a $900 biopsy, which I declined. Soon after, my dermatologist diagnosed it on sight and was surprised an oral surgeon couldn't do the same. Nothing but praise for Dr. Calat and everyone at his office! A few weeks ago I woke up with one of my wisdom teeth huge, red, and swollen. Turns out it was massively infected; the emergency dentist I saw (the awesome Dr. Isaac, who I've also reviewed) recommended I should get the tooth out soon to avoid it getting repeatedly infected. I found Dr. Calat through the recommendation of the dentist of a friend of mine. I had called several oral surgeons by that point; since I don't have dental insurance, I was trying to shop around. The receptionist at Dr. Calat's was very kind and patient, and told me that Dr. Calat is very understanding when it comes to patients not having dental insurance. Since this sounded way more promising than the myriad of semi-apologetic receptionists I had already spoken with at other offices, quoting prices that sounded like the results of a good game of Plinko, I was sold. The office itself is clean, in one of those midtown office buildings where all the suites are funny-shaped to allow for as many rooms as possible. I did have to wait quite awhile for Dr. Calat to show up for my initial consultation, but he was so friendly and knowledgable that I wasn't annoyed at all once we got to talking. He's got a great bedside manner! Today was my actual surgery. His assistant, whose name I didn't catch, was also friendly and answered my many questions as she prepped me for the procedure, which mostly involved covering my gums in numbing gel. Dr. Calat shot me up with a lot of Novocain, and as far as the procedure goes, it only took a few minutes (and I got to pick what Pandora station we'd listen to - I went with Ella Fitzgerald and shuddered at the thought of someone getting their teeth pulled to, like, Nickelback radio...I digress.) He warned me when he was going to push or pull, and when to close my eyes (I think he didn't want to poke me in the eye while he was suturing.) I felt no pain at all, just pressure and that weird moment of the tooth itself sliding out. Amazing!! He sent me off with gauze, a leaflet on post-op care (which his assistant had already gone over with me), and prescriptions for antibiotics and painkillers. I'll go back in a week for a follow-up. Right now I feel fine, just minor discomfort and swelling. Oh, and the final cost was absolutely reasonable and exactly what was quoted to me when I first called. Service okay but pricey, Tried to charge me extra 200 courtesy adjustment on top of the 700 bill!! They say insurance would cover 50%, but apparently it's another trick, because now after 3 months I got letter from the office that I owe 200+ and if I don't pay, they will file me to collection agency!!! What are the odds of have not one, but TWO awesomely positive, five-star worthy oral surgeon experiences in the span of one week?! Apparently, for me, the odds are in my favor! After having a difficult tooth pulled in Cambridge, I intended to spend New Years celebrating in NYC. Unfortunately, my new non-tooth was attempting to disrupt my plans. After a week, the pain was not better, but alarmingly worse, and I feared the awful possibility that I'd be in the 2-5% of patients that develop dry socket. Armed with the internet, my unbelievably friendly dental insurance folks (thank you Delta Dental), and of course, Yelp, I found Dr. Calat--a dentist who had both great reviews and accepted my insurance! I called his office at 10:30am and they were able to squeeze me in for an appointment at 12:30pm that very same day. I waited for not more than five minutes after my arrival to see Dr. Calat, who was reassuring, pleasant, conversational AND went to school at Tufts, which is only a few neighborhoods away from here I love--a good sign for me. After a brief but thorough consultation and an X-ray, Dr. Calat assured me that this was indeed NOT dry socket--just a longer-than-usual recovery time that would require a bit more patience on my part. After all, the tooth was hard to remove, so the area was extra sensitive and could actually take up to 10 days to heal! Going to a new, unknown dentist can be a harrowing, scary and painful experience. But rest assured that Dr. Calat will treat you as if he's known you for years, while still maintaining his professional decorum. read more

Had two tooth removed and the surgery was good and very professional. Only issue is the rip-off rates that this guy charges. He's out of network for most insurance so beware - not only do they charge a fortune but your insurance really won't pay much of it at all. Dr. Calat is FABULOUSSSS! Definitely recommended if you harbor a deep fear and resentment of the dentist. (...I happen to not be one of those people. My perspective on it is: "If I'm unconscious and medicated, drill in my mouth all you want." Going into the office not needing the additional comfort, though, you can more clearly see all the effort that Dr. Calat goes through to make sure you're comfortable and at ease.) I had 2 wisdom teeth removed. I was eating food (OK, not recommended...) within hours. Not once throughout the recovery did I experience real pain. I took ibuprofen a couple times, but that was it. The wounds healed fast, without any real bleeding, and the stitches melted away without complication. In terms of swelling, at its worst it looked like just a mosquito bite on my cheek!! That, my friends, is the mark of an artist! Another thing - EVERYONE I spoke to, including his receptionists, aides, EVERYONE - was professional, friendly, and helpful. I had a TON of questions regarding insurance - no problem, they were all answered. Due to insurance issues, I had to reschedule several times - boom, no problem. I called the office once in a panic because I didn't know what the wound was supposed to look like - no problem, questions answered kindly, anxiety erased. For an oral surgeon who has such high ratings, scheduling was a cinch! I assume most people want to get their business done on Friday, but his Fridays were almost always open (as I learned the several times I had to reschedule.. heh). Wisdom tooth removal takes under a half hour or so for each - no problem. You go for a consultation visit, then the surgery, then follow-up a week later. (If you're really desperate, they can smush the consultation and the actual surgery into one visit.) As for the price - it really did not seem any different from any other places. Insurance (he's out of network for at least Cigna and Aetna) still covered nearly everything. Seriously. Reasonable pricing, amazing support staff, easy scheduling, friendly and caring doctor? AND most importantly, good, solid work?? I'm very skeptical as a rule, but this is really the best oral surgery experience you could ask for, hands down. read more

He also did an excellent job removing one of my molar. No pain & very minor swelling. I am very slowly trying to eat a sandwich right now. It is a laborious process, and my gums are sore, but I also haven't taken any Vicodin since Tuesday (http://www.yelp.com/biz/hanks-saloon-brooklyn#hrid:5bmXSgZ3JI-77GRrHWMzYA). I also haven't taken any ibuprofen...Dr. Calat was surprised: "Wow, no painkillers from Day 2?" but isn't it just a testament to his handiwork? I am also not a fan of pills. The only reason I finished my amoxicillin is because I was also sick - and terrified. For a prior procedure in 2011, with someone else, I never finished the penicillin prescription. So, yes, I might be my own worst enemy. I had two teeth taken out a week ago, almost to the hour. One was a severely impacted wisdom tooth Dr. Calat had to break into several pieces (thanks, I didn't want to know that...), and another was abscessed (dangerously infected; I guess he didn't want to see that, so we're even?). It cost me a good deal out of pocket because my United Healthcare dental insurance cap is $1000, but I am a big baby and don't trust anyone. I researched the heck out of this guy even after Ju L.'s glowing recommendation and referral - a referral gets you a free consultation, as does checking in via your smartphone's Yelp app. Dr. Calat is a charmer, that one. He knows to learn, then remember, details about you to make you feel at ease, and smiles to show off his own teeth. Sly. He was also kind enough to knock $50 off the price without the formality of purchasing a current Yelp deal - I was already in the office and had to change the treatment plan because I paid for the surgery on my own. I had a mini panic attack, internally, right before I was supposed to go under - things I am afraid of include needles and being unconscious - but there was a greater risk in not getting the abscessed tooth taken care of, and suddenly I woke up while they were finishing the stitches (even that is frighteningly loud), my face heavy and my voice muppet-y. I was alive! I gave him a hug. His prices hover around average but I know his implants are pretty expensive. I have to get one done soon, and need to figure out if I can afford to - I have never met a dental insurance provider that subsidizes implants - because I really don't want to go to anyone else at this point. I will say this: I'm going to try. The office is clean, he keeps gloves on only as long as necessary, so you might cause him to go through a few pairs if you are like me and stagger your questions, and every member of his staff is understanding and comforting. Considering I was presentable and fuctional enough to be at Hank's Saloon, barring how dumb a decision that was, there was little to no swelling and the bleeding subsided by the end of Monday evening. The Vicodin was mean to me, but trust me, I would have kept taking pills if I really needed to. Dr. Calat did his job brilliantly. Have you figured out I am a spaz who has no tolerance for pain? I stuck to my diet of baby cereal and tried not to abuse the wounds. I'm over that today. My follow-up was this morning and I'm healing just fine! I have only had a consultation here so far, and will follow up once I've had the surgery performed. So far I must say I have been incredibly impressed with the energy, kindness and enthusiasm of everyone in the office. On my initial call to make the appointment I asked a hundred questions and made the receptionist give me price quotes for every single possible scenario before agreeing to even schedule the consultation. Of course I dont really want to deal with my teeth and if she had sounded even slightly irritated with me that would have been enough to turn me off. It wouldnt have taken much in fact to send me running for the hills. Instead she put me completely at ease, the warmth of the staff here is genuine and by the end of the call I felt like I actually wanted to come take care of this whole implant thing with them. Like they might actually help me. At the consultation today I was very impressed. The total dollar amount came out precisely to the quoted amount. There was no upselling. The doctor was wonderfully attentive, down to earth, realistic, patient with my questions. Reassuring. and a bunch of thank you cards in the waiting room made me feel like the people who went through with the same procedure were very glad that they had. All this is making me feel good about coming back here for the surgery. I'm suddenly dazzled by the sense of possibility: What if every nagging problem I've postponed dealing with could simply be brought to an office staffed by such pleasant and competent people? So I should've sooner left a review for this awesome doctor but I got caught up. This man is so patient & understanding, not to mention confident in his practice! I found him & visited a couple of weeks ago with my loving bf next to me bc I was hella NERVOUS. I was to have a fraction of a tooth removed and just knew I needed to be put to sleep. Little did I know, Dr. Calat assured me that I didn't need that procedure and that he was confident he I could do it! And he was right!! I trusted this doc with my life literally lol bc one I didn't know him, I didn't know his work but his calm, cool, reassuring nature allowed me to trust him. Not only that my insurance didn't pay for the entire procedure so he gave me a discount bc he felt I really needed to take care of it, which i did!! Long story short, let's just say I didn't even go to my usual dentist for this procedure bc well, unfortunately I didn't trust that she'd take her time and really cared. Dr. Calat is the best! I would get my wisdom teeth removed by him any day of the week! He took the time to sit with me, go over my x-rays and give me all the details about my wisdom tooth removal. I had a lot of questions and he was very patient and answered everything for me. His staff also took care of everything involving insurance coverage and payment. I ended up splitting my payment between a few sources (insurance, FSA card and CC) and they were understanding about the whole thing. They made me feel very comfortable about the big decision that I was making. The day of the procedure, he and his staff were super nice and the office ambiance was very calming. They went over my care instructions with me (and my boyfriend too!) and gave him my prescriptions so he could run out and get them filled while I was getting worked on. They even let me pick the pandora station that we would have on! I healed up quickly, and when I called with a couple of follow up questions, his staff was knowledgeable and very sweet. My follow up appointment was short and sweet, and I had healed up well (not like some of those wisdom tooth horror stories - I had no pain and very very mild swelling!) The surgery went perfectly - I had an infection on one of the teeth and I was able to schedule the procedure for the same day. I had a cold and though the doctor did not give me full anesthesia for safety reasons, I did not feel a thing during the surgery and found the pre- and post- operative procedures to be extremely professional. My recovery was absolutely amazing - I was eating soft solids later that day and experienced virtually no swelling, and stuck just to Advil for the (moderate) pain - two days later and I am eating whatever I want and plan to be back at school in record time. After stalling on getting my wisdom teeth extracted for way to long, I finally decided it was time. Since my dentist (Dr. Shin), who I totally trust, recommended Dr. Calat I really didn't search around for alternatives. Well I'm glad I didn't! From the day of consultation to the day of surgery, Dr. Calat and his staff were nothing but courteous and helpful! Everyone is telling the truth when they say that Dr. Calat is one of the most calm and assuring doctors ever - he will give you a walk through of your x-rays, the procedure and answer any questions you may have. It's obvious that he is very interested in making sure the patient feels comfortable. The day of surgery I opted for IV sedation so I was knocked out! (Which was necessary for me since I've never had any oral surgery and this whole thing was making me a tad bit nervous..lol.) But I remember waking up and my friend who was picking me up was sitting in the room and all I thought to myself was "strange, why would they have him sit through the surgery?" not realizing it was all done!! And now a little over 24 hours later and negative 3 wisdom teeth, I DO NOT FEEL A THING! I didn't even take the ibuprofen after the first time - and I honestly only took that b/c I was afraid I would start feeling pain once the numbness wore off, not b/c I was actually in any pain. This smooth sailing procedure I'm sure is a result of several factors but I don't doubt that Dr. Calat's expertise is one of the main reasons! Dr. Calat is great! I don't have insurance, only a "savings plan" called Dental Save which entitles me to a discount off of their regular prices. I was nervous that it would be really expensive, but I feel it was very reasonably priced. Dr. Calat knew that money was an issue for me and recommended that I stay awake during the procedure to avoid the extra cost of the general anesthesia. While in the dentist chair, Dr. Calat asked me to name a few of my favorite bands and then proceded to program Pandora to play some of my fav tunes during the surgery. Awesome!! The procedure itself was surprisingly quick and basically pain free with the novocaine. There is some pressure, a little discomfort and a somewhat disturbing cracking sound, but during the entire operation, Dr. Calat walked me through exactly what he was doing and I didn't regret being awake for the entire thing. It's definitely managable for those that aren't too anxious about dental work. He did a wonderful job with not only the actual surgery, but also with explaining everything and making me feel as comfortable as possible. I highly recommend him! read more

I recently visited Dr calat to get my infected wisdom tooth removed in Hoboken office . I was severely suffering from pain before I went to him . I really loved the doctor he is extremely professional and good at his work and his staff are really warm and friendly . I did my surgery with local anesthesia he was all the time comforting me every second since I was awake and also the following day his nurse called me to check on if I am doing okay which I really appreciated . I Usually never leave reviews. But my experience with Dr. Calat was AMAZIng!!!! I was very nervous coming in for my consultation and right there decided to take out my 3 wisdom teeth. He was very professional and made me feel very comfortable. I decided to do IV SEDATION . It was amazing. I didn't notice how i fell asleep and woke up just feeling a bit numb . This was the easiest trip to the dentist I've ever had. I live in New Jersey but I was sent to Dr. Calat by my orthodontist. He wanted my lower canine tooth removed to fix my cross-bite. He said he only really trusted Dr. Calat to do it without damaging the hardware of the lingual braces. Dr. Calat and his assistant Zjaye did an amazing job. I didn't feel a thing, not even the needle at the start. The tooth was already out before I realized they had started working on it. They are super friendly, down to Earth and are always making sure you are comfortable. I went back to get my two bottom wisdom teeth removed and it was just as painless. I would especially recommend them to anyone who is anxious about trips to the dentist. I was handed an iPod and told to pick music to listen to through the office speakers while they worked on me. Dr. Calat performed my wisdom tooth extraction in March 2021. Dr. Calat's warm and welcoming bedside manner during the initial consultation put me at ease before the surgery. Together we developed a treatment plan that addressed my concerns regarding the procedure, anesthesia, and recovery, and I appreciated his eagerness to answer any questions I had along the way. He was also an excellent communicator during the surgery itself, walking me through the process and empowering me to briefly stop the procedure if I felt uncomfortable or needed a break. Dr. Calat completed the extraction faster than I expected, and I barely felt anything under local anesthesia.
