I started going to Dr. Sherman when I was in my early 20s I am almost 50! Dr Sherman is the best oral surgeon around! I had an issue in the past with a wisdom tooth touching a nerve, Dr. Sherman was so detailed and nice regarding why he couldn't remove it at that time! I appreciated his honesty, he was right the pain went away for years and when it came back I was able to get it removed as it shifted to a safer location. Common sense after researching wisdom teeth that are touching a nerve even slightly, its too risky for a surgeon to remove it as it could cause more harm than good removing it when it is touching any nerve! Excellent and caring oral surgeon and office staff. They are honest and put the patient first.

I was looking for an oral surgeon to get an emergency wisdom tooth extraction done, and ended up at Dr Sherman's clinic (as he was in my insurance network). I left a note late in the evening around 8.45pm, got a call back around 8.30 in the morning, and my appointment was set for 11am the same day! The clinic was easy to locate and a 10mins walk from the 33rd St PATH station (I was coming in from JC). Barbara (the receptionist and assistant), was quick to start the paper work and I was in the dentist's operating chair within 15mins. Dr Sherman gave a patient hearing to my case, and after checking the x-ray, gave me a crisp and concise overview of what needs to be done next. After my consent, I was given a local anesthesia, and two of my wisdom tooth were extracted, the whole process taking about 15-20mins. I was then given a detailed advisory about the post surgical care to be taken, and was on my way back home in the next 10mins! There was minimal pain once the anesthesia effects sidelined. I visited again within a week to get the stitch removed, and was out of the clinic again in 5mins!!! I am very grateful to Dr Sherman for the quick attention I received, and for non-existent surgical or post surgical issues. I would highly recommend Dr Sherman to anyone looking for simple to complex dental procedures. Believe me, you will definitely save some time by skipping appointments with primary/inexperienced dentists, who focus more on cleaning and cosmetic stuff, and end up referring you to specialists, for complex work. read more

Dr. Sherman and his staff are absolutely fantastic. I waited too long to take care of my wisdom teeth, and Dr. Sherman walked me through the risks associated with them. He was quite conservative with his suggestions, but I really appreciated that. After a consultation and discussion, his team was able to contact my insurance in a few minutes and get me my coverage details and pricing. I went ahead, and he quickly and easily removed the tooth that was currently causing me pain in minutes and sent me off with clear and concise instructions for care. Since Dr. Sherman used local anesthetic, I was able to just take the subway home myself to rest. I then, stupidly, drank out of a few straws within a few days after surgery. Obviously that was not smart on my part (I just wasn't thinking!). My pain set in around 9 pm one night, and I was up most of the night with issues. I called and left a message for Dr. Sherman with the answering service around 5:30 am, and had a call back from him by 7:50 am!! He got me in as soon as they opened, and fixed me right up. So, I probably did the same that all of you have done. I found Dr. Sherman on yelp and saw all of the good reviews and immediately booked my appt. Unfortunately my visit was just like the few of those, who also have low ratings for the man. The front desk staff was GREAT, as soon as I met the Dr. however, everything went down hill. I did't even make it through the visit. The first thing he said to me was that he never heard of my insurance before and that it looks like it does not cover dental. I explained to him that it falls under Cigna and I have been using dental for quite some time, and that I called and made sure he fell in my network. His response was "well it must not be very good then". Next, he proceeded to tell me, that whoever was doing my dental work prior was horrible, and that all my teeth might fall out when I get older. He also then stated that my mother does not care about me because if she did, she would have made sure that I was seeing a dentist more regularly. That was the last straw, I immediately got up and walked out. He was completely unprofessional and offensive, and on top of that, made me feel completely humiliated. If you ever need an amazing oral surgeon for any reason, but particularly wisdom teeth, this is your man, hands down. I've waited a full week since I've had my wisdom teeth out to review him, and I am way impressed. I was beyond terrified about having 'em out, because everyone and their mother had a horror story about getting theirs out that they wanted to share with me (thanks guys...). First, I went in for a consultation, which was just an X-ray and chatting with him. Really friendly guy, definitely spent as much time as I needed discussing my teeth, and made me feel really comfortable. He said he would not take the bottom ones out because they were so close to the nerve, and that if I really wanted them out, i seriously consider the risks and do my research carefully, but he personally did not advise it, and said he would be happy to have me come in every year or so to check them until they were ready to come out. The top ones, which were out, he recommended pulling, so I went ahead to schedule. He stopped me from scheduling before Memorial Day weekend just in case I had any complications, he wasn't going to be around for the weekend and didn't want to leave me with gaping holes in my mouth without someone to turn to. I was amazed and pleased, and scheduled for after. The extraction itself: I went in wigging out. I hate pain, I hate people touching my teeth, etc. I asked him for gas, and he refused, saying that nitrous causes a 500% increase in probability of your kids having cleft palate and a number of other birth defects. What? Who knew? Most doctors just shove it on! He froze me up with local anesthetic and 15 minutes later I was toothless and dumb. Quick care instructions and I was home 2 hours after I had left, codeine and antibiotics in hand. I barely had any pain afterwards, also, which amazed me. No swelling, but 2 days later one side got painful and swollen. I called to ask what I should do, he said, get in here right now. I went in, and he saw me right away, cleaned everything out and put some medicine under the gums, and made me promise to call him the next day. He also pulled out the stitches I had in at the time so that I wouldn't have to come back again specially for that. I definitely felt like Dr. Sherman really cared about making the experience as painless and worry free as possible, and will definitely be sticking with him for future decisions about oral surgery. I know he takes MetLife for dental insurance, and possibly some others. I recommend him highly, and my dentist, who recommended Dr. Sherman to me, says he is probably the best oral surgeon in the city. Also, his office is in a pretty convenient location (Murray Hill-ish), the 6 train stops at 33rd or you can take anything else to Grand Central. read more

This is my most meaningful contribution to the Yelp community. Yelpers, if you need to get your wisdom teeth out, absolutely come to Dr. Sherman. I had missed the golden age for getting them out - between the ages of 17 and 20. Why? Well in addition to still being a high schooler who has the luxury of a mother bringing you ice cream while you bask on the couch, it's also the period when there are minimal complications. Once you hit age 25 there is a 10% risk of damage to a facial nerve (I will explain why I know this nerd-ism later). Yelpers, a lady never tells her age, but I am definitely closer to 25 than 17. All my friends were telling me nightmare stories - spewing blood from their mouth, cheeks swollen to chipmunk proportions, dry sockets, Vicodin rampages, the works. This is a procedure I would have put off until eternity, but the pain / evident infection in my right bottom tooth spoke volumes: the curtain had risen, and the time was now. I went in for a consultation, where Dr. Sherman gave me a NYT article entitled "Wisdom Teeth: The Hazards." Oh goody, I thought. The article was rife with alarming statistics (such as the one mentioned above) about all the complications that can occur in the removal process. He then proceeded to show me an x-ray of my teeth and point out the nerve running beneath my wisdom teeth. "If I hit this nerve," he cautioned, "your face will be paralyzed." Most excellent. Needless to say when I came back in for the procedure the next day, I was shaking in my boots. Dr. Sherman only used local anesthetic on me, so I was actually awake for the whole procedure (which I was actually a bit disappointed by, because I was really looking forward to all the hilarious shit I was going to say while still loopy). He only did the right side during my first appointment, and told me I'd have to come back in a week later to do the left side. The whole thing took 20 minutes. Seriously. I didn't feel a thing, but kept my eyes tightly closed because I knew if I saw forceps emerging from my mouth with a bloody tooth I would pass the f out. They give you gauze and codeine and instructions on care. When I got home I expected the full gamut of suffering but none came. Literally, I didn't even pop a Tylenol. All in all, with my dental insurance (MetLife Dental) covering the majority of the procedure, I paid somewhere around $400 for the removal of both sides. Two hours after my procedure I was ready to see people, and I was eating solid foods by the next day (was unable to use my wisdom teeth extraction as a mandatory diet, after all). All my wisdom-toothless friends (read: naysayers) were epically jealous. So what's the takeaway? Do I possess good dental karma? Am I just an amazing patient? Perhaps. Really I think Dr. Sherman is just an talented oral surgeon with years and years of experience, know-how, and excellent bedside manner. He told me I was the best patient ever, and I am inclined to believe him. read more

Seriously, just wow. For years, I knew I had these big teeth growing in the back of my mouth, and that they would never come all the way out, and that eventually I'd have to get them out, but I was scared. Horror stories abound, I had built up in my mind the idea that when the time comes, my wisdom teeth will have to get broken into pieces, incisions all over my gums, and hours in some kind of oral surgery contraption while they're slowly drilled out of my head. Forget the recovery, I've seen plenty of pictures of kids with chipmunk cheeks and blood all over their faces, weeks of missed school, etc. You name it, I googled it, and let's face it, I was scared to death of getting my wisdom teeth out. So finally, the inevitable happened, and an infection started in my lower right wisdom tooth. My boyfriend sent me to Dr. Sherman. After assessing the situation, Dr. Sherman leisurely says, "yeah, so if you want we can just take out the right two today..." WHAT?! TODAY?! I panicked. This was really happening. Palms started sweating, feet wobbling around in the chair, and my mind started racing. Dr. Sherman's assistant cheers me on, reasoning with me that if I come back next week, it'd just be another week of worrying, plus another trip all the way back. Screw it, let's do this. Before I know it, I'm bibbed, novocained, and Dr. Sherman says, "ok, i'm just going to test the novocaine..." Two seconds later, out comes my top wisdom tooth. WTF? He tricked me! :) The bottom one, which required an incision was done within the next five minutes, literally so fast that I didn't have enough time to freak out. So, to summarize, less than ten minutes after, "screw it, let's do this," I was standing up and strolling along to the waiting room to get my coat. Why the hell did I put this off for soo long? I got to share my war story with the nervous folks in the waiting room also there for their wisdom teeth, hopefully easing some suspense for them. Dr. Sherman is the best. Both he and his staff put me at ease and made the situation the best it could possibly be. My recovery was a piece of cake, I didn't even have to take the pain meds they gave me, and was in school the next day. If you need your wisdom teeth out, stop avoiding and just go to Dr. Sherman! read more

Dr. Sherman is a great oral surgeon. He was highly recommended by my dentist for wisdom tooth removal. I showed up and had minimal wait time. I met Dr. Sherman, he put me at ease and removed my tooth is under 10 minutes, at least it seemed that way. So filling out forms, and the procedure and x-rays, paying my bill took less than 1 hour. Dr. Sherman was a complete RACIST jerk. I was referred to him after a major car accident left me with three loosened teeth. My dentist thought it best to have an oral surgeon assess the situation. I was told by his staff that he accepted No-fault dental insurance and was told to come in. He was very rude from the beginning of our visit asking "How did you hear about me" and "how did your dentist hear about me" He spoke to me like I was a small child and was very condescending. He then went on to say "if you are trying to get a big payout from the accident it is not going to happen" I was then forced to give my dental/health insurance card for the series of x-rays he took knowing that he did not or could not help me after I explained everything should be billed to no-fault. read more

I saw Dr Sherman for wisdom teeth removal and was so impressed with everything. He took my wisdom teeth out in two appointments, doing two teeth at a time. Both times, I was out of the chair in less than 15 minutes. I never waited to see him for more than a few minutes. After hearing horror stories from everybody I know about swollen cheeks and liquid for a full week, I was dreading the procedure but I was barely swollen and actually able to eat solid food the next day! Great Dentist - Lovely Office - Make sure you ask to keep your tooth I have no dental insurance but the prices were not too steep to get my wisdom teeth out. Relatively painless and I only suffered some discomfort a week later. Ask to keep your tooth so that the office doesn't send it out for a biopsy. I didn't realize and was not informed that they would send out my tooth (which I would have happily kept) and now I'm getting hounded by a pathology lab to get the biopsy paid for. If you talk to Dr Sherman he will help you handle this problem if it arises but I say avoid it all together and keep the tooth! read more

I went there to get my wisdom teeth removed. He was knowledgeable and gave me good advice on if I should removed both or just one. ( I had the other two removed a couple years ago and it was a horrible experience.) Dr Sherman got the job done in 5 minutes and as he promised, it did not hurt! I wanted to hug him when it was over! Doctor Sherman is amazing. Going to the dentist always scared me but my experience with DR. Sherman changed my viewpoint. I had one wisdom tooth removed last year June and a second removed today. The removal process was fast, and the pain after is bearable. I felt comfortable and this doctor is very personable. He remembered my husband and where he works. I visited Dr. Sherman's office yesterday afternoon for a small procedure at 2pm and I was out by 2:25 to make it back to work. He was one of the most pleasant doctors I have ever met. He took the time to review my chart, my home address (Queens) and talk to me about sports, going to high school in Queens and growing up in Brooklyn. While talking he swiftly came over and made the necessary injection so quickly that I didn't know or build up any apprehension. I would certainly recommend him. Highly recommended. I had three wisdom teeth removed and one non-wisdom tooth that was badly broken. I was also advised on what to do with my other teeth, and why. Convenient scheduling at 8.30 in the morning, clear explanation of the procedure. Explanation of what to do following the procedure. No problems with processing insurance (Metlife Dental / Aetna), etc. I did get a bill from the oral pathology lab that I had not been told anything about, but for me this is not a big issue. What I wanted was not saving money, and not even painless procedure, but primarily quick results, and as reliable as possible --- and this has certainly been the case. Dr. Sherman's office is the most professional establishment I have visited in Manhattan. Immediately once I arrived they made arrangements to contact the radiologist to obtain the necessary x-rays and scans of my teeth. The secretary/assistant and Dr. Sherman were highly focused on providing the best customer service. The doctor provided materials to me about removal of wisdom teeth and he explained to me the pros and cons of the procedure for each tooth. He provided a recommendation and I felt very satisfied that I understood the issues and made an informed decision about what to do with my one wisdom tooth. For frame of reference, I'm a medical student in good health. When I read the other reviews of Dr. Sherman, I couldn't believe them---it seems impossible that wisdom teeth removal could be literally painless. BUT IT WAS LITERALLY PAINLESS. I went to Dr. Sherman because I was having headaches and jaw pain. He took an X-ray and then suggested that he extract only my upper right wisdom tooth. I really respected his conservatism when it comes to extractions (he says you should only pull them if they cause problems) and that in general waiting / allowing them to erupt and grow in a little greatly reduces complications of the procedure. (I asked him why so many people have wisdom tooth horror stories, and he said he thought it's because other doctors extract teeth before they need to, which often necessitates general anesthesia as well as stitches and longer recovery time). The moment I consented, he numbed the gums (even the lidocaine injections were painless....he must have used an extremely fine needle), waited 5 minutes for the anesthetic to take full effect, and then extracted the wisdom tooth (took 1 minute tops). It was surreal. There was no pain, no cracking sounds, just a faint and not unpleasant tension when he was pulling down on the tooth, which literally came out in under 1 minute. What was truly incredible is that even after the anesthetic wore off later in the day, I felt very little pain. I took advil once about 5 hours after the procedure, and then didn't need it after that. I had zero complications. And Dr. Sherman called me personally that night to make sure I was ok. While I know that my case was very straightforward and not every extraction is so easy, I absolutely recommend Dr. Sherman to anyone who needs a oral surgery procedure. He is conservative in his actions, thoughtful, and straightforward about risks. His office staff is rather curt / unhelpful with insurance forms, but he is so fantastic that it doesn't matter. read more

I agree with everything the first reviewer wrote! I had such a great experience getting one of my wisdom teeth pulled that I feel compelled to recommend Peter Sherman to THE WORLD. Honestly, I *wish* I had known about him when I had a horrific root canal a while ago; I probably wouldn't have had a panic attack in the chair. It truly couldn't have gone any better, and I was terrified going into this. Everyone who works there is beyond friendly and caring. He was quick to find things we had in common that we could talk about, and he made an effort to put me at ease. He must get so sick of repeating the same things again and again, but you never would know, because he treats you like an old friend. The entire staff were all very professional and efficient. After some novocain, it took him about two minutes to painlessly yank my tooth out - I didn't even know that it had happened! I've never had such a positive experience with any doctor, and I will definitely see him again if I need future dental work. read more

Dr. Sherman was a God-send for me. I cannot recommend him highly enough. I had a wisdom tooth sitting on my nerve; 2 oral surgeons (including one who is the chair of oral and maxillofacial surgery at a major new york hospital) refused to perform the surgery because they considered it too risky. Dr. Sherman took his own panel profile, explained to me what he thought the risks were and whether he thought he could do it without nerve damage, and we agreed to take the tooth out. I was out of his office in 30 minutes, wisdom tooth out. He gave me painkillers and detailed instructions before I left his office. I called once because I had a question about the painkillers. He immediately came on the phone and told me what to do. He's completely capable, treats people with so much respect (gives you research etc.), makes himself available, is really friendly. I had a wisdom tooth removed by Dr. Sherman last week. I was very nervous but he put me at ease right away. He told me that I wouldn't feel a thing and that it would only take 15 minutes - he was right. Altough a bit traumatic, having someone pound a sharp metal object with a hammer into your mouth, it was 100% pain free. And my recovery has been textbook. read more

The experience from start to finish was a breeze. Went in for a consult and dr Sherman explained very clearly which wisdom teeth should come out and which ones could wait.. I scheduled the extraction on a Friday - the procedure took 10 mins and involved a tooth being drilled in half and pulled out, all under local anesthesia. It was a little uncomfortable but dr sherman walked me through the whole thing. Like other reviewers said, I didn't need any pain meeds other than advil. It's been a month now, and it's healed nicely with no complications. I would seriously only trust dr Sherman with my wisdom teeth. read more

Dr. Sherman is the absolute best. My girlfriend and I suddenly found ourselves in his office, having been referred there by the root canal specialist. My girlfriend said that inside the procedure room, there was a drawing on the wall made for him by one of patients, in which he was represented as a wizard of teeth. This seems like a keen representation. My girlfriend had a number of complicated dental complications/emergencies going on all at once, and Dr. Sherman handled them with the utmost calm and finesse. Each time he was going to begin a procedure, he would come out into the waiting room before hand and explain the process to me, and how long it would take. He is just absolutely top notch, I couldn't recommend him more highly. Also, the procedures weren't cheap, but by estimation, they could have easliy costed a whole lot more. read more

A-ma-zing. I was terrified because the last time I had to take my wisdom tooth out, I walked out of the dentist's office with a pounding jaw and blood all over my face. Then over the next few days my face became the size of a watermelon. This time it was the complete opposite. The actual extraction took about one minute and I was out of the office in twenty. No general anesthesia needed, just local. No meds prescribed either. I like that Dr Sherman's a responsible practitioner and doesn't prescribe narcotics and antibiotics as if they were candy. Recommend him 100%. The lady in the front office could be a tad bit nicer though. read more

Oh I loved Dr. Sherman. For me the competency comes first. It was going to be my first extraction in the States, plus I had a difficult wisdom tooth (crook rooted, tilted and impacted) so I consulted other surgeons and they all said the same thing that Dr. Sherman said when he saw my tooth for the first time. He knows what he's doing. During the procedure he kept explaining me everything he did and he is good at making his patients feel comfortable and relaxed. He is very fast. I had some complications after the surgery (nothing to do with him, my tooth was very deep so the whole was also deep, blood clotted and caused a lot of pain) and he was super caring. He got me in the minute I called him. I went to see Dr. Sherman for another procedure. He removed the infected tip of a root. It was one of the big molars and that went pretty well. It was much less painful than the wisdom tooth extraction because the procedure was less complicated. He is great! read more
