Short Review I slept…read morebetter here than at the Hilton and the Hamilton I stayed at on the same trip. The room was clean and comfortable, with a fridge and microwave. Hot water, genuinely good toilet paper (yes, that matters), and the heat kept the room very warm--which mattered since I stayed the first week of February. The place is clearly in the middle of being modernized, so your stay may not look exactly like mine--but that's part of the appeal. I'm honestly looking forward to coming back and watching it evolve. The Long Review I grew up in this town. I've been back on and off over the last 20 years, more off than on. This time around, I realized I'm an old man now and didn't want to stay with family the whole trip. I asked my brother where I should stay, and he recommended Hemlock Inn. The owners, Taylor and Leanne, are the kind of people who--once you meet them--you may find yourself unconsciously humming John Cougar Mellencamp songs. Two American Kids doing the best that they can. They're earnest, kind, and clearly invested in what they're building. When I was a kid, this place was called the Little Brown Inn, and honestly it always kind of creeped me out. It sat off the road, wasn't well lit, and had that slightly eerie small-town motel vibe. Taylor is clearly in the process of changing all of that. I stayed during the off-season, the first week of February--and I'll say this: if you want to actually feel small-town life, winter is the time to visit. Summer here is chaotic. Winter is when the town exhales. Loudonville in the winter feels real and it's beautiful. The room itself was simple but solid--clean, quiet, and warm, with everything I needed. No nonsense. No surprises. Just comfortable lodging run by people who care about the details. I also had a chance to chat with Taylor during the first couple nights I was there, and what stood out wasn't just what's happening with the inn--but what's happening in the town. He talked about young professionals moving back, investing time and energy, and quietly reshaping Loudonville for the better. And honestly, I was astonished this time through. The town feels different--in the best way. That's part of why this review probably reads like more than just a hotel stay--and I'm okay with that. This place feels like a reflection of the town right now: being cared for, improved thoughtfully, and built with intention rather than flash. Not everything is finished yet--and that's actually part of the charm. It feels honest. It feels like people doing the work, not pretending it's already done. If you value comfort, sincerity, and a sense of place over perfection, this is worth your time. And if you're returning to a hometown you haven't seen in years, staying here might surprise you in the best way. I'll be back--and I'm genuinely curious to see what it becomes

It was April 8, 2024, and we were looking for a place to spend the night on a trip from Vermont to…read moreour home in Chicago. I mention the date only because a full solar eclipse occurred that day, and all the places we could easily reach were in areas that experienced a 100% total eclipse. While we normally pay less than $150 a night for hotels, we were seeing prices from $250 a night to over $900 a night because of the eclipse. When searching the Internet for overnight lodging during our trip from Chicago to Vermont, we'd seen an article about The Hemlock Inn that explained a couple had purchased an old motor inn and were in the process of refurbishing it. We normally use Interstate 90 when traveling between Chicago and Vermont, and, while the idea of supporting a couple trying to build a business really appealed to us, we decided to stay in AirBNB along I-90 on our way to Vermont. On the way home, however, in an effort to avoid spending $250 or more for our April 8th stay, we gave the Hemlock Inn a call and were quoted much less than $150 for a room with a queen size bed. So we decided to spend the night at the inn and follow U.S. Route 30 back to Chicago from there. I'm guessing The Hemlock Inn was built before the I-71 Interstate was constructed - back when anyone traveling from Cincinnati to Columbus to Cleveland took U.S. Route 3, often referred to as "3-C Highway." Today, the building appears to be in very good condition, but it does have the look of a motel someone might have stopped at while driving their brand new 1959 Chevy Impala from Columbus to Cleveland. Every room has an exterior door that opens to the parking lot and a second door that opens to a common hallway leading to the office. We were very happy with our overnight stay. The guy we spoke with was very friendly and helpful. The room, while not huge, had a queen size bed, television, small table, two chairs, small fridge, and microwave. We didn't feel cramped, there was room for our 65 pound Labrador Retriever's crate, the bed was comfortable, and everything was very clean. Our room was on the back side of the Inn, neither or us heard any road noise, and we both enjoyed a good night's sleep. As an added bonus, there's a walking/bike path at the front of the hotel that allowed me to easily walk our dog both north and south from the inn. Don't get me wrong - The Hemlock Inn isn't the Ritz. But we got a nice, clean, comfortable room at a very reasonable price. If you like to support small businesses and really appreciate businesses that provide great value for reasonable prices, then I'm very comfortable recommending that you stay at The Hemlock Inn.

I come to Ashland several times a year for seminars and conferences…read more The first time I came, I stayed in a nondescript motel and I knew I didn't want to do that again. The College House B&B is lovely, with a very friendly owner, Kathy Kollar. While there isn't a common living room in the house, the dining room is spacious and does have some extra chairs for conversation. There is a small parlor/office that has a piano and lots of books. The best common room is the screened-in patio at the back of the house; it has lovely wicker furniture and lots of space for conversation, games, reading or times of quiet. There's also a small exercise room with a treadmill! There are 4 guest rooms, each with its own "department" theme (Music, History, English and Art). I've stayed in the Music and English Department rooms. Each had a flat-screen TV with cable as well as a VCR/DVD player, jetted tub, (the one in the English room is HUGE!) and heated tile floors in the bathrooms. There are comfy robes in the closet for use while at the inn. There is also a small library of VHS tapes and DVDs to borrow. You will always find chocolate by your bed, too. A lovely touch. Naturally, breakfast comes with your stay and Kathy serves the meal at whatever time you desire. I've had breakfast all along the morning spectrum, from 6 through 9! Her breakfasts are always delicious, and are nicely varied. Sometimes a simple waffle with sausage, the next day a perfect quiche. Her specialty is "candied" bacon that is downright addictive! There's always fresh fruit and good coffee. During my most recent stay she had a couple of vegans in the house (I'm 90% vegan) so she made some extra special veggie sausage patties for us (homemade...no soy protein!) and a delicious tofu scramble. Kathy is always willing to change up her menu to take dietary restrictions into account. She loves to treat her guests well! In the dining room you will find a small fridge, microwave, water cooler/heater and plenty of tea, hot chocolate packets and popcorn. If you peek into the kitchen, there are usually fresh baked cookies or brownies under a glass dome, luring you to come in and enjoy! This is my home-away-from home in Ashland and I hope more people will discover this place and enjoy Kathy's delightful hospitality!!

They were also on site and in contact to check up on how my stay was going.Kathy even left a homemade treat for me on the porch 1 morning. The property and the cottage were both immaculately kept. The hot tub was a nice feature for relaxing. The coziness of the cottage made it difficult to leave for adventure but there is plenty of that in the area. It was also very unleveled. The picnic table could not be leveled due to poor construction of the sites. The women's shower and bathroom area was FILTHY!!! There was feces on the toilets and mud and hair in the showers and the curtain was moldy! There was no faucet that would control the water spigot and no shower heads! YUCK!!! The lady at the office apologized but it was unhealthy to even consider using these facilities!!! The men's shower was only operational while you pushed the control valve!! So water did not constantly stay in and there is NO adjustment for the temperature! This camping area looks to be rented to regulars with Fifth Wheels. Anyway, don't recommend it if you need or want to use the bathroom facilities!! GROSS!

The have a lot of events that they run and I wish they were open all year. They are only open for the camping season, but they have pull through spots, even tent spots, a small laundromat. The only downside is there is no sewer hook up but randy will come around once a week and pump out your sewer tank for you! So not really a huge inconvenience. Yurts and cabins are available. There is a section for full timers with decks and fencing. Pond for fishing, separate pond for paddle boats. Jump pad, many playscape, and craft house/pavilion. There isn't much area here. Tiffin is 40 mins away. Decent stop if passing through.

Seasonal campers were pretty welcoming and nice unlike the KOA...it did get quite loud and rowdy Friday night and didn't calm down til closer to midnight/1am. Traveling with young kids (infant and toddler) this made it difficult for them to sleep. It did not bother our older children. Pool was nice. Bathrooms weren't fantastic but did flush.

They also allowed us to leave our canoe at their livery and take the bus back after canoeing. Aside from unexpectedly having to pay for showers, it was a nice place to stay on such short notice.
