TL;DR: I paid over $1,000 at Midas for spark plug replacement and one ignition coil. The same work would've cost ~$500-800 elsewhere. Get a second opinion if you can. I'm sad and regretful about my most recent experience at this Midas location. I brought my car in on short notice because the check engine and "trac off" lights came on, and the car was jerking while accelerating. I was charged $219 for a diagnostic, and the issue was found to be a rusty ignition coil (#4). The "minimum" recommended repair was to replace all 4 spark plugs and ignition coil #4, which I agreed to because I couldn't safely drive the car elsewhere. Here's where things went downhill: They quoted me $1,550.65 to replace all 4 ignition coils including all other fees and replacing 4 spark plugs. I didn't authorize that - only the single rusty one - so the total bill came out to $1,049.48 for just 4 spark plugs and 1 ignition coil. That seemed really high for a 4-cylinder vehicle. To double-check, I called two other shops in Hilo (Goodyear and Lex Brodies) and asked for estimates on the same work including diagnostic, parts, and labor. Goodyear: ~$585 Lex Brodies: ~$809 I ended up going through with the Midas repair because I needed the car fixed immediately and couldn't drive it around to shop for prices. While I'm grateful the car is running again, I do feel ripped off after comparing prices. I also learned that Midas has very high labor fees compared to others. To be fair, I've had good experiences here in the past with oil changes and tire issues. But after this experience, I'll definitely be getting second opinions for anything major. read more

TLDR: Complete waste of my time. Thanks Midas. Details: I called the Hilo location to confirm they can indeed perform a 4 wheel alignment on my Saturn Sky. It's a "rare"ish kinda car so I called ahead to check before bringing it in as well as seeing if they had availability that day. The phone person said they did have availability and assured me that they could perform a 4 wheel alignment on my vehicle. I dropped the car off, the lady was polite(ish) but it was lunchtime so I can understand that. She warmed up a lil as I was friendly and talked to her some. :) I explained that I wanted specific alignment settings and that it was already set to GM specs by the dealer and drives fine. She asked me to email the settings so she could print them and give them to the tech. Sweet, all is going well so far. My plan was to leave the car with them because the appt was for later (12:30 and I was dropping off @ 11 something). So, I went to meet my wife @ Starbucks next door. I went back to Midas about 5 min later to request an initial settings printout (wanted to doublecheck what the dealership set it to) an my car is gone from where I parked it but not in the shop. I asked the receptionist about getting a printout and she assures me that they always include the before and after settings. Great! I ask where is my car (because I can see it is not in one of their bays) and she tells me the techs took it for a test drive. !! Umm, what? What exactly are you TESTING?!? I brought my car in for a specific service that did not involve any diagnostics. Fine, maybe this is your procedure, I calm down and try not to be too annoyed with her (she's not the one out joy riding my car). We head home and continue our day and about an hour later Midas calls to tell me they cannot align my car because they do not have the tool. Okay, yeah, so thank you so very much for wasting my time, gas (in TWO vehicles), and putting miles on my car for nothing. Specific complaints: 1. The initial phone person SHOULD have asked a tech. He obviously didn't KNOW the answer. But, nope... I'll just waste the customer, receptionist, AND tech's time by not taking a few min to check. I told him there was a special tool, but he ignored that. He was polite and friendly, but could have saved this whole negative experience with a simple question to a tech. 2. Midas had no business driving my vehicle without permission. I did not ask for any diagnostic drives. It's also funny how they were soooo in a hurry to "diagnostic" drive the sports car (at lunch time mind you) but then it still took them an hour for their computer to tell them they don't have the tool??? 3. Counter lady... I mean, yeah, she coulda been nicer, but given that she has to deal with jerks all day that assume a woman can't possibly know or understand cars... I can empathize. She was the second point of contact that could have save a lot of wasted time asking the techs my specific question "do you have the tool to align this car?" Some folks love Midas. Maybe some locations do better. This location is just not very organized/professional. read more

Worse business and customer service I have ever experienced. A super nice guy answers the phone and seems so accommodating... that's when the problem happens and you show up to the grouchy Asian Lori who is so rude and clearly hates her job. 3x I came to this place first time because it was familiar when I moved her, second because I had to return and last and never again because I was supporting a fundraiser that Midas was a part of. Never doing this again!!!!she tells me "you going to need to get out so we can drive your car" I'm lost, I ask why what's going on. Then she continues to rudely say "well all your other safety checks are not done property if they don't drive your car. " she clearly saw my confusion with that response.I was like ok I just was asking because you didn't say anything else except " you need get out!" We rented a car from a local on Turo. The car owner is a very nice and communicative lady, but not so diligent on maintenance. The car was 3k over on a tire rotation and more than 10k over on an oil change. What was worse, the car was VERY LOW on oil. I brought the rented car into Midas on a Saturday and even though they were short handed, Sean, who I assume is the manager, agreed to top off the car for us immediately, so we could safely continue our vacation. I was in and out in a matter of minutes. I came back for an oil change and tire rotation appointment a few days later and they got me in and out quickly that day as well. Their prices are fair, their safety inspection was honest, and Lori, who works at the front desk is super chill. They have good specials online. I wouldn't hesitate to bring my car here again if I'm ever in Hilo. read more

What a rip off for service maintenance prices and are really slow to get things done here.

Being a girl who should and would like to know more about cars, I'm always anxious and nervous whenever I need to get my car worked on. Like most people, I'm afraid I'll get scammed and/or feel stupid. The only thing that surprised me is the fact that if you take your car in for any kind of a diagnosis at any Midas and choose to decline their services you will be charged $40 after they figure out what your car needs. But if their diagnosis seems legit to you and you allow them to proceed with repairs, then the $40 fee is waved. They are 100% upfront with this company policy prior to making an appointment and it makes sense to me since an employee's time and energy goes into figuring out what's going on with your car. If you're just trying to find a mechanic and know your car needs work then it's not a big deal. I've taken my car to Hilo Midas twice. Once for a safety check (which was all good) and then last month it was painfully obvious that I needed brake/rotor help based on the terrible noise my car suddenly started to make. Both times the folks here were super nice and welcoming, patient with me even though I was really late for my most recent appointment (so embarrassing but I completely spaced it!) and they didn't try and up-sell me on anything or ever seem shady. The price they quoted me on over the phone was average and included parts/labor/tax for rotor resurfacing as well as new brake pads. I was so relieved when my car was done to hear that everything went smoothly and the price on the invoice was the exact price they gave me the day before. Seems like a lot of people have had adverse experiences here, but maybe because I've only ever worked hospitality and customer service jobs my expectations are a little more realistic? Firstly, I should have just gone elsewhere when I was told it was 80$ for an oil change (Goodyear is around 40 but their guy was out sick. Firestone starts at 40+/- but doesn't do safety). I wanted an oil change, safety check and wheel alignment. A few hours later she called me back telling me that they don't have whatever they need for the alignment so I was charged 20 for the alignment check instead of 99 for an alignment. Then I was told I need to change my wipers to pass safety (at least she didn't charge me for the saftey check. I've never had anyone even look at my wipers for saftey check...). If I had known they could only do an oil change I would've gone to Firestone. I won't ever come back here. Huge ripoff. read more

Had my muffler replaced, the female tech said it needed to be welded and another tech would do it I was told. The other tech came and just put a clamp on to hold my tail pipe after waiting a very long time. When I brought the car back complaining that my tail pipe came off,. I complained to the manager in charge about this experience. The manager at Midas turned jumped onto the tech who put the clamp on and RIPPED him an ASSHOLE right there in front of me. I was not impressed with witnessing this abuse. That was not my intention to have a hostel manager inappropriately tear into this tech. I really felt terrible. I didn't want anyone in trouble over this rusted tailpipe.... I am not returning to this establishment because of poor management bottom line!!! People make mistakes all the time. But it is the management who will break an business by treating their employees as second class citizens. Who hired this idiot? You don't treat human life in this manner. I should have looked on Yelp before I went. Went in this morning because my muffler had nearly fallen off. It needed to be reattached and some welding was obviously necessary. They charged me $20 just to look at it, when I told them what was wroing with it. They then presented me with two options - bypass the pre-muffler entirely or replace it. The cost of "doping it right?" $430 including tax. I was SHOCKED. I took it to Aloha Mufflers, and the guy did the job, right, without replacing the muffler, for $175. I paid him extra. I am just mad because I am out the $20. Like I said, should have gone to Yelp first! read more

Over the past two years, I have brought down 5 different cars for oil change, general maintenance and the occasional break-pad change or new tires. I have always been treated with respect and like a friend. They are honest mechanics and work very fast and clean. I use my cars in my TURO business and bring each car in every 6 weeks or so to take advantage of the Midas Touch Courtesy Check to review everything to make sure the cars I rent out through TURO are safe and in good condition to let out on the road. Went to Midas to do a safety inspection. Wish I could rate 0 stars but unfortunately have to put 1. They made us get out of our car with a sleeping baby. Usually you're just able to stay in your car with a max time of 5 minutes elsewhere. We waited inside with a now fussy baby for an hour!! All just for them to tell us we don't pass because of our 'tires' that were supposedly out of tread (our tires were fine) and insisted that we needed to buy tires in order to pass! They gave us an outrageous quote and I told them there's no way we can afford this right now, so they gave us a 30 day notice to have it completed! I had to pay for the full safety ($26) with NO SAFETY. What a waste of time and money! Do not ever go here for anything. You're better off going to a service station like 76 or Chevron. Echoing what the other reviewers have said, Midas in Hilo has some SHADY service. I've had multiple experiences with their shady business practice. Being a student, the only reason I went there was so that I could wait for my oil change by studying at Starbucks next door. I also had a $7 off an Oil Change coupon, but when I went in, the guy at the front said it wouldn't be cheaper using the coupon. So, I just went ahead with what he said. The oil change came out to $37, which I thought was a little pricey, but I figured I was alrdy there and I alrdy made an appointment, so I would stay. The second time I went without a coupon this time, and the SAME dude, gives me a quote for $50! I was a repeat customer and alrdy in the system. I was like "What? The last time I came, you only quoted me for $37." And he goes, "Oh sorry, I must've inputted something wrong." Then, he comes back with a quote for around $40...I also had another incident where I tried to help a friend get his hybrid car oil changed. Hybrids require special oil, and Midas was going to charge an arm and a leg for it, so I refused their service. BUT, they had alrdy DRAINED the car of the oil meaning I couldn't drive away. I had to check everywhere for the oil and finally found it at SEARS, and they still charged me over $20 to put the oil in which took 5 minutes. Needless to say, I stopped going back there. Goodyear RIGHT ACROSS the street has MUCH better prices and service, not to forget a nicer lounge and free Wi-Fi. Instead of waiting at Starbucks, I just waited there. read more

I've wrote a review on Google review for this business. But i want to get my words out so i paste the same review here. I hope you could read this before consider giving them your business. I have had good services from them for oil change and tire rotation in the past, but the most recent exchange with the manager was very poor. The exchange I had had with them most recently happened when I went to pick up my car after the scheduled normal oil change, I discovered the front side fender of my car was damaged (It could have happened with jacking up the car at the wrong place) When i pointed out to them the obvious damage on my car, they denied the possibility that they could have had done it, they told me i did not know my car better. However, they offered to help to repair the damage. However, their repair made the damage worse and at that point, they decided to completely deny my case. B/c i do not have a photo of my car prior sending my car in to Midas, there is a lack of arguable evidence that my insurance company could use to pursue them legally. As an average honest customer, you would understand that there is no incentive for me to tell you negatively about a business publicly. But i am sharing my personal experience and a warning message: Think twice before sending your car to them. read more

Took my Toyota Camry to Midas where I've had the car serviced for several years. The people there have always been friendly, conscientious and while not inexpensive have always fixed the problems and had the car back to me at the promised time. I noticed some time ago that Midas was under new management but had no car problems until last week, when I brought it in with a leaking brake line. The estimate for the fix was $50 for the part and $80 for labor. I was also told it really should have the brake line replaced on the other side in addition to a brake system evaluation for $30, a CV boot replacement for $300 and a brake fluid flush for $100, raising the cost to almost $1000. Having had much experience with often unnecessary add ons in service industries I opted to have the second brake line replaced which seemed reasonable but declined the other services. To be fair, the suggested add ons weren't part of the original problem which prompted my decision, but neither were they outrageously unnecessary. I didn't think much more about it but when my wife picked up the car the bill which should have been $260 plus tax was close to $500. After she brought the car home I looked at the bill to find a $253 charge in small print at the bottom of the bill with no explanation which said 'shop supply.' After questioning Midas about the charge they apologized saying that it was a computer error, offered a refund and gave me a certificate for a free oil change. I wouldn't be writing this if I hadn't read other reviews which suggest others have had similar experiences with Midas. I can only say Hilo is a small town and I for one hope for their own sake this isn't the course they've decided to follow. I have taken my 2003 Jeep Cherokee to this Midas 3 times now, but never again. The first time was for an oil change that I didn't have time to do myself. They did fine with that. The second time I went was to have them install a throttle position sensor I couldn't do myself due to lack of tools/experience on this part. The third time I took the Jeep in was yesterday. My Jeep had been having trouble starting, so I took it in for a diagnostic. They tested the battery and alternator for free, coming back saying I needed a new alternator and it would cost $500 to replace it! I walked out. On the way home I stopped by a parts store to price alternators. The price at NAPA, $190...even cheaper at Checker $180. So this morning I took off my alternator and took it to Checker to have it tested. Checker tech tested it twice, and it PASSED BOTH TIMES! The Checker tech suggested I check the batter cables for corrosion inside the cable and then check the starter if that didn't work. Came home, put the old alternator back on, replaced spark plugs, cleaned battery terminals and checked the cables. Guess what...the ground battery cable has some corrosion inside! So I didn't need a new alternator, just new battery cables. I called Midas this morning and talked to a manager, Sherry I think was her name. Told her my problem with their unethical and uninformed business style as politely as I could, and was totally brushed off. She said, "I don't do business that way. Maybe I need to have my alternator testing machine checked." She proceeded to ignore my concern for almost being ripped off for $500, and got me off the phone quickly. Don't go to this Midas unless all you need is an overpriced oil change you don't have time to do yourself. read more

Called and got an appointment for the next day for a transmission flush. Counter girl very friendly and nice,called me by name as soon as I walked in. I was told it would take about an hour. While I was there seen two people getting state inspections,Midas was very fast in getting that done and the customers seemed very pleased with their service. They have Wi Fi, television, comfortable chairs and free coffee while you wait. The bathroom wasn't too bad. The toilet and sink could use a cleaning with bleach,but floors,wall and trash can was clean. Ashleigh was so good with customers and being consistent with explaining time ,scheduling and servicing. Technician was also good with explaining maintenance scheduling to customer while I was there. I observed the tech explain about brake light bulbs saying there was five in there but only one needed to be replaced he gave customer the choice also offered a temp safety sticker that showed he was in process of repair till tires got replaced so he would not get cited. I was told it would take about one and a half hours to do the transmission flush and it was done in about two hours..not to far off time quote wise. Total price 171.84 and done fast friendly and nothing shady here. I will be back.. read more

100% BULLSH*T - AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Ok, here's my story. I just bought a used truck, went in for an alignment job, got quoted for around $125. I was ok with that. I came back from starbucks to a revised quote for (($3500!!!!)) to pretty much replace the entire front end of the truck. They told me both upper and lower balljoints, inner and outer tie rods, and wheel bearing hubs had to be replaced on both sides. If this were even true, any reputable mechanic would charge less than 1/3 of that for the job. Needless to say, I did not take them up on their offer. I went online and bought all those parts and paid $250 with shipping. When I actually took a look at the underside of the truck with a mechanic friend, it turned out the only thing that needed to be replaced was ONE LOWER BALLJOINT. That would be a $50 part and maybe another $50 to install at a shop. Another interesting fact is that a sway bar linkage was disconnected on one side of the truck. Funny how they missed that. Maybe they didn't even bother looking at the truck? What idiotic crooks. How they could ever expect anyone to pay that is beyond my understanding. read more

I came here after being recommended to this place by a few family members. I made my appointment about a week ago for a safety check. I went in for my appt today and was told that I needed to wait 45 mins. Safety checks DO NOT and SHOULD NOT take this long. But I needed to get it done. Anyways, I received a call from them and was told that my tint was too dark at 26%. I went back to the shop and told them that I know for a fact my tint was 38%. I also asked if they used the light meter. The mechanic sounded very unsure of himself and responded, "Umm yeah... But I can check again if you want." Either you stick by your word or not. I told him that I did not want to waste my time and would go elsewhere. Horrible service. I went to take my truck in to get an oil change and an expection on my muffler. I notified the front desk mechanic that there is a hole in a muffler which makes it loud he immediately said no there's no hole in my muffler before even looking at my truck so right from the start I felt a lot of hostility. They went about the oil change and when I returned to pick up my truck I started it up and noticed something felt different. About 5 minutes down the road leaving Midas I decided to pull over to check the engine when I opened the hood to my truck I right away so that the oil dipstick was sticking straight out I also checked the air filter and the screws were loose to the air filter with an oil change they normally will check the tire pressure and put the right amount of air into the tires so I grab my tire pressure pen to check the tire pressure on All 4 of my tires. Ome to find they were all unbalanced therefore what they told me and what they wrote on the receipt that they gave me after my service that my tires were 30 30 and 33 in the back was incorrect because they did not put any air into my tires I immediately called the manager back I talked to him directly over the phone he told me to return and he will service the truck I told him I will never return and I will tell my friends not to go to midas. He offered a free oil change in the future I told him no thank you and that I want him to know that this has happened under his supervision it was a basic oil change that I myself can do and these mechanics who were all dominantly men demeaned me while I was there and I feel I was purposefully targeted as well as my truck . Don't trust any mechanic for yourself you yourself need to do your own research and determine if they are correct or not. And there were multiple cracks in my muffler system by the way...midas mechanic Brandon was Wrong. read more

I took my truck into midas for a fuel pump related problem. I had to pay a $70 diagnostic fee for them to directly figure out what the problem was as to make sure not to waste time R&R a part that won't fix the truck obviously. They said they figured out the problem was my fuel pump and fuel filter as i suspected. So they went about R&R the fuel pump and fuel filter, calling me to let me know that my truck is ready to be picked up. So i am heading to midas to pick my truck up thinking everything is fixed on my truck as they said. After paying over $800 when everything is done, they give me my key and i hop in my truck and sure enough my truck is doing the exact same thing i brought it in for. Starts up then dies right after, which is what you would expect from a bad fuel pump not holding pressure. I go back in to say hey my truck is doing the exact same thing! whats going on? The manager and tech who worked on it were acting like they didn't know what happened? It was just running they said. so i take them both to my truck to show them, yes it is still doing the exact same thing. So at this point the tech pops my hood and starts spraying in my air filter to do a diagnostic to see if it is still the fuel pressure problem!! Mind you this is AFTER i paid for a diagnostic and paid for the labor and parts. That shows right there that the tech who worked on my truck obviously didn't bother to diagnose the truck to make sure it was the fuel pump. They took my truck back in to see what the problem was and figured out that i need a new alternator because its not supplying enough power to the fuel pump. So they R&R my altornator for $123 and the way the manager tries to make it up to me is not charging me for the alternator, but i still have to pay the $800 for the job that they did not do correctly or like professionals. I took my truck there today because i noticed a fuel leak from my gas tank around my fuel pump area so i called them up and talked to the manager by the name of Shawn Lucas who told me he would fix the fuel leak free of charge because of the mistakes they did. I show up and he already gives me a cold shoulder with no acknowledgment. He just hands me a paper and tells me i have to sign this in order for them to work on my truck, when we just talked on the phone and he already told me they would do it, never once told me about signing anything. I already knew this was shady so i told him i wasn't going to sign the paper. He than had the nerve to ask me why i am so frustrated and on edge. i explained to him that I've spent almost one grand on a problem that is still not fixed. He wanted to start talking outside so the customers inside wouldn't hear us. As the manager opened to door he made a motion like he was going to slam the door in my face. That was literally the last straw for me so i called him out on it and called him and his business very unprofessional. I could tell he didn't like the sound of that because he got in my face and tried to provoke me to fight with him.
