My wife brought our nearly one-year-old dog in today for a routine spay procedure. A couple hours after she was dropped off, we received a call informing us that, prior to surgery, our dog had been administered the wrong medication and dosage through an IV -- specifically 1 ml of bupivacaine instead of being held for splash block prior to spay. According to the report we later received, the error was serious enough that ASPCA Poison Control had to be contacted to monitor the situation due to the potential for complications including bradycardia, hypotension, tremors, seizures, and methemoglobinemia. Symptoms would have developed within 30-60 min. and there is a medium risk that those signs would be serious or life-threatening. Thankfully our dog had no clinical signs present but our family has trusted and used Chase Veterinary Clinic for many years, which makes this situation even more upsetting. While we are grateful our dog was being monitored and the correct steps were taken to ensure her wellbeing, this incident has completely broken our trust and confidence in Chase. We understand that accidents happen in the vet medical community however as a result, we will no longer be using their services moving forward.

Chase Vet is an amazing clinic. They do genuinely care about your pet, and I find the people that complain the most as far as clients always tend to be the most difficult ones to deal with as well. (This goes for ANYWHERE; not just medicine!) Anytime I've needed my pet seen, if they were not able to get me in they offered resources for local urgent cares. This field is incredibly short staffed right now so I appreciate all that they do for my fur babies; even if they can't get me in they never leave me hanging and point me in the right direction. I feel like a lot of people have unreasonable expectations as far as what Vet hospitals can and can't do. They deserve kindness, respect and patience. Hell I don't get a call back from my Human Dr concerning lab results, or inquiries for WEEKS. Sometimes I don't get calls back immediately from Chase but it's still within a reasonable time frame considering the struggles Vetmed is dealing with: Thank you for all that you do Chase! Don't let these miserable grumps in the reviews deter you from this place.

    Doctor Bonnie's Pet House Calls

Losing a pet is one of the hardest things I've had to go through, but Dr. Bonnie somehow made it…read moreeven more unbearable. The complete lack of bedside manner was inescapable as Dr. Bonnie proceeded to make jokes about the situation, and how she "gets a kick" out of the different reactions dogs have to anesthesia, despite my sobs and pleas as I held my dying dog. After Dr. Bonnie entered my home, she immediately gave my dog an injection of anesthesia without any warning. We didn't even have time to sneak her a quick piece of chocolate or ask what the process was going to look like. Soon, my dog was sleeping peacefully from the anesthesia and instead of calmly proceeding with the euthanasia, Dr. Bonnie decided to move my dog over to get her in a more convenient spot, and in turn, my dog woke up in complete terror. Dr. Bonnie then let my dog stay in a confused, panicked state, looking around silently begging for someone to help her for what felt like the longest 10 minutes of my life, while Dr. Bonnie continued her jokes and endless one-sided chatter, telling me my dog is probably going to "retch". Dr. Bonnie finally stepped in after watching me, my family, and my dog suffer, and gave her the IV to put her to rest. Of course she only stepped in after I begged and sobbed asking her to do something because I couldn't watch anymore. My poor dog should've been met with calm mannerisms and peaceful loving as she passed, but instead was met with loud, inappropriate chatter and complete chaos. Once she had passed, I tried to get some paw and nose print impressions, while trying to keep my dog's dignity. I tried bringing the ink pad to my dog's nose, while not disturbing her, but Dr. Bonnie was pressuring us to putting the paper on the ground and pick up the dogs head to physically push her limp head into the paper. How incredibly horrifying. We then carried her out to Dr. Bonnie's van, just to have to put her in the trunk on top of a bunch of items she left in there. A flat surface or maybe a blanket would've been nice. Bare minimum even? I am incredibly horrified by the number of positive reviews for Dr. Bonnie and cannot fathom the lack of compassion and gentle care that we received during this devastating time. What we thought was going to be a sad yet peaceful and dignified goodbye became a complete nightmare that I will never forget. I anticipated the sadness and longing that follows this situation, but could never have predicted the sheer terror that I feel every single time a memory of that moment pops into my head. We chose in-home euthanasia to prevent any suffering for my dog and to allow a comfortable environment for her, as well as my family, to say goodbye. Instead, we will all suffer with this memory for the rest of our lives. I will never forgive myself for letting Dr. Bonnie be responsible for my dog's care.
