Sometimes I get sick of things and need to go away. I can do this any number of places but this time I wanted to look for that long-sought-after edge of the world. And having just watched one of the greatest movies ever made, The Misfits, I was in a Nevada desert state of mind. But instead of heading north out of Reno toward Black Rock I decided that even with the metroburners gone that place has been a bit overdone of late. Give it a rest, willya? This and other thoughts remind me of a time when I worked with a desert-rat rancher in the Mojave, a guy who I thought was surely one of the last of a dying breed. Strapped on a six-shooter when he left the house, but that was only because, as he liked to say, he never passed up a chance to shoot a rattlesnake. You don't do well in a place like that if you're not basically a good person. So I digress, but on this particular day heading nowhere in particular except to see if I could find the end of the road, here I found the Middlegate Station. The sign says it's in the middle of nowhere but it's not exactly that. But if you're looking to stay somewhere quite near the middle, the motel here is a good jumping off spot. Otherwise bring your camper, or be prepared to drive a LONG way back to where you came from. The people here are like others I've met in faraway places - which is about as nice as people get because they know you did a long drive to get to their door. Food and drink are just fine, and really you aren't in much of a hurry to get going after all. read more

Retired State Trooper who drove by this place a hundred times over the years while working. Never stopped! After I retired my wife and I stopped in for the night with our 5th wheel, to tired to go on. Came in for a burger and a beer. We stayed way to long because we were having to much fun. Now we just hook up our trailer and drive out for the night. Always fun and always friendly. Never judge a book by it's cover! Love the old saloon vibe. Drove a LONG way expecting much but little would have sufficed. Decided NOT to get the $19.95 1.3lb burger and just get a double burger and a pastrami sandwich. The double hamburder was 2 FROZEN GRAY PATTIES, that looked like mush...and the pastrami was just a couple slices of meat and with hard ends at that. SO DISAPPOINTED and do not think we will bring guests to this famous tourist attraction. SO sad and wish that for what little they do, that a hand-formed burger would be the LEAST they could do for their reputation. Nobody greeted us and we had to ask for help 10 minutes later, then when we wanted to pay, we went to the bar after nobody checked back on us and our waitress was busy for 15 minutes with another couple of men at the bar before we asked the cook if she could please find someone to check is out. Came here w a group to grab a burger, a bit of a drive from Fallon but there is some cool history at this little spot. I'd give them a call in advance to confirm they are open and if you're going in a big group to help them out so you're not waiting forever for food. But the scene is super cool, old school country bar and restaurant. Prices are fare and the waitress is a firecracker so bring your wit! You can also do the monster challenge which is pretty intense, I haven't done it personally, but I've seen it attempted and failed 6 of 6 times. So if you have some time and want to experience and experience check this place out. Side note, they have a hotel attached as well, so if you feel like being cheeky you should stay, there's rumor that one of the rooms is haunted :) read more

Holy moly, this place has great food! The burgers are out of this world and extremely tasty! Old boy cooked the hell out of that wester burger. Came with a group and two out of nine of us completed the Middlegate Monster Burger Challenge!!!! Crazy because it was larger than I thought it would be but not surprised at the same time because it was that marvelous! Small town but big on food and history, super glad I got to stop by. The architecture was something out of a wild Wild West movie. Lots of decorative dollar bills on the ceiling. This joint is one of a kind! read more

WE LOVE THIS PLACE!!! We will even drive the two hundred or whatever miles from Minden just to enjoy one of their luscious burgers, onion rings, and a Fat Tire beer ... just for the sheer fun of it. We've seen and met so many interesting people, watched so many quirky vignettes of human interaction, and enjoyed the friendly hospitality of the people who work here. It's awesome. And just to show you just how awesome it is: on June 13th, we spent a long and arduous day doing radio support for the Pony Express Re-Ride along Highway 50. We finished somewhere around 9 p.m. and were hungry, tired, and had been looking forward to a burger at Middlegate all day. By the time we got there, we wondered if it was still open for food. Walking in the door, I heard the sizzle of hamburger cooking on the grill. "Oh good, you're still cooking," I said. The cook smiled, but the other women said, "Well, we are trying to close the kitchen, but make yourselves at home," sweeping her hand toward the tables. Our friends arrived just minutes later and joined us at the table. Soon our drinks arrived, and minutes later, the most sumptuous repast was laid in front of us. THANK YOU, LADIES. Read and heard about their famous burger. Even the front desk at a motel in Austin NV said to eat here instead of in Austin! I didn't get the Monster Burger, but got the mushroom Swiss. Now that was a super-delicious burger. Probably the best one I've ever had. Thanks to the waitress/cook/bartender who was very nice and appreciative. I should have given here a bigger tip. We always order the same thing, the Monster Burger and a side of onion rings! There are three of us and we are all healthy eaters. The monster burger split 3 ways fills us up. This place is full of history and just has that special vibe. Don't expect some modern building, this is the real deal rustic wood beam building! The staff has always been friendly and just good folks. I had read a review from another person that claimed there was a racist article in the women's restroom. Since we were there I peeped in to see for myself. I couldn't believe it, it was nothing more than an old newspaper and a piece of genuine history. I found absolutely nothing offensive about it what so ever so don't be fooled. People from all over the world have stopped in this place. If you haven't been here then I would highly recommend it. This is the coolest little place,,, in the middle of bum fudge nowhere :) I had some time & decided to take a mini road trip from Fallon. Definitely not sorry I did! To be honest, the place looks a little scary, lol, & being alone, I don't think I would have stopped if I hadn't researched it first :D Other than being a historical site (a stop for the pony express!), they where also featured on Man vs Food for their monster burger challenge. I didn't have the guts to even try it... I get full off a Happy Meal, so I know my limitations, lol! Nevertheless, I did have a burger. It was good, & still too big for me :) If you are on the fence about driving this far for a burger then I suggest making a 1/2 day of it to visit other things along the way. The drive is pretty & if you are coming from Fallon you can stop at Sand Mountain (for pictures only if you don't have the right kind of vehicle) & maybe take a hike at Grimes Point Archaeological Trail to walk off that burger. If you are using your GPS to find the location I would suggest entering the crossroads instead of the address, it seems to be more accurate that way. read more

Who doesn't love a great burger in the middle of nowhere. This place is fun and funky. Its a couple hours east of Reno and it caters to the off road, rancher, hunter, on the way to somewhere crowd. Great dive bar vibe and their food is actually good. I always try to stop here when going by. read more

Middlegate Station, home of the Middlegate Monster. "What is the Middlegate Monster?" you might ask. Two juicy, 2/3 pound maybe 3/4 pound beef patties Three slices of cheddar cheese Three slices of jack cheese Three ultra thick, dense slices of sour dough bread, buttered to perfection with a homemade special sauce Small mountain of onions, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and one peppercini. The burger is easily eight or nine inches tall. Eat the whole thing with an order of fries and win the "I ate the Middlegate Monster" t-shirt. The place is in the middle of nowhere, and if you're driving on the 50 east past Reno headed to, well... I don't even know where, if you blink you might miss the place. Whether or not you choose to take on The Monster, it's worth the stop. The homemade pie looked awesome, but I didn't have room for it following the Monster. I rode my bike there from Fallon and passed Sand Mountain, a burned down brothel, a couple miles of highway with continuous messages written in rocks on both sides of the 50, a Navy bombing range, and a few dust devils amidst the beautiful scenery of the Dixie Valley. A memorable ride for sure. If find yourself in the northern Nevada area around Reno or Fallon and you idolize Man versus Food or if your inner competitive eating champion is ready to flex its guns, make a trip to take on The Monster. Bring some friends with you, and see who can Hoover it the fastest. Conan the Barbarian says, "Crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentations of their women.." after conquering this behemoth burger. Mr. Universe doesn't lie. At the end of the day, the cool points for this place are through the roof. Unique rustic diner setup, friendly service, family atmosphere, good prices, home style food and a food challenge that separates the men from the boys and sissy la-la's. I drive past here many times. I have only stopped a couple times. I didn't enjoy my burger and I needed gas but there were a lot of motorcycles parked right in front of the gas pump. I am surprised no one told them to park somewhere else. There aren't a lot of places for food or gas around there. Make sure to stop in Fallon. read more

This was literally in the middle of nowhere. So I thought it looked neat and decided to see if they had food. It was amazing!!! Then I learned this was the Resturant from the movie top gun. The actual Top Gun flight school is down the road and all the military patches are so neat to see. I had a flat on my trailer and the owner helped me change it out. Please stop and check it out. This is a great spot in the middle of nowhere especially if you're looking to make a day trip from either the Fernley (1hr 15 mins) or Fallon (43 mins) hitching posts. They have some historical roots being a Pony Express Stop and have a nice plaque outside the building telling the story. Also they serve food, booze and gas (not in any particular order). Very nice folks "minding the shop" but healthy-minded diners beware, this is not the healthiest place to eat. I didn't want to be hurting or feeling guilty so I didn't partake in any of their menu offerings (thank goodness I brought my own food!), I mean Monster Burger kinda says it all but if you're feeling like it's time to be naughty then let your freak flag fly! My husband used to frequent there, but upon hearing the terrible experience my gay friends just had. I will never make the trip out there. This is 2018, and if you can't accept customers for what they are ....CUSTOMERS! You should be ashamed of yourselves. I have plenty of family that have gone there too and not had a great experience. Well, this visit was a fail. Maybe they had a bad day. Unfortunately we stopped and experienced what we hope is an abnormal experience. We stopped at about 3:40 on a Sunday. When we walked in there was a group of eight, a couple and four other individuals seated. There were not any clean tables to sit at so we sat at the bar. There were four people working - 2 cooking, 1 counting coin and another who was asked to wipe the tables down. And numerous flies all around us, a very full fly tape and other fly traps hanging above the bar - so nasty. We were not asked for our order so asked if we could order. We waited for our food for 35 minutes. In the mean time two other tables were served the wrong foods and were unhappy with the wait. The response was 'it wasn't my fault'. Later when the young man delivered the correct order he apologized but the woman who cooked wouldn't. The woman helping cook wasn't wearing gloves but the young man was. And to his credit he appeared to put new gloves on each time he interacted with people. People not working the restaurant came behind the bar to ask for money and get beer. Another person came into work and put fly swatters on the bar next to us saying they help keep the flys away. When we got the burger they were not great. The fries they put in the basket were funny because one basket had about 10 fries and the other had a normal amount. With the amount of flies and the experience I checked for flies in my food and while I didn't see any, it was just too disgusting of an experience to want to eat more. They did apologize to us for the wait as we dashed out with our food. But it wasn't enough to save the experience and should warrant a visit from the health department. We should have left as soon as we walked in but we had been on the road for quite awhile and heard the burgers were great. Sadly not today. read more

I make this place a regular stop on my travels across Highway 50 and have always been treated well and have one of the best burgers anywhere. The place is pretty unique being in the middle of nowhere but offers camping and even some cheap cabins to stay in (I haven't tried them). The folks inside have always been very pleasant.
