This is to ensure you don't injure yourself/others. I'd say the overall level of play is mid to low B-C level, with almost everyone having played at least HS hockey. I used to play in the New England Senior Hockey League, but I enjoy this league much more because of the re-draft before every season, less goonery (but just enough chipiness allowed), better gametimes, and consistent rinks (as opposed to driving all over Eastern Mass). The admins who run the league are great guys as well and very responsive if you have any questions. The league Web site with updated stats and standings is also a nice plus. If you've tried various beer leagues and are not happy, check out this league because it's run by hockey players for hockey players.

Its comparably priced for an adult hockey league. Plus you save since jerseys are provided. The guys who run the league are accomidating to individuals constraints, such as scheduling. The administrators offer ways to lower the cost of the league, such as scorekeeping. Its a fun league to play in, without any worry of fights breaking out (a strict no fighting policy). It is the best adult hockey league I have played in yet.

I am always quick to applaud the city and surrounding towns (way to go Cambridge and Somerville) for the wealth of outdoor activities, both solo and team-related, available to residents. One of my favorite such Boston-based young-people-centric outdoor activities is my weekly WAKA game at Roberto Clemente Field in the Fens. My team, the Electric Mayhem, has been together for years in the Ironsides League (there are several leagues in town), and through it I have met some of the nicest and most fun folks you can hope for. If anyone ever thinks that it's hard to make new friends, sign up for a WAKA team and you'll have a dozen new ones after a day. The Ironsides League (and I hear the same about the other ones) is just competitive enough to be fun. Teams have a vested interest in winning and playing hard, but not so much of an interest that folks get disgusted and enraged after a loss. Everyone's there to just play and have a good time. The leagues are all well-managed and that management leads to the quality of organization and general spirit of WAKA in Boston. So yeah, in short, get some comfy sneakers on and get to the field. It's game time.

You don't know any one and you find yourself getting excited to do laundry on the weekends just to pass time and loneliness. Ok, I admit, that's slightly dramatic and maybe a bit true. I joined WAKA when my childhood friend moved into the city so she could meet people outside her grad school program. After trying another kickball league, I just didn't want to enroll in a free agent alone. The concept of adult kickball leagues is pretty standard, you play a game of kickball and then you head to a bar to drink. At a previous league, everyone hangs out only with their team mates and hardly any mingling happens between teams. It's quite the opposite with WAKA and I could give credit to the company but the people make the difference. If you're not a person that likes high energy or loud bars, you're best off never joining this league. You really have to be prepare for happy, excited and really fun people. Yes the teams can be very competitive on the field but you may also make friends for a lifetime. It's cheesy, but I've found it to be truth in the making.

They have teams and players from novice to advanced levels of play, A, B, C and D divisions, with A being the most competitive. All games are umpired. I had the pleasure of winning two titles in three years, we won in the fall 2005 D Division and fall 2006 C division. This fall our team, The Angry Pandas, is taking a shot at the A division. In addition to the least flowy acronym, Boston West has the most overpriced, imbalanced and poorly managed leagues of the three. The league price is incredibly expensive and completely non-inclusive. No equipment, no ump fees, no T-shirts, no shit. Fine, I guess, if you still have that clay-tinted Pirates uni from the company softball tourney three years back, but not if you're signing up for a casual league and a good time. Speaking of no. No fun! When our captain registered us, he explicitly explained that most of the team had never played before and that we were looking for the least competitive division. The "commish" suggested the Sunday league, which, as luck would have it, is not tiered at all. We ended up being pitted against squads ranging from silent but deadly diamond demons to all-stars from the MA Women's Penal League. Couple these glowing traits with the broad application of Boston's city limits (some games played in Waltham and Hyde Park) and more than few late cancellations, and you've got a season worth forgetting. Only I can't forget. It was pretty bad.

The gym floor is used recreationally throughout the day by elementary school children for their gym class. Each side of the court has completely different rims (one is double rimmed and one is not)....the floor is also completely warn and don't allow for quick stop and go play....this gym simply benefits the team that hits the most jump shots. It's equally as hard to drive as it is to defend against it; again, because of how slippery the floor is. Post game write ups and stats are inconsistent, inaccurate, and often times delayed for all leagues but the top one. Don't expect anything impressive/on time. Post season play is rushed to allow time for the upcoming spring/summer session. This resulted in almost non existent updates for existing leagues. In terms of timing of games...playoffs were planned on an adhoc, on the go basis to accommodate those who run the league. This league is not worth the money unless you are in the most competitive league. The guys who run this league clearly don't consider the fact that we all pay the same amount to be a part of the CACbasketball league and expect to be treated like it. My advice for anyone who chooses to play in this league -Go in with low expectations and understand going into it that you are overpaying for an under delivered service offering.

I LOVE BOSTON DERBY DAMES!!…read more I've been following this crew since way back when they had their exhibition bout in Providence on that sweet-ass outdoor track and we were all like freezing our asses off and catching skates in our teeth on the front row. Then they moved up to the gym at MassArt - Sold. It. Out. and STILL had a huuuuuge line around the block. That was freakin awesome. I am still sad that "Bone Saw" cut her derby career short. She was kickass. (She just quit. Nothing tragic happened. That I know of.) The Nutcrackers are my girls (with a special place in my heart for a select few from the Cosmonaughties - Easy Bake Shovin' and Violet Rage). But my main girl has got to be Malicen Thunderland. Girl skates with HEART! You are guaranteed an awesome time at these bouts. Go! Support this local sports juggernaut while you can still afford their tickets! Player-owned and operated! These are no princesses and prima donnas. They get down and dirty. They're not afraid to fall on their asses. The bands are sometimes fun, too. And they have good raffles.
