Came here for dinner and drinks with friends. Was close to empty when I arrived at 7:30 on a Saturday night, but by the time we left it was packed. It's a wine bar, and their selection of wines is extensive. I'm no wine expert, but our server was helpful in providing direction and context when I asked for their opinion. I ended up with a skin-contact glass from the Niagara area which wasn't too out there while still having its own unique flair. The food was great- they'd just started their autumn menu. We ordered the eggplant, fries, potato dumplings, and blood sausage. They're built as sharing plates, but I was surprised at the amount of food we got, which was above average for this kind of fare. That's reflected in the prices though- expect to pay about $17 per plate. It perhaps felt like we were hurried out at the end of our stay, but even then the experience was great overall. Imagine walking into a dimly lit room fully of loud chatter on a cold Saturday night. Bottles and bottles of wine lined an entire wall to your left, what looks like bookshelves full of more empty bottles of wine are at the back and menus w more wine choices are scribbled on chalk boards all over the place. I felt like a cozy den, but a den full of old and new world wines..... and I liked it. The seats along the benches on the left were mainly for pairs and there were small tables for groups of four or more gathered in the middle. That's what I remember from Mildfield wine bar. Wine. Surprisingly, their selection of wines was not robust. I guess I'm more of a Bordeaux girl, so I was slightly disappointed that they didn't have it listed on their menu. It was fun reading their descriptions and trying different wines. After trying a few glasses of their Greek, Spanish, Italian and French reds and still(!!) unable to find one that I really liked, I spoke w our server. She came back w a bottle of bordeaux from off the menu and we knew we had a winner. I guess I know what I like and tend to stick with it! Needless to say, after a couple glasses, we asked for the bottle and got the last one. Woohoooo. Food. Prior to coming here, I was actually looking forward to trying their Duck Heart Tartare. The warm brioche that came w the Tartare was amazing and the duck heart was Deliciousss as well. Tasted like steak tartare but w stronger flavours. Wasn't too chewy (like chicken heart could be) and wasn't gamey. I liked it. Cheese and charcuterie was good as well. Choose your own based on their list on the chalkboard. I liked the Sauvagine and Finocchiona. :D Anyway, my review for this place is that our server was pretty nice and accommodating. The place is a bit loud because it was kind of crowded, but its probably the same anywhere on a Saturday night. Selection of wines was okay. Not a lot of vintages. Food was tasty but menu is small. I think this might be one of my favourite wine bars! It was a Wednesday night so it wasn't busy - which I loved! In the city's west end is a small cozy wine bar, with about 8-10 tables and a large table for chef tastings. There was a nice selection of wines from all over the world. It wasn't you're typical French or Italian wine. I enjoyed that, we got to try out different wines from all over the world. After a few glasses of wine, we started to feel peckish so we ordered thyme fries - which were perfect. Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, not too oily or greasy. BOTTOM LINE: The staff's mathematical deficits and sense of entitlement for tips soured an otherwise fun night. I considered whether rating them a 1-star was too harsh given how well everything else went, but I really can't see myself coming back. After ordering dinner and 2 bottles of wine, my DCs and I settled the bill and left the customary 15% tip. To our surprise, the manager confronted us on our "meager" tip without even asking us about how our night was or if we were dissatisfied with anything. Turns out, the manager felt entitled that tips should be based on AFTER-tax cost even though HST is, obviously, not part of any service or product they provide. Ridiculous, entitled and poor form. Super friendly staff - they are tight like a family it seems.. Fun place less expensive than many on dundas west. Fancy enough yet still slightly grungy. We had only wine and apps. The Camas syrah was a fair drink, typical syrah and at $40 or so a bottle only moderately overpriced ;) The apps were fun. Cauliflower, frites and arepas. Half pinchos half tapas I'd call it. The mains look amazing but we had already eaten so we could not partake. Lovely decent sized patio combined with a Brooklyn like half gentrified interior make for a lovely ambiance. They could fit parties of 10 but book ahead the place seats at max 40 inside probably fewer and maybe 25 or so outside. You will enjoy this spot I suspect. Worth the trip west! I'm sad to say that is another wine bar that I'll only go to for the wine. As a vegetarian I'm really not impressed with the new menu. I will not eat a tomato for $16, heirloom or not nor a lettuce sandwich with cured egg. Besides fries, which I am very tired of, there are only two vegetarian options, the tomato or lettuce sandwich. I found myself leaving disappointed with what was an otherwise ok place. I am a huge fan of gourmet pubs in Toronto like the Queen and Beaver and House on Parliament, who have locked down the balance between refined and casual, and pricing that gives you great, unique food that is worth all the money. It is a treat to go to places like that. I think this wine bar was trying to be that, but wasn't quite. It left an uncomfortable gap between what the place was supposed to be and what we actually got. The food items are good, and presented on pretty plates, but portions are small, and leave a gap in your belly. Pan Seared Flat Iron Steak was done well--tender and good flavour. You just might be left hungry after eating the few slices. It's priced to make you wonder about ordering another: $15. Apps seem affordable, but there were so many burnt, charred unusable pieces of the toast that came with the cheese plate that was meant to DIY your own hors d'oeuvres type thing. My fingers actually turned black fishing around for the few edible pieces of bread and my tongue numbed to the monotonous tartness of the one variety of aged cheese offered on the cheese plate. Who knows, maybe it was the end of the night and supplies were low. This just doesn't happen at a place with gourmet fare. Another reviewer wrote that the manager actually confronted his/her group about expecting a larger tip--at least 15% after tax, instead of 15% before tax. There was nothing ostensible or class-less like that in our case, but there was a sense of...being side-eyed when the pre-tax 15% wasn't what was expected. Restaurants need to start building in service fees or, they need to pay their staff more. So stressful, everyone leaves feeling badly. As well, our group had a common bill and when it was my turn, the waitress asked me about my stuff, I told her exactly what my portion was with tax, then, she inexplicably rounded it up. Why? Dunno. Maybe this establishment has self-styled itself on being slightly higher end and expects people to catch on to that. A successful manifestation of this wouldn't be so...fraught. Great atmosphere, crowd, and wine. I've been twice - the first time we didn't get wine, the second time with three friends and we partook in the enjoyment and exploration of the wine list. The guy who was serving was really nice and helpful. He let my friend taste some she wasn't sure about so she could find one that was right for her. I had two whites and both were wins. The crowd was great - mature, conversational, everyone having a good time but notsuper loud and infringing on the good times of others. You could dress up a bit to go there, but you also wouldn't feel weird if you were wearing jeans. The wine is $8+ a glass, but it is def a wine bar. They have some nibbles, but they're more just a small snack allowing you to refocus on the wine. A great place to go on a date or with friends. I would definitely go again! read more

Good food, good wine, good people. For both food and drink, the menu is listed on chalkboards. I appreciate this because the menu changes regularly and you know what you are getting is fresh. VIBE We took a bet to see what the bar was previously: my wine companion won because it used to be a Portuguese sports bar. You can kind of tell because the floors haven't been changed. And yeah, it's a bit dark and dim in here but I kind of like the non-chalance about it. I also like the display of the wine bottles in cages and the chalk boards everywhere. We were lucky to be at the back and have one of the chalkboards in front of us but I'd suggest to have menus because it's hard (and somewhat awkward) to be looking at the top of the room for your wine. The owners are on it and are very friendly and cool. They also know their stuff. At around 9:30-10 on a Saturday night, it wasn't terribly busy. Then a group of a few people who were having birthday parties and the hovering over our table for our two chairs started. It was a bit annoying and we're lucky we got there when it wasn't busy. But when it was, it was a buzzy, fun vibe. That said, people were in their own groups. This doesn't seem like a place where you can talk to your neighbour. WE DRANK There are no flights here (which I really hope they incorporate in the future) but the glasses are very generous and range from $11 to $14. We were offered to split our glasses. First up was The Beajoulis Villages 2008/Domaines des Nuglies ($11). I liked the smoothness of it. Wine partner felt it wasn't punchy enough. The Tempranillo Monastrell Red 2008 ($11) from Bilogia, Valencia offered that robust flavour punch we were looking for. It was sassy! I highly recommend. OBLIGATORY CATCHY REMARK I am really digging this stretch of Dundas West (you have This End Up, The Federal Reserve and the Midfield all pretty much beside each other). I would come here on a quieter night like a Thursday if you don't want to feel boxed in. Almost a full goal! If you want "frou frou" and "ambiance," go to Cocktail Bar or Crush. As per my previous review of Ufficio, I was incredibly unfamiliar with Dundas W. but after a suggestion of meeting up at Mayfield prior to our reservation, I was more than willing to check this new spot out -- especially after reading all the pleasant reviews. It was a Wednesday at 6pm and this place was pretty quiet so grabbed a table by the window to do the infamous drink and people watch. I cannot comment on the food portion of the menu but the wine selection was rather extensive -- and much more unique to other places in the city. The fact that they had half of a page of rosé options blew my mind! The 2 girls in this place were so delightful and knew what they were talking about! They provided me 2 rosé options that I adored and a sparkling wine that was fantastic. This is a smaller place with a tiny patio and I suspect on the weekends, this place must fill up pretty quickly. But, this place will remain on my "return to" list! read more

This establishment has my full attention. Wine bar and close to home? Check and check! I love wine. I love the snobbiness of wine. I also like cheese and wine. Midfield wins on all fronts. The owners are delightful, knowledgeable and interested in pleasing you as the customer. They serve many wines by the glass and they will let you taste a number on your way to finding the right glass. Crowd is not the roaring Ossington bunch but a more mature, conversational bunch. The warm wood tones of the small but cozy main room feels European and timeless. It can get loud when packed but never loses the feel of being an intimate space where you can hear your friends. Food is something they're still working on it seems. When they first opened there was the rumour they were looking for the right chef. Whether or not that's the case, they've always offered delicious cheese / charcuterie plates and sometimes oysters on the half shell as well. Which is generally more than enough for me. If I'm going for dinner, I choose somewhere with a larger offering but I don't mind if the MIdfield never expands their food menu. I think it's just about perfect as is. Great for a first date, business meeting, group of friends/colleagues, parents... I'v been twice now. The first time was a great experiences. Two of us shared a bottle of red. Our server offered a sample of the wine before committing to the bottle. The wine was good. I liked the large selection available and our server seemed to be knowledgable. Very chill environment when it's not busy. Last night's visit was ok. My friend ordered an app, fried cauliflower dish which was very tasty. Three of us each had various glasses of wine. One thing I MUST note is that they FREE POUR their wine, and that's fine when it's done properly but there was a very obvious difference in quantity when comparing the same type of wines. By the glass it's pretty pricey so I do expect a fair quantity. So that was very disappointing. read more

I came here on the Sunday night of the long weekend and it was relatively busy. It's extremely dim upon entering, which gave the place a really intimate feel. We sat on the patio, which was pretty spacious given the size of the place. We went solely for some drinks, and ordered a bottle of wine. I couldn't believe how knowledgeable the staff was about the wine. I was so impressed at the level of the detail in their ability to distinguish between the different kinds. We ended up ordering a white wine - the 2016 Am Berg, Bernhard Ott - which was recommended to us. It exceeded all of our expectations. It was refreshing and in some ways, comparable to a Riesling. Came here on a whim on the way to the airport for a quick bite of brunch on the way out of town. My friend and I were originally destined for The Federal, but their outrageously long line sent us right next door to Midfield. Food was very good - my friend had the poached spicy eggs and I had the butternut squash frittata. Both were delicious and worthy of dipping our toasted bread into the sauces. The potato waffle was also a nice touch! Service was attentive and some of the best I've had for a brunch service. This place just makes me feel so...content. Maybe its all the beautiful and interesting wines they offer (and the dreamy haze they put me in), or maybe its the beautiful and interesting company I find myself sharing a table with. Or its the cheeseboard. Or its the pretty little patio. Or its the candle light. Or its the very knowledgable but very unpretentious service. Actually, its all lovely. And so is the food. I loved their old menu, which was about 2-3 pages of smaller and larger plates. The new one is much tighter at only a single page and in a whole new culinary style, more English in origin from what the server told us. This new menu is also very good but be warned the portions are small so if you are looking to satisfy a big hunger you will need to order a number of items. There is also not a lot in the way of vegetarian options. I had, as mentioned, some beautiful cheese, some bread, and the grilled romaine salad (insanely good by the way), and was fine for me in terms of amount of food, but I had been snacking in the park beforehand and wasn't starving. Some people will say its pricey but the food is quite elevated, and the markups on the wine are actually very reasonable considering where they are buying them from - lots of smaller more specialized wineries, for example. read more

Great date night spot! The atmosphere is warm, dark and cozy. The food was delicious. We ordered a smoked fish (forget which fish but a fish nonetheless) crustini which was delicious. I definitely recommend the vegetarian Shepard's pie - it was super tasty, creative and unlike anything else I've tasted! Fish and chips was good (thick homemade fries) but you're better off ordering something unique. Service was great. Friendly. Wine list was extensive. Went there last night. Small little place but nice ambience.... the lighting is very dim and they play a nice mix of various songs (Cyprus hill song was fun to listen too). They have candles on tables to make it more romantic. Wine list: a various array of wines by glass (average $8-13) to bottles $50++++ Food: price wise I would say reasonable. The taste was great. The cauliflower was delicious. I had the steak and it was delicious with right seer ($12). Fries were nice too ($7). Reading the good reviews was difficult to square with my experience tonight. We came in and were ushered out because it was at capacity. We came back later when it had thinned out. The bartender/proprietor was obviously dismissive. We sat an inordinately long time before being served. The pour of scotch was shockingly small. We were both made to feel tangibly unwelcome. The bartender had time to have a cigarette outside before returning to the bar, but did not confirm the enquiry about the kitchen. Eventually someone came to ask if we wanted to be served. In short, a bummer experience at a place we had hoped would be a highlight, but proved to be a complete downer. Never again. read more

Came here for brunch so I can't speak to the wine and dinner service. But I've never been more disappointed. I am not picky and i always give generous and genuine reviews, so be forewarned. this is harsh. It ruined the rest of my Sunday morning. The coffee was 9$ for a French press worth 2 cups of coffee. It was so so so weak and watery, no flavour. And it came to the table room temperature. Disgusting. Couldn't drink it. And then the meal was a tiny little portion, like 4 potato cubes and 3 lettuce leaves, and the pork belly was pure fat. Literally pure fat. Not a single speck of actual pork meat, and i know pork belly is usually a lot of fat but this was beyond. I didn't eat it at all, I actually couldn't. And a 1inchx1inch square of toast. None of the flavours stood out. Will never return. read more

I guess my first question to the people of Midfield is: what are you trying to sell me? Because I'm not buying it. My friend and I were very excited to try a new place. We both love wine so the prospect of adding another place to the rotation was exciting. Look, I'm not a snob. I ate at Mexitacos beforehand so it was not like I was expecting some highballer evening. That being said...Midfield really disappointed and fell short on the decor and ambience department. Which is a shame because the wine is great and the people who run it seem nice enough. Personally, I think going to have a drink should be an experience (see Cocktail Bar). I mean this is wine afterall. And when you open a place, you have the responsibility to your customers to tick all those boxes: service, decor, and food/drink. Otherwise, don't bother. There are some nice elements like the wine cabinet at the back and the wine shelves at the bar. And then it gets confusing. It doesn't seem like the owners hired/consulted anybody for design. Were those tables inherited from the previous owners because they don't make sense. The light fixtures are nice and would provide warmth if it were not for the bright traffic lights streaming in through the massive BARRED windows! I could not tell you how distracting it was to keep looking at my friend's bar shadowed face. Ok, I get that we're on busy Dundas...but do I really need to feel like I'm in the middle of it? It is anything but warm here...which is what I wanted and expected. And be prepared to get up and walk around or crane your neck. Wine lists are posted in 2 different corners of the room and along a column in the middle. Pricepoints are pretty standard around $9, $12, and $14 a glass. A nice thing is how everything is available by the glass so if there's something you're really interested in, you don't have to buy a bottle before you try it. My friend had a beautiful Reisling from New Zealand and I had the spicy Verduno. To be fair, if it were only based on the wine, I'd probably give it 4 stars but as I mentioned before, this experience falls short as a whole. And actually that pisses me off because I really wanted to like it. I don't doubt that Midfield will do well. Because it does have really lovely wine and maybe that's all that matters. For me, if I'm to shell out $14 a glass, I expect more. So I guess I'll keep looking for some other cozy place to drink my wine. read more

So this is the 3rd time I've been to Midfield and this one is worth writing a review about unfortunately. We were a polite group of 12 close to 40 somethings coupled up and having some wine while enjoying our evening until we were very rudely interrupted by one of the servers to let us know that we were no longer welcome as they had reached capacity and we should leave. At the same time bringing the bills with a 20% gratuity for this fine feeling. When I approached one of these fine servers and politely explained that I had worked in this industry for more than 6 years and that this was really unacceptable behaviour, she told me that we had moved the chairs around her restaurant and annoyed the clientele. I've feel like I've been to many establishments downtown and very rarely had an experience like this one. $48 for 2 glasses of average wine and a feeling of not being welcome...let's just say I will never be back, would recommend A&W before Midfield and would love to chat about policy and etiquette with its delightful owner. I preferred the brunch over the dinner, because the serving sizes of the meals we got were so disappointingly small... It got a tiny piece of duck confit in the middle of a tapas plate size ($17), with no side of vegetables. Same thing for my boyfriend who got the steak ($16). Wow. If you are a true wine guy and want a creative, geeky wine selection with great wine food, this is your place. The real deal. I had a Chinon rose that was killer, and a funky Calabrian red I had never even heard of. There are even GRAPES on the by the glass list that I had never heard of. The chicken liver pate was the best I've ever had -- had almost a fois grois texture with great toasts, mustard seeds, and pickles to die for. The duck prosciutto with pistachios and greens equally delicious. Mellow, bottles all over the place vibe. Very nice servers. It is s bit off the beaten path way out on west Dundas St. If I lived here I'd be here twice a week. read more

The first thing I noticed when I walked into this place was the smell: a combination of feet, cheese, and cleaning products. Not good! It was relatively empty for a Saturday night but that could have just been the rain. Our server handed us a drink menu to share between 5 people! What?! So we asked for another one. Some of us ordered cocktails which were delicious BUT they did not come with straws and when we asked for some, we were told that the place does not carry straws. How can a restaurant that serves icy cocktails in tall glasses not have straws? Finally, after acclimating to the unpleasant smell and settling on several rounds of drinks, we received the bill which was stated: $40. But we had like a million drinks! So being the honest people that we are, we inquired and the server admitted that he incorrectly tallied the total which was actually $115. To top it all off, this place is CASH ONLY. You are a wine bar that serves food and you are cash only? Sorry, that will not fly. The one good thing about this spot was the DJ who also plays at Union near the Gladstone. Also, to be fair, the drinks were very good - they just weren't drinkable without a straw! I hope this place gets their stuff together. It's a really nice spot in a great location. read more

I went over on a Monday two times, because I was in the neighborhood and wanted to have a nice romantic night out with my gf. I checked online, and both times it said they would be open. Both times, once we made it out, they were closed. I don't get to go out a lot, or have much time, so this really wasted my time. I emailed the manager first to let them know and I got no response. It seems like there is not much attention to client responsibility or customers, I find a lot of places in that area have the same sense of entitlement, As if I'm lucky to be walking into it. read more
