If I could leave 0 stars, I would. I wanted so much to like this practice, but unfortunately I had a truly awful experience with Midwives of NJ that left me feeling traumatized, dismissed, and completely disrespected. I switched to this practice halfway through my pregnancy, hoping for a more holistic and supportive approach to birth. What I received instead was negligent, unprofessional, and emotionally harmful care. During labor, the midwife failed to keep me or my husband informed, despite my birth plan explicitly stating that communication was important to me. When we asked what was going on, we were brushed off with, "Oh nothing, she's just being a naughty baby." Naughty? That's how they explain fetal distress? Got it. When my water broke and the fluid was green, I asked what that meant. I was told not to worry, but overheard her immediately tell her assistant that they needed to get the baby out ASAP. It was terrifying to be kept in the dark during such a critical moment. Thank God for my husband, who looked everything up and kept me informed. The midwife also never asked my permission before attempting to insert an internal fetal monitor... mind you something she had never done before. How do I know? Because she literally said "I never done this before. Could I try?" AND Instead of checking with me, she asked the OB resident if she could do it, and then proceeded to insert it incorrectly. For a full minute, they couldn't detect a heartbeat. I thought my baby was gone. Turns out she had attached the electrode to my vaginal wall. And rather than apologize, she laughed and said, "That doesn't have a heartbeat." I was horrified. She also told me to bear down during pushing. When I told her it didn't feel right for my body, she insisted: "That's the only way we're going to get her out. It's the most effective way -- listen to me." Bearing down made my heart rate spike and I felt incredibly unsafe. Then she had the audacity to tell me to calm down. The entire interaction was controlling, condescending, and dismissive of my bodily autonomy. Post-birth, I asked to keep my placenta for planting, and was told no because I had COVID. I clarified I wasn't planning to ingest it, just plant it in the garden. She responded, "No, it's dirty blood." Again, completely uncalled for and judgmental. She also wanted to suture me using a technique she had never done before, without my consent, until the OB stopped her. Postpartum support was just as bad. They said a midwife would visit the day after delivery, no one came. The next night, someone showed up at 9 PM, stayed for five minutes, and when I asked a question about latching, she told me to ask the hospital lactation consultant and left. At my 6-week follow-up, I asked for an IUD. When I asked if they use local anesthesia (because yes, that procedure can be painful), the midwife laughed and said, "You birthed a child, you'll be fine." They said they'd order the IUD and contact me when it came in -- weeks went by, nothing. I followed up multiple times, left a voicemail, and never heard back. Even the clinic environment was off-putting. Christian music playing in the waiting room made the space feel exclusionary and uncomfortable for those who don't share the same beliefs. All in all, this practice caused more stress than support. I left feeling like a burden instead of a person giving birth. My husband and I genuinely feel we would've had a better experience delivering on the side of the road than in the care of the midwife we had. I regret ever trusting this practice with my care and would never recommend them to anyone. read more

I had a wonderful experience for a gyn visit. It was so thorough and not rushed, the midwife probably spent an hour with me learning about my history, previous births, etc, and all very comfortably in a cozy, beautifully decorated room with a desk, computer, chair, and a bed, not half-naked on a table. The midwife was very kind and warm. The physical exam was one of the more dignifying that I have experienced. I paid $75 up front, and then they billed my insurance for out-of-network. The claim was denied twice, and I thought they were crazy for persisting, but apparently that is just the insurance game. Finally my insurance company agreed to pay some more since there isn't any other midwifery practice considered in-network. I am glad they will be further compensated! read more

They are antivax (and therefore anti-science). They pushed castor oil on me to induce labor (which I later found out could have killed my baby). They misdiagnosed postpartum eclampsia as "post birth swelling and elevated blood pressure", and I could have died. They said I just needed to take a bath and get a good night's sleep. They shamed me for my dwindling breast milk supply (I actually have IGT- insufficient glandular tissue- and my body is physically unable to produce enough breast milk to have a baby thrive) and their "breastfeeding coach" actually compared formula to "giving a baby cigarettes". And they discouraged me from taking a stronger blood pressure medication because it would "dry me up"... as if a dead mother who died trying to breastfeed is superior to a living mother who has to give her child the devil's juice- gasp!- formula. They push their religious agenda, and one of the midwives actually said some really racist things about my other doctor (who is from India). If this sounds like it works for you, then these are your people. If you prefer kind people and a safe delivery, look elsewhere. I would never recommend them to anyone. read more

I cannot rave about these Midwives enough! I actually look back on my birth story with nostalgia. I trusted my care providers every step of the way. Once my water broke, we ran into some hiccups, and I'm convinced that if anyone else was handling my birth it would've ended in a C-Section. Also, there were no birthing tubs when I arrived at the hospital, and they actually brought a blow up labor pool for me. I also had a difficult pregnancy and they were very supportive. The birth of my son was so empowering and I couldn't have done it without this amazing group of ladies! read more

I transferred to Midwives of New Jersey midway through my pregnancy. As I decided I'd deliver my baby at Morristown Medical Center and found affiliates who'd deliver there. I decided to go with Midwives of New Jersey after listened to Lisa's orientation. There is passion and compassion in her talk about pregnancy and labor. It proved in the end that I made the best choice about this specific practice as well as the hospital. I delivered my first baby with Kaitlyn, who I will be forever grateful for the beautiful birth experience. I delivered my baby viginally and naturually, no epidurial, not even with water bath. I don't think I could have done with that out Kaitlyn's encouragement and empowerment. As the first time mom, clearly I did not know how to push, the active labor process lasted 4 hours, a doctor stopped by in the middle and mentioned he might have to give me a c section. Thanks to Kaitlyn, I can see she was trying her very best to guide me with different pusing positions and be able to push my baby without any intervention. It was a absolutely beautiful, empowering, humbling experience that I feel very blessed I was able to deliver my baby naturally. Kaitlyn is the very best midwife I can ever asked for. read more

We loved our experience with the midwives!! Everyone is kind, professional, and so helpful from start to finish and beyond. Our son was born at Morristown Hospital and we just had our daughter at Our birthing center! After a crazy first birth that would've ended up as a c-section if it had not been for Lisa, my water birth with my second pregnancy was everything I had hoped for! I was so happy to be in such a relaxing environment with Rushea and Malia taking great care of me. The follow up appointments and services offered postpartum are top notch. So thankful for everyone involved, 10/10 would recommend. read more

As much as I am for a holistic practice and appreciate what these women do I am very disappointed with both the Budd Lake location and the Hackettstown location, both offices have given me several issues with receiving my birth control refills and they have extremely poor communication. Online it says their offices are open yet they never answer the phone, I don't think anytime I've called I've gotten an answer I leave voice messages and hear nothing for days and my pharmacy had to call them several times about my medication and it took them very long to respond back I don't understand how you could not answer the pharmacy calling about a patient's medicine. My appointment was months ahead and they told me they need my credit card information now? Never had a doctor do that, definitely extremely unsatisfied with their customer service and their practice. I would not recommend attending this practice if you need to be in touch with your gynecologist often because they will not answer. read more

Do not be fooled by their clever marketing or the nice, homey office. This is a business that practices obstetrics, not midwifery, and will give you a solid dose of religion and judgement in the process. I left them at 28 weeks due to a HORRIBLE experience with Cindy Redmond. There were a few red flags along the way (inconsistencies between the midwives I had met, worship music playing in the waiting room, one awesome receptionist, but also one that was rude and super dim). At my 26 week appointment though, all hell broke loose. All was progressing well - but Cindy decided that a one hour tirade about my weight was just what the doctor ordered. She was unprofessional, nasty, manipulative, and dismissive. I had not gained a lot of weight (and in fact was still in my regular, non-maternity clothing), but I was threatened with a c section due to my fatness and lack of stamina, a baby in the nicu, and a certain to be "crappy" placenta. She literally yelled at me as though I were a child, made assumptions about me, and treated my like garbage. She is an evil bitch. After speaking with several other people that used the practice, I've learned that this is her normal behavior. Apparently they bring her in around 25 - 30 weeks to give this abusive speech to anyone who was even a few pounds overweight pre-pregnancy. I don't know why they do it like this, but it's not working. Perhaps after I file my formal complaint with the Board of Medical Examiners they will change their ways. read more

These women made our first experience having and getting ready to have a child as positive as it could possibly be! Maybe you had a great experience with an OBGYN, but our first visit with the ones at our local medical practice left a LOT to be desired. So we visited with Lisa and the women at Midwives of New Jersey, and never looked back. They're personal, friendly, helpful, generous with their time, and best of all, treat pregnancy like a normal process that most women go thru. They allow you to TRUST YOURSELF, instead of what some machine or statistic says, and give families the confidence in themselves that enables them to go thru pregnancy sure in their choices. As a new dad that took an active role my wife's pregnancy, I cannot recommend Lisa, Cindy, Roxie, and Kaitlyn enough. I will never be able to find the right words to explain how incredible the Midwives are. I feel like the luckiest woman in the world to have found them. I went from starting at my regular OB which consisted of 10 minute appointments with zero information and just being another number in the book. The midwives appointments sometimes lasted an hour. They are incredibly educated and if there was anything you wanted to talk about or felt unsure about they make sure to give you the answers. They make you stronger and better educated on how to bring a baby into the world. These women are passionate. Its not just a job. I had many of them go out of their way before and after birth. They also provide such an amazing community after birth. Again, I really will never be able to put into words how thankful I am for the midwives. The fact that they all are out there trying to educate humanity for a better way to give birth is incredible and I hope they continue to influence women and men into understanding we need a change. I will continue to tell everyone about them in hopes that one day the US will have the LOWEST mortality rate in the industrialized world. We do intend to have more children and I will be so excited to work with them when I am pregnant again. Everyday I look at my son I feel so blessed and lucky to think he came into this world with the help of such incredible women that guided me to have the best and healthiest birthing experience. With my first birth, I used a midwifery near my home in Philadelphia. For my second birth I had moved too far out of the area, but thought I would -try- a more traditional route given the excellent rating for healthcare providers of the county. I was passed around several different OBGYN providers, one claiming to use a "midwifery-style", and all of whom misdiagnosed my son from 10 weeks pre-natal telling me he was going to DIE from hydrops fetalis. Needless to say, when by 20 weeks he was perfectly healthy, I gave up on the modern techno-medical model of care and went back in search of a proper midwifery near the Hunterdon Cty area. Enter the ladies of the MWNJ. So the good: lots of appointment times, 2 different offices, available 24-7 on the phone, great staff, long appts if needed, family friendly, caring and professional care, great senses of humor, definite dedication to what they do. The off putting: The Christian waiting room music (which wasn't unpleasant, but could be mistaken for pushy) & the slight inconsistencies between midwives at appointments (which weren't ever in direct opposition. Just different levels of concern for different things) But hey, don't forget, it's an emotional time. Never be afraid to ask a question as often as you need. The rock star AWESOME: When its time for your birth, these women get down to business! They practice EVERYTHING they promise to the last syllable. Personalized and attentive care through and through. Two midwives and a midwifery assistant at the birth. Support and power. Focus and pure compassion. Oh! And a firm hand when and if its needed to get you over that seemingly impossible hump. These are ladies that have your back through and through. YOU and your baby can do this! I will definitely continue to keep my postpartum and ongoing annual care in their experienced hands, despite them being completely out of my insurance network. Bottom line is they CAN be trusted and relied upon. As an experienced Yelper: Beware the validity of the one star reviews. There are usually two or three sides to a story. I asked about all of them directly and the answers were reasonable and feasible. And think about it..If you truly faulted a care provider with the death of your son, would you only Yelp it?? I can't say enough positive things about them. Lisa attended my 2nd birth and made it a very good experience, my first birth was with an OB and was awful. I wish I had gone with the midwives for my first birth because it traumatized me. I am so glad I went with them for my second. They really care about you, they spend time with you at every appointment and don't try to rush you out. They stayed with me in the hospital throughout the entire labor and delivery, supporting me, unlike my OB who popped in for 15 minutes at the end of a 24 hour labor. I am extraordinarily grateful to have had the Midwives of NJ caring for me throughout my pregnancy. They take their time during appointments, getting to know you and making sure you feel cared for and are prepared for birth. During labor, I got an awesome pep talk from Kaitlyn that got me through a time of doubt, after the birth (an at-home, water-birth) our baby had the sweetest newborn exam from Cindy, and a few weeks later, we received beautiful photographs taken by Christina. I wish more women could have this type of care. I couldn't have been more satisfied with the care I received and the birth I had because of the Midwives of NJ. The office immediately made me comfortable, each appointment I had I felt heard, and my hospital delivery was exactly as planned (water birth--and a quick one!). After having had a very intervention-heavy birth with my first child, I knew I had to go the midwife route to have a natural, less-complicated labor, delivery, and post-partum healing period. I was not disappointed. Cindy, one of the head midwives, was on-call when I delivered. Her level of expertise and her confidence in my body's innate ability to birth was exactly what I needed. There aren't enough good things I can say about the Midwives of NJ.. These women are kind, compassionate, and knowledgeable. After a traumatic experience with my first son, I was determined to have a healing birth when I became pregnant with my second. I knew from my very first visit that I was in the right place. My visits were nothing like at a "traditional" OB office. I never felt rushed, uncomfortable, or like "just another" patient. By the end of my pregnancy, these ladies felt like family to me! During my labor at the hospital, Lisa and the wonderful midwife assistant, Christina, were by my side the entire time. I had my first child delivered by Lisa and heather in Hoboken New Jersey in September 2017. They were fantastic! I came to them at about 33 weeks because my previous midwife Kristen Mallon advise me that she would not guarantee that she would be available to deliver my baby after seeing me for such a long time. That she preferred to work out of Hackensack but I wanted to deliver at Hoboken. She left such a bad taste in my mouth. I was excited when I found the midwives of New Jersey. My husband and I are so pleased with our decision to have the midwives attend us during pregnancy and labor. As a first time mom, I was treated with respect and dignity. There was always time to answer my many questions, and I was never rushed. My husband was included in the process and felt empowered and ready to help during labor. During labor, the midwife, assistant, and student were all there at the hospital. They helped provide relief and seemed to know exactly what I needed before I could even vocalize it (my mom noticed this, too!). I am grateful for their encouragement and support. Also, I find it pathetic that people are so annoyed at Christian worship music. Can't a private practice play whatever music they want? It's not like you are listening to sermons. My experience with the Midwives was absolutely fantastic. They were super supportive of our birth plan and when I had to stray from it at times, they were emotionally there to support me and my husband. Multiple midwives were there to support me throughout the entire birth process. I ended up delivering with Kaitlin and she was phenomenal. She was super encouraging and and really allowed me to labor in the way that I needed to. The midwives are really great at texting you and following up on how you are doing. I especially felt that way during the end of my pregnancy. I look forward to delivering all of my future babies with these women! read more

My daughter was "caught" at Hackettstown Hospital but they now do homebirths or births at Morristown Memorial. I can't speak highly enough about Midwives of NJ. I transfered here in week 28 of my pregnancy having come from from an OB and a clinic. The differences in my level of care was extreme black and white. The midwives truly care about you as a person, they listen to you, and honor you. I looked forward to my appointment every week! They patiently answered my numerous questions and I never felt rushed. My baby is now 3 weeks old and I'll be forever indebted to this establishment for giving me the birth experience I dreamt of and wanted so so badly (unmedicated hospital birth). This place is beyond 5 stars! I feel so grateful for it and for the midwives! P.S. When I was researching it online I came across some less-than-desirable reviews - all I can say is that's horsecrap! Just go to their orientation and you'll begin to see how amazing this place and the midwives are. People who leave bad reviews only tell one side of the story. I've never been treated better in my life medically until I came here. Also in regards to the religious stuff, it's just that they all happen to identity with being Christian. In no way does religion come up AT ALL, and they see clients from all walks of faith - I've personally seen Hasidic Jews and Muslims in the office. Who cares if they themselves are religious? It doesn't come up in their treatment of you AT ALL. P.P.S. Did I mention they take photos and videos of your birth free of charge? The weekly lactation meetings that are also free of charge? The new mother meetings that are ALSO free of charge? This place certainly has your best interests at heart. read more

STAY AWAY From Roxanne Mitchell! She came into my home, birthed my baby, and had me pay up front and submit my own claim to the insurance company. What I didn't realize on the claim form was her name and address. The check was sent from the insurance company to her home and SHE KEPT IT! After contacting her she lied about it, blamed another midwife, and finally sent me a portion of what she owed. She refuses to return my calls and will not send me the rest of the money. I also found out the midwife she blamed, she also stole money from. She seems so sweet but she is a thief and should not be trusted in your home or near your babies. I will be contacting a lawyer and the insurance company but BEWARE mommies! read more

I had both of my babies with the Midwives of New Jersey. I cannot say enough good things about this practice! When you walk into their beautiful office, the girls at the reception desk are happy and friendly. The atmosphere is warm and calm and all of the midwives are lovely. My appointments were usually at least a half hour long, I never felt rushed. As for my births, the first was in Morristown Medical Center. I had a waterbirth 2 hours after I arrived! Cindy and Lisa were both there, very encouraging. My birth at home was an amazing experience. Quiet and peaceful, absolute perfection. My team for that birth was Chrisy and Roxie. I plan to have at least one more baby (in a couple of years!) but I will never go anywhere else! I also attended the MotherCare class they offer and it was great to meet other moms who had a baby around the same time I did. Colleen (the woman who does the class,) was so real and relatable and I felt at ease in a very hormonal time of my life :) Great class, and I even got some new friends out of it! I love love love the midwives of NJ and their entire staff, they truly care about you and your baby your bringing into the world, they know everything and anything about what the true meaning on giving birth. As a first time mom to be they were encouraging, supportive, and educated me on what was best for myself, my husband and our baby boy that was coming into this world. I am so blessed to have then by my side throughout the whole pregnancy as well as after having my son, I continue to stay connected with them by even going there yearly for my annual exam, I am looking forward to my next birth experience with them when that time comes! read more

I waited over a year after the birth of my son to write this review because I wanted to make sure I was writing from a non-emotional place. My care at Midwives of NJ (MNJ) was great...up until the birth. I liked the home-like atmosphere of the office, the long appointments, and the many support services they offered (prenatal yoga, a new moms' group, the fabulously compassionate and knowledgeable lactation consultant...). My only complaints (before giving birth) were that they seemed to treat every single problem I discussed with them as "no big deal". My other complaint is that MNJ do not make it very clear, but they are a Christian organization (Christian music playing the waiting room, crosses on the walls). It's fine with me if you run a religious organization, but I would have liked them to make that clear from the beginning. My biggest problem with MNJ, was with one of their main midwives, Cindy Redmond. Cindy is a take-charge, authoritarian type of provider. The ONE time I met with her during my 9 months of appointments at MNJ, my husband and I both agreed that she was too forceful for us, and we considered not using MNJ for our care because of her. Naively, we decided that because she was one of many midwives, there was only a small likelihood that she would be on call for my birth. Well, I was wrong. The other midwives, the ones who saw me regularly, and with whom I'd built a relationship, were not present at my birth. Cindy was on call the night I gave birth, and she brought with her an assistant from MNJ that I had NEVER met with before. (I'm not even sure if she WAS a midwife or medically trained person). During my birth, Cindy was cold, dismissive, rude, and did not offer one word of comfort. Other than forceful exams, she did not touch me one time during the entire process. When, after getting to 8cm, I begged repeatedly for an epidural, she flat out refused (even though it clearly stated in my birth plan that I was to be given drugs if I asked for them). She offered no explanation as to why she was refusing to give me an epidural, no words of encouragement and no compassion. I sincerely doubt that she even read my birth plan. Her attitude was one of "I've seen this a million times, this is nothing special, your pain is not important to me, quit complaining and get on with it". At the hospital, her exams before and after the birth made me scream and cry in pain, and she never once apologized or offered soothing words during the process. My first exam with her upon arriving to the hospital was so forceful, I wondered if she was trying to break my water (something I specifically stated I did not want). When she was sewing me up after the delivery, she said "tell me if this hurts". I said, "it hurts!" and she said, "Well, it's supposed to" and proceeded. Within an hour of my son being born, I was trying (unsuccessfully) to nurse him. She said, "I can't stand watching this anymore" and shoved him onto my breast. It was devastatingly hurtful to have such a negative person in the room when during one of the most vulnerable and painful experiences of my life. I was especially disappointed in her attitude because I specifically chose midwives to avoid this type of treatment. In fact, I had to seek out therapy to help me process this birth trauma. Needless to say, I am beyond disappointed in the care I received at my birth and without question I will NOT be using MNJ again. read more

My wife and I switched from a "regular" OB to the Midwives of NJ at about 26 weeks. Nothing but praise for these ladies. We were greeted at orientation to videos of previous births and 3 of the midwives spoke for a while. All followed by Q&A. I was a little "sticker-shocked" to find out it would cost us $4000 out of pocket because my insurance does not cover this type of practice. They do let you pay it off during the pregnancy! With that aside, every appointment was about 40 minutes - 1 hour. Talking to us, asking us questions, us asking them questions. It was like you were talking to family instead of a doctor. When it came to the labor and birth - the first midwife, Kaitlin got to our apartment around 1pm, the next, Christina, not too long after and Roxy came closer to the birth. They stayed until our baby girl was born, cleaned up and left us at about 1am...after tending to the baby's needs and also my wife's needs. What an amazing experience. We would never do it differently again. We love these ladies and they are more like family. read more

I have been a client of the Midwives of NJ since my first pregnancy in 2010. There is no one else that I would trust for pre/postnatal care and the delivery of my babies with. I am eternally grateful that I came across them because I don't believe my births would have had the same outcome without their midwifery style support. Although I have never been seen by your typical OBGYN I have heard horror stories from my friends and family about how their births went and often how it ends in a c section. I believe that the knowledge that the Midwives have to offer about how birth should happen is invaluable. I have learned so much from these ladies and trust that they would have my best interest in mind while under their care. I have learned to trust in my body and have the courage to do so with their guidance. The amount of support they offer to not just their patients but also the public is astounding. The free weekly Lactation Circles they hold offer women so much support while trying to navigate their way through breastfeeding. The Mother Care classes allow you to associate with other moms going through the same stages of infancy as you. There is also so much more that the Midwives of NJ have to offer! This is a little long, but explains why they get a 2 star from me and I have been their patient for 12 years... Normally I leave my one time personal experience on the down-low, but since my experience with the midwives has been times three, I can honestly give an opinion. 9 to 12 years ago (my first 2 children) I would have given the midwives a 5 star, but somewhere along the way they have lost what made them a nurturing care givers and have become more of a business than being caring midwives. I had my last baby with them almost 2 years ago, so this post comes from an honest, pure, open mind. I have suffered from postpartum depression in the past, so I had a feeling it would not be different this time around. They claim they are supportive with postpartum, and I find that farther from the truth. They were made aware of my past postpartum depression, and not one time did they reach out knowing I am more prone to it. I got the normal check-up call, however, that was the last time. I reached out for my own health and got help through them. That was a year ago. Not one of them have reached out after prescribing medication to me. They wrote the script and as they did they wrote me off from that point on. During that time I had to call a few times for breast infections, to never get phone calls back. In fact, one of those times, my husband had enough and called himself and demanded help. It got to the point that I had a nasty breast infection that ruined my ducts and affected my milk supply in a big way. All because no one took me seriously. I think what made me seal the deal with the midwives, besides the fact that they got their money from me, so I am not longer their concern, was the last time I was there and the reason I will never return... I went to see the midwives and paid out of pocket to explain my medical symptoms to Cindy, who clearly thought I was just nuts, a postpartum depression head case, who responded to me, after dismissing what I was saying, the symptoms I was having was "normal" and nothing is wrong, but the deciding factor on my opinion was the fact she saw the look of worry on my face and said, "you look worried, what did the Internet tell you". The Internet told me nothing, I never looked anything up, I just knew what I was experiencing was not normal and Cindy wasn't the least concern or compassionate. I went to a reputable OB doctor after being hospitalized who took the time to listen to what I had to say (mind you, I told this doctor the exact same thing I told the midwives). She actually listened to me, and after did some testing, which if the midwives did they would have caught it before it got worse for me, found out I had one of the worse uterine infections she has seen and had to be on medication for 8 weeks. 8 weeks of medication because the midwives were more worried about their payment than helping me. In fact, the doctor who helped cure me remembered I told her I had postpartum depression and called me months later to make sure I was okay. So, that is why I gave them 2 stars. I believe they care the best way they can now that it's a business and not a place of caring women to help pregnant/postpartum women. I will say since they never contacted me again to make sure the medication they prescribed for postpartum depression actually was working, they made sure I got the medical bills sent to me continually even though they were paid in full right after I gave birth, you know the important thing, money, not the health of their patients. read more

I switched to the Midwives at 28 weeks and it completely changed the way I approached my first pregnancy. They were able to provide comprehensive services that has continued into my postnatal care (nutrition, emotional support, strategies, etc). It was worth every penny despite them being out of network, they allowed me to have an amazing birth. Before I saw them, I was afraid and apprehensive about labor and delivery. They were able to make my birth a touching and beautiful experience. I am forever grateful for their expertise, compassion, and passion for mothers and babies. read more

A completely different atmosphere and experience than anywhere else. From the genuine one on one care and long appointments, to the education behind every step throughout each trimester , I cannot imagine going elsewhere for care. From my first experience with the midwives group a few years ago for a regular checkup , I knew I wouldn't ever be as comfortable or as respected elsewhere. I truly wish more people knew about them and could experience the completely different approach they take on things . It brings such peace of mind every time I leave their office just from being around such positive and warm people. Their educational classes take a huge weight off your worrying shoulders as a first time parent. Just after leaving the first childbirth class I felt so much more confident no matter how my birth plays out. When life is already pretty stressful and pregnancy opens a new world of doors , they really give you the benefit of knowing you're in good hands. read more

First time mom here. I was not interested in having a highly medicalized birth with loads of unnecessary interventions, so I knew that I wanted to go the midwife route - especially with the hospital policies and C-section rates in NJ. After much research on my part, I found the Midwives of NJ. After meeting Lisa and Roxy at an orientation, I felt really good about having them as my healthcare provider to help me bring my daughter (who is thankfully healthy) in to the world. The good: - The appointments are nice and long and the midwives are personable (even Cindy, who has some really bad reviews on here. I actually really liked her no-nonsense approach). - Both offices are really nice and are nothing like a typical doctor's office. They are convenient to get to and have plenty of parking. - The hand soap in the bathroom is lovely. The bad (roughly in order of not so bad to downright awful): - There is religious music playing in the waiting room and crosses on the wall. I am going there for medical care. I don't want to have to wonder if decisions made for my medical care are influenced by someone's religious beliefs. They are not upfront about this during the orientation or on their website so the only way to know this is after you give them your $500 non-refundable deposit only to sit in their waiting room to hear songs about how Jesus loves you. - I will preface this by stating that the midwives always encouraged me to make my own decisions regarding my healthcare options, but they are against vaccines for pregnant women. I was encouraged to not get the flu shot or the whooping cough vaccine, even though my daughter would be born in the middle of flu season. They gave a pamphlet touting the risks of vaccines and there were no citations anywhere to be found on that pamphlet. - During one appointment, I was asked if I was planning on breastfeeding. I said yes, but also that I was not going to kill myself over it, so if it didn't work out, I was ok with formula feeding. The midwife responded "THE BENEFITS OF BREASTFEEDING ARE PROVEN. PROVEN." She was completely militant about it. Even my husband was totally taken aback. I think the decision on how to feed your child is up to you and only you. I feel sorry for women who are under so much pressure to breastfeed and then if it doesn't work out, the woman feels like a failure when she is anything but. I can totally see how the midwives would make this worse for someone. Again, I was given a pamphlet, without citations anywhere, which stated things like if you breastfeed your baby, the benefits will be passed down for seven generations (what?). Good luck proving that. - Many of my appointments were with a new midwife-in-training that didn't yet have hospital privileges. After feeling my belly, she told me that my daughter was facing the wrong way. She wasn't. - The office staff is mostly nice but there is an absolute dimwit among them. This person lost seven vials of my blood because she send them to the lab without the paperwork. During a subsequent appointment, I had to have my blood re-drawn. Three people (the office dimwit, another midwife assistant, and the new midwife in training) tried to draw my blood and none of them were able to successfully find a vein. At that point, I almost passed out and was done with being poked. I went home in tears. That was the absolute lowest point in my pregnancy. My first trimester blood work was not completed until my second trimester. - My second trimester anatomy scan results were also lost by the office staff. For every test I underwent (including the aforementioned blood work debacle), I was told "Don't call us, we'll call you with the results. If you don't hear from us, everything is fine." It was a good thing I was vigilant about my anatomy scan test results, because we did not know our daughter was healthy until several weeks had passed because no one realized that the results were missing. When I knew the test results were finally received, I called the office and was rudely told that I would have to wait for my next midwife appointment (in another month) to go over the results. Luckily, my daughter is healthy. If she wasn't, it would have been too late to do anything about it since I did not get to go over the results until I was almost 30 (!) weeks along. - On delivery day, my midwife took 30 minutes to show up and I almost gave birth alone in their parking lot. I was forced to push on my back and was yelled at for not pushing a certain way. I tore badly. When I pushed my way the baby was out in two pushes. The midwife then apologized for yelling at me. They also took pictures of my birth and postpartum period and then lost all of the pictures. Despite everything they screwed up, my daughter is healthy - but I would never, ever use this practice for anything ever again. Think twice before hiring these people. This practice is terribly disorganized. Even the OB that works with them warned me about this. read more

Words cannot express my gratitude to the Midwives of New Jersey. After my first child's birth (with a different practice) I was left disappointed with the support and care I received. So for my second pregnancy I looked elsewhere and found the Midwives of New Jersey. They were personable and made my husband and I feel right at home. Visits always included my younger child & I never waited long for appointments (unlike past practice). Lisa attended our second child's birth. Her support throughout the birth attributed to it being more relaxing and fulfilling than the first birth. We enjoyed the experience so much that with our third child we attempted a home birth. The experience was even better! Our third child's birth was attended by Kaitlin & Lisa. Both were patient & calm providing the exact support I needed. Having met with all the midwives during the course of my two pregnancies I can say that they all help take the fear out of birth. They instill in you a peace about the natural birthing experience that later leaves you confident during the birth. Their care both before and after the birth is also thorough. They took time to get to know not only me but my family too. This helps create a trusting relationship that provides trust in them during birth too. I admire the dedication & heart these ladies have for women & their families. I highly recommend them! read more

I had a terrible experience at this practice. During Covid (the months of June and July 2020), the owner and head midwife of this practice, Lisa Lederer, refused to wear a mask when with her patients (who are pregnant women, sometimes with their infants). She met with patients in a small room and sat only a few feet from them, without wearing a mask or even asking if they prefer she wears one. She did not require any office staff to wear masks. It took several complaints to the office staff, an email to Lisa, and a long phone conversation for me to convince her to somewhat change her policy. It is STILL not in line with every other medical office's policy right now. From our phone conversation, it is apparent she does not follow evidence-based recommendations from the CDC or other qualified institutions but rather follows her own anecdotal personal belief system. This is not what I look for in a medical professional. Additionally, they endorse and sell Juice plus products on their website. This is a clear violation of ethics and medical advice, as this product is an MLM (pyramid scheme) and has not been independently studied to actually work. read more

Extremely deceptive, non-transparent, and unprofessional. The midwife who hosted the orientation did not mention the birthing center facility fee (it is unclear whether this was intentional). When Christina did my insurance discussion follow-up call, it was again not mentioned. When I later contacted Christina about this, she first told me that I had misunderstood, rather than taking accountability for forgoing to share this. When I told her that I had asked repeatedly if $3500 was the cash price all-in and was surprised she failed to mention that there would be an additional $3500 birthing center cost, she changed her story and said that this is usually discussed at the first appointment because people "don't know what route they want to go." I expressed that this felt deceptive because I would be financially committed once I arrived to the first appointment to which she responded, "I'm not going to argue with you. You misunderstood and you're unreasonable." The Midwives of NJ fail to deliver transparent information and respond appropriately and professionally when confronted. Glad this came to light before I mistakenly chose to work with them. read more

As a VBAC candidate in NJ when your (amazing, supportive) OBGyn retires when you are 25w pregnant, you panic. Or at least I did. Several friends of mine recommended that I look into the Midwives of NJ and I'm so glad I did. I really liked how the care that I received at appointments was so personalized: the Midwives wanted to know how I was eating, if/how I was exercising, what supplements I was taking, what stresses were in my life, what kind of support structure I had set up for when the baby arrived...they truly do have your and your baby's best interests at heart and that always showed during my appointments. The two Midwives that I had at my birth--Lisa and kaitlyn--were phenomenal. They were emotionally and physically supportive yet also gave me space when i needed that during labor. They really went out of their way to make my hospital birth as serene and home-like as possible: dimming the lights, making sure I had the right size and properly inflated birth ball, bringing me ice and honey sticks, making sure the monitors (I needed to be constantly monitored as a VBAC'er) were as comfortable as they could be, keeping the volume in the room low at all times...thank you THANK YOU for helping me get the birth I wanted and that I knew my body was capable of. read more

My son died in their care--or lack of care-- I should say. Roxanne Mitchell actually refused to attend to me while I was in labor. In my opinion and from what I have learned from talking with OBs since, all three midwives that were there at that time (Roxanne Mitchell, Lisa Lederer, and to some extent Cindy Redmond [ I mostly saw the other two]) provided substandard care given my age and length of pregnancy. At that time they certainly did not seem to take risks of an older mother seriously. My son died during the end stage of labor. Under the standard of care that is expected of birthing midwives and OBs, he most likely would have been saved, because he actually would have been monitored throughout my labor. Instead, I was repeatedly told that it was still too early to go to the hospital and that they would be there soon. Yet, I was 2 weeks and 2 days past my due date and they never did attend to me during labor. In my opinion, this practice is only suited to births where the mother knows that there will be no difficulties with either her or her baby. As there are no guarantees, proceed at your own risk. Hopefully, these women have learned something from the mistakes they made with me and my son. read more
