I hired movers in Minneapolis and loaded up the truck. Four days later, u-pack arrived with my stuff ready for my Washington DC movers to unload it. If I had one complaint (I don't, but /if/ I did,), it would be that u-pack won't help you on the other end of the transaction. If you're moving to a suburb or a place with a loading dock, you're 100% fine. I was moving into the city and needed to have parking for this semi, which proved very difficult since I didn't yet live in the city. Even so, U-Pack worked with me to find a visible solution and ended up storing my items on the truck for a few extra days until my parking permits could take effect. Final comment on this: on what was already a very challenging and stressful move, their dispatchers and drivers were a 6/5 stars. They were so nice and patient. I told one dispatcher the problem with parking and she said "you sound so stressed, sweetie. Don't worry, we'll find you a solution. Welcome to DC." I seriously would have hugged her through the phone if I could have.

Reading the BBB reviews of Packrat scared me away, so I stuck it out with UPack and couldn't be more satisfied. My ReloCube arrived well ahead of schedule and it was dropped off early in the morning. Just a word of advice though: When loading your contents, don't call to schedule your pickup until it's totally ready! They don't offer pickup windows. I asked them to pick it up at the end of the day (which they said they'd try but couldn't guarantee it) and it came at 10am - yikes I wasn't ready! Thankfully they came back the next day for no charge. Barb on the phone was really personable and pleasant. She gave me a suggestion on what to check out on my road trip and it was awesome! The reality: the crew arrived at 1:30 PM -- 90 minutes late -- and finished at 6:30 PM. The final bill was ~$1,000, more than double the estimate. This was a light load: ~1,000 lbs, ~35 boxes, no beds or appliances. The crew told me their previous job that morning had also been scoped at 2 hours and ran to 4 -- they arrived exhausted, and it showed. Two movers were sent to what was realistically a 3-man job. Along the way they gouged a wall at my old house and scratched a door and chipped the frame at the new one (see photos). I called their office multiple times during business hours -- no answer. The aftermath has been worse. I disputed in writing with photos. First they told me a damage claim was submitted with a 4-6 week window; two days later the same manager wrote there was "no claim number associated with this one." No adjustment offered. The estimate isn't a plan -- it's a sales tool. If you book them anyway, document everything.
