The website and everything about this shop still says they do bike rentals. We arrived and the man scoffed at me when I asked about 2 rental bikes. He said "we don't do that, there is a bike shortage you might have heard about". When asked about any other place that may rent bikes his response was "no clue" and walked away. I went in for some lights and a bike rack. Mike had everything I needed. He was booked for repairs the remainder of the day but could get to me the following morning. I appreciated that he was upfront about when he could get to my bike. I've been to some shops that over promise and under deliver. Those situations are a waste of time. Like Superman, this guy is faster than a speeding bullet. No word on his ability to leap y'all buildings in a single bound, but that's not relevant to my trip here today. I only had 30 min on my lunch break so I was gonna drop my mom's bike tire off and pick it up later in the week. He fixed it in approximately 3min. The best place to go for any bike needs. They do a very thorough job here and are very friendly. They take cash or credit cards which is great. I've been there in the past for something as simple as getting air in my tires, to getting new tires when mine had a hole in it. They know just what to do. Today I went in because someone stole the hinge that keeps my bike seat in place- I asked for the exact same one. They kindly explained to me that if I got the same one it could easily be stolen again and they can steal my bike seat as well. Instead they did one better and put a bolt in so that it would be harder to steal and the whole thing only cost me $5 and I was in and out in less than 5 minutes! read more

Honestly mike, when you resort to calling someone a liar and getting nasty you only make things worse for yourself. My bike fell off the rack when I was moving out here so I took it to Mikes because it was the closest to my apt. They said they would do a full check-up to make sure everything was working ok. They had to replace the tire and that was fine, although there was a minor thing that wasnt fixed but hey, cant expect perfection. Next time I went in to get a bike lock, I asked the man at the counter about the locks they had and he was the opposite of helpful. Basically, he said any one of them will do. Great, thanks. Third time I went in 30 mins to closing because my gears stopped working on my ride home. Guy behind the counter said there is nothing he can do, bring it back tomorrow because we dont hold them overnight. Now, I know it was close to closing, but could you at least pretend to take a look or even ask me what exactly is the problem to see if it would actually take more than 10 mins? I can't say this a nicer way than this. I was struck by a car and I needed an estimate for how much repairs would cost me. This shop demanded that I pay an additional $20 just to write their repair estimate on a piece of paper. I was completely shocked- and I ended up spending the 500 dollars or so to fix my bike at another shop. After nearly four months, the owner of this bicycle repair shop finally decided to respond to my negative review. Rather than address his terrible customer service, he claimed that my review was illegitimate. When my customers are unsatisfied, I attempt to reach out to them personally and address their concerns. That may be an accurate comparison. Not sure which guy was Mike and which wasn't. I went in to inquire about my bike which had been mangled when I was struck by a car. The shorter, fatter guy recommended that I buy a new bike online since mine was cheap and I wanted something that he didn't sell. It seemed odd that he wouldn't want to order one for me and make a little cash on the mark-up. Anyway, I did what he said. After assembling my bike, I came in to ask if he could help me put a bike rack on it. I also wanted to upgrade the brakes and tubes since they weren't that great. The wheels needed to be trued as well. He told me that I bought a hunk of crap and that I should have just bought a better bike. The taller guy seemed to understand that it was a starter road bike. The bike road in there kind of crappy and came out riding smoothly. It cost $60 for a tune-up and $6 to install the rack. I think those are phenomenal prices, but I'm not sure if I'm willing to pay for abuse that I could get from my wife for free. This guy is a real pill if you are a new rider and don't know what you're doing. He was also unkind to my sister when she came in to spend $800 right after that. All-in-all, I MIGHT give this guy another chance. Who knows? All I can say is that I would be a little more friendly when trying to attract new people to my sport AND business. read more

I've been by a few times, usually dropping off my roommate's bike when she busts it up. He's always fast with a fix and fair, even giving her a price break for a basic repair when she showed up in her City Year uniform. Great friendly bike repair and very quick! Only been here once but am planning on going back next time I have some miscellaneous problem that is out side my repair repertoire. Not only did they have some ball bearings and grease and a quick fix in about 10 minutes which would have taken a week or two anywhere else in New Orleans. Today I got a flat on my way to work (a frustrating way to bring in a Monday morning). Mike the Bike Guy is sort of on my way home so I figured I'd walk my sad little bike over there and see if I could pick up a new tube if they couldn't fix it (they normally don't do any repairs, except sometimes flat fixes, after 2PM). They met me at the door. Popped my wheel off. Determined I needed a new tire and tube. Adjusted my brakes. Fixed my temperamental chain. Lubed her up. $25 and about 7 minutes and I was out the door. Their customer service is a little abrasive sometimes, but I'm pretty sure that's a requirement of a decent bike shop. Take it with a grain of salt and appreciate a quick, inexpensive, job well done. read more

Having seen all of the great Yelp reviews, we headed here when the bf's bike was being freaky. Didn't know exactly what was wrong, because we didn't really stop to check. But, turns out he needed new tires and a new wheel! So, it was 3pm when we visited the shop. Being a full time medical student it was important for him to get the bike fixed. But, Mike the Bike Guy doesn't keep bikes overnight- and if you leave it there by not picking it up when you should, he charges you $5- so he wouldn't fix the bike that day. Even though he didn't close for two more hours, he wouldn't fix it. Honestly though, I don't know anything about bikes so maybe it really does take a few hours to put on new tires and the guy was helping us out by saying come back tomorrow. So, bike went back in the car- scratching it and making it all dirty- and both of us had to rearrange our schedules in order to get the bike AND pick it up on Mike's schedule. It was a big pain in the butt, however Mike seemed pretty trustworthy and people seem to think the prices are right. So, I would give 4 stars but it was just not a great experience for me due to scheduling and the shops hours. read more

After having experienced brusque, supercilious, overpriced, attitude-heavy service at a number of different bike shops in several different cities, I'm starting to realize that the problem isn't really with specific bike shops, but with the whole industry. In that sense, it's hard to criticize Mike the Bike Guy for being somewhat curt and charging semi-usurious prices for basic bike repairs, because every other bike shop does the same thing. Mike the Bike Guy is very close to my house, so it's the most convenient place to go if I need a brake tightened, a tube replaced, or a wheel trued up. They charge Cadillac prices for parts and labor - most likely due to their high-rent Magazine Street location - but they generally do the job quickly and competently, so it's hard to complain since I know exactly what I'm getting into when I walk in. Consider this a cautious recommendation; if you can do the repairs yourself, do them yourself. If you need the help of a bike repair shop, you could do a lot worse than Mike. read more

The movers tore my bike to SH*T but Mike brought the old beast back to life. He was honest about what he did and didn't do in the tune-up (she has deeper issues) and charged me fairly. Every bike tune-up should come with a pamphlet about how ridiculously third-world the roads are around here and how you need tank treads to ride for a month straight without blowouts. But that's not his issue. He got my bike in shape and got me riding aggressively again, and for that I have to thank him. While I love riding bikes, I have no idea how to fix anything regarding a bicycle, whether it is changing a flat, putting them together, etc. This place fixes flats for $10, all in about 5 minutes. When my parents were shipping down my bicycle and it needed to be put back together, this place did it the same day UPS delivered it. Any maintenance issue will be taken care of same day. Keep in mind, though, that in less you pick up the bike the same day, they will charge a storage fee for each day you leave it with them (I think it's $5 a day, but I could be wrong.) read more

Ok so i get it that people think Mike is mean or not friendly enough, but him and his staff are good at what they do. I have been there 6-7 times now and they are always prompt and do good work. I am completely bike illiterate, and it is obvious. They could have ripped me off, and instead they have now made two minor fixes on my bike for free. I walked in, they popped everything back in place, and i was out ten minutes later, no charge. I am a loyal customor because of that and will remain that way. Mike is a bit gruff (or maybe I just visited him at both the beginning and end of the work days) but no one can deny his bike shop runs a great service. I'm a simple fix customer (brakes, tires, chain, alignment) etc. and I feel like I'm treated like the more expensive customers. Had a VERY simple chain fix today and got great service and told no charge. 10/10 would go back, even if Mike is sometimes a grump.
