Came in to get brakes fixed. I thought my chain needed to be replaced as well, but was very well explained to that it was fine and just needed a quick adjustment. They could've easily tried to get more money out of me there, because I didn't really know what I was doing, but they didn't. That is extremely respectable. Not to mention the repair was done in 3 hours and I could go pick it up. Very fair prices. Wanted to give a huge kudos to Bicycle Michael's. Went into the store and was surprised at all of the items they have, floor to ceiling! If you don't see something ask! Staff was super helpful and had everything I was looking for much to my wallets dismay. Prices were fair and besides the jacket, shirts (x3), and a jersey. Almost rented a bike but ran out of time. As a disclaimer my name is also Michael so that did influence some of my buying. Jacket/Huddie is light weight and the material is very good. I wear it all day. Not ideal for super cold but for mild cool weather it is awesome. I like the card logo on the back as well. Jersey has New Orleans main attractions which is cool if you know the places but I think for my preference I would have preferred more of a bike logo or New Orleans in bold print so people know. Wear the jersey on all my rides and can say it is very comfortable and holds up well. Shorts are like the jacket, love them and giving as gifts. Bike rental: super fair price and they had several recommendations on where to ride. I just ran out of time and my wife doesn't ride so will attempt it on my next trip out there whenever that may be. Staff: super helpful and humorous, wife who doesn't ride came out of the shop with things to see and do. * At night time this street is also a local's hangout. Very lively and good place if you want to get away from the tourist traps. Very busy though and packed with people because it is still advertised however it is off the beaten path so you don't run into anyone trying to sell you free beads. read more

Being the Thursday before Mardi Gras I knew my chances of getting in and out quickly were nil, but they told me to bring it in and they'd see what they could do. I was fully expecting to hear from them next week at the soonest, but got a text today (24 hours later) letting me know that it was finished and ready go. Picked my bike up a few minutes later, repaired, tuned up and ready to ride. Very fair pricing, too. Long story. But I've been a bike and auto mechanic for more than 30 years. I stopped in looking for a 20.7 Seatpost. The manager fella said, "no you want a 22.2. I said I'm looking for a 20.7 he said there's no such thing. I said yes there is. I used a caliper to measure mine and I've serviced bikes that have used this post. He said " well you're in the wrong place, i can't help you. I turned around and left. I ordered my post online and received it with surprising speed. The worst thing about mechanics is when they're too stupid to admit there's something the don't know. Just say I've never seen one or I'm not familiar with that. Don't act like it doesn't exist! When I entered with a friend I began browsing and my friend asked one of the guys if they worked there so we could get help to better navigate the store. I've been going to Bicycle Michael's for over 20 years. They are not always the cheapest option (in the short term), but that's because they refuse to carry things that break too easily, and they stand by the products they carry. It is, however, cheaper in the long run to spend a bit more on the front end for something that will last a lot longer. That said, they do still carry some inexpensive options, but they tend be a lot more selective about which ones. With as many bikes as they fix there, they're very knowledgeable about which ones break. So, I highly recommend them because I trust that they will never sell me garbage, unlike a lot of other shops that either don't know or don't care which products are junk. On the rare occasion that I have purchased something from them that didn't live up to expectations they have always been great about repairing or replacing. read more

They carry Ortlieb brand bags and Abus quick release locks at reasonable prices and will install foe you. I had a flat repaired at another shop only to discover it was immediately flat again. Brought it here and it seems to be fine now. I was notified the tire was ready but when I got there 20 minutes after the text, the doors were locked. Waited 15 minutes after their stated opening time and still not open so I would recommend calling before you go just to make sure. read more

Speaking purely from a customer service standpoint, I have visited the shop and called numerous time with questions/inquiries; some of the most patient, helpful people you'll find for your biking needs. Receptive to what I want, no pressure to buy, great selection of bikes. This is my first time buying a bicycle as an adult and being a potentially large purchase, they have been very open to finding what I'm looking for and offering support and suggestions. I walked in today after boycotting for 10 years because they were so pissy the last time I was in - the last many times I was in. And what do you know, a man walked in, needed help with his motorized bike, and they were so rude. Didn't just say we can't work on it but had to go on and on about how it wasn't worth their time and make the guy feel bad. He had even called ahead. It's his transportation to get to work. I don't use Bicycle Michael's often because they're not near my house, but I do use them for specialty work as they instill a sense of confidence in their competence. The work is quick and efficient, and always done to my satisfaction. Although rates are subjective in general, I find their prices for mechanic work commensurate, and in some cases a little lower, than other shops, which of course is a big plus. If there's any complaint, it would be that every time I get my bike back, there are numerous paint chips. I just wish they would handle with a little better care; maybe serious cyclists don't care, but even though I don't consider myself a poser, I like to maintain a decent finish on my bike. read more

I brought in my 1yr old Giant bike in when hearing sounds that made me think the bike would seriously fall apart within a few more pedal strokes. But I made it to Michael's. Tim took major awesome care of the bike, diagnosing the easy stuff then drilled down (figuratively) to find the core of the problems. Tim and Michael were very cool and chill to talk cycling with. After some grease in the lower crank thingy, brake alignment, chain cleaning and whatever mechanical Marvel's, the bike ride better than new. BETTER THAN NEW. Well stocked and knowledgeable but pricey on merchandise. I haven't had work done here but they seem competent.

Rentals are $25 per day, which seems a little steep. You have to return the bikes by 11 am the next day, no matter what time you rent them - so you have to show up when they open at 10 am to get the full value. It would be better if you could return them 24 hours after you take them out. The disposition of the staff is nonchalant bordering on surly. Sample exchanges: Q: "could I have the bike I rented yesterday?" A: "ahhhh.... that bike's all the way in the back, with a bunch of other bikes in front of it. So we'll give you another." Q: "could I get a basket attached to my bike?" A: "Sure, it's $5 extra." [after fiddling with the basket for a minute]: "I'm having some problems attaching this. Are you sure you need it?" But I didn't notice anywhere else to rent bikes in the area, so you'll have to suck it up. The bikes aren't fancy, but totally adequate. read more

As a local this is where I get my parts, repairs, accessories and kind information about it all. They can usually tell me approximately how many beers I can consume before my bike is ready. Two to three casual beers at a neighboring adult beverage center and my bike is usually ready or at least its on the bench and in the works. It can get a little crowded when the renters are in town. Its a small shop so just a few people in there and it gets a bit to cozy. The staff works hard to keep everyone taken care of. Michael and Tim are a wealth of information on everything bicycle. I rented a bike from Bicycle Michaels. The guys were nice enough, but I spent $80 to rent a 15-20 year old bike. I was hoping to ride for two days, but the seat and post were pretty old school and I could not get them to be level. I did a 50-mile ride and I was kind of spent from the poor seat and post. The folks I dealt with were nice and they were pretty much the only game in town so I didn't have much of a choice. When I returned the bike, I mentioned that I wasn't 100% happy and the guy behind the counts said that I should have just brought my bike from home. read more

A group of my friends and I went to New Orleans end of October. All experienced bicyclists, we knew we wanted to check out NOLA on bikes. Although we read some negative feedback about Bicycle Michaels on other websites, we went in anyway since we were staying in the neighborhood. I cant imagine, for the life of me, how anyone could have a negative experience here. This is a great bicycle shop with knowledgeable and friendly staff! We rented our bikes for two days and being on a bike is the best way to see and experience NOLA. It is fantastic!! They even provided bikes that suited our body types the best. Ie, tall and short. The price is definitely reasonable and I would suggest forking over the $5 for the basket!! You will need it!! We were sad to give our bikes back and even hung around in the store chit chatting the staff up. During this time the sky being to pour, and lacking umbrellas, one of the owners suggested we go next door to d.b.a. for a cocktail. It was the best advice ever as this was, hands down, our favorite place & night in NOLA with live music and dancing!! I am definitely going back to NOLA and most definitely renting a bike from Michael's again!!! read more

Just recently purchased a used Schwinn Sierra at a great price. The bike is a perfect fit and man does it ride fast and smooth. Michael and his staff were great at fitting me with the best bike I could afford. They also have a great selection of accessories and gear. No cheap stuff here all to quality, plus they do great repair work at a fair price especially considering that he is in the quarter. I was slightly weary simply because I had read some of the reviews. I arrived at the shop 30 minutes before they closed, needing a new tube, wheel adjustment, brakes tightened. The guy explain they were about to close and it could be ready maybe today but tomorrow would be easier, which I understand. I hobbled a bit and the guy checked if I was okay, I explained old bike wreck injury and that I ride better than I walk, he then told me to come back at 5 and he'd have it ready( I am at times in a heep of pain due to a bicycle accident, walking from the Bywater to this shop had me in so much pain. Riding a bicycle is much easier for me). Sure enough it was ready at 5, that kindness saved me from a painful walk home and I am very greatful. I can't recall his name, really great staff thank guys. I'm a local cyclist who works downtown and needed some help. They had a sign that they don't look at anything/work for free. I told them the issue I was having, and they helped immediately, took a couple minutes, no charge. I think the fact that I was somewhat bike savvy and had a bike that I take care of may have affected their treatment. The person riding a 4 year old bike that has never seen a cleaning and barely knows which side is the front (handlebar side) may get different treatment. read more

What a great find and a wonderful day! I found the bike shop pretty easily as it was a straight shot down Royal Street and then a quick right onto Frenchman. The walk from Monteleone Hotel to the shop was about 18 mintues and was really a great walk as there were many shops to see along the way. When I arrived they were already helping a few customers but acknowledged me right away. I was set up with a bike, lock and suggestions of where to go in about 15 minutes. Staff was great - very friendly and helpful and I would go back there again in a heartbeat. The bike ride was great - went towards Audubon Park and then the Levee Bike Path for a bit. The Park was amazing! I had gone to City Park the day before which was also nice - but if I only had time to choose 1, then Audubon would win out hands down. It was super easy to get to - down Royal Street and the I followed the St Charles trolley the entire way. There were some amazing houses along the way and plenty of places to stop for a beverage or treat of your choosing. CAUTION: I am used to riding in the city so I didn't mind being on an agressive roadway or the busy streets that started this route. Thanks to Michael's Bicycles for selecting the route! I got lost - sort of on purpose - on the way back as I was in no rush to get back. Was gone for about 4 hours. P.S. Levee Bike Path was just ok - I think after seeing the beautiful homes, interesting neighborhoods and churches, the cement pathway was quite bland, even with the River view. read more

We rented bikes ($25 per day) for one day (11am-11am). Locks came with the bikes, but my lock jammed, so we had to ride back to the shop to get a new one. I got a flat, and they changed the tire quickly (beware broken glass post-mardi gras). The guys working there were friendly and helpful. One thing to note: the shop is not open on Wednesday. We rode all over the city. The best riding was near Tulane and Loyola, a bit away from the crowds. read more
