I'm coming to the defense of Mike's Beer Barn, the venerable W. Tennessee St. landmark/institution which has an appallingly low review count (4, prior to mine) with an outrageous 2-star average to boot. The one-star review, incidentally, was strictly due to an inexperienced clerk failing a diacritics/sentence structure exam dispensed by an apparent frequenter of the islands who took offense to the mispronunciation of "Curaçao". Ladies and Gentlemen of the jury - I move for a mistrial! The fact is that Mikes Beer Barn is to bacchanalia as Gumby's is to gourmandism. I gave Gumby's four rightfully deserved stars and now confer similar stars to the Barn. First off, a history lesson on Beer Barns. Generally, these "package store" oddities are found in rural regions of Michigan, Ohio and Texas. I'm not entirely sure the history of Mike's, but I DO know it's where I bought my first full keg in October 1987, and it had been open a good while prior to then. (It was Killian's Red, BTW). There are surely plenty of kegs and pony kegs to choose from here, in addition to liquor. I stopped by to fill up today (we were on fumes) and I popped my head in. Ctge liquor is what you'd expect so close to a large student population - it's no Market Square Liquors, nor does it purport to be. Don't count on a variety of Calvados nor a bottle of Fernet Branca. Do count on flavored vodkas, southern comfort and the like. Mike's is an integral part of two generations of FSU graduates, at least. It deserves a place in the landmark lineup! Lastly - why is Mike's not getting five stars in class (the class, naturally, being "Barn-type outlets)? - because it absolutely FLEECES you when you're seeking to purchase gas. by "Fleecing" I mean charging $2.99 per gallon when the in-town average is around $2.20 for the low octane. That is outrageous, but Mike's is doing nothing illegal. the price is posted clear as day on the pumps. Perhaps it's because this location generally prompts drivers to pay inside with an ashtray full of nickels, dimes, pennies and the occasional quarter. As such, I've labeled this "ultra-high-end" in the Price Range questionnaire section. read more

Their employee, leerawn, is a bit slow and some could even say harassing but, everyone else was pretty friendly and gave me a pretty good experience in general. read more

This a great idea especially for a college town. We had to get beer and liquor for my best friends 21st birthday and I was told Mike's Beer Barn was a Tallahassee/FSU staple. They're open super late AND have a drive thru. We could have gone to Walmart for a keg, however we preferred to support local business. Mike's has all sorts of types of beers. Honestly I couldn't even name them all but the ones o do remember hearing were: Bud, Bud Lite, PBR and Yingling. They had two keg sizes, full and half. We got the half because we had bottles of grey goose already so we didn't need that much beer. When you rent a keg at Mike's you can also rent some of your essentials. You can rent a tub and a tap for your keg with a deposit of $85. As long as you bring both the tap and tub in good condition you get the $85 refunded in full. The one downfall about Mike's is they don't have ice, however the drive thru makes up for it. read more

A bit overpriced. But I was most struck by the service. The man asked to see my ID, so I gave it to him. And he has to look at my birthday, right? I mean, that's the main thing he's looking at. So he should have noticed that the birthday on the card was the day that I was in there! And you know what this guy says to me? Well, I don't remember exactly, something like "Okay here you go," but you know what he DOESN'T say to me? "Happy birthday." It would not have been that hard to do me the basic common courtesy of wishing me happy birthday. Oh, and it was my 21st birthday! So this was my first time legally buying alcohol, which was relatively exciting for me. Totally ruined by this guy. If it's your birthday, don't go here. The staff are very nice. The owner (and his dog) are ever present and very involved. They offer a fairly wide selection of name brands, kegs, wines, and beers. They have a drive through! Small selection of craft beers. If you are looking for crafts I would recommend Beer Stop on Apalachee parkway. One issue is store front parking. There are no actual parking spots so people tend to pull in and park every which way making it hard to get in and out. I would recommend they add parking lines in the front. read more

Place has everything you need for keg stuff. Needed a tap for the keg....of course mikes had a tap for rent. ($10) Person who runs it is legit. Handed me a tap from bucket full of cleaning solution. Outside might look shady but operation inside is legit. read more

A friend and I went into this store on 9/23/19 and picked out two items. When I went to the counter to pay, the clerk was very disagreeable, and told me that my "friend" was "trouble". (They had grown up in the same neighborhood). I don't mind unsolicited opinions, but it's inappropriate for a clerk who is serving you to make them. When I received my credit card slip, the clerk said in a loud voice "Don't ever snatch out of my hand". I didn't think I had committed this offense, but I apologized and left. So be on your best behavior when going to this store. I will be patronizing Seminole from now on. read more

THIS IS BETTER FOR A QUICK ALCOHOL RUN WITHOUT TASTE (Warning: young adult visitors from Tampa Bay in for the weekend) Obviously the Craft Beer or Distillery revolution hasn't swept up Tallahassee yet or else there'd be better options in here. Probably 90% of the alcohols here are the name brands, the domestics, the Bud Lights, and the Captain Morgans. WE WERE MERELY SEEKING CRAFT BEER There were definitely some Craft Beer options but we were hoping for something smaller than a six-pack like a build-your-own six-pack or just single bottles/cans. The only Florida-local single Craft Beer were the HUGE bottles... so that's what we took. CONVENIENCE AND COLLEGE I can see this place being pretty busy since it's open late, is very convenient being a drive-thru alcohol stop, and this is a college town--sometimes you don't care about quality of product as long as you get alcohol somehow. So how about I had a smart ass clerk who was probably not a day over 18 tell me that Blue Curaçao is pronounced blue curaco after I asked him for it by its proper name? Uhm, no, it isn't. Blue Curaçao is named after an island in the Caribbean - one that I actually have been to, mind you - and the reason there is a diacritic on the c is because it's supposed to sound like an s. I will never come here again because even if I HAD been wrong, the way he mentioned it wasn't in any way helpful or constructive but rather rude and immature. Their clerks need to grow up and learn to value customers, especially in a town with so many far superior liquor stores. read more
