Another 5 stars. These guys are great. My new brake line (that I tried to install myself with no experience or proper tools) ) wasn't working right. So I had to come back to the folks at Mike's today for some help. I dropped it off when they opened at 10, and it was ready for pick up the same day. They helped me with my chain, and the brakes, now I have a brand new 25 year old bike...money. They also informed me that I had some other things going on (broken spoke, head set needed attention), which I appreciate...a little extra step goes a long way in my book. Really overpriced for repairs and they have terrible policies. (Go to Tip Top Bikes or anywhere else). A spoke broke on my back wheel. Then it broke again a few months later. I took it to Mike's Bikes both times and it cost $80 each time to replace a spoke! Then the spoke (or a different spoke) broke again about a week after the 2nd time. They said they'd re-do it for free, but I should really just replace the whole back wheel. I suggested they just apply the $80 bucks' worth of labor they were about to give me and apply it towards a new rear wheel, which was going to run somewhere between $100 and $200 and I'd pay the difference. The manager wouldn't do that. So they fixed the spoke a third time, and when I picked it up -- having to take the bus each time -- he said I really should get the rear wheel replaced and that it wasn't safe to ride. As if he cared about my safety!! The spoke broke again about a week after that 3rd repair, but I surely won't take it back to Mike's Bike's! I've made an appointment to get the rear wheel replaced at a different shop. It was a frustrating saga with Mike's Bikes and a huge waste of my time and money. I think they're really only interested in selling high-end bikes, not in providing any kind of decent or cost-effective repairs. read more

This is the only place that tracked down an e mountain bike to fit my 4'11 height. They have a good selection of bikes, were helpful and will put all the bells and whistles on your bike which is good for me since I'm not very handy. They let you test ride the bikes too which some places won't allow. You kind of need to ride a bike first to see if it's a good fit. read more

Wow! The price of a new bike has gone up! A basic Trek three years ago cost me $350; a new basic Public brand bike this week cost $550, and it has only half the gears of the Trek. Even the Trek was a piece of junk that broke down in a few years - not half as sturdy as my previous Trek, which I bought used for $200 and was probably 15-20 years old when I was persuaded to buy a new one for the price of fixing the old one. But I want to praise Benton and Sal in the repair section. They're great mechanics and very kindly people. Benton today bent over backward to meet my needs. A prince among men. read more

They are open during SIP and thank ye for it. My husband's tire popped on a bike ride with our son and I picked 'em up and we headed straight here after I called to confirm they are open. I noticed a sign on their window that said pull around to their back parking lot (who knew that even existed). There they had a tent set up, and a system to deal with clients during this time. For $18 and change, they fixed my husbands tire in about 30 minutes and we were out. That was with a little bit of a line on a beautiful Friday afternoon. I absolutely love this place! Some bike shops have really pretentious employees for whatever reason, but the folks working here were super friendly, helpful and patient. I came in with a few repair project questions and the guy working walked me through what options were available and took the time to explain things in a way that didn't go over my head. The most important point I want to highlight about MB is that there was no pressure to buy stuff immediately. The employee was very informative and let me know it was okay to give it some thought rather than buying a bunch of parts and then changing my mind. Currently it looks like a lot of retailers (not just in this industry) are experiencing supply shortages, so if you need parts, be ready for a scavenger hunt! Although MB didn't have everything I needed, they were helpful in pointing me towards other places that might be able to help. I thought that was cool. I have a 1996 Cannondale Super V 700 I bought brand new back in the day that has reached the end of the trail, unable to be repaired due to lack of parts, especially for the needle shock. I was researching new Cannondale mountain bikes for about a month. Found out my new pride and joy would be the Habit 4, and in stock here at mikes bikes in Berkeley. Note that the actual red paint in the stock photos isn't shown correctly, as its more of an amazing dark tone than seen here. Jose was a great help from the word go. Answered all my questions, set me up for the test ride...which was NUTS btw, this bike, all I can say is DAYUM it's a monster. I'm more than happy, actually elated with my purchase, and what I'll be able to do with it. Mikes Bikes has top notch friendly people. I'd gladly refer and recommend this shop to anyone looking for a damn good ride...although on the pricey side, the bikes they tend to carry are on the higher end of the range, but damn well worth every penny. read more

Boy was I surprised with the staff and selection of Mikes Bikes in Berkeley. I walked in expecting to find what I thought was going to reflect mass merchandised brands that fit into the mass needs. I expected a service department that was going to be good at only one thing. Assembling the bikes that are sold. The above is completely inaccurate. I came in to fine tune my Motobecane Road Bike. I expected to drop it off and hopefully pick it up later in the week. The mechanic immediately came to the desk. Put the bike in the stand. And within 15 minutes assessed the bike. Another 15 and I've purchased a fine functioning bike with a new cable. ( back derallieur cable 50% frayed. ). All the employees seemed sincere about customer needs. Sadly, there are fewer and fewer bike shops. I do think Mikes Bikes is one of those shops that deserves your business. read more

I am new to the bike world and did not find them very helpful. Went to their tent out back to ask for help with buying a bike and they didn't have any to try out but they did recommend two bikes from their website without really explaining why or giving me details. I asked if I should just get a kids bike because im super short and they were like nah and the explanation was because they make "adult bikes" for people my size (didn't even give a size recommendation). Then I went home and forgot the names of the bikes lol. Fast forward a few days,did buy a bike (not from their site) and brought it in to make sure its safe to ride (as recommended by the manual). Wish they told me upfront it would cost $20 to JUST get it looked at. I naively thought they could just take a look and then tell me what needs to be fixed/what they plan to do for what amount. I thought wrong..they brought the bike back in 5 min and asked for $20 without saying anything about what they did. ( I doubt much since I assembled it 20 hrs ago) At least I got my tires pumped. I do realize in retrospect that them looking at my bike itself is considered a service but wish they had just told me the price beforehand. Maybe I am missing some type of etiquette, or maybe im just stupid but I was expecting both experiences to be more helpful and that I would come out learning at least something. But I do really appreciate them being open during the pandemic. Will definitely update my review and ratings if my experiences improve.. read more

I ordered a new rim and tire and we made an appointment. 1. They postponed it but didn't tell me until I arrived at the shop. So I had to leave the bike. 2. They only installed the rim but put the old tire back on. If I wanted a new tire I would have to wait again. 3. The frame and fender had lots of grease they didn't bother to clean off 4. They didn't even bother to inflate the tube enough to ride. My fault for going to a chain, they do not care about doing a good job. Stick with your local shop. read more

I rarely leave 1 star reviews because I believe in karma. But I had an interesting experience today that I felt should be noted. I would like to preface my review by stating that I have previously spent $1300 on a custom bike at this very location. At one point, I even paid for them to pack up my bike ($100+) to ship to my law school and then pay to have them reassemble it when I moved back to the bay ($100+). So, here it goes. I arrive around 4:20-4:30 to look at a bike for my partner's birthday. I asked whether the showroom was open and the young man behind the stand in the parking lot told me it was, but that they didn't "have anything there." I said okay, but peeked inside and clearly saw that there were several bikes in the showroom. So I asked him what he meant by the statement that they "didn't have anything there" and he clarified that what was available were the bikes that were $1000+, the high end bikes and the electric bikes. He reiterated that there was nothing in there, but would allow me to "do a lap if I really wanted to." Please keep in mind that I hadn't even described to him what my criteria was, nor what my budget was. However, for some reason, I found myself explaining my presence at the store by mentioning the price of the bike I had purchased from them in the past and that my budget was between 500-600. Either way, I thanked him for his time, asked him for any recommendations (he didn't have any but asked me to call back sometime in the future to figure out what their inventory was) and I walked away. I then drove down the block to REI and ended up spending $1100 on an awesome bike that had everything I needed. As a plus, the customer service was amazing. I'm not sure what made me feel more discriminated - the fact that I was brown, the fact that I was a woman, or the fact that I was wearing my "3-days before Christmas and working from home since March" outfit. I was there to spend money and I walked away feeling like me and/or my money wasn't good enough for Mike's Bikes. Hopes this helps someone in the future. read more

The general manager of this store made me come all the way to the store to send me back without service! They worked on my bike before got paid but the same issue was not fully fixed they refused to fix their lousy service claiming it's new policy that they don't work on other ebikes! read more

Here is my experience with Mike's Bike and some details... PROS: 1. They have bikes and bikes parts and Bike accessories. 2. They staff is very knowledgeable on bikes and bikes related stuff. 3. They offer bike maintenance for $$$ to those that have no idea how a bike works! 4. They are better than car salesmen when it comes to "add on" accessories sales. CONS: 1. They over charge on everything, I am surprised there no ticket for admission into their store. 2. They will sell what is in their store only, they will NOT sell you a better option, they will NOT assist you in locating other possible makes or models of stuff they do not carry. 3. The charge a Sh** load of money for repackage cleaning agents/stuff that you can get a your local Wal**** for the pennies on the dollar. So in conclusion, go to them! If you any no clue how a bike works, functions, rolls, etc (example - a gentlemen with 3K Specialized Bike, asking about several function about his bike, if you can afford to pay 3K for bike, you better know how it works)... They will provide service for some good amount of boo koo bucks, plus work in the extra sale on maintenance, accessories, lubes, the list goes on. My experience, I have been over charged (for parts I need that day vs buying them on line) by them all the time, it's probably in their SOP (Standard Operating Procedure), good day! read more

These guys are great. They're open during the shelter in place order because transportation is essential (of course) but they're doing a great job of making it as safe as possible to get your bike serviced or even buy new gear. They've set up a tent in the parking lot in back so there's no need to crowd around anyone. Their workers are wearing gloves. If you need something from the store, you ask for it and they go get it for you. And they did a fine job of putting really simple stuff which completely stumped me on my Elliptigo SUB and adjusted my (pretty standard) brakes all for $20. I'm pretty stoked to have a great bike shop walking distance from me. read more

I know nothing about bike maintenance If you answered true to both of these questions then congrats Mike's is for you! But if you answered false to either, then I recommend taking your business elsewhere. Here's my story: Called, got a quote estimated at $200-250 for repairs Arrived at the store and the mechanic happily took the bike and said they'd text with a final quote Good experience so far Received the quote via text for $660. What. I asked about parts and services that were not obviously needed, nor discussed prior Specifically the replacement of $85 in parts that were worn but certainly not broken A dismissive response followed, claiming that removing those parts would bring the quote to $622 You do the math This made me uncomfortable Two days pass with continued poor communication about getting a final quote without the extraneous parts and services Eventually no response Worried, I walked over to the store to talk to someone in person The tech manager was called over immediately as I explained my concern about the quote Quickly backpedaling, many parts and services were changed and cut down to what was necessary to fix the bike Final quote for the work that needed to be done, $220-260, as originally expected. Great. The manager was very friendly and helpful I probably would be too if I knew one of my employees tried to charge a customer 3X the necessary cost of repairs I'm not saying they tried to scam me, but with that many add-ons you might be thinking it I wish I could say their craftsmanship makes up for this, but no Eventually the repairs were made and I went to pick up the bike I inspected the bike before leaving and noticed the front crank arm was loose, having had to be removed to do repairs Two bolts that secure the arm were not tightened, this is negligent and potentially dangerous Imagine the lug nuts securing your car's tires being loose, an accident waiting to happen Thankfully I caught the issue and they were happy to fix it I guess you get what you pay for read more

I rarely write reviews but I have to give a big shout out to the team at Mike's Bikes in Los Gatos. I was on my way to the demonstration forest in the Santa Cruz mountains and realize a part had fallen off my front wheel. They scrambled around to fine a spare part but couldn't find the exact fit. So the manager, Robbie Munoz and the head tech, Mark Howard decided to pull the part off of a new bike so that I could make my ride! Very creative and way beyond the normal call of duty. I decided to get a bike during the covid-19 outbreak as my gym is not an option. I was surprised at bike costs in the day and age. Sure, you could go to Walmart and get one for $99 - but like anything else at Walmart - it's junk. After a little research, and a pinch of resolve to spend more than I expected, I'm happy with my new bike. In fact, today, a week later, I'm buying another for my partner. Worst service department experience ever! They told me that they would rebuild my Fox/Specialized rear shock and RockShox front forks. After dropping them off, they told me only Specialized could rebuild the shock and put in an RMA with Specialized Service Department. 3.5 weeks later I am told Specialized refused to do the work, after telling Mike's they would do it. Not Mike's fault, but still a poor business practice. With the front forks, the General Service Manager told me they would do an inspection and service and call me with an estimate. They never called, after 1.5 weeks I called them. They told me the fork was old, in good shape, but there were no updates or upgrades available. They also told me the forks were rebuilt with new seals and ready for pickup. A week later I picked up the parts, only to find out they never started work on the forks at all! Mike's is very proud that they can text people, so they won't bother their customers, but they never read a single response! Almost a month with my bicycle in parts and not a single ounce of work was performed. Absolutely, horrible customer service! Needless to say, Mike's Bikes and Specialized will not see my business ever again and I have stopped recommending both businesses. read more

I recently purchased a bike at Mike's Bikes. The staff was super welcoming and multiple employees offered to help when I arrived. I came in the store with a specific model so it was easy to find it on the floor. I tried rode two sizes of the model and they gave me a helmet to borrow. The Berkeley Campus is an awesome place to try out your bike, as there is are hills to test out the gears on. You also have the craze of Berkeley city streets to maneuver around as a commuter. A staff member watched me ride back to offer suggestions on the size I should pick. All around a great, friendly experience. You definitely won't get the same customer service at the SF location, so I recommend going to the Berkeley location! read more

I had an extremely disturbing experience earlier this week. Since buying a bike and returning several times to purchase more gear, I've had great encounters with many employees - particularly Tanner. But during my last visit, the white trans woman was blatantly racist towards several people of color. Currently, California has reopened. But when Black people asked this white employee if we could go inside the store to shop, we were adamantly told no. When we asked why, she said, "Because I have a family," implying we presented a threat despite following all CDC safety protocols. Meanwhile, all of us saw white people let into the store without any issues. When I questioned her again, she said some employees felt more comfortable letting people inside. But if that was the case, why wouldn't she just ask us to work with someone else? Instead, we were firmly denied entry - she even pushed a Latinx man back from entering the store. He too grew highly upset. When I expressed my concern, she gave the most inauthentic apology and without hesitation, began helping another white customer as if our concerns deserved only a fleeting span of her attention. At no point did she make an effort to resolve our problem. I will never return. read more

I used to live in the Bay Area but don't at the moment, though I still store my bike there with friends. I was back in town for some meetings and as I was furiously biking through the East Bay, trying to stay on time, my chain snapped - probably because it was rusty from disuse. I had a moment of panic as I needed to be able to ride my bike to get everywhere on time but then remembered I was near Mike's Bikes, where I used to go when I lived there. It was in a new location but I found it quickly and I brought my bike in. I went back to the service counter and told them what happened, how rushed I was, and that I knew they were busy and that I didn't have an appointment. But the guy who talked to me assured me that it was okay, and that he could pop a new chain on for me right away. I was in and out in about ten minutes, and back on schedule. I am so grateful to the guy who helped me but sadly never thought to ask his name. But dude, you're a pro, thank you so much! read more

I just wanted to update this review to further explain how much I love Mike's bikes. I ride my bikes really hard so I'm constantly coming in for repairs and they always get to my bikes as quickly as they can given the time frame it takes for parts to come in and they are just incredibly helpful! Yesterday I came in With a rear tire that wouldn't hold air and Sam fixed it for me while I went and got lunch and then was able to shred that day as A result which likely wouldn't have happened if I brought it elsewhere because they just don't get to the repairs as quick as Mike's does. Went to change tire, perfect, then got home and it was flat, had to go back and get it redone. Either faulty tube or shoddy work. Was told to come back in 30 mins, came back in 45 and bike was where I left it, not even being worked on. Had to come back again. Wasted an afternoon. Maybe if my bike was expensive they would have treated me better. No apologies nor explanations for having to come back to redo their work. Will seek a more personal bike shop somewhere else. Some people there were super friendly, but the overall experience was well below my expectations. read more
