I'm a working pro and recently moved to Colorado and was delighted to see well-stocked camera stores. I generally spend around $5k a year on photo gear for my business. The Mike's location on Colorado Blvd was only 10 minutes from where I live, so I was very excited. However, after my last visit to the store (Aug 2014) I had enough of the odd customer service there. I had made about 7 visits to the store up to that point and purchased something every time. In total I think I spent a little over a grand. What I found odd was that I would never be greeted when I entered the store, and most of the time never acknowledged! The last time I went I had a question on an umbrella holder and found my self searching through a glass case positioned next to the door that contained mono light adapters and expensive wireless remotes and other accessories. I walked over to several sales reps from whom I had purchased items from previously and they nonchalantly signaled that they would be right with me. Thirty minutes later still no assistance a per usual. By this time I had emptied the contents of the "secure glass case" by the door, and found the item I needed with a little research on the web with my phone. I then re-packed the glass case and secured the doors. To my amazement not one of the 5 reps present that day, of which not all were NOT that busy even looked in my direction. This would literally happen every time I went to that store and this time I decided it would be the last. I politely walked up to the counter, excused myself with the weekend amateur that was being assisted with his battery selection, and let them know how I felt. After getting very blank looks from the staff (as if the problem was with me) the new guy Chris stepped up and asked me how things could be made right. He took my number and researched one of the parts I was unable to find and called me back a couple of days later with the details. But this was too little too late quite frankly. The odd thing is that this store has knowledgeable reps who once they begin helping you will give good service. The young man in the back Sebastian being one of them, he tries very hard to help. But from my experience, getting assistance in the first place, or even just an acknowledgement was difficult and frustrating. It was like I was invisible every time I went in there. From my perspective the location is lacking customer relationship management, they don't even use their CRM system to put your name in the computer when you make a purchase. This says volumes about how an organization thinks of its customers if it has the resources but makes no effort to capture the needs and trends of its customers. I know this because I promptly picked up the phone and called Mike Dobson the GM of the company and told him about my experience. He admitted that every sale should be rung up under the customer's name. Every time I went there I had to beg them to first enter and then find my name on the computer. I don't want to have to keep receipts etc. Anyway, I refuse to spend anymore of my hard-earned money at this location. In all fairness I have not tried any other Mike's location. Instead I took my business to Englewood Camera (a long drive) where they were most delightful to deal with. read more

My husband and I went to Mike's Camera to find out about photo coffee mugs for holiday gifts. So much has changed, and I would have been totally lost had it not been for Clayton's direction and assistance. He was outstanding in his customer service, and I cannot begin to say how much time he saved us! I learned so much about this new process, and now I've a personal logon so that I can go into the store and sit at the self serve kiosk and use all the tools that are offered. Directions are clear and concise, but had it not been for Clayton, I would still be there 2 hours later. He is extraordinarily patient, and an excellent teacher. Here's the thing about Mike's...they cater to every level of photographic expertise. Everyone from the point and shoot neophyte, to the working pro feels right at home here. I'm what the photo industry calls a "prosumer". That is, I'm a really, really, really serious amateur. I've had some formal training and many years of independent study and experience. If I had the ambition I could probably earn a pretty fair living at it. Mike's has been my go to camera shop for so long I can't remember when I started. If they'd price match the on line equipment sources they'd get a lot more of my money than they do. But, when I really need something and can't wait for an on line order, they are always able to take care of me for a reasonable, if not particularly frugal price. read more

I have been in here multiple times and EVERY time workers go out of their way to help me, take their time with my questions and give me great, genuine advice. I always leave this place in awe of how considerate and helpful every worker is. I will continue coming here for camera equipment and assistance for as long as I live! I was standing at the counter with my cousin waiting to be helped, pretty much just waiting patiently while one of the sale person was putting stuff away, he glanced up didn't say a word.... A customer walks up, hi! What can I help u with?....WTF!! Whatever!! Ok turn to another guy.. Also putting stuff away...3-5 mins later.. EXCUSE MEEEE.. finally!! I went in on the recommendation of a client who is a professional photographer. The folks there have all been very helpful and patient with me. They make real-life suggestions that help when I need it and don't treat me like a novice (which I am). Good service at time of purchase, and follow-up and have had photos "developed" (from digital media) and they did a great job at a very fair price. Jennifer and Tom have won my business and I consult with them for even items they don't supply. There is a sign in there about guaranteeing to match prices, etc. I came in for a camera battery and there were 3 employees standing behind the counter. When one checked the price and said $50, I said Radio Shack has it for $45. Snarky said "That sounds like a good deal. " I couldn't believe how rude he was and the others said nothing. So I just want to share one of the BEST customer service experiences I've EVER had. With trips to Switzerland and India coming up, I wanted to step-up my photography game. Having primarily used my iPad and iPhone for taking photos on the go, I really want to capture the best photos I can while seeing iconic places like the Taj Mahal and the Swiss alps. I've done some research and found the exact camera that I want, as it is a bundle and is currently on sale for the holiday season. Both Costco and Mike's have this particular Nikon for the same price. I would typically shop at Costco for their easy return policy and warehouse pricing, but the individual service lacks, as well as the staff's knowledge of the products. I went in to Mike's this evening on Colorado Blvd/Exposition and was quickly greeted by Jonathan. I told him that I was new to photography and had a specific camera in mind, but would be open to learning about the features that other Nikon cameras have to offer, he was AWESOME! Jonathan brought out a couple of different models to compare side-by-side to help me choose the best option for me, a novice in photography, and answered every question I had (some of which were probably silly, but he never made me feel dumb) throughly and effectively. What is even better, is that Mike's offers classes when you purchase a camera from them, so I will have been introduced to the features of my new Nikon before I set out on my around the world journey in February. Jonathan was very upbeat and friendly, which made me even more pleased to hear that he will be the one that gives the classes on the Nikon digital SLR cameras. Tonight's experience was one that I didn't expect, in a time of year-end pushes for businesses to make as many sales as possible, the experience at Mike's was very relaxed. I never once felt pressured to buy, and the friendliness of Jonathan that clearly demonstrates that photography is not just a job, it's his passion. After just one experience, I am a customer for life. I very much look forward to the classes to teach me how to use my new camera, and am very grateful for the service I received. As slimy as they come, and certainly not competitive in price by a long shot either. The only thing they're worried about here is making the sale and getting their commission. If they don't think you're ready to spend after a minute of analyzing you, you're on your own there. And if you do buy stuff there, good luck getting any sort of help with your purchase if it should break. I just purchased a camera from Mike's camera on Colorado Boulevard. This is one of the most positive experiences in a store I've had in ages. Timothy was fabulous! The camera I wanted was not in the store - so he searched and found it at another location then had it delivered to the Colorado Blvd store. When it didn't arrive the day it was promised, he personally make sure it was there the next day. When I went to pick it up, he spent at least an hour with me making sure I understood the basic operations and put camera together for me. He showed me accessories that I might be interested in, but there was NO pressure to purchase any or all of them. His knowledge of cameras and photography was more than helpful in my making the decision of which camera to get. In addition, Jennifer (the manager), was friendly helpful and informative. On top of that, the price of the camera beat Amazon's price (or any other on line camera site). While I was there and Timothy was helping me, other people were waiting. Timothy took the time to briefly inform the waiting customers that someone would be with them shortly. He did not ignore them or take any time away from assisting me. If I could give Mike's camera on Colorado Boulevard 10 STARS I would! I do a great deal of my shopping online, but I am so glad I went to Mike's camera. I feel like I have found a location and a person who can help me as I move forward with my photography. read more

I've had several unsatisfactory experiences with their printing services. If you want anything out of the ordinary such as metal, canvas or panoramic prints or film development (outside of 4x6) expect to wait over a week. These orders are shipped to the Boulder store and then back. I have been told that prints would be ready on a certain day and I go to pick them up only to find that they are more than 5 days from being ready. No one calls to let me know or asks what I want to do when there is an issue with the order. The staff seems pretty rude and short with customers at times and also not knowledgeable about services. I like Mikes Camera in general and went to the Boulder store a lot when I lived there but not sure about these Denver Locations. read more

I was new to town and came here because I had a black spot on my lens that I couldn't remove. A guy named Tim took my camera, cleaned it in about 10 minutes, and the spot was gone! I asked how much and he said it was on the house. I thought that was a really nice gesture and they will be getting my business back in the future! That's right, 1 star but they deserve zero stars....This store has horrible customer service! I called down to this store because I live an hour away and could not waste any time spending the minimum 2 hours it would take to drive down there and back. The guy who answered the phone was so rude and not helpful I could hardly believe it. When I asked a few questions to make sure what I wanted was there, he simply replied, "if it doesn't say anything on the website then I don't know and you should just drive down here to figure it out. " Really? After I told him it is an hour's drive down there? I almost asked to speak to the manager, but decided I would just let everyone know how horrible this place is and I would never buy anything from them EVER. I actually had a really great experience, i needed a filter for my prime lens, and the staff helped me pick the right one and explained how it works, and where i can go to service my camera. While i was looking at the gear, couple of sale staff came up offering help. It was nice, because i was in a hurry for a shoot and needed my supplies ASAP. Duane, one of the employees there, not only helped me print a terrific print, but fit it exactly into an already existing matte frame *and* took apart the frame and reassembled it while I was there, way out of the scope of what he needed to do and with no charge. The print itself is beautiful too. They cater to the customer and make sure the prints look good - that's very refreshing in a Target / Walgreens world. read more

I'm giving Mikes Camera 1 star today. After driving from Denver to pick up a lens I called to set aside for today, I was told upon arriving that they wouldn't take my husbands debit card because he wasn't present. I realize this may be policy, but the manager was extremely rude and condescending while asking him to make an exception for my case. (We just had to cancel every credit card we have due to fraudulent charges that were made on them last week). I had no card with my name but did have my husbands as well as forms of ID's of myself. I even called my husband to have him give them the okay to use his card. The manager wouldn't even speak to my husband. I've never been turned away for doing this in the past from any other retailer etc. I'm supposed to shoot a family this evening and I'm without a lens and wasted 1.5hrs of drive time/gas. I left frustrated, and had my husband call back to chat with the same manager. My husband spoke with him, caught him in a lie about their policies, and when he called him out on it, the manager hung up on him. I know folks have bad days here and there, but the way we were treated today is inexcusable. We are extremely disappointed with Mikes Camera. On the contrary, Ryan, the rental manager was amazing while speaking with him on the phone to reserve the lens in the first place. Sorry for anyone who has to come into contact with the old crotchety manager today. I will not be giving this location my business in the future. *edited after reply from Mike* I appreciate the response to this review. I do not appreciate how we were treated and will not be doing business with Mikes Camera. My husband and I were both willing to do whatever necessary to work with your manager in order to take the rental to my photo shoot that evening, but instead, we were treated poorly and no one felt it necessary to work with us back. Mocking customers is something you should not be proud of and the photography community in Denver will probably agree. Unfortunately, this situation put me in a bind as well as clients who counted on me. Maybe instead of living on a power trip, your manager could practice compassion and work with customers in a bind (especially after the credit fraud) to work with us instead of insult us. We were willing, you were not. I have already shared my poor experience with your company to my photographer friends and THANKFULLY was able to borrow lenses to shoot my clients that evening but I sure was scrambled and frazzled after this fiasco. After reading all the negative reviews I was rather hesitant to go to mikes but given the long standing reputation I rolled the dice. I was very surprised given the negative reviews. WOW! For a photography novice but big photo taker and about to head on a Safari for the first time, I turned to the amazing team at Mike's Camera to help with what I would need. I've bought 3 digital cameras there over the years, just the little point and shoot ones, but now knew I needed something far more professional for my Game Drive experiences. I went in to find out what was involved in buying a high end camera and to see how much it would set me back. They were so kind in that they showed me a more affordable option given my temporary needs - renting! They trained me on and rented me a Nikon D90 with a 70-300 zoom lense and I have to say it was a seamless process! I was really stressing about what I would do about this portion of my trip, and Mikes made it an easy, stress free, 30 minute process! The Nikon D90 was SO easy to use, and the photos are so sharp - they look professional....if I do say so myself! Thanks for coming to my rescue Jennifer and team Mike's.....My photos came out AMAZING as you'll see when I upload to get many printed and blown up for amazing shots of the wildlife in Africa. I was in your store on Thursday wanting to purchase a camera for my son. I knew he wanted either a Canon or a Nikon. I was greeted (term used lightly) by Josh Olsen. He asked me what I was looking for and I told him either brands for around $1000.00 He very begrudingly showed me two cameras. The Cannon T5i and the Nikon D5200. He bothered to tell me anything about the cameras..and why one might be preferred over the other. What features they had; how to use it, or even allow me to actually try one. I was there only about 15 minutes for a visit that I expected to last much longer with lots of details given. He didn't even look me in the eyes when talking to me. He kept looking at the front door as if someone of importance, say the President, was about to arrive. I may not have been dressed like I have $$$..but I had $1000 or more just in cash so I could purchase one that day at the closest camera store to my home. Lost one sale and probably a few others too! He looked at the camera, talked to me about my usage and then recommended and actually put together all the audio and ancillary equipment I would need, keeping it within a price range that made sense for my usage. Wow, serious customer service issues. I called and asked to place a rental for a job in Denver I'm flying to this week. Since the gig is a 12 hour day on Wednesday, and their store is not open for 12 hours, I would need to pick up gear the evening before (Tuesday after 5pm) and drop it off the morning after (Thursday before 10am). Since a standard workday on a film set is 12 hours, every single professional film rental house I've ever used would consider this a 1-day rental. When RYAN told me this rental would be a 2-day charge, I was shocked. I wanted to double check and clarified that if I'm only using the gear on Wednesday, would it still be a two day charge? In a patronizing tone, he snarked "of course...if you have our gear for more than one day, we have to charge you for more than one day". I told him I've never experienced that from another rental house. He said "Well, that's unfortunate". I said "yes, it is" and from there his attitude got even worse with every remaining question. If someone is inquiring into your services and simply asking questions about additional charges, it seems counterproductive to be condescending on the phone, especially when every other professional rental house (in Los Angeles, NYC, or elsewhere) has a different policy. Even still, I tried to give this man my business, but every time I asked about equipment on my wish list, his tone sounded like an annoyed adolescent boy; "Ugh, I already told you that was out of stock" (no you didn't, you told me the other lens was out of stock), etc etc. Do you want my money or not? I'm literally trying to give you my credit card information so you can take my money. Be nice. Some of the gear I needed was out of stock, so I said I might have to shop elsewhere for this particular job. At the very end of our conversation, I thanked him for his time and effort, which seemed to annoy him further. Dude must have missed his lunch break. I went straight to MP&E (also in Denver) and they helped me with haste and enthusiasm (charging me only for a 1 day rental too). I told them about Mike's and the agent just laughed at their policy. If you are looking for quality prints and great service-do not go to the Colorado store!! This is the 2nd time I have had horrible prints from Mike's. I thought I would give them another chance since I do like that I can go in to pick up my photos. This will be the last time I purchase from any Mike's camera store. Several times I have had different photo projects and the last 2 visits I was cheated out of my photos. I literally have to throw away my prints. I ordered an 11x14 photo and half the photo is white. where's my photo???? I can't even frame this crap! The other project I had an uneven photo that was on a styrofoam board. How can you think it's okay to sell low quality products?? I am very furious and plan on never going back. read more

I LOVE Mike's Camera on Colorado Blvd! I went in a couple of years ago, knowing nothing about cameras. I wanted a nice Canon. I was lucky to have the manager wait on me. Jennifer helped me find the perfect camera and lens and accessories! And believe me, that was no easy task...I had about a million questions. Once I'd made my decision she spent time teaching me how to use it. I wasnt ready for the settings, so pretty much stuck to the auto setting. Fast forward two years...I recently decided that I was ready to learn more about using my camera so I returned and asked for help. I was referred to Tim, the Canon expert. He was amazing! He was an excellent teacher, patient and kind. I didn't catch on easily, but with perseverance he did it! I'm heading to Europe with a wealth of knowledge this time and can't wait to start photographing with my new skills! I have gone by the store during the two years anytime I needed any help and everyone was always ready to help me, lots of experts in one place! I have also had printing done there and love the results! I can't say enough about the staff at this store, especially Jennifer and Tim. I highly recommend them for everything! I visited this store to purchase an additional battery for my camera. Unfortunately, it seemed the store did not have the Nikon battery in stock. One of the sales reps, Josh, overheard me talking about my dilemma and went out of his way to find the battery I needed. In addition, the Assistant Store Manager, Michael Scialfo, got involved and provided a superior level of customer service that is very rare in most retail stores these days.
