Mike's is a perfect hidden gem. I know a lot of students who come here for the HUGE donairs (definitely worth your money). For my friends and I, we come here for the awesome fries. They're so crispy and the perfect amount of saltiness. Personal recommendations: mixed poutine - it has chicken, donair meat, gravy, cheese curds, and tzatziki sauce (make sure you ask for extra tzatziki sauce to balance the saltiness of the gravy and fries) jumbo donair - so good! Keep in mind you probably won't be able to finish it Okay, that's all I can think about because I just come here for the fries and the poutine. Literally just order a large fries and sit here with your friends talking about life. These fries are so much better than McDonald's, in my opinion. I recommend eating at the place for optimum crispiness of the fries. Cause the steam from the fries being trapped in the container kinda kills the loveliness. The portions are getting smaller though :( The employees here are relatively friendly and the ambiance is pretty chill. They play pop music and the renos they've been doing this past year has made this place a lot more comfier. This is a great date place or a hangout place for friends. They don't even deserve one star. I ordered the mozzarella sticks and was severely disappointed. They were actually all stuck together like they'd been chipped from the bottom of the freezer and over microwaved until they were one terrifying blob of nasty breading and overcooked ... I'm not sure if I'd call it... cheese. Also had some poutine my wife had ordered. I'm still getting the film from that sad excuse for gravy out of my mouth. The fries were also quite yucky. Food was terrible. I went there at 2:15 am on October 1, to grab take out food on the way home to Sherwood Park. The restaurant was packed and incredibly noisy as the bars were letting out. There was a line-up. Two staff taking orders at the cash were going as fast as they could. Also, the two staff preparing the food orders were going as fast as they could. I saw at least one other staffer on the floor who was trying to clean tables as quickly as he could. I ordered a Jumbo Chicken Donair and an order of onion rings. The order was ready in a few minutes. I started to eat the onion rings in my truck on the way home. They were awful. They tasted like deep fried "frozen-crap-in-a-box" that some restaurants serve. The bread coating was tasteless. When I got home, the Jumbo Chicken Donair was awful. The chicken pieces were rock hard. It seemed like the chicken was left to dry out on the machine that turns and browns the chicken. The person preparing the food must have noticed that. Not fit to eat. At least the pita bread and the lettuce, pickle, etc. in the donair were fresh. I realize how hard it is to run a restaurant. However, I will go back to Mike's another day and tell them about the bad experience. Maybe all the other food items on the menu are fine and I just ordered the wrong stuff but that is my last visit. Mike's Famous has lost me as a customer. I hope my feedback helps to improve the food. read more

Not...Bad... Firstly. This is the biggest..and fanciest donair shop I have been in. It's huge. The front area is a normal shop size...but then I discovered the back area. Complete with a second service area which looks like a hooka bar, and some pretty ritzy washrooms. With a shop like this...in a location like this...the donair has to be amazing... Doesn't it? It should be... But it's not. It's...ok...and that's disappointing. Had a jumbo with sweet sauce and tried a cup of their garlic sauce on the side. Seeving size...good. Pita...fresh. Veggies...pretty fresh...but half fell off. Some pieces felt like a whole head of lettuce. Meat...juicy....but not as flavorful as it should be. Sweet sauce...well...it was simming in this stuff. It certainly didn't all run to the bottom. But given how much there was...it just didn't lend as much flavour as it should have. Due to volume of sauce...this thing just fell apart. One of the biggest messes I've partaken in. And nit just the obligatory "puddle in the bottom if the bag". I certainly had to wash up when done! Garlic sauce was actually my favorite part. In summary... The store is very impressive. Washrooms had a night club feel. But the food...that must sustain this glitzy establishment...was lacluster. Not at all bad...but not outstanding either. If it were my local shop...I'd give them a second chance. But they are not my local shop...and I'll not go out of my way to offer that second chance. Plenty of fish in this...market. read more

Down on whyte ave in old strathcona. This place used to be a big open-air burger place yrs ago but now it's more enclosed although they leave part of it open. They have renovated since last i was here and put a new sign up. It's very big inside and well furnished with a lot of tv's so you can watch sports while eating or drinking. I had the donaire both times i was here lately and they are very good and the fries are nice as well. Good place to eat donaires. I;ll have to try the burger next time. read more

QUESTION: What's big, greasy and is usually not what you ordered? ANSWER: Anything from this place. I've been to to ol' Mike's a few times - even back when it was called Marco's. I can tell you confidently that not ONCE did I ever get what I ordered. Adding to the conundrum is that my friends and I were the only people in the place, so it's not like they had 50 orders to mentally track. You order a cheeseburger? BOOM, donair for you! You order a bacon burger!? BOOM!! Cheese burger for you! You order a pizza burger!? BOOM! A WILD FISH AND CHIPS APPEARS! But if you ordered a heart attack, BOOM - you'll get exactly what you ordered. Everything here comes pre-served with a layer of grease that looks like it was lifted from a 13 year olds' face. If you're completely hammered this might constitute a meal worth your time. If you're sober and you actually want what you paid for, it's not real high on my list. read more

This place is slammed on the weekends with people who are just leaving the club. They really capitalize on the drunks who are craving grease. I have eaten here sober and I didn't enjoy it. The donairs don't really taste that great, the meat is soft and the sauce is plain. The rest of the menu consists of fillers like fries or burgers that you will find on any donair menu. I went to Whyte ave a week ago to check out Pawnshop Live but it was closed. So I decided to have lunch instead and Mike's Famous was right across the street. I had a regular donair and it was definitely big enough even though they have 2 larger sizes. The donair had a lot of meat, decent flavour and was wrapped well so it wouldn't drip all over the place. They even had a plastic bag to ensure that it wouldn't leak. The food was probably a 3 star but everything else brought it down to 2 stars. There was only 1 employee that took your order and payment then made the food. This makes for a longer wait. Also the tables weren't very clean probably because there was only one person working. They did have 2 flatscreen TV's which were on sports so I was able to watch while I ate. I guess that's the good thing... read more

Marco's is a fast and reasonably cheap way to satisfy any cravings for greasy, heavy food while on Whyte Avenue. The burgers are huge, fries plentiful, and the donair is delicious - donair meat is typically ground and seasoned beef, so don't freak out Jennifer! I have also enjoyed milkshakes here, as well as chicken fingers, falafel, and other kinds of wraps, burgers, and finger foods. Service is fast, the food is consistent in its value and portion size. This is not one of my favorite donair places in the city. The food is OK. Their donairs are typical. Nothing special to report. They have good french fries though. Other than that, they have a typical shop menu with a few extras. The staff is OK. They aren't the friendliest but they aren't rude. That's all I have to say about that. read more

A friend and I came over for some food after having a few drinks somewhere else and found it to be a pretty decent experience. The dining area was immaculately clean and they have two televisions to occupy you if you happen to wander in alone. The food options here pretty much boil down to burgers,fries,donairs and a few other random things. My friend really enjoyed his burger and fries and didn't have any issues with grease like alot of the other reviews here mention. I found my donair to be good as well. The sweet sauce they use is nice because it is not too heavy but I found they did skimp out a little bit on the vegetables. The one thing I really didn't like was the fact the large storefront entrance was open making the dining area chilly as it was later at night. It also seemed to kind of beckon out to some of Whyte Ave's more eclectic residents as shortly after sitting down we got a visit from a gentleman in a poncho carrying what looked like a bible preaching to us about the oncoming galactic wormhole. Mid day eats with my little girl. Ordered: Greek salad, veggie burger, fries, water I've never experienced this before but the fries were completely COLD. The server forgot our water. The burger.....my daughter tried to bite into it and physically couldn't. I thought she was just being silly. I took the burger out of the bun and it was ROCK HARD! Absolutely NO exaggeration! Like, inedible, rock hard! I showed it to the "chef" as I repeatedly tried to stab it with my knife, only to have the knife bounce off it each time. This is not even food. I was at Chapters Whyte Avenue the night of the first 2012 Presidential Debate getting the newest SC book "America Again: Re-Becoming The Greatness We Never Weren't" (LOL) that just came out after running a crucial errand before on the Ave. After spending much time in Chapters/Starbucks and finally buying the SC book and some other non-book goodies it was well past dinner so before heading home I decided to stop at Mike's Famous which is down the block just a few doors. Many a time I've passed it by bus and thought it looked worth trying (I mean, they were showy enough to use the word Famous in the name! - surely it must be good!). Also, the big sliding doors seemed welcoming. Those doors were not open (it was about 8:00pm) so I headed in behind a single male though the single door. There was only one other customer there when we got there. Nobody else came in. It was a Wednesday. Combined w/ the time (evening) take that for what you will. There were two "staff". One young guy of "typical Donair shop nationality" - Greek or Lebanese - & one chubby older white guy who gave off a customer/staff hybrid vibe. I asked c.o.w.g. if he worked there. He said "sort of". Ok then! LOL. He was nice enough but wtf does "sort of" work there mean? So, I "attempt" to sit down to take a look at the menu behind the counter. I say attempt not because it was busy, which of course it wasn't, but b/c the seats & booths were fixed. The "attempt" was ultimately successful but it was a tight squeeze. Now I know I'd definitely be considered obese, but really! Food places ought to try to make it easy for customers to get into a seat. Fat (even obese) customers aren't a rarity in a super-sized world so unbolt the chairs from the floor for God's sake. Afraid they'll be stolen? As I sit down the table does not look dirty (none of them did) yet there were three or four flies all sitting on my table. So it must have had something on it. I have a fierce love of squashing the daylights out of any unfortunate fly that should piss around in my vicinity. So out of my bag came the new SC book and "FWOMP" went said book onto the closest one of those little bastards! Success! Almost immediately c.o.w.g. came over from out of nowhere (guess he heard my newest purchase create the massive "FWOMP" sound. He didn't hesitate a second to tell me (while tactfully avoiding mention of said fly) he would get the table cleaned. Reasonably soon after the actual staff member came to clean the table (with a spray bottle!). There were no more "visitors" to my table after that. I mention this partly because someone else in another review of Mike's (only city, only location) said that there were a bunch of ants in the restaurant when he was there. So despite not looking especially dirty or grubby (I can have sort of low standards - I used to eat at the Motoraunt) so take that for what you will also. I debated leaving but since a) I hadn't read the "ant's review" beforehand, b) it basically looked clean and most of all, c) they were good about cleaning it quickly, and even more importantly, cleaning it thoroughly, I decided that their efforts deserved my sticking around to give it a try. So what -to- try. The menu seems reasonably big. Nevertheless, I decided it was going to be a donair. That is I decided after I asked the million dollar question, ie. "Is there Tzatzki sauce?" I call this the million dollar question since some places (Queen Donair!) actually only have that awful "sweet sauce". Bleech. Turns out, like another place I got a donair at recently (right across the street from Queen-the old Cafe Moonlight), they also have a garlic sauce. I found out about garlic sauce for the first time when I went there. I ended up having it because they ran out of Tzatzki. So when Mike's had garlic sauce I thought I'd try it again as many a place makes watery Tzatzki. The menu had something called a "White" Donair as well as the Regular one (w/ Lettuce and Tomatoes) and a Super one (same but bigger) so I chose the oddly named "White" Donair - just the basics that I wanted - Cheese, Sauce, Donair meat. I took it to go and boy am I glad I did. Why? Well, when I got it home (very nicely wrapped) it turned out to be a "Super" too. Super sauced. Seriously so. Nauseatingly so. This astounded me because I love sauce. Often ask for extra. Thank God I didn't here. Try to imagine if you will being someone who loves sauce enough to ask for extra whether it be a donair or extra ketchup, mustard and mayo on a burger and finding that without even asking for more that there is too much! Way too much.I must say that really, really put me off. Not only that but the sauce tasted both sweeter and not as garlicy as I would have liked. So based on this one item only I'd say I wouldn't rush back. Oh, and they didn't even have the debate on. read more

Hubby and I came down here late one night on a whim. He had a burger, and I had a donair. i haven't had a donair in ages, and I'm glad I got one. Y-U-MMMM. I mean, for late night greasy eats, and convenient location for us walkers, it was pretty great. I had a bite of hubby's burger and OMG super yum. And the fries! I love me a great order of fries, and these surpassed it completely. I'm drooling now. And I would definitely go back here again! I no longer live in Edmonton, so when in town (monthly) I always get a donair. Haven't been to Mikes in probably 8 years, my flight arrived late and I needed to eat. Hit whyte and they were open, (my #1 favorite place in town isn't open that late.) The prices seemed a bit high, but when I got my cheese donair, it was probably 50-80% bigger than other shops, which more than made up a few extra dollars in price. I was blown away, it was one of the best donairs I've ever had, I love that they put enough lettuce and tomato on it that you aren't eating entirely meat. Everything was fresh, delicious, and fast. I repeated again a few days ago and my donair was consistently as good. I don't understand the poor reviews, I can't speak for the burgers or chicken, but if you go to this donair shop and eat the donair I don't know how you could possibly be disappointed. In a fit of hunger I've stopped in to Marco's Famous, not my usual kind of fare. It's a quick-stop fast food joint with a few tables and counters, cement floors and it smells like vats of deep-fried free radicals, which, depending on the day, can be the most appealing smell there is! This place has been said to have the best donair in the city. I'm not an aficionado of this mystery meat, in fact, when I looked up "what is a donair?" on Google, Wiki-Answers told me it is "a combination of Arabian desert camel hooves and siberian tiger ears garnished with oregano and basil .... stewed on the earth's mantle and seasoned every 14 days by tribal leaders who sacrifice leaves off a sacred tree called the donairian evergreen"?! Who knows - my rule is, if I can't tell what it is, I don't eat it. I had the falafel - it was good, but greasy, wrapped in tin foil with lots of onions, turnips and secret sweet sauce. Had the cheese donair tonight, I found it to be quite greasy and it kind of left a greasy film in my mouth " YUK" I also found they overstuffed my donair with tons of lettuce and onion. another YUK. I 'm only giving this a 3 star because I'm being generous,,, you know it is Christmas... The place is clean, Sports on the TV for the guys. And the prices are normal to any other place.
