One of the coolest things that I have noticed in recent years has been the evolution and expansion of plant-based restaurants in Edmonton. When you think about "vegetarian fare" this will inevitably conjure images of hippy restaurants that serve one type of food (a bowl of vegetables?). Maybe this was once the case but it certainly isn't anymore. (I think that Padmanadi had a large part to play in this development and that they paved the way for a wider selection of plant-based foods in our city.) Today, you can find restaurants from all cultures that specialize in plant-based cuisine and even pub food and pizza! I support this movement and love constantly being proven that animal products are not necessary to make delicious food. And this is coming from a staunch omnivore who clearly eats everything. Good food is just good food! One of the restaurants that has been making waves in this arena is An Chay, a Vietnamese vegetarian restaurant that has been around since 2017. Their name literally means eat vegetarian! Located in Oliver on Jasper Ave, they are in a prime location to feed bustling downtown folk a different take on Vietnamese cuisine. Avenue Magazine named them Best Plant-Based Restaurant 2020 and I couldn't wait to taste their take on some classic and familiar dishes. As previously mentioned, their location is quite excellent on a prime corner in the center of the city. Inside you'll find a fresh space that is filled with bright windows. I loved the pendant lighting adorning the ceiling that look a bit like lanterns. Some of the tables have very cozy chairs that beckon you to really settle in. I was seated at such a table and enjoyed the casual cafe vibe of it all. Our server was incredibly friendly, delivering plates of food to our table in hardly any time at all. For a beverage I went straight for the Burdock Tea ($2.00) which seemed like the most unique thing to order on the menu apart from the Vietnamese iced coffee. I enjoyed how different this was! This tea was not the typical green-jasmine situation that is normally found at Asian restaurants. I could see the pieces of burdock root steeping in the pot, an ingredient known for its antioxidant properties. The nice earthy flavour was something all its own and very pleasant to drink. The food menu is somewhat concise with only five appetizers and ten entrees to choose from. There is no need for more! I would much prefer that a restaurant does a smaller number of dishes really well, instead of offering way too many without being able to maintain quality. Spring rolls and fresh rolls make key appearances on the appetizer menu, as does a green onion cake (it's the Edmonton way). But I was most excited about the Green Papaya Salad (Green papaya, soy jerky, basil, sriracha sauce, roasted peanuts and fried onions. Served with house soy sauce - $14.00) otherwise known as Goi Du Du. I love a zesty green papaya salad that is full of spice! It would be easy to serve a green papaya salad as a plant-based dish - that's already what it is! But I really liked seeing that An Chay is taking this dish to the next level by using ingredients like soy jerky. I appreciated seeing that they are leaning into what it is that makes their food unique and special. This salad was so fresh and had excellent texture. We poured the house soy sauce over top to kick the flavours up even more. Sweet, savoury, and a hint of spice. I loved the soy jerky most of all because of the wonderful pork floss-like texture. Choosing an entree was easy because the dish that I wanted to try seemed so obvious. It had to be the Vermicelli Special (Vermicelli, tempura, shredded beancurd, spring rolls, shredded lettuce, cucumber, mint leaf, pickled daikon & carrots, red cabbage, roasted peanuts, fried onions. Served with vinaigrette sauce - $17.00) otherwise known as Bun 3 Mau. However, An Chay does offer their own take on pho and their coconut curry sounds wonderful. Plated with an artistic hand, the beauty of this dish with its stunning rainbow of colours was a sight to behold. You eat with your eyes first and this dish couldn't have been more appealing. I poured the tangy vinaigrette over the entire bowl and reveled in the symphony of flavours. I loved the pops of cool freshness from the mint, acidity from the daikon and carrots, and crunch from the peanuts and fried onions. I noticed a delightful coconut flavour that I think was mixed in with the shredded beancurd. One perplexing ingredient was the tempura. I think that "tempura" refers to the pan fried item that looked a bit like SPAM (only it wasn't). I'm not sure what this ingredient was but I loved it (if someone had told me that it was meat I would have believed them). I also absolutely adored the spring rolls (cha gio) because again An Chay took an item that I've had a million times but made it their own. I've been wanting to try this place since they opened and I'm so happy to finally be able to. Their food is super fresh and the quality is great. I tried the curry tofu salad rolls (definitely taste the curry but it's not overpowering) and it comes with a peanut sauce to dip. $9.90 for 4 rolls. The 3 colour bowl for $16.50 has crispy spring rolls, shredded bean curd and what they call tempura, but is similar to a vegetarian sausage. Cones with "fish sauce". Tried this place out about three times now, I have to say this place has legit good tasting vegetarian vietnamese food. I have to admit that I was pretty skeptical in the beginning because I could not picture vegetarian vietnamese food... but it is delicious here. An Chay translates directly to "eat vegetarian" in English. The flavors, the presentation and the blend of different items just works. It also does taste like the real dishes, but just vegetarian style. Since coming to this restaurant I tried the springrolls, green papaya sald, satay noodle soup and also the regular vietnamese noodle soup. The spring rolls were crispy and fried with fresh oil. The "meat" added a great flavour and texture to the overall dish. The "fish" sauce added a kick of spice. I felt content and happy with all of my choices so far since I have been here. This is the first vegetarian Vietnamese restaurant in YEG. I plan on trying some more of their appetizers next time and the vermicelli bowls, which look delicious. I think the only downside I see right now are the portions. We finished the dishes easily and still felt a bit hungry after. Could've gotten a XL pho at any other vietnamese restaurant for around $12 and be full off that. I guess that's the trade off for healthier options, but I do not regret it. A vegan/vegetarian Vietnamese restaurant that's as good as it gets! Came here with a bunch of co-workers, most of whom are not actually vegetarian, but everyone enjoyed their meals. I had vietnamese rice paper rolls with some kind of marinated tofu instead of meat that was absolutely delicious, would not have known it wasn't pork if I hadn't assembled the rolls myself. The servings are generously sized - I could easily have shared my dish with another person, but it was delicious enough that I ate it all myself anyway. They also had an interesting burdock tea I hadn't tried before, which was very refreshing. It's convenient to the downtown area (right near the Structube on Jasper) but still far enough that parking in the evening wasn't a problem, even on a Friday. The only two negatives I can think of is that it closes unusually early at 8pm and isn't open on Tuesdays at all, so double check before you go. And they really don't have much selection in the way of dessert - on the day we went they had only one thing to offer (some kind of strawberry cake) and had run out of every other option. Back in town meant seeing my two favourite vegetarians for food. I'm always skeptical when it comes to pure Vietnamese vegetarian restaurants but we decided to give An Chay a go. It's right next door to Die Pie. We dropped in on a Wednesday evening (around 7:15pm). There was only three other tables occupied while we were there. The inside is very open and you can see straight into the restaurant from all angles. Staff were friendly, prompt and refilled waters frequently. The menu is surprisingly short and sweet. One page with 5 appetizers and 10 entrees. Beauty. We wanted to try the betel leaf wraps but they'd already ran out. - Vietnamese ice coffee ($4.00) - L's never had one before! Strong coffee flavour. - Goi cuon (A2) ($7.00 for four) - marinated curry tofu, vermicelli, cucumber, lettuce, mint leaf, pickled daikon and carrot. It came with a peanut sauce. Curry tofu was flavourful with a hint of heat. Peanut sauce was freshly made and well balanced. - Bun hue (B4) ($15.00) - round noodles, spiced lemongrass broth, fried tofu, lotus root, enoki mushroom and vegan sausage. Broth had good depth and flavour, especially when you consider it's purely vegetarian. Impressed with the aroma and prominence of the lemongrass. My favourite entree of the night. - Hu tieu satay (B7) ($13.00) - flat noodles, satay sauce, fried tofu, bean sprouts, enoki mushroom, cucumber, tomato, basil and roasted peanuts. Broth was good but it could have been even more peanuty. - Com tofu xao xa ot (B8) ($13.00) - marinated tofu, lemongrass, asparagus and brown rice. Tofu was lightly fried but flavourful. Asparagus was an interesting choice along with sliced carrots. Rice was a healthy but small scoop. It's a few dollars more than your typical Vietnamese restaurant but if you're a vegetarian, you'll be in pho heaven. I actually have no idea how long An Chay has been sitting on this little corner of Jasper Ave and 112St and as a restaurant that advertises "Vegetarian Vietnamese Cuisine" it never really registered on my radar. However my partner, who is vegetarian, suggested it as a place to try one day and I am happy to say I was pleasantly surprised. An Chay isn't very big but has a lot of big windows so it provides a lot of natural lighting for a nice meal atmosphere and, as I already stated, it's on the corner of Jasper ave so it also provides a lively people watching experience. We ordered tofu salad rolls to share and then I order their satay soup and my partner got a lemongrass tofu I think. The salad rolls were fresh and came with a peanut sauce. My satay soup was good, not too spicy or too big. It was just what I needed that day to fill belly. I, initially, was a little weary around how the flavour would be seeing as there was no meat in the pho but it was quite tasty. My partner also really enjoyed his tofu dish, which came with "fish sauce" and rice. As someone who doesn't adhere or identify as a vegetarian, An Chay was a pleasant surprise and a place I would definitely revisit with my partner or a friend who wanted to go for Vietnamese cuisine. The food was flavorful and still captured the tastes of Vietnamese food and the atmosphere was very chill and relaxed. Plus their location is fairly ideal and there is street parking. I think my only side note would be that considering it is a vegetarian establishments, I thought prices were a little high - not drastically high or anything but enough for me to notice I suppose. Vietnamese is one of my favourite kinds of cuisine and being a non-pork and seafood eater, vegan works well for me. An Chay is spacious, bright, and has lots of comfortable seating. The menu features spring rolls, soups, and vermicelli bowls, with the twist of everything being plant-based. Tofu and soy is mostly used for the protein. I have been meaning to write a review for this restaurant for a while now. I absolutely loved it! We were greeted by the owner who was super friendly and made us feel at home. The menu has many delicious vegetarian Vietnamese dishes to choose from. My friend and I shared the Vermicelli Special and the Coconut Curry dish to share. Both were equally delicious! Lots of flavour, very filling and you can taste the 'homemade' comfort in love in each bite. I even enjoyed the 'fish' sauce which I normally dislike but I am assuming it was a take on fish sauce as this is a vegetarian restaurant. Not sure what the ingredients were but it alone had me convinced to come back ;-). All in all, if you like vegetarian and Vietnamese food, you should definitely check it out. It is worth your time and very reasonably priced. My only complaint is that they are not open past 8pm on the weekends which doesn't leave a lot of time for dinner if you like to eat later in the evening. I am looking forward to my next visit. No only is An Chay is one of my favourite vegetarian restaurants, it's one of my favourite restaurants in Edmonton. I have eaten in and ordered takeout multiple times. My absolute favourite dish is the sweet and sour soup. I'm not usually a big soup person but the pineapple broth they use for this one is something special. I prefer it with the vermicelli but I'm sure it would be great with brown rice as well. No matter what entree you pick though, you must order the fresh tofu rolls to start off your meal. These are by far the best vegetarian rolls I've ever have. I love how flavourful the tofu is and the peanut sauce has a real kick to it. The service is very prompt and friendly and the food always seems to come out quite fast as well. If you're looking for a vegetarian restaurant downtown, this is a really good option. They have the option of ordering takeout which is what I did with a few coworkers and they also give you an accurate time estimate for when your pickup order will be ready. There is street parking available and it is right beside the Edmonton General Continuing Care Hospital. The space has a lot of windows for bright natural lighting, which is great for people watching too. They even have a bench near the cashier if you ever end up waiting to pickup food. There are high chairs available & washrooms are here too. As soon as I entered, I was immediately welcomed & offered a table and menu. My order was already waiting for pickup & the man who helped was very friendly and well organised, each order was labelled to match the soups we ordered, so there would be no confusion once we started opening up the takeout bags. I like how the broth is poured in the container & then bagged...it's just less messy for me, rather than how some places bag the broth, then put it in the container. The presentation of food was also well done, considering it was takeout. I ordered the satay soup upon coworkers recommendations, and although it tasted good for being vegetarian; the heat/spiciness level was too much for my weak spice tolerance. I've been on a health kick lately and trying to decrease my meat intake/increase my vege intake. While most restaurants have vegetarian options, it's been my unfortunate experience to find that many of my favourite restaurants have less than stellar vege dishes...it's almost as if they are an after thought. We are pretty picky when it comes to Vietnamese cuisine, and we were skeptics when we heard about An Chay. They've been around for a long time, but the idea of vegetarian pho never enticed is enough to try it out. We are now regulars here, and our go to's are the satay pho, spicy pho (bun bo hue), and the pho. Broth is really flavourful and rich, the "meat" is really tasty, and the veges are fresh and delicious. Their spring rolls are awesome too.
