You know Mike's is one of those restaurants that probably doesn't get a full page review in a restauranteur magazine. But it is definitely a go to restaurant for people who enjoy but I guess would be called Americanized Italian food. Definitely plenty of sauces, all of the pastas that were accustomed to eating, prepared quite well. I tend to always return to the "tortellinis" with Alfredo sauce. My husband just cannot select anything other than chicken Parmesan. It is his absolute favorite Italian dish. But everything we've ever had has been good. The lasagna, the pasta, even the meatballs. If you're looking for an unpretentious Italian restaurant with the food you've always known, this is the place. Every time we have been there, the service has been just fine, sometimes great. This place was new for my boyfriend and I but we've always passed by and decided to give it a try. We didn't know how the lay out was let alone that then having a bar area. We were confused since we had gone through the double doors at first. Once we had gone into the lounge area it went from light outside to dark and dim. We were greeted right away which was nice. The waitress was on top of it. The only complaints were that the chicken Alfredo was inconsistent throughout the plate. Eat piece of chicken tasted different and tasted like it was straight out the microwave. The sauce wasn't bad nor the pasta but that chicken was rubbery. The cheese ravioli wasn't too bad just a bit under. Some of the edges were tough and the cheese wasn't warm in some areas. So we've been to Mike's a handful of times & overall it's pretty good food. The only thing I have an issue with is the chicken in the dishes I've gotten. On 2 separate occasions I've order a dish with chicken & the chicken is hard or rubbery. I thought it was just me the first time but I ordered it again & same thing. So I will definitely still be going but I'll never order the chicken anymore. This was our first time although growing up my mother would bring home dinner from here. We ordered to go and had calzones and lasagna. The calzones were so good. The dough for calzones was perfect texture and the fillings were so tasty. So large we only ate half each. We tried a bit of the lasagna and it was delicious. Large portion and excellent sauce and meat. We will be sure to come back and eat in next time. It is so clean inside. Ok I'm way too late to the game on this, been on my must get to's for too many decades. The tradition of it speaks for itself and lived up to the expectations and then some. Service is great, food is out of this world, and atmosphere is old world feel. Had a group of 7 and everyone's meals were to perfection. I went with the chicken Cordon Blue and no comparison to anywhere that would come close to this. The hidden surprise was the bed of pasta that was underneath which was sauced with the cream sauce and mushrooms and ham mixed in which was a stand alone dish on its own. Let's get the negatives out of the way first: the parking is terrible, seating is very limited, and the location itself isn't the most convenient. But honestly? That's where the complaints end. Once you get past the logistics, the food is absolutely delicious and the service is top-notch. My family has been coming here since I was little. A fresno staple. I come for the calzones. The best you will ever have. I get the beef and cheese. They are amazing. The bar lounge area is a decent size but they are always a packed house. This time I tried the loaded fries. They were ok. A little too much sauce made the fries soggy on the bottom. Ok let me just start with, we had the best service ever. And I mean at any restaurant, ever. Chris was our server and seemed to be the only one taking the orders and bringing the food around. I was early so he let me choose and was friendly and asked if I needed anything. When my friends showed up he was on it with the drinks and taking our orders. The food was great. The Meatballs were moist, the minestrone soup was pretty good. The bread was good and plentiful. Great lunch. We started off with a couple of appetizers. We had the breaded calamari strips and deep fried ravioli. Both of which were great! My guest had the lasagna she said it was very good. Guess I struck something less than gold here. Far less. I'm sure the OTHER side of this place would be nicer when I assume it opens in the evening. Arrived today at 2PM. The lounge side is extremely dark and it doesn't look like a penny has been spent in there for 40 years. The booth I sat in had a failing cushion on the bottom and was uncomfortable. It was bottomed out and should have been replaced 20 years ago, probably. This area had a lot of people and so many of them were coughing. Great! Somewhere I could smell the odor of tobacco floating by my table. Perhaps somebody standing too close to a door that was opening and closing? Gross! I ordered the cannelloni which was said to be chicken and beef. What arrived was anything but that. There was no distinguishable flavor and they were just elongated--flat raviolis--nothing like the tubular structure one would expect with ample filling. Super disappointing and an insult to the culture/tradition. Where else on earth would that be called 'Cannelloni?' Nowhere! The pasta could have been cooked longer. It was quite tough. I had also ordered a side of two meatballs, which were room temperature, if. I was very surprised by that as I would not have served them, and simply said they weren't available.... The cannelloni dish came in an extremely hot bowl which I appreciated, but it was also topped with their not great quality mozzarella, which also lacked flavor... I left most of that uneaten. I also ordered a side of Alfredo, which was decent, but not spectacular. Overall everything was lackluster, not unique, flavorful. It was bad! The star of that show was actually the fresh baked bread with butter, which was quite tasty. The service was OK but the food took longer than you might expect to come out. Disappointing as the extra time had nothing to do with heating things up, apparently. I understand that folks growing up in the area remember olden times when things might have been much better here. It's an emotional connection that has to be more forgiving than my experience/reaction today. There's a few other places like that where one of my older Medicare Clients insists is fantastic but I found just the opposite. It's an emotional connection formed in better times, much earlier. Stopped here on an 8 hour road trip for some dinner. Tried to call ahead so that our food would be ready by the time we got there and VERIFIED with the woman on the phone that we would be able to eat inside when we got there. When I arrived, we were told we could not eat inside? When asked why, they said bc it's a tipping issue. I told them I don't mind tipping and would pay extra just so I can sit down and feed my baby his dinner as we still two hours away from home. Then she stated they didn't want to "bus our table". Six of us women came in for lunch on Friday. Several men sat in the bar area and seemed like regulars. Another group of six women had already been served and given some wine. Our waitress came right over and got our drink order-wine! We also ordered the antipasto platter. One woman in the other group called over, "You are just beautiful!" She came over and snapped a pic of our group. So friendly Then we were occupied with our appetizer, which also came with good white bread and butter. Later we ordered a medium deep fried pizza with black olives, onions and pepperoni, as one can pick the three toppings included. Still later, our waitress came back carrying another bottle of wine (SeaGlass Chardonnay ) gifted to us by the other women. Wow That was so generous. Lastly, our wonderful waitress comped us ice cream for dessert! Sweet! Lastly, as we all got up to leave, the other table too, they again took a group photo of us under the Mike's sign. As they revealed they come to the restaurant frequently on Friday, we're thinking of making it our hangout too. Lunch should always be this fun! Covid-19 phase: I called and ordered a large 5 meat lover pizza and chicken Philly sandwich w/ jalapeños, no Mayo or mustard and jalapeños. The worker was kind and said it would be ready in 20 minutes. I went to get it. The worker is masked and masks are required. The food was ready, the worker was very kind. The lasagna was rather flavorless. Do I need to pay exter for a little garlic? I had a Scotch Rocks while I waited. When the food arrived I ordered another Scotch, the waiter asked if I wanted a fresh glass. I said no that one is fine. When the bill came I was suprised that the drinks were $10.25 each (for Johnnie Walker Black. That's a bit steep, but that's up to them to establish. My complaint is that they charged me an extra $1 because of the ice. And they charged for it twice, even though I was OK with my old glass. Ice is overhead, much like a clean glass. I will not pay for ice, it is overhead, practically free. I would rather pay an extra dollar to have garlic in the sauce. Mike's is in the service industry, and this is not service.
