Where do I begin? I hate using the words hidden gem because every social foodie's review is over saturated with this term. But Cosmopolitan BLEW ME AWAY! I don't go to Fresno ever and I was blessed to be invited to dine with a group of ladies at this OUTSTANDING gem of a restaurant. From the street view the building is very non-descript except for the name across the awning. But once you park in the lot and walk through the doors you discover a beautiful dimly lit restaurant with a fully stocked bar. We sat in the private room since we were a rather large party, so a lot of us really took our time to browse the menu. Our server Felix was extremely courteous and patient not to mention professional. He took our drink orders first, let us gab and then came back for our food orders. He gave us the specials before we decided. When the food came out, our orders were perfect. I was beyond satisfied with my choice. The texture on the salmon was crispy but not dry and the pasta flavor was subtly spicy. Truly sublime! I was sad I was too full to finish my meal. Judy came by our table to refill our water carafe and none of us knew who she was. Quietly returning and very unassuming, we asked her name and began to learn she as the matriarch of the family behind the establishment. What a joy to have met her and she raved about her son Joe, the chef and shared the history about the restaurant. At the end of the meal we all indulged in some tiramisu. When Judy learned that we were there for a PTA convention, she shared she used to teach as well. What a treasure! I was beyond impressed with this restaurant. Everyone was courteous and attentive, cocktails and food were superb! If I ever return to Fresno, this is a MUST! Cannot recommend enough. First time visiting Fresno and wanted lunch and a glass of wine in the downtown area (near the Doubletree). After checking a few recommendations, Cosmopolitan seemed like the best fit. Grabbed a seat at the bar and was greeted quickly. The bartender was great -- even offered tastes of a couple wines before I decided. I ordered the half Italian Dip with fries, and "half" is definitely a stretch. Great bread, generous tri-tip, lots of melted mozzarella, and a flavorful marinara. I planned to eat only part of it but ended up finishing the whole thing. They didn't seem slammed (Friday around 1 p.m.), but the bar was full and most tables were occupied, so clearly a popular spot. I'd absolutely recommend it if you're looking for good food and a lively downtown vibe. I tried to return Saturday night, but being Valentine's Day there was about a two-hour wait even for the bar -- disappointing because the dinner menu looked excellent. One thing to note: their hours are somewhat limited. No weekend lunch, and they appear to pause food service mid-afternoon on weekdays. Didn't affect me, but a friend went based on my recommendation and missed the kitchen window. Still, given the location, the schedule makes sense. read more

First opened in 1904 when it was the Italian American Grill and in 1933 it became the Cosmopolitan Tavern and Grill. 100+ years of service! I took in Fresno's culinary history for a lunch meeting and ordered the half Bronx Bomber with sweet potato fries. This half sandwich was huge - see my pictures added. My sando comes with ham, tukey, tri-tip, and swiss cheese. This came served on a super soft baguette and all the toppings. This sandwich delicious and actually held together while I ate, even with all of the oil and vinegar added. The fries were delicious and came with spicy ranch and horseradish for dipping. They offer both lunch and dinner and close down in between to reset for dinner service. The waiter was awesome and loved the vibe of this place, old school cool with a mix of cozy. I sat at the bar waiting for lunch guest and I just took in all of the awesome stained glass old world craftsmanship. Remember this place has been opened for 100+ years! read more

First time and I was wowed. I came with colleagues for a birthday luncheon and everyone loved it. Some have been here before especially for drinks. I ordered a full French Dip with sweet potato fries. It was so good. The sandwich was full on with meat. The au jus included was hot. I was only able to eat half the sandwich so I took the rest to my wife and daughter who were both happy with the sandwich a few hours later. The other half was enough for 2. My friend and I were very excited to try out this establishment. We had gone this past Friday (4/24/2026). I had only gone one time before. And that was about nine or so years ago with some colleagues. It was very clean inside and the waiter was nice. I ordered the spicy salmon spaghetti and my friend had ordered the steak dinner well done. As she was eating, she noticed that it was very pink. She asked a waiter if it could be grilled more or baked or something for it to get more well done. He said he would ask if it could be microwaved. He took her entire plate, leaving her with no food. I felt uncomfortable eating because I knew she was hungry. Instead of taking the steak back on a smaller plate and leaving her to eat the pasta and vegetables, she was left with absolutely no food. He came back around 10 minutes later and said she would have to microwave it at home. I personally have never heard of a restaurant saying that to a customer before. At first, he offered her either a free drink or a free dessert. She declined. We were not looking for a free meal or any other freebies. She just wanted her steak to be a little more cooked. She asked to speak to a manager because we were astounded by the lack of concern for how she ordered her meal. As we were about to leave he did give her two pieces of cake. As for myself, my food came out great.It was delicious. However, I asked for a to go box. The waiter proceeded to take my food to the back to box it up himself. Personally, I prefer for my food to be boxed up by me. As I like to scrape all of the sauce and everything, so the noodles or whatever else doesn't get dry. There were a couple of other little mishaps such as before my friend could order a drink the waiter took away the drink menu. Overall, it is a very nice place, but we will not be going back. I always eat at the bar so service is excellent regardless how busy. It's casually nice in here. Great for when there's something at Soroyan Theater. They do take reservations so if you're going to a show make sure you get that reservation. They have a nice banquet room and a covered patio which is seasonal. The building is spacious and the service is great. It's located right off the "O" street exit from highway 41 so you can get there quickly. We celebrated our son's graduation from Fresno Pacific University (master's degree) with a celebration dinner at Cosmopolitan Tavern on 5-9-2026. We made reservations for 7 the evening before with no problem. We tasted a couple of options at the cosmopolitan the evening before because we're not familiar with the Fresno area, we liked the service, the food and the ambiance of the restaurant. The evening of the celebratory dinner, we were greeted warmly by Kayla, shown to our table which was set and were waited on by Claudia. Claudia was very attentive to us as was Allen. Everyone at our table enjoyed their meals, everything from the Italian wedding soup, salads, pizza, beef short ribs, stuffed squash blossoms, stuffed ravioli in vodka sauce was on point and super fresh and delicious, the desserts were very good as well. Sat 12/6/25 6pm, party of six. Food- 14 oz ordered medium New York steak, vegetables & mash potato. The most dry medium steak ever had! No flavor on steak. Any part of the mash potatoes or steak touching the vegetables was poisoned by the vegetable flavor. Vegetables had burnt oil flavor- not edible. The taste was unbearable. Bread was microwave warm middle but with the crunchy ends. ALL my food was warm! Not hot, not cold but warm. Others ordered pasta dishes and can see the steam from the pasta. I feel my plate was cooked and waiting for the pasta to cook, then the dishes came out. Service- was v e r y s l o w! Refilling water and drinks was an extensive wait. Salad came out then the bread. Asked for 2x red chili flakes and again a long wait to the point I went to remind our server. Ambiance - this day particular was cold all day. I left my long coat in the car. While waiting for our drink, I was getting kinda chilly, so where others as I see people with their coats, scarfs and hats still on. I decided to try something new today and boy was I glad I did! I ordered the Hot Mustard Pastrami Panini - half size and it was delicious. Bread had a crunch in the crust but soft to bite into. The caramelized onions, mustard, pastrami and arugula all flowed together seamlessly. The mustard had a slight bite to it, but was not overly 'hot'. The half portions here are HUGE! I ordered online through yelp which led me to Chow Now, and the online order was placed around 12:15 pm, I arrived at 12:30 as I placed the order as please do asap. I waited until 12:50 for my order, and once received, my sandwich was missing the au jus, that makes the sandwich. My fries were cold. I spent $30 on this lunch and wish I hadn't. The ONLY thing that was favorable was the customer service by the cashier/host. She was kind and thoughtful even though my order had been clearly forgotten or not put into the kitchen timely. She offered me a cold drink while I waited and apologized a few times. I will be back but will try dine in, as, unfortunately this is obviously not a good option for take out. My presence seemed to upset her in some way, but I was able to quickly wash that away with the sweet bitters of a delicious old fashioned. I was served by a very nishe lady bartender who immediately put me at ease and tended to my every need. It was my first time, but I quickly became relaxed and comfortable. I indulged in the tavern burger. The garlic pesto aioli blew my nards off. To top it off, they had an old cash register. I like those. I do not live in Fresno but found this place trying to find food nearby via google maps. I had spent 11 hours at the hospital with my husband that is in the burn unit and wanted something better than the fast food I had been eating the last couple days for the convenience. I called and made a to-go order for pick up close to closing time and they were happy to put it in even though it was late. I got a glass of wine while I waited and the nice lady bartender gave me a glass on the house. I think she could see I really needed it. The customer service is exceptional! And after I got back to the hotel and dug into my Leonardo pizza?!.... amazing!! I made the best choice tonight choosing this place. If and when I am back in Fresno, I will be coming here. I surprised my mom by taking her to the Fresno Philharmonic, which is held at William Saroyan Theatre. Before our show, I always like to come to the Cosmopolitan restaurant. The food is delicious. Our waiter was busy, so a nice helper named Melissa took care of us. She makes a wonderful server. She checked on us throughout the night. She took our order and made sure we were wonderful. I'm not sure why she isn't our server because she took our order and gave us our drinks gave us our bread packed our food, gave us our chech and kept checking in on us.
