We interviewed several contractors. Best decision we made was to put our trust in him. Our family decided to began construction Sept 2020. I needed permits, structural engineer, architect so on. We extended the top of our home, thus making our daughters rooms bigger and now w walk in closets! New electric, I chose mini splits for heating & cooling, extended the wood flooring, fresh walls, new paint & WE LOVE IT!!!! Downstairs we punched out the rear wall, his brother added support beams / wood & made us a fantastic great family room. We updated the fireplace, electric, new wood floors, tons of thin windows, mini split, vaulted ceiling and again WE LOVE IT!!! Along the way he def tried to help us and keep costs down. He was honest & offered suggestions. This was about a 9 month process. Working w the city & inspectors and their inspections takes time! Be patient! It is all done & we love it! I was completely shocked and disgusted when he said he wouldn't take the job because he dosent think it would enough money. That he has a minimum of 40k to do a job. Then told me to give him a call next year when I have the more expensive job to do. Keep in mind, he didn't even come out to look at my house... which is 4000 finished square feet with 4 large full bathrooms with double sinks! I have received two other bids and we definitely would have met his "minimum". I also let him know, I would never hire him for my kitchen, way too arrogant to come into my home.

The "quality player": I quickly discovered that the player that I had expected to be the high cost/high quality was a huge pain to work with (many meetings, unwillingness to give me pricing in writing, forgetting about details we'd discussed, etc.) so I had no confidence in their ability to do the job at the agreed upon price within the agreed upon time frame. The "cost" player: The good news is that they made it very easy for me to go with Mike L and the Basement Company. He produced great designs, had creative ideas, and alerted me to things to think about when they were cheap & easy to do, instead of having to fix problems later (like add baseboard heaters to basement bedrooms because it can get cold down there and we want our guests to be comfortable). I'm a worrier and a perfectionist (plus a little paranoid about getting hosed by a contractor) and I work from home so I kept watching for something to go wrong, but it never did. On time, on budget, as-promised, with every detail addressed. If something concerned me, I called Mike and it was sorted out easily. When they were close to finished, Mike came over and started marking every imperfection with blue tape. He found LOADS of little things that we never would have noticed. All of the things he spotted were fixed in no time. I was concerned that we would need to haggle over a 'punch list' of things that we wanted him to complete, but it never came to that. All of the workers were professional, kind (remembered my kids's names and even let my boys help a little, when appropriate) and everything was spotless every day! (No dumpster outside, no overflowing garbage cans, no junk in the work area, no dust filling the upstairs, no nasty port-a-potty to annoy my neighbors, etc.). Since my wife and I both work at home (which is part of the reason we wanted to add another office), we were able to watch over a lot of the work, but if I were to do it again someday I would have enough confidence in Mike to just write him a check and stay out of the process until he was done. Mike's a great guy, he's got a great team (not random contractors that come and go...they are people that have worked together for years), he's got his process down (simple, transparent, predictable), plus he was significantly less expensive than his competition. I recommend the Basement Company so enthusiastically that when I saw that they weren't on Yelp, I created an entry for them (I've never done that for anyone before!).

Set an appointment for Tuesday 1/3/23 (next day), inspected work and gave us an quote via email document. Due to their responsiveness and communication we agreed to get the work completed without waiting for around for other quotes. We scheduled the job for Friday 1/6/23. We specifically met with and had work completed by Peter. We sincerely enjoyed working with him! He was punctual, had integrity, and was meticulous about his craft. Job was completed in 2 days. Pricing was very reasonable, in fact the other quotes were given through yelp messages and none of the other handyman offered to come out and inspect the work. The other two bids that we received (after Peter's work was complete) came out more expensive than what NRWillis charged... even though they never came out to inspect the work. After working with Peter on this job, we presented him with a couple of more projects around our home and are waiting for his quotes.

Three companies refused, Tipping hat told me the furnace was too old to light and "by law" they couldnt light the wh without the furnace, but they would happily replace both for 12,000. Through a friend, I was referred to Dale Horton, owner of Guns and Hoses. At first he indicated he was sick, flu/covid/miserable. But when he learned the situation, he showed up, lit both, went to Home Depot and replaced my thermostat. Got me heat and hot water so we could start the massive clean up. Refused to take payment. Cannot recommend them more highly.

Aside from that, they (Carelis and Ian) are the worst communicators you will ever encounter even when things are going well. They also do not properly plan or budget for things not going perfect.
