Poquoson Veterinary Hospital - Buddy says "Thank you!"

We are new to the area and in looking for a great place to take our pets I began with this Vet…read morebecause they are 6 minutes down the road. I am extremely glad I did! I found the front desk to be very helpful and kind, the man that took us back to the exam room was a delight, and the vet was absolutely focused on listening to what we had to say and examining our big boy Buddy. The Vet did not pummel me with do's and don'ts as I have been in the past (ie harping on the importance of heartworm medicine, which I was expecting because thats been a common occurrence with past Vets even though my animals ARE on medication...and since the Virginia State Bird seems to be the Mosquito, lol) As for pricing, again, I was very pleased! I was expecting to have to pay three times what I was charged! Their services are affordable for anyone who, like me, is living on retirement. I am sure, as with everywhere else, they are not infallible, but overall, THIS is the best place in town!

However, I won't be returning due to how they handle stool sample kits. Without asking or informing you ahead of time, they routinely add a kit to your bill and hand it to you at checkout. Even after I started declining it, they continued to try each visit. If you try to return an unused kit, they won't refund or credit it--and still attempt to give you another one the next time. This lack of transparency and repeated upselling feels pushy, immoral, and unprofessional. It's disappointing and has ultimately led me to take my business elsewhere.

I feel very conflicted about this place right now. My husband and I boarded our two dogs here back…read morein October and had a great experience. We received regular updates and felt well informed throughout their stay. The only issue at that time was that one of our dogs developed conjunctivitis, but it was minor and easily treated. Unfortunately, our most recent experience was completely different. When I was on my way to drop off our dogs, I received a call from an employee who was laughing while telling me they actually close at 5:30, not 6 as stated on their website. While I understand that arriving close to closing isn't ideal, policies like that should be clearly communicated in advance. While we were away, my phone number stopped working. A few days into the trip, I called to check on our dogs and update my contact information. During that call, the employees I spoke with were again laughing throughout the conversation. I was placed on hold for about seven minutes, only to be told "they're fine" before the call was abruptly ended after I said thank you. I had to call back just to ensure my updated phone number was on file, and I clearly explained that my original number was no longer active. At some point during our trip, there was an incident that required one of my dogs to be removed from group play. However, I was never contacted at my updated number. This is what concerns me most. I feel that my ability to make decisions for my dog's care was taken away. Had I been informed, I could have arranged for a family member to pick him up or explored other options. Instead, he was in a crate for 20 hours a day for nearly a week. I quite frankly feel ill thinking about it. My concern is mostly about the inconsistency in care and professionalism. While our first experience was great, this visit felt careless and poorly handled. Because of this, I don't feel confident bringing my dogs back in the future.

We are so grateful to have discovered that a new Hounds Town located in Newport News, VA. It's just short of an hours drive for us but we wouldn't trust just anyone to care for our furry children. All of the dogs staying at Hounds Town are generally separated by size and are in large open pens where they socialize and play. They have smaller private rooms for feeding and for overnight stays. My oldest dog is 12 years old and has started showing the early stages of arthritis. The owner of Hounds Town of Newport News, Dave, was so compassionate and had a nice sized throw rug placed in his room to assist my dog in getting up after laying down. My dogs love coming here to play with the other dogs. The groomers here clipped their nails and washed and dried them before when arrived to pick them up. It's a common for pets that do stay here often sleep at home restfully , what has become known as " The Hounds Town Coma". The staff here go above and beyond to make sure that your pet is well taken cared for be it for daycare or several overnight stays.

I made it clear that, given my dog's age and condition, my goal was to keep her comfortable until the end. Despite communicating those wishes, I felt pressured into additional X-rays and medications that resulted in a bill of over $600. Just two days later, my sweet dog had to be euthanized. When I called the office to schedule euthanasia, no accommodations or compassion were offered. I was simply told I could bring her in on Monday, meaning my suffering dog would have had to endure the entire weekend. The receptionist showed very little sympathy during one of the most difficult moments a pet owner can face. During my final visit, I witnessed the receptionist warmly tell another pet owner to "call us tomorrow with an update." As I was leaving with my gravely ill dog, I was casually told, "Hope your baby feels better." Given my dog's condition, those words felt dismissive and lacking genuine compassion. What hurt the most was feeling that empathy and concern were not extended equally to every client. Compassion should be shown to all pet owners, especially during end-of-life situations. After years of bringing my pets to this practice, I can no longer recommend Armistead Animal Hospital. They have lost my business, and I would travel elsewhere for veterinary care rather than return.

That's exactly what happened to me when my cat had an upset stomach and his regular clinic was closed for the day. I was at a loss until I remembered the Armistead Avenue Veterinary Hospital, which was always bustling with activity. Although I was aware that I would have to wait due to their walk-in policy, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the clinic was still following COVID protocols. Thoughtful yet slightly inconvenient, the wait was worth it as the doctor was incredibly knowledgeable and put my mind at ease. The clinic was crowded, which isn't surprising given their popularity, but I was delighted to see that they were able to accommodate my furry friend in his time of need. After a wait of over two hours, I was given some suggestions and my mans didn't require any medication. If you're ever in need of a reliable veterinary clinic, look no further than Armistead Avenue Veterinary Hospital. You can find them at 531 N Armistead Ave in Hampton, VA, or give them a call at (757) 723-8571. Trust me, your furry friends will thank you for it!

When I picked up my dog, I noticed he had not been fed his lunch. He went for a trial the week before and was not fed either. He is a puppy. He takes a minute to eat. They gave the excuse he "was probably nervous". However no matter where we are, he eats. More disgustingly there was visible feces on his fur, which was concerning and upsetting. I understand that things can get busy, but basic care like feeding and cleanliness are essential, especially when entrusting someone with a pet's well-being. I hope this feedback can help improve the experience for others in the future, as I truly wanted this to be a positive and reliable place for my dog.

I mean they would take aggressive dogs. Now they can even handle my 2 boys that came for 2+ years for daycare & boarder. On evaluation they feel they can't handle my dogs because one is missing an eye and the other is protective of his brother. They used to just separate them into different groups. They didn't even attempt on the re-evaluation to keep them together. This only means staffing isn't adequate and/or the training from off leash isn't good. Either way if you used to bring your pup here know they can't handle normal dog behavior. Disappointed they were wonderful sad to see there just no good places in the Hampton roads area. Only positive is the place is still nice & the staff were polite. First experience 2 years ago:: I can't say enough good things about Bay Rivers!
