I'm impressed with what I know of this location. They seem very "buttoned up" and efficient in their daily processes. I toured recently in advance of boarding my little one. The daycare features parallel cages, so there's safety with socialization, which is ideal for us. Update - 4/30/18 - my pup is *really* unhappy coming here for some reason so I'm on the hunt again. I don't know if there's an issue, but I don't like seeing her SO unhappy and afraid. read more

Small to large animals they take great pride in taking care of their animals and owners

Vets and staff are very friendly but I will not board my dog here again. I picked her up Friday and my dog has been acting strange ever since not eating or sitting. Brought her in to get looked at today because I just know something happened while she was in their care. Her nose was tore up from the kennel she was in and she has pain in her spine along with a temperature. Paid over $300 today for the vet bill for what they caused. I'm very disappointed I would understand paying a vet bill if it was something that happened at home but charging to to fix a problem that they caused. Brought her back today dr freeman was very concerned with figuring out what is wrong with my girl. Did some more extensive testing and did not charge for it which I appreciate. Also gave her some antibiotics just Incase while we are waiting for the test results. I will update again after we hear back. read more

I'm so impressed! During a time when operation is far from normal due to COVID-19, the staff here provided amazing customer service & care for my pup. She started showing urinary discomfort Friday night and not ones I could wait until Monday to address. Every vet office I called until Pine Meadow was booked or not accepting new pets. I had called 14 locations before a friend recommended them. The office staff warned me they were busy but urged me to head that way. They started our paperwork within 20 minutes, gave me detailed information and recommendations for care once they saw her, and this is the most reasonably priced vet visit I've ever experienced. The compassion they showed towards me (and my pup of course) means so so much. When I said thank you they were so selfless and said that's what they're here for. After our two French Mastiffs had a run in with a rabid raccoon, I brought them both in for a booster shot and they were very comforting and reassuring that the odds were in our favor that our dogs would be OK. My usual vet's hours just don't work with my schedule- no dr. on Thursdays, earliest appointments begin at 1030. Yelped, called around, spoke to a friendly person here. She patiently advised they could see me at 900 am on a Thursday. Done. Got directions to make sure I could arrive on time (the Deangelo list is up Yorktown Beach- wrong end of 17). It's opposite side on 17, past Royal Farms, you can see the sign right after the light, before Country (sp?) Grill & my fave Vintner's Cellar. I passed the intersection, made a right through the woods & there they are. Filled out some paper work & got seen pretty quickly. Staff is friendly- from reception, to the assistants & Dr. Freeman. They have grooming, boarding, daycare. A separate waiting area for cats divided by a low wall. Took a scraping on my dog's skin, checked for mites. Clipped her nails as my last minute request & gave me tips along with brochures for effective flea & tick meds for our new location. They gave her the cutest doggie bag for her meds, lol! Felt like a pediatrician visit! There were toys & leashes on the counter. I asked if they could add a slip leash onto my ticket. They were complimentary! I like free. Talked about Office Space & using unruly technology as piñatas while waiting to check out. Loved my first visit, hate that we are moving out of state. Boarded our dog here for 9 days. She was brought in with a Thundershirt and anxiety meds. When I picked her up it turned out they never took off her jacket FOR THE ENTIRE 9 day stay in 90+ degree weather (this jacket should not be on for more than 6 hours at a tjme). She now has chaffing on her stomach and an infection from the jacket which was COVERED IN DOG POOP AND PEE when we picked her up. The day I picked her up I had to go back and pick up her meds that were left the day before and they gave them to me and said they had been only given to her ONCE. It was easy scheduling an annual exam. Had to wait approximately 10-15 minutes but the vet and assistant were WONDERFUL!

It was 30 years ago that I met Dr. Robert Freeman at Pine Meadow Veterinary Hospital located in Yorktown, Va. I was single and I adopted a Shar pai, no veterinarian within the Hampton Roads area, had treated nor knew anything about a Shar pai. I approached Dr. Freeman and he became our hero in treating our little Ming Ming. My husband to be, never, never had any contact with a dog. Soon Ming Ming became his baby. Ming Ming past at the age of 8, I adopted another Shar pai: Jody. Months later Jody start to swell to where she looked like a large balloon! When Jody barked she got larger & larger. For those who do not know, the Shar pai's skin is not attached to their muscles, this is why they have so many skin wrinkles. Jody was treated at Pine Meadow then transfer to the NN Emergency Hospital over the nights. To make this story short. After many days, Dr. Freeman contacted the University of VA, the conclusion was to implant a inter-tube vale into Jody's skin. The two boys that work for me couldn't wait to come to work to squeeze Jody's body. They would squeeze the air built up in her. Jody lived with us for 16 years, double a what a Shar pai would live. I adopted an abused little toy Maltese, she was 7 and raised in a puppy mill. Gracie was my little baby, the love of my life during her six years with us. Gracie had many health issues, Dr. Freeman as before with my shar pa'is took great care of Gracie. He has and always will provide true love and care of all animals that come into his care. I was lucky enough to find these vets a year ago after trying 3-4 other vets in the area. I love the vets here and the wonderful, friendly staff. The wait can be long but worth it, it is long because the vets take their time with you and listen to you and answer all your questions. The vets seem to treat you as a family friend rather then just a client to be moved in and out. The desk staff are friendly, remember my pets and always try to put them at ease if they are anxious. I have been using the services of Pine Meadow Vet Hospital for 30 years. They have welcomed my puppies, cared for them professionally as they grew old, then provided invaluable medical help in their older years, and finally helped me when I reached the toughest part of their life. I have had dogs all of my life; usually big dogs like Rottweilers, Malamutes, and Pit Bulls. Their knowledge, professionalism, and care are unequaled in the Tidewater area of Virginia. Had it not been for our most recent Rottweiler, Titus, receiving an extremely prompt diagnosis of his bone cancer by one of their doctors, we would have lost him in a few months. Instead he was able to live another year with us, and suffered very little before he died. Kudos to the staff and doctors! My roommate and I stopped using daycare as there are too many problems to list. We were dumb and used this place one more time for boarding. Came back 2 days earlier from vacation and asked for a tour. We were curious to see what the back was like. During the tour we were shown the dog room. Against the far end of the wall are wooden shelves next to an x-ray machine. These shelves are used to hold dog owners belongings. I saw many different bags belonging to dog owners. I recognized Buddy's boarding bag on this wooden shelf. The bag I had packed myself. His bag is clear plastic. I saw all his stuff. Blanket, favorite toy, brand new rawhide still sealed in the package, and a box of unopened treats. Obviously he hadn't gotten any of these things the entire time he was there! I asked the girl if the dogs get the belongings that customers leave. She opened her mouth and looked like she was going to say yes, but I must have had "that look". She stuttered that it was against their policy to give dogs their belongings. I was livid! The entire time I had brought his belongings and he never got a single thing! I asked why it was against their policy to give a dog their own toy or something else of theirs. She tells me that they're not responsible for giving out and keeping track of a dog's belongings. That's always been their policy. I asked why would you accept all of this stuff? Why would you let customers bring their dog's belongings if only to sit on the shelf? After more stuttering she tells me, and I quote, "it makes the clients feel good thinking their dog is going to get their stuff". Unbelievable! This reeks of dishonesty! The receptionist told us that he would get his things! And I'm sure everyone else who brought their dog's belongings were told the same. No one is going to bring their dog's stuff in while knowing it will sit on the shelf unused! I don't know what infuriated me more. That this place performs shady business practices or that the people working there have no problem lying to you. I will end this part here by warning any one reading this that if you bring you dog's presonal belongings, THEY WILL NOT GET THEM! And if they tell you that they will, they're lying! Take it from someone who knows. I didn't think it could get any worse than that, but it did. I was shown the outside dog runs. The place was a mess. For starters, many dog runs were in need of poop scooping. Some cages contained bowls of dog food which were flipped over with dog food scattered on the concrete. The roof also seems to have water leakage issues as half of the dog runs were partly or completely underwater with dogs running around in it. Just a mess. Off to the side were 2 female employees. Both appeared to be texting on cellphones. Neither one showing signs of comforting the dogs which were a few feet away from them. I found Buddy in the back row. Like some of the other dog runs, his was flooded with water. On either side of him were 2 very aggressive and much bigger dogs which were snarling and trying to snap at him through the fence. On one of their cage cards it actually said, CANINE AGGRESSIVE - DO NOT PLACE NEXT TO OTHER DOGS. And yet there he was between 2 of them. They couldn't have found a worse place to put him if they had tried. It was pretty clear that he was absolutely terrified, shaking and balled up in the far end of the run. I was frazzled after that and couldn't think and asked to leave. I imagine it's not fun cleaning up after dogs. Where minimum wage and zero benefits aren't much of an initiative in doing the job properly. But that shouldn't be used as an excuse by the employer in which a free pass is given for their workers careless and laxidasical attitudes towards their responsibilities to the customers. But the fault is not entirely their own. At a place where the owners have set the bar so low, it shouldn't be much of a surprise that its employees follow by example because they've come to accept the substandard care they provide as all part of the norm. And for the lady in the other post that spoke about the girl telling her that the owner knew for years about the leaky roof, it may come as a surprise, but this place doesn't have one owner, it has two, Dr. Mitzel and Dr. Freeman. This makes it twice as bad as neither owner is willing to step up to the plate and address the serious issues and deficiencies that seem to run rampant in this place. Not even something as simple as fixing a leaky roof. A technology we've mastered for quite some time now. Shameful! read more

Administarive support staff is a disaster - didn't even know you have to provide a written rabies certificate with the rabies tag. Be prepared to wait and wait in the waiting room as the girls enage in endless social chatter - bring a good book. Administartive staff has no skill at reading animal behavior and are at risk of being bitten by problematic dogs. If you have a dog that is nervous or a biter bring a muzzle and don't let the admin staff within range.. read more

I have been taking my dog(s) to Pine Meadow for 20 years. I have never had an incident or a problem. I cannot say anything about the kennel because I do not board my dogs. But the staff and the docs are great and always help me. They are a very busy office. I have to wait sometimes but do not mind. I get to talk to others or pet the animals waiting also. Dr. DeAngelis is awesome and I have never had any issues. I trust her completely with the care of my dogs. She helped me greatly with one of my past pets and a cancer diagnosis. And my recent dog she went out of her way to help with a bleeding incident. She called me after hours and made sure I had the proper treatment for my dog. I also have seen Dr. Freeman and he is excellent. They are always patient and explain everything thoroughly. I have referred others to go there also. read more

Our dog absolutely loves the girls and Dr. Freeman at the vet and upon arrival goes directly behind the counter to get her kisses. Dr. Freeman is fantastic as well and never acts in a hurry to move you through the paces. He listens to your concerns and explains in great detail the answers to my concerns. We have been going to Pine Meadow's for well over 15 years now and have never experienced any negative treatment in all of those years. We have been using Pine Meadow for about 10 years and I could not be happier with them. The office staff has always been helpful and checkin/out is always efficient and timely. They have performed surgery on one of our dogs a handful of times, including the first life saving surgery where a previous vet misdiagnosed her. (Turned out that "bladder infection" was actually a 5 pound tumor on the uterus) they did the surgery that day and Cally is a 17 year old happy & healthy Pitbull today thanks to them! we have been loyal customers ever since. The doctors are personable and very skilled. My only complaint would be the rooms are tight! Otherwise, great price, great people, happy owners! read more

I will 100% never go to this vet again. The staff is very poor and are not friendly. My last visit sealed the deal for me. I waited in the waiting area for at least 30 minutes, then was asked by an assistant (Don't recall her name-she had long black hair)...to come to a room. She was very unfriendly and while I was already a little frustrated, I tried engaging a conversation with the young woman and there was no chance of getting a smile or a nice remark from this girl. I don't know how they train their employees at this vet, but I will not take my animal to a vet that has employees with that kind of attitude.This is not the first time I have seen their employees walking around with attitudes or overheard inappropriate remarks. If you ask me, I would not want assistants that act like this. The doctor, however, was very polite and I would definitely recommend him. read more

I couldn't agree with Lisa more! We have been taking our pets here since 1986 and would never change. Our two (big) dogs absolutely love the place and the people. They go nearly every day for day care. The staff at the front desk are friendly and helpful. The staff who supervise the kennels are tuned in to each dog and his or her needs, behaviors, etc. They also watch for any kind of potential problem, then call to see if the client wishes the dog to be seen by a doctor. For example, one of our dogs was slightly limping one day - when they called we were able to tell them he had apparently pulled a muscle over the weekend and they agreed to keep an eye on it and limit him for the day to leash walks. After a couple days of limiting his activity and using liniment he was back to normal. The point is they give you the choice of whether you want a doctor to take a look at them or if you want to take a "wait and see" stance. They take great care and watchfulness over them while they are in daycare. As far as waiting for an appointment, the only time or two this has happened was when they had an emergency. And I know that if it were my pet in need of emergency aid, I would appreciate that it take place promptly. I'm certainly willing to wait for another person's pet. Any time this has happened both the doctors and staff have explained an genuinely apologized. I'd also like to say that the staff works hard to help reinforce training. One of our dogs was particularly rambunctious and would pull on the leash. Along with some home training, every one of the staff has worked with him and for some time now he has been walking with them in a very controlled manner. I feel this sort of thing is a bonus as we are not paying them to train, yet they are. Finally, I'd like to say that all the doctors are there because they truly care about animals...it's not as one person said "for a fast buck!" I highly recommend them. . read more
