My husband called this morning to find out what option we had to bring our baby Kylie in to get her…read morechecked further as we took her to UrgentVet on Saturday. We were told all she'd need and basically they're just about as expensive as UrgentVet is for diagnostics. $600-$700 and that's without the sedation she's need and another exam etc...we asked about payment plans etc and of course as we expected they have none besides care credit. We understand that though. But the young lady he was speaking to said she wasn't trying to be rude (which is usually what someone says before they are) but we should think about calling someone else for euthanasia or check quality of life. She literally had the referral from UrgentVet that every thing she was bright and alert etc I will attach the report. She literally only had three things abnormal. Her respiratory has always been the way it is we've had that checked a while back and she snores. We were told by Todd's lane that she's fine in that aspect. I'm not saying that her heavy abdomen won't make that worse but she has the history. She's literally around here licking her mouth when we're eating barking and running to the door when we get home still. Same energy just hard for her to get comfortable to lie down but she's resting well once she gets into her position. What would I look like taking my dog in there and they see how she's behaving and to even discuss putting her down is so heartless. Everyone else have called has been so caring and sweet and providing resources . Todds Lane was great back in the day when we used to take our dogs there but now it's all about selling you on products and services. It's not about the care of the animals at all. I hope that they reap reap what they sow because they are heartless! Smh...I will not take Kylie there for anything else. I wanted to add a video of how excited she still is and active but I can't. She's not lethargic, no vomiting, no diarrhea. None of those symptoms. The only thing is that she seems disinterested in her dog food so I'm fixing her chicken and rice and turkey and vegetables with no salt right now and she is eating that just fine.

TLDR: this vet has hiked their prices substantially, they have an unprofessional staff, and I had…read moreto watch my dog choke to death in her last moments because they mishandled her euthanasia. I have been coming to this vet for at least 4 years now. In the beginning, I really loved this vet and highly recommended them to many friends. I even continued to go here despite moving much further away and being closer to several other vet options. But things have changed in the past year or so. I have noticed that the staff has changed entirely, so I can't help but think that there has possibly been a change in ownership or management. Prices have sky rocketed and professionalism has significantly decreased. I have had my final straw this past week. I had previously euthanized my pit bull at Friendship about 3 years ago because of a spinal injury. That experience was incredible and I was grateful for the amount of care the staff had put into our farewell to our precious dog. However, this year, I had to euthanize another elderly dog of mine, and the experience was absolutely horrible!!!! I got to the appointment early so that I could go in and speak with the receptionist (while my partner remained in the car with our dog). My intention was to preemptively fill out all paperwork and pay in advance. There were no customers at all in the waiting room, and there were two receptionist. Both appeared to be consumed by their computers. I announced myself and explained why I was there. Initially, the receptionist was kind, but then the other receptionist reminded her that she needed to hurry up to take her lunch break. She then proceeded to rush through my check-in, hurriedly filling out my paperwork, not even asking if I wanted any additional services/products for the cremation. I had to inject myself and insist on asking for a paw print. She didn't even ask me if I wanted to see what other products they had. Then other customers started arriving in the lobby, and it appeared that her attention was redirected. She never said another word to me while I was standing at the counter, so I just walked out and went back out to my car for my final moments with my dog. We brought her in at exactly the appointment time, and had to sit in the lobby temporarily. Then we were ushered into the same exam room that we previously put my pit bull down in. It's a specific room that has its own private exit so that dog parents don't have to exit through the lobby while emotional. While in there, the vet and assistant took awhile; so we sat there soaking in our last moments with our dog while have to overhear people yelling in the lobby at their pets. It was so uncomfortable. Most vets place a sign or candle out in the lobby to signal that a pet is being put down, and requesting silence. Not this place. The vet finally came in and had more paperwork for me to sign (even though I had asked to fill out all paperwork when I came in early). The assistant said "I'm going to take her to the back now". This scared me because she didn't say why. I had to protest to ask if she [my dog] was coming back or not. She carelessly said "oh yeah, she's just getting a catheter". It felt like she didn't understand why we were on edge and emotional. When she came back with our dog and the vet, they laid her down on a blanket and injected a sedative, then they left the room to give us time to say goodbye. In the midst of our farewell, the assistant came in and quickly laid down a plate of beef and rice in front of our dog. Our dog obviously started eating it quickly, but the sedation started to hit her after about 2 bites. She was immediately paralyzed in the face and was unable to chew and swallow properly. We had to listen to our dog choke and struggle in her last moments. It was devastating to watch, and I felt completely helpless. They took that last moment from us. I was trying to be strong as I'm heavily pregnant and my partner was extremely emotional in the moment, so I restrained my anger because I just wanted to be in that moment with my dog. The vet came back in and administered the final injection. When they went to leave the room again, the assistant asked how I wanted to pay... literally seconds after my dog died in my arms. I told her I would call and pay later. She went to leave, and I had to ask if we were able to use the private exit in the room because now there were signs on the door saying "do not use". She lazily said "oh sure". And that was it. I looked down at my dog who had beef, rice, and foam pouring out of her mouth. I had to cover it up with the blanket because it broke my heart to look at. That was my last moment with my girl and they ruined it.

That is not the problem this time. Scheduled for surgery that kept getting rescheduled then they finally see us and cancel two hours after dropping the dog off. I took the entire day off to deal with this. I was upset when I went there. I said it better not cost me a dime to get out of here. I did say if you knew I was coming and could do anything; my dog should have been ready. I stood there for about 15 mins waiting. They claimed I refused to pay. Which was a lie. I would have paid had they handed me a bill. So she decided to lie on the vet record saying I refused to pay. I was pissed and said I may not be bringing my dog back. She was like you want me to print your records. I said no I have to talk to my wife. She exaggerated the situation. Good luck getting surgery done at this location. I would look elsewhere unless you like crappy customers service and unreliable care.

When asked where she normally went for vet care, she said Salty Paws near where she lives in Hampton. Since I live in VA Beach, I asked my son to drive the 45mins north to take Tiggers to the vet. Visit #1 on 6 Nov: $500, said needed some shots and flea treatment and to come back 10 Nov. Attempted Visit #2: Major wreck and fire on the 64. Took my son over an hour to drive from VA Beach For Tiggers scheduled appointment and turned away for being FOUR minutes late. FOUR! after an hour drive across town. Told to come back the next day. By the way, I am a Navy healthcare provider and it is preposterous to turn someone away prior to 15minutes past the scheduled appointment time as we take into consideration traffic and travel throughout the Hampton Roads area. Visit #3 11 Nov: another $500 for them to put a straw through his ear, give some more meds and scheduled follow up 2 weeks later. 1 week later and the poor cat is still miserable without any obvious decrease of swelling to his ear. Blood is matted into his fur down the side of his face. So we decide to take him to a local vet in VA Beach. We simply can't wait another week because we're really concerned for the misery of this cat. Being turned away for being 4mins late the last time really ticked me off and I was no longer feeling like I wanted to continue care with Salty Paws at this point. Local Vet takes one look at Tiggers and exclaims: What the HECK is that???!!! Do you mind if we take a picture so we can train our vets on what NOT to do??? The straw that was supposed 'drain' his ear, literally went straight through-- so how the heck was this providing any drainage?? The blood and pus seeped out from around the straw, not through it. And of course another $500 for that visit. Vet pulled out the tube, gave some more meds plus an antibiotic (since Salty Paws didn't give him one despite being at major risk for infection) fully drained the ear, kindly shaved the area where the fur had gotten filled with blood, and then had to stitch up the mangled mess that was done at Salty Paws. The Vet was also incredibly concerned that Salty Paws didn't have any detailed medical documentation about the treatment they provided Tiggers. For human healthcare this would be considered MALPRACTICE. This place felt like they were more concerned with a cash grab than actually improving the health of my cat in swift, compassionate way. Tiggers (now my family cat adopted from my sister) got his stitches out today and is feeling much better.

At first before we took him in my husband called and asked if we should take him in because we didn't know if it was that serious but wanted to make sure because our dog is still a puppy six months old. The lady told us she would put us on hold for a brief moment and check with the vet to see if we should come in because she wasn't sure. We then proceeded to wait on the phone for 25 minutes on hold at 11 o'clock at night. Then the phone just randomly hang up so I was in a rage because I'm just trying to make sure my dog is OK so I called back. I asked politely if they were in fact, open and the same lady answered and said yes we are. I told her how we were just on the phone for 25 minutes and then got hung up on and she said nothing about that. She then told me to call poison control, which I then informed her was only for humans not for dogs. She told me I could " come in if I wanted to" which was absolutely not the response I was looking for. All I wanted to know is if my dog was going to be OK and if I should bring him in so I ended up bringing him in anyways. Once I was there, they told me it was going to be a several hour wait so we got ready and sat down. A lady came out did not even look or check it. My dog did not even touch him and told us that we could just go home. Again, not the answer I was looking for. We just drove 45 minutes here to the emergency vet so that my dog could get this rendered be fat out of his system so that he did not get sick. She said " well we could make him throw it up if you would like" I said yes, I would like you to do that since I just drove 45 minutes here. They did that they gave him medication brought him back out. And said it was probably good that we came and he threw it up because that would've made him severely sick. It's just very disappointing that I got terrible care there and I was the one who needed to push and shove to get them to make him throw up when it was so obviously needed. They clearly just did not want to be there and did not want to deal with any of the dogs. The throw up fee was $95 in the actual vet visit fee was $200. Also ridiculous. Next time I won't be taking my dog here I'll be figuring out the solution at home because these people obviously don't care about these dogs or your feelings

I've continued going mostly for the convenience of the location. However, I won't be returning due to how they handle stool sample kits. This lack of transparency and repeated upselling feels pushy, immoral, and unprofessional. It's disappointing and has ultimately led me to take my business elsewhere.

I made it clear that, given my dog's age and condition, my goal was to keep her comfortable until the end. Despite communicating those wishes, I felt pressured into additional X-rays and medications that resulted in a bill of over $600. Just two days later, my sweet dog had to be euthanized. When I called the office to schedule euthanasia, no accommodations or compassion were offered. I was simply told I could bring her in on Monday, meaning my suffering dog would have had to endure the entire weekend. The receptionist showed very little sympathy during one of the most difficult moments a pet owner can face. During my final visit, I witnessed the receptionist warmly tell another pet owner to "call us tomorrow with an update." As I was leaving with my gravely ill dog, I was casually told, "Hope your baby feels better." Given my dog's condition, those words felt dismissive and lacking genuine compassion. What hurt the most was feeling that empathy and concern were not extended equally to every client. Compassion should be shown to all pet owners, especially during end-of-life situations. After years of bringing my pets to this practice, I can no longer recommend Armistead Animal Hospital. They have lost my business, and I would travel elsewhere for veterinary care rather than return.

Then they recommend blood samples and other expensive tests to be done. I spent enough money and asked a friend who she takes her animals to. She suggested Magruder. My goodness what a difference. We got her shots and were in and out. Right before I left, as Dr Fedor and I were chatting (I highly recommend her, by the way), I mentioned the coughing and hard sneezing and my cat generally looking unwell. She said well, it's probably feline herpes. You can get meds on Amazon for like $20. So I took that advice. It's been about a month and I have my playful cat back!
