For over 3 years i didn't have to think about them and since then new plans and options exist. I started out by calling my Nelnet. 2 hour waits and 2 different answers as to what I should do. Each option presented had monthly payments of over $1800 per month!!! They couldn't tell me about consolidation or what those payments might be.... Students.gov was equally unhelpful. I am a business professor with an accounting degree, but trying to wade through all of the repayment programs available and figure out with is the best for me as someone who will be utilizing the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program proved more than I wanted to deal with. There is only one person who knows about student loans, and its not your loan servicer. Despite the intention that the Servicers would be the organization to help you structure your loans, when you call them, you are talking to a call center similar to your credit card company's answering service. They know almost nothing - don't trust your loan servicer to give you financial advice on loans (just think - your monthly loan payments might be more than that person makes in a month). Call Jan, and save yourself tons of money. I have looked for a "Jan Miller" for years, and I finally found him. If you have student loans, he is the person you need to consult with the day you get out of college. If you wait 5 years like me and my wife, you might just piss away $50,000 thinking it was going to apply towards PSLF qualifying payments (or a similar program), only to learn that you wasted all that time and money. My 10 year clock is starting soon, but only because I couldn't find Mr. Miller 5 years ago. I get so sick of consultants who use their "free consultation" to provide vague information so that you have to hire them. What's free about that? And then, once you hire them and are charging by the hour, they spend the first hour telling you about what they do, how they do it, where they research, what they can do for you, blah blah blah, without ever once speaking to your situation. I'm in this for professional advice, not your life story and not to just learn, after I've paid, how I could have done this myself. Jan didn't do this. Granted, I prepared in advance (had all my balances ready with their interest rates), but within 1 minute, we were already talking about my specific student loans and my options. He quickly guided me to a site online so I could get further info about my loans so that he could provide accurate information. He then gave me great advice on what to do and even helped me find a form online I need my employer to fill out that I knew nothing about and that my loan servicer had never notified me of. And he did all of this in under 15 minutes, so essentially within my free consultation time, and therefore for free. I'm not one to write a review unless some person/service is especially excellent, but I really don't want anyone else to go through this same experience so here are the facts: I spoke with Jan Miller in July about a financial plan that worked for me. I felt confident about the plan and trusted his judgment and paid for his student loan consultation services. A month later in August I reached out to his assistant Ronnie - Jan says this is the fastest way to reach him - for an update and realized I hadn't filled out a questionnaire (which wasn't brought to my attention until I asked for an update). I promptly sent over the questionnaire and Ronnie assured me that Jan was working on the next steps and would reach out to me soon. Another month went by and in September I sent another email requesting an update and asked if they were waiting on me for anything else. Ronnie thanked me for my patience and told me again that Jan was working on it. The next week I sent a follow up email expressing my concern because I didn't think an update or simple "still working on finding lenders" email was too much to ask. Ronnie heeded my concerns and told me Jan would check in with me tomorrow "either with the plan itself, or with an update". Two weeks passed and I heard nothing so I sent an email CC'ing (what is supposed to be) Jan's direct email and simply said that I needed to hear back from Jan by the end of the day or, sadly I will have to request a full refund. Unfortunately, but also expectedly, I didn't hear anything from either Jan or Ronnie for days so I sent a formal request for a full refund. The next day or so I called Jan's number on his website and left a message expressing the same concerns and requesting a refund. Now, almost another week later I have not received any response (or a refund) and realize there is nothing else to do but to warn others to not use this service. This is the first yelp review and definitely the first negative comment coming from me towards a professional business. This man is either a scammer or the most lazy unprofessional person ever. Please read and beware. First off, the negative reviews about Jan are all true. I was desperate and decided to focus on the positive ones and hired him in January, 2017. I had the 30 minute free conference call and he sounded very knowledgeable - so I thanked God I finally found some help and paid him upwards of $500 dollars for the business plan. He told me he was very busy and it would take a few weeks -- No problem. In late-ish March, I followed up, he said to me the same thing numerous people on here have said -- which is that I never filled out my questionnaire and as result he hadn't been able to get started on my plan. No one ever told me about this questionnaire, he didn't mention it during our first call at all. He also tried to play the whole your e-mail must not be working because we've been trying to reach you and you don't respond- that's a lie, and also, Mr. Miller has our phone number, he could have called. I asked him to forward me the messages he sent, and sure enough, he did not. It was now three months later and somehow this "questionnaire" fell through the cracks-- again, no problem, I understand he's busy and is helping a lot of people like me. So I fill it out the damn questionnaire (it's very time consuming- asks for lots of details) and send it back to him about late March or April. He now has it in his hands, he should get working on it right away. I was patient and followed up periodically, each time getting reassurances that he was working on it and it was on its way. Finally, in June, I tried calling and no one would pick up. I emailed and received no response- he went radio silent. I told him I believed I had been scammed and asked for a response immediately. About three days later, he responded, told me his business was not a scam, and that if I didn't value his time, I could go to someone else. After 6 months of not having a plan, instead of making right by me and reassuring me, he was offended that I didn't value his time!! Trying to be the better person, I explained that I did value his time, but that I really needed my plan because it had been six months since I paid for my plan. He reassured me it would come in two weeks. Guess what - July came and went and still no plan. In July, I told him I would sue him, and instead of sending me my business plan, he simply refunded my money 7 months later without a business plan. I told him that a refund wasn't enough - I hired him, I placed holds on my loans and was out of $500 for 7 months waiting on him like an idiot, at this point a refund is an insult. I told him how upset I was that he had played me for 7 months, and he said I had valid points and that he would make right and send me my business plan and that I would keep my refund. It is now late August, again radio silence, and no business plan. I don't know if this man is a professional scammer or took on more than he can handle- either way it's bad business. He is still taking time to give people free 30 minute calls -- I don't get it-- As I told him, how can you make time to take 30 minute calls with people who are prospective customers, but me-- a paying customer who gave you $500 dollars - you won't take the time to complete my business plan??? This is only a summary, the back and forth was extensive and each promised went by unfulfilled. Again, I will not be shocked if he responds to this review with lies, but read between the lines, how is the customer to blame, at all in the situation. He has time to take new calls and respond to yelp, but no business plan. Also, I have pictures and copies of our emails, if anyone wants to take a look, just ask. Also, if you have been scammed by Mr. Miller please reach out to me -- with enough people this can turn into a class action litigation. Also if you read the positive reviews, it's mostly from people who seem to have received the 30 minute free call, which they are very grateful for. This man took my money, 8 months of my time, and has my personal information. I called Jan to help get my husband's medical student debt under control. I'd previously handled my own law school debt, but HIS debt was more complex than I could handle. I'm really glad we did. Turns out, there is a ton of complexity to PSLF programs, IBR, etc that I wasnt previously aware of.
