This is the only Asian goods market I will shop at because they have everything I need, and the owners are such a lovely couple! So friendly and sweet! Tiny but sufficient Asian market in town. It's amazingly clean and packs a lot into a small space. That being said, like other Yelpers have mentioned, sometimes it's hard to find things, and the prices on some items are hard to find. When I came by this given Saturday, there was also a huge line of people waiting to check out, which was daunting. That being said, I couldn't find the one thing I was looking for: dumpling wrappers. So far my best time in an Asian market in CT. Tons of product with a seemingly focus on hotpot broths, frozen buns and lots and lots of Asian snack and candy. I also found candied tangerine peels which I love to use in desserts and lots of dried mushrooms for homemade hot and sour soup. Overall- pretty clean and some prices were very reasonable while others seemed a bit high but I was always able to find a lower priced alternative. Spice aisle was great and staples such as shaxiao (sp?) wine and dark soy sauce also easily available. Ended up with some snacks, frozen red bean paste buns, frozen scallion pancakes, dried mushrooms, spices and a whole lot of snacks! Will be back for sure. read more

New Haven isn't the best place to live if you're looking for Asian groceries (especially if you don't have a car). But Million is your best bet. They have the freshest groceries and widest selection of veggies. (Don't think about trying Hong Kong. It's a total crapshoot.) Unlike Hong Kong Market's meticulously price-stickered items, very few things here have price tags. But if you're stuck here you really have no choice. Oh well. They have a ginormous selection of natto, as well as a diverse variety of rice and grains. They also boast an extensive stock of hot pot ingredients for anybody who wants to cook at home. There is a credit card fee (no minimum, but 3.5% is what the credit card companies charge the store, so they pass that onto us). read more

Be careful when shopping here. They like to overcharge/overweigh for items or to add charges to your bill. Sometimes the total on the receipt does not match the sum of the item prices. Their homemade POS system is pretty suspicious and they put no identifiers on the itemized receipt so you can't check prices. My total is always higher than expected, especially when I have lots of items. I have had to keep track of my total on my own calculator when they are scanning items. It's pretty predatory as they know people would rather just pay the total than check through every price and item. Also, many stocked items are expired and they won't warn you or remove them. read more

This place has a great selection of fresh produce as well as well-priced vegetarian proteins like soy puffs, tofu, seitan, seitan puffs, etc. I can't find these vegetarian proteins anywhere else but here. They also. have great noodles, spices, and ingredients to make good sauces. They always have a great selection of Chinese greens like Chinese broccoli, snow pea tips, bok choy, and more. Been here a couple times. Convinced it's not the store for us. The women that work there during the day have attitudes. One nearly had a fit when my wife asked where something was. (The store has no other customers at the time) Don't customers buy the products and therefore pay your salary? Hmm Prices are higher than other markets near by and choice is less. Of the handful of Asian markets in New Haven, J-Mart is easily the biggest, and yay yay yay, the closest to my house. The place is Chinese-run but offerings cover all types of Asian cuisine and snacking needs. Check out the selection of Asian ice cream, and grab the one that looks like a wafer goldfish - it is stuffed with red bean and vanilla ice cream and makes me oh, so happy. Prices are reasonable. The service can be a little spotty. They don't get too many customers at a time, and I have taken my groceries to an empty register more than once. Still, none of this has reached the level of annoying, and I really have no complaints about the place. I think I'm going to start getting my seafood here. You can't get much fresher than live, right? I've heard stories of the owners of Royal Palace across the street running in frantically and demanding lobsters. I enjoy the fish there, so it's got to be good enough to eat at home. Not that I've ever used it, but there's free parking at the Chatterton lot on Orange and George. Happy shopping. read more

Was looking for Takekomi Gohan packs which were impossible to find despite combing through the entire store three times. I am quite sure it's hidden there somewhere, but because the place is so disorganized or I couldn't figure out the system to look for it, we unfortunately never found it. The store minder was a Chinese gentleman who would not have understood my Japanese I'm guessing, so I didn't ask him. However I did come across some very neat Japanese style rice crackers and snacks which I wasn't really looking for, but when I found them really awoke my love for those snacks which I used to buy in abundance during my college days as a student in Japan. So I was delighted. I would be happy to go back there again whenever I am at IKEA. So I highly recommend the trip. Just wish the shop and items were a little more organized. read more

Impressed by the quality and variety of the offerings at this mom and pop Asian grocery store in the New Haven downtown! If you need Asian food, this is your best shot in New Haven. It's got Chinese vegetables like on choy , fresh tofu, yellow noodles, and a variety Japanese mushrooms in produce section. In addition there's a large selection of Asian sauces ranging from oyster sauce to bulgogi sauce to murin. There's also a great selection of frozen foods to choose from like dumplings and pork buns. A big draw back is that the store has a limited variety of meats and seafood. I am sad to say this but I got Japanese rice from this place, and I was washing the rice and something long and white came out. I realized that there were actually lots of little worms inside the bag of rice. this made me want to vomit and never want to eat rice again. I definetly won't be buying from here again.... not sure how fresh things are. read more

This store is classy. You can park in the lot to the left of the store or on street parking. The lady who runs the register is very friendly. They don't have large carts, only baskets but they do have basket holders with wheels for you to put your baskets in that way you don't have to lug it around. Wooden floors, overhead labels. Has a bathroom inside as well. Most items are not clearly priced, and I do not see a lot of noodle option. One of my items I saw was 1.99 but the lady rang it up as 2.25...ok I was too impartial to ask her about it (but that gives you a sense about their label system, seems like they just ring up whatever price). If you are looking to shop for Asian staples, you would need to hit up another Asian market in conjunction to this place to make it be adequate. read more

Decent, clean, Chinese grocery and market with a nice selection of very fresh produce. Always stop here on our visits to New Haven (for the pizza!) to pick up some greens and mushrooms as they are priced well and quality is high. I like this store because 1) its got nice old wooden floors; 2) good selection of veggies and dry goods; 3) always seems clean and no odors. Though there is a butcher counter with some fresh meats in the back - as well as some live fish in tanks -- the selection's rather limited and you're likely better off at other stores or standard groceries for these items. read more

It is very clean in there unlike other asian market around. The price might be a little bit higher than others, but they do have products from Japan which most of other markets have limited items. I like there because it is clean. Everything is in order, nice display. They do have fresh seafood. They also have small daily use items for kitchen, and gift sets of Asian dishes. The owners here and HORRIBLE people. My family has been giving them a chunk of business due to our restaurant a few blocks away and these a holes had the audacity to scream and literally tell my mom "to get the f*ck out my store" all because my mom simply wanted to pay using her debit card instead of the usual cash. They angrily told her that its wholesale price, cash only, and that they dont knownhow many times they have to tell her. My mom said she did not have cash today but is willing to pay extra to use her debit card. SHE WAS WILLING TO PAY EXTRA. AND THESE ASININE PEOPLE CURSED HER OUT. Ive personally NEVER had a good experience their. The owners literally dont give a sh*t about their customers and will make you wait at the counter for 20+ minutes bc theyre in the back room doing god knows what. And when they finally come out to ring you out have the worse damn attitude in the world. These people dont deserve to be in business and no one should ever step foot in there. read more

I came here looking for kimchi(cabbage and radish), black bean noodles, fire noodles, oden(fish balls) and gochujang( red pepper paste). I was so excited that the food I love was here and so close to me. I was treated well and with respect. And there were a lot of choices and selections. I highly recommend this place. The line was kinda long to check out but I understand why. When you love different types of Asian foods it's worth the wait. Plus it's next to Miso. One of my favorite sushi spots. read more

The shop is very well organized, although it's small it's organized in a way that is very efficient, stroll down the three aisle and you are done. The checkout however, is what it is lacking. Very lovely market and yes it is clean as a whistle. Charming place with a ton of choices from groceries to meat to produce. I bought a large amount of staples ( two bags full) for $30 so I think the prices are decent. They have a ton of snacks and Asian "junk" food which is fun to try. I was only able to go here once but I thought it was a nice little shop. The wood flooring made it feel quaint. Everyone inside seemed friendly too. The other thing was the parking wasn't great. We parked in a spot that was supposed to be for the restaurant across the street. Luckily no one gave a crap. Or we just didn't get caught. It also seemed like this store didn't stock many Japanese items other than snacks and candy. But the ones they had were pretty good, not going to lie. J-Mart used to be my choice of Asian market in the New Haven area but NO longer. Store used to be owned by two families; Taiwanese and Korean. They carried both Korean and Chinese (specifically Taiwanese) brands. Though the prices were a bit higher than usual, the store was well run and well worth going. Not to mention they also had AWESOME (and I say this having drank many many many bubble teas) bubble tea. However, it's been sold to a new family (can't remember if it was late last year or early this year) and it has gone severely downhill ever since. I was actually there during the transition and the previous owners had more or less warned me about this change (or rather said "they don't know anything" some fightin' words there...). They don't carry the same products and actually carry LESS than before (this is a medium/small-ish store as is, why would you want to carry less?). Products are not as fresh and the staff are not as friendly (not to mention unprofessional). Their baked goods are often not fresh and are actually smushed. They no longer carry any of the ready-made foods either (used to have Korean/Chinese small foods/zhongzhi sitting out front on a table) and you can tell the canned goods/snacks have been sitting out for a while (dusty on the tops). Not to mention the bubble tea is AWFUL. Prices are still the around the same-but there is NO reason for it now. OH and they're changing the name (ripped out the J-mart sign out front). The ramen selection is still alright. That's about it. read more

You know, I generally don't like Asian markets for a variety of reasons (often the overpowering smell of raw fish, the general clutter, sometimes a dusty/poorly maintained feel), but this has none of that! It's a relative pleasure to shop in; the produce is cheap and flavorful and surprisingly stays fresh for quite some time. I'm usually able to get what I need when I need it and I like the way it turns out. Some specific notes: the avocados here are actually quite good. The bottled garlic is a bit meh. The onions, while giant, are extremely strong for white onions. The "Chinese cilantro" is quite good, as is the long hot pepper. Overall -- strongly recommended. read more

A great little Asian market in New Haven. I can find almost everything I need to cook Chinese, Japanese, and Korean dishes at home, and I much prefer the layout and atmosphere of Million to Hong Kong (the other Asian grocery in NH). A little overpriced, but considering the dearth of good Asian groceries in most of Connecticut, this place is definitely a godsend for the college student missing their parents' home cooking. read more

Re-visiting family I found myself eating great Italian food and of course the world's best pizza (Sally's). But craving sushi made me want to find a market where I could buy sushi-grade fish and have a feast of my own. As I did my research I was pleasantly surprised. J-Mart proved to be an amazing Asian market that had just about anything you could possibly wish for. I called first to ask if they had sushi-grade salmon or tuna and they said yes, both. So I drove downtown and remembered the New Haven Colliseum being in that vicinity, but was pleased at how nicely renovated that area was. The market was super clean, the gentleman was really cordial, helping me find everything I needed. The fish was frozen as I had expected and very reasonably priced ($8 / lb for salmon and $9/lb for tuna). The produce was excellent and I left there with everything I needed to have a wonderful Japonese dinner (I stopped at Formosa Fusion on Middletown Avenue to buy some sticky rice ... Didn't have the patience to make it and was too hungry to wait!) ... So we made some soy paper handrolls, Miso soup ( instant was great) ... And drank a few Sapporo beers... Nice dinner... Love this market. The produce is super cheap and pretty good. Bulk tofu is a steal. Compared to the other popular asian market in New Haven, the service here is awesome.
