I love going into this market. All my favorite Asian goodies and snacks and kitchen essentials in one place. They have my favorite brand of dried mango (Phillipine Brand is the only way to go) and a great diversity of noodles. This is also the place I go to get fresh shrimp in town whenever I'm having people over for dinner. Whenever I am struggling to find something, the staff have always been quick to help. I'm also writing because Tom was so gracious today! I had lost my special Asian-fit sunglasses yesterday, and when I called the store to ask if I might have dropped them somewhere in the store, Tom sent me a photo so I could confirm that they were mine before I went to pick them up! I so appreciate his kindness and the fact that this authentic Chinese grocery store exists within walking distance of downtown. Okay, this store looked a bit shoddy from the outside but I decided to give it a chance. They have a selection of various Asian goods here. I got some ramen packs (which tasted atrocious..), sauces, and dumplings (which were fine). However the worst part was that a sauce I got was **more than 1 year past expiration date**!!! I only noticed when I got home and had to come back to the store (and the staff were nice about returning it), but I'd recommend making sure you pay attention to when stuff here expires if you shop here not to end up in the same situation as me. read more

There were so many interesting items in here I wish I knew what they were! I had a list written in Chinese and when I was lead to the items, they were pretty easy to correlate to their English counterparts. All the other mysterious, cryptic items, however, I guess those will have to wait until subsequent visits. I personally never considered a place like this for fresh noodles but they had them in the cold food section. They also had a really nice variety of baked goods, which translate well into any language - delicious and sweet! Downstairs are vegetables, housewares and I don't know what else as it felt as if I were transported right to Hong Kong with all the hustle and bustle. I grabbed a ginger clove and made my way upstairs. Love how the $0.10/bag signs are all over. It was a long time coming but at least it's here now! read more

Though it be small, yet it be fierce. I'm writing as a non-Asian fan of snack foods, so I'm not an expert on the authenticity or completeness of Asian ingredients. I am, however, very enthusiastic about the entire aisle of snack foods, which usually includes both peanut butter and cinnamon mochi. There's also a really good brand of Chinese egg cakes, a range of exciting applications of red bean paste, and the usual marshmallow and gummy candies and Pocky. Labeling often does not include English, but snack packaging usually gives a lot of clues as to what you've got. There's also a substantial spice section. I need to get more confident with interpreting frozen food packages, as I really want bao but am not sure the bao really want me. The housewares section in the basement is small but helpful -- I finally found an affordable mortar and pestle! read more

Beggars can't be choosers. HKM is not as big, bright, or cheap as some Asian food markets in the Hartford area, but in a bind, you can get some classics and staples here. I got some great snacks, candies, and bao (freezer section!) from HKM on a weekday evening. There were about 10 other people in the store at this time. I wasn't so excited about the payment experience. The cashier was not very nice when she answered another person's questions about whether there were more fresh ramen noodles, and she barked at me for trying to use a credit card for a purchase under $20. (Where's the sign?) It was a little reminiscent of my travels in China, which was amusing, but not exactly what I was expecting during this shopping trip. I figure this store will be a good spot to get in and get out when I have a specific purchase in mind. read more

Your typical Asian grocery store. I am vegetarian, so I don't buy the fish so i can't speak to that. Their bulk tofu is cheap and fabulous. Their selection of noodles is great & cheap. I love the frozen section of dim sum. Green ice tea ice cream = YUM. They have a good selection of curry pastes & spices. The dessert selection I'm not sure about b/c I'm not much of an expert on Chinese/Asian desserts. Downstairs they have cheap housewares stuff (like most Asian markets!), and I actually bought tons of stuff b/c it was cheaper than Target (haha). I have to disagree with the other poster who was saying it was a negative thing that they stock so many products---I can find everything I want at this store. How is that a negative? This store has more product than any store I went to in SF, and I consider it a bonus. I spent almost $100 the first time I went there. Gotta love your Asian market. Hong Kong Market is a convenient stop for all the Asian grocery staples. While it's not where I can get all of my grocery shopping done, I'm thankful to have it within walking distance of where I work and next door to where I've been getting my hair cut. Prices are a little higher than other Asian markets for prepackaged items, but there are some good deals on meats and produce. On my most recent visit, I was able to find all the fresh ingredients for a soup I was craving on a chilly Sunday. While here, I also made sure to stock up on those items I use a lot, like limes, cilantro, and ginger. I noticed a few people grabbing shrimp, which you can pick yourself from boxes of ice at decent prices per pound. I made a mental note to come here the next time I need shrimp. Note: There is a $20 minimum for credit cards and $10 minimum for debit. Also parking may be a little tricky on the street, but the lot on the corner appears to be unattended on Sundays. 1/19/16 Update: I'm told there's parking behind the store. read more

This isn't the only place in town to buy Chinese groceries: the fish market on the corner of State and Humphrey also sells them--but its selection is much smaller. There is also a very small shop on Orange street, north of Trumbull, which is more selective about what it stocks. This place does have the largest selection that I have been able to find, but it is not my favorite place to shop. As is common in Asian markets, my biggest complaint about this store is that it does not seem particularly selective about what it stocks. Packaged foods imported from Asian countries tend to be incredibly cheap, but the quality is highly variable and it is not uncommon to get stuff that it outright awful if you just pick random things off the shelf. I think this store would do a lot better if the managers would carefully select only one or two high-quality brands from each of the products offered, and stock only these best brands. That would give me the confidence to buy more things here that I haven't tried. Also, this store just doesn't stock a lot of the stuff that I know I like; there are certain brands of tea, soy sauce, and chili sauce that I have decided are my favorites, and they're nowhere to be found in this store. Overall, the tea selection here is poor; they stock mostly low-end boxes of teabags. The produce selection here is alright but the prices aren't very cheap. I live next to the fish market on State, which has a similar selection of produce and so I usually just shop there. There's a lot of produce you can't find here...no watercress, and no Asian basil, no recao/culantro, three serious omissions--I'd keep coming back for these products if they would stock them. I don't think this shop would survive in a typical big city's Chinatown. The managers need to get on the quality control and critically examine what products they are stocking. Their prices are so low and their competitors in the neighborhood have such high-prices; they would do well to stock higher-end merchandise. read more

When I was young, my grandma would truck me off to a Chinese market in Sacramento, CA which was about an hour away from our home. Ever since then it has always been a great pleasure to find conveniently located Asian markets, because they carry things you just cannot find anywhere else: plum sauce, dried mushrooms, whole bamboo shoots, Chinese tea, Chinese greens, salted black beans ... the list goes on. Hong Kong Market lives up to about half of the expectations that I have for Chinese markets. They have just about every prepackaged items one might need for Asian cooking along with a decent selection of veggies, but they are lacking some fresh products. They do not provide fresh noodles, cooked meat products (such as char su, roasted pork, or duck), or live fish. Nonetheless, considering where it is located, I am still satisfied. read more

Well..it is the biggest asian market around New Haven. They do have a lot of items and mostly from China, but also from korea, vietnam, Thai, and very few from Japan. The whole store looks very typical asian market. Not that clean and not that in order, but it has a lot of items. This is one of the only places in New Haven to get Asian groceries and since their recent renovation, the market is SO much nicer than it used to be. To put things in perspective, it used to be a one-floor, smallish market that was rather dingy and dusty. Now it's much bigger and well-lit and, more importantly, the produce looks a lot fresher. HK market carries lots of essential supplies for Chinese cooking, from numbing spice to a variety of oyster sauces. They also have a decent selection of frozen dumplings and snacks. The restaurant next door has also been significantly renovated and serves dim sum and surprisingly authentic dishes. read more

We were driving to Martha Vineyard and realize that we need to buy a few Asian Ingredients before getting there. We yelp this place out and stop by after lunch. The place was small but they have everything you would need to cook asian food. We walked around and got everything that we can think of but the only major disappointment was the price. I love this place. My go to in new haven for Asian foods. I'm from nyc and markets like this are common there so it's nice to have a familiar place locally. They have a great selection of dry and shelf stable foods, dumplings and frozen foods and there's also sea food and vegetables downstairs, though I will say their vegetable selection is a bit underwhelming and freshness is hit or miss. This store sells almost everything I need when it comes to East & South East Asian food. It's a chaos in there, and you often need to look hard in every corner, behind every jar and bag to search for something (palm sugar was impossible to locate without a store worker's help). Fresh produce isn't always fresh (but hey, I found garlic chives and chive flower, which are so hard to get anywhere else). Prices are very reasonable. read more

this place is good, only by virtue of being the sole place in new haven where you can buy chinese groceries. if it weren't for that fact, i wouldn't keep returning. basically, the only things i buy here are mangoes, vegetables, and occaisionally milk and eggs. although, you have to be careful with those perishables, as i don't think they maintain the best storage/refrigeration conditions. it's not great, and you'll often find slightly rotten or severely bruised produce, but they are way cheaper than nica's and provide fresh-ish produce at a closeby location for all new haven-ites whose feet are their sole source of transportation. ok, and one more thing. i know it sucks to stand around at a cash register all day, having to deal with customers, but the woman who is always there... well, she is kind of unpleasant and packs your groceries very roughly. she might be the only bagger i know who thinks it's a good idea to slam down a carton of eggs over mangoes. but to the rest of the world, that is just improper handling! but who am i to criticize. i continue to shop here despite the lack of quality, because i'm weak-willed and oftentimes Desperate for faux-fresh groceries. read more

This market is bigger than the other New Haven Chinese groceries, but IMO, is the lowest in quality. The fresh produce selection is very limited and tucked away in the basement -- which is air-less and hot, not very conducive to keeping produce fresh (even if they are in refrigerated bins). The fish and meats are also kept down in this uncomfortably warm space and although the fish are iced down, one can't help feeling that the fish is probably just not worth taking a chance on! Indeed, my observations of the fish this past weekend was that they were NOT fresh -- all the eyes were very dull, and the gills were grayish. The meats are kept in an enclosed refrigerated counter, but two things turned me off: 1) a fly was buzzing around inside the counter; 2) if a fly was buzzing around in a refrigerated counter, then how refrigerated was it really? Stick with their large selection of dry goods on the upper floor -- those are probably fine. read more

Good place to buy staples for Asian cooking. A huge noodle section, lots of spices, whole and ground (as well as blends like Five Spice), rice, excellent quality sesame oils at great prices, rice wine vinegar, bottled sauces, canned items (water chestnuts, straw mushrooms, etc.) and much more. Their tea prices are inexplicably high but other than that, I find their pricing to be quite reasonable, much lower than at health food stores. I do not shop for produce, meats or fish there, so I cannot comment on those. This is my go-to store for Asian cooking; takeout is expensive for my budget and high in calories, so I enjoy my Asian cooking at home. They also accept EBT. read more

THEY WILL TOW YOUR CAR FROM THEIR PARKING LOT!!!! DON'T GO TO THIS PLACE!!!!! I just went to the market to buy an envelope, and parked my car in their parking lot for 5 minutes. The owner and his wife stopped me when I got back to my car. They claimed that I'm using their parking lot to do business with other stores. I showed them the envelope I bought from their store. They claim that I cannot park in the lot if I don't spend $60 in their store or restaurant. Then I told the other guy who just entered the parking lot about this rule, the owner immediately withdraw the rule of $60 minimum spending with that customer. Then they threat to tow my car if I park there again to go to other stores, which I already made clear I was not. I asked for an apology for being misunderstood and being threatened for something I didn't do and will not do, they said all they said is a "kind reminder"! I will never go to their store or restaurant to get more of such "kindness" ! I would have given a ZERO STAR if there is such an option. read more

Waited 15 minutes at the meat counter for someone to take my order. The only worker available was busy helping another customer by the seafood. They should have one person at each counter - not one person for both. Finally got fed up with waiting and walked out. Service is no good here. Go to Million Asian Market on Orange for your Asian grocery needs. Although it is smaller than Hong Kong Grocery, Million Asian Market has fresher produce and better service. read more

I was a regular customer of the main Hong Kong Market in NYC when I lived there, and it's nice to have a satellite store in New Haven. It's a fifth of the size of the original, but they carry most basic items. I like shopping here. For a smaller space, they manage to fit in a large variety of goods. Prices are a bit inflated but better than A Dong's. As a bonus, they accept SNAP/EBT. read more

The Store was pretty good before, but now is running down hill. Basement session is very dirty. The price is OK since you save the transportation $$ to go out to NYC. Be careful when you buy items, some items are expired but still selling in the store. I shop last week there and bought a box of moon cake, found out it is Fake and immitation of a Hong Kong Brand. This place carries a decent amount of all of my Asian meal needs. I was able to get a fresh cat fish and red snapper. The fishes were both delicious and I was even able to buy a few more things for dinner. I live in New London and there isn't any Asian markets here worth going to. read more

This store is small and quaint but surprisingly well stocked. I come here once in awhile with my friend, our class is only a 5 minute walk from the store. The prices are expected, not too expensive but more than average food from america. They have a really good selection of drinks, snacks, teas, and frozen goods. read more

Chinatown comes to New Haven... OK it's not the City but this is the best we have got and it's pretty darn good. Be grateful.
