Amana was founded by German imigrants, so I should expect good German food, right... Lucky for me, my assumptions were correct. We got there late in the day just before closing but the staff was so incredibly nice they allowed us to order dinner and let us take our time in finishing our meal and expierence. We ordered some delicious German staples to go along with the very good beer they were also serving. The food was really goos all fresh and homemade. Prices were also very good and the building the resturant was housed in was not only historic but absolutely beautiful. Came in town for an event and came to the Brau Haus to watch the football game. The bar area is small but service was great and locals were friendly. Beer selection was good and the menu looked great. We shared an order of reuben eggs which were good. We saw an order of wings come out and they looked amazing. Absolutely amazing. It was so much food and so cheap. My schnitzel sandwich was like triple the size of the pretzel bun (see picture). The amazing sauce for the sweet potatoes fries was so good I even put it on my schnitzel sandwich. The beer was pretty good too. I recommend the schlid amber and Iowa pale ale. I went to Millstream Brau Haus with family and friends after going to the Renaissance Festival in Amana this year and had an average experience. There craft beer was okay but nothing to brag about. I ordered some wings to eat and they were okay but kind of dry. My friends said that their food was average as well. Service was poor as it took forever for us to even get a waiter to come to our table and even once we put our order in, it was like 30 minutes before we got our food. It was a nice summer day so we sat on their patio, which was nice. I willing to come back to Millstream to see if service is better next time. The pretzel I had was great, but the gyro was very bland. That was kind of odd as they said on the menu that is was a best-seller and specialty of the restaurant. I guess I'll something more German next time! My beer was pretty good but it was a special that I don't expect to find again. The hostess was terrible, forgetting who we were, not communicating with the crowed accumulating in the foyer, and not acknowledging anyone that walked through the door. Recently stopped by the Millstream Brau Haus while doing some Christmas shopping in the Amanas. It was a busy night and there was a small wait to be seated. Normally this wouldn't be a problem, but the woman running the hostess area was very inattentive, almost causing us to leave. We were there for at least 5 minutes before she acknowledged us or the other couple of groups that just walked in. Finally, she did take our names (and then forgot who we were literally two minutes later when she called our name). Not a good first impression. After being seated, the dinner took a turn for the better. The waitress was friendly and helpful with the questions we had. I ordered a seasonal Caramel Chocolate Bock to drink - much more flavorful than expected! The caramel was intense. Would drink again. My friend and I ordered the Riesenbrezel (pretzel) with beer cheese as an appetizer and found the pretzel to be very well made. It pulled apart nicely, good flavor, just the right amount of salt. My schnitzel entree was tasty - a light breading, cooked properly. The 'German home fries' are definitely the choice to make over french fries for a side and I enjoyed the bed of spätzle that the schnitzel was on. We sat at the bar and was reluctantly greeted by a bartender who immediately acted like we were a burden. Then since she was too stressed out she asked her helper to take care of us. He came over, asked what we wanted and walked away after we asked for a drink that they didn't have. We drove 2 hours to spend the day here and walked out within 3 minutes of being treated like trash. Such a shame because the atmosphere seemed cool. Don't ask for anything besides the house beer or you might get shat on like we did. Going to the golf course here to try and recover a fun Saturday. read more

We were visiting through HH with our camper van. They offer free boon docking. We started with a flight to taste their beers.. my fave was a marshmallow beer. They don't offer any dinners just sandwiches and salads, plus appetizers. I had chicken salad with sweet potato fries. Hubby had an awesome (shareable) wedge salad with a schnitzel appetizer.. huge servings.. we had a cream puff for dessert..it was like a day old pastry, but the end of the day probably didn't help this delicate choux. We recently visited Millstream. It was 7p and we were greeted by a gruff, stout bartender. Although it didn't seem busy, neither full we had to wait for a table to be cleaned. Our waitress and service was pretty poor for an empty bar. She was ultimately fixated on the locals that was drinking heavily at the bar. We ordered an appetizer, cheese balls, but they must have been sitting awhile as they were cold and were delivered with the rest of our meals, which were ordered much later. We had planned to try a beer with our meal, but once we got our food, we never saw our waitress again. She dropped our food and vanished. We finally had to walk up to the bar to pay our tab after an extended wait and no service. The cheeseballs were inedible as they had been sitting too long. Cold. The cheeseburger seemed that of a preformed patty. Certainly NOT IA beef deliciousness! The German fries were cold. Straight from the fridge, like potato salad. I tried a bite of my partners Schnitzel and it was way over cooked and cold. Missing the genuine hospitality and good beef that Iowa is known for. Seemed like a big miss. read more

Stopped for a Sunday night dinner. Husband ordered the poutine for his meal. It came cold - gravy was cold, meat was cold, cheese curds were cold. When the waiter came and asked how things were, we told him the poutine was cold. He walked away without saying a word. We assumed he was going to get another one. 15 mins later he comes back, looks at the poutine on the table, and asked "did you want that warmed up?" At that point, others were done eating so we said no. The waiter said, "I asked the owner and he said there wasn't a reason for it to be cold." We repeated that it was and he said, "it shouldn't have been I saw them take meat off the grill." We were not going to argue any more so we just repeated that it was cold and he walked away. The waiter then came back with the bill - which included the poutine and said, "do you want a to-go box so you can take him home and warm it up?" We were shocked. We ended up having to pay $15 for a meal that wasn't edible....and was left on the table. Needless to say, we won't be back. Never been to a place where you couldn't eat your meal, they didn't address it (and in fact argued with you about it) and still had to pay for it. read more

Millstream Brau Haus has a large, open area with amazing, exposed beams that showcase the history of the building as well as that of canned beer nestled into them. There's a small loft, but most of the dining area is open with only the rustic supports providing faint privacy. TVs are perched in a few spots throughout, primarily playing sports. Service was acceptable. We ended up having two different servers and each did a fine job. The food was good, but not immensely exciting. I had the brat with coleslaw and... something else that I can't recall. Each was tasty, but the beer won me over. The selection isn't immense, but I liked their take on each, particularly the Iowa Pale Ale. Millstream is a nice change from the more traditional spots in town. read more

He keep our drinks tended too and provided everything we wanted. The food. Fantastic, very moist on the inside the pork was very tasty. The fries were amazing with garlic and bacon. I will be making them at home. The local beer was full of flavor. The pretzel was great with mustard. The cost:::: as for the price, it was very nice. Knowing it's a tourist attraction here the price seemed very reasonable and with portion size it was totally a great place to eat. All in all I felt very full and satisfied here. I even had leftovers. This was without a doubt the best place I have been to on this vacation. I definitely recommend coming in for some fine food. Great lunch! A small group of us stopped by for lunch a couple days before Oktoberfest. Most of us ordered schnitzel of some sort. Some had sandwiches and others had plated meals. Wife and I shared a Matterhorn style chicken schnitzel dinner. We also shared a cup of the Goulash and a cup of the Beer Cheese Potato Soup. The schnitzel was great as was the soup and goulash. If you like German potato salad, and you like fries, you need to hitch up your wagon and get down to the Amana. It's a small but really flavorful menu - and while I didn't have the Schnitzel, my friends did and they loved it. We decided to go to the Amana Colonies to pick up a groomsmen gift. I had never been there before so it was an adventure! It was pretty busy, but not surprising since it was a nice Saturday. We were able to get a seat right away, around 12:30. We ordered the pretzel appetizer... let me just say, I will no longer be able to eat a pretzel without comparing it to theirs! It was soo delicious. The crust was crispy, but the inside was doughy and soft. After that first bite you just want to sign... which is exactly what I did. I ordered the Bratwurst since I wasn't so hungry and my friend ordered the Schnitzel. The bratwurst is what they make at the Amana Colonies and it was very juicy and flavorful. I do have to say, it was like any other Bratwurst in terms of taste. The schnitzel that my fiend got was HUGE and served on a pretzel bun. The schnitzel was very flavorful and definitely melted in your mouth. He ended up cutting of a portion of the schnitzel so that he could eat it with the pretzel bun. The service was amazing and very fast and friendly. All the staff was so cheerful and nice. The prices for the food that we got weren't terrible for the amount of food we got. Walking in the Brau Haus Reminds me of authentic German Beer halls - wooden beams, wooden tables, cottage like, etc. our server greeted us immediately and recommended the pretzel which we went with. It came quickly and was ginormous!! I LOVE pretzels and have tried them at many establishments... this by far was the best pretzel I have ever had!! Served with creamy, warm beer cheese (homemade) and I also utilized the German mustard at the table. My best friend and I devoured that pretzel! When ordering for lunch I was a little disappointed as they did not have many options - limited to a brat, pork tenderloin, burger, gyro, or two salads. I went with the apple walnut salad which had homemade cranberry vinaigrette dressing. It was a good portion and flavorful - the dressing was very good!
