As North Liberty residents, we are grateful to have restaurants with character and personality like Tin Roost! In fact, this restaurant holds a special place in my wife and I's hearts as it was the location of our first date. During our most recent visit to Tin Roost, we ordered the pork tenderloin with broccoli (7.9/10) and a burger with fries (7.5/10)! We also ordered one of a few ciders that Tin Roost was offering on tap. Honestly, the food is pretty middle of the pack. The star of the show was surprisingly the roasted broccoli side. This place is good to grab a bite to eat with friends. I hear they have a backroom that is good for meetings, but I usually sit at the bar or a table. We got the double smash burger and added an egg - it was amazing. Seriously a great burger (would probably get without egg in the future). We also got the tater tot skillet, which was also good. We also got a burrito (not pictured) it comes drenched in queso and is kind of hard to eat, in the future will probably ask for the queso on the side. Portions are large. I am always a bit shocked at the price at the end of the meal, it is pretty expensive. I also don't like that you never get to see your itemized bill, the server uses the mobile payment machines and all you see is the overall total on the screen. It's Lent, so time to take advantage of fish specials. We shared the catfish special. The catfish was okay, but not spectacular. The fries however were the bomb. Came for dinner the other day to celebrate a birthday. The food was reallyyy good but it is pricey. For the atmosphere of the establishment I would say overpriced. The service this time also wasn't as great as it has been the last few times I've been. We had to remind the waitress of drink orders a few times, as well as boxes for leftovers. (I've worked service and so I understand it can get busy so I don't want to fault her for that). However, if people in our party had questions or wanted to check when the drinks or boxes would be by she wouldn't answer and walk away and we would be waiting another 20 minutes. If the food wasn't so good I'd probably not recommend coming here due to the prices and service. Easy to find location, we had a group of 12 people and had a very nice private room. It was nice we were separated from the main dining room so we could actually hear conversation without straining. The service was great our server was very good. Attentive but not annoying and was very accommodating. We had many appetizers which were all tasty. Haven't been back to this place for over a year. The last time we came the food was not good at all, but today their food was very good! Recommend ordering: - Sweet potato hash (better than the Huevos rancheros if you like a good hash) - Mac and cheese - Unicorn waffle (not sickeningly sweet but if you like sweeter then try something else) Cons: Their drinks aren't the best. You can tell their coffee is way too watered down for the cold brew. I got an espresso martini and it was 90% martini and the espresso tasted like watered down coffee. Overall, a much better experience than the last time we came! Their food have improved but their drinks could use some work, especially their cocktails and coffee. Great spot in Iowa! We were in Cedar Rapids for the weekend and this was about a 25 minute drive from our hotel. They have a great beer selection on tap and a fairly varied menu. After a weekend in Iowa City I was pleasantly surprised by the much more reasonable prices! I got the Turkey Club sandwich, which was a bit greasy but in a yummy way. The fries are amazing - super crispy with a nice seasoning blend. I really wanted to try the brussels sprouts appetizer but what with heading to the airport it didn't seem practical. As other reviews have mentioned, the main downside to this place is that it's very echo-y and loud inside. I was with two older people with hearing aids and even though it wasn't very busy inside, they couldn't hear much. We should have opted for the outdoor patio. The environment and property are great. Whether you are inside or out at the large, open patio, there is a cool vibe for relaxing and enjoying the company you are with. It can get a bit loud inside, though, so try to sit outside if you are looking to have a deeper conversation. The food is fine enough. You can fill up on something uniquely different from what you make at home. I, personally, have struggled to find anything that knocks my socks off and leaves me craving more, though. There have been numerous changes to the menu over the past 5 years with a number of staples that have stood the test of time. I feel as though a smaller menu may allow the opportunity to really focus on doing a few things really well instead of doing a bunch of things okay or slightly above average. It's all a matter of understanding the restaurants identity, though. If it is really to be looked at more as a hangout and bar, then I get why the food's quality and variety is where it is (which is good, just not great). That makes complete sense (hence the 4 stars). We ended up here quite by accident--another local favorite was washing off their patio at 11:45 AM and we wanted to eat outdoors--and what a wonderful accident it turned out to be! I tried the salmon salad, a go-to for me at many Iowa City places. This was the best ever by miles! Fresh, succulent salmon--a large portion--beautifully grilled with ribbons of carrots, edamame, sections of mandarin oranges, a zesty ginger dressing, gorgeous leafy greens, and crispy won ton strips. It was HUGE, something you don't take for granted these days. There was plenty left over for another whole meal. My friend had a reasonably-priced combo of yummy tomato soup, a sophisticated "adult" grilled cheese, and a pretty house salad. Like the salmon, we were hooked! I've returned at least once a week since that first fortuitous visit and have never been disappointed. Took a tremendous crowd here for a birthday brunch and another on Father's Day. Where can you please folks from age three to seventy and everyone in between? TIN ROOST, that's where! The younger ones lapped up fluffy pancakes, bacon, with spicy chicken and waffles, while the rest of us found so many pleasing choices it was difficult to decide. Brioche French toast, a Southern-style platter of light-as-a-feather biscuits and sausage gravy, fresh fruit (the GOOD kind, not a bunch of green melon), huevos rancheros, and a chicken tortilla salad left us happy, full, and smiling like a bunch of proverbial clams! That chicken tortilla salad is heaven on a plate, btw! Lots of complex flavors vie for your attention. Nicely charred white chicken, crisp greens and grape tomatoes coated lightly in a wowza-hot dressing, fresh sweet corn, black beans, shredded jack cheese, avocado, and WHAT magic did they perform on that lightly-browned tortilla shell? Usually, you leave the shell on the plate and just eat the salad, but you won't with this one! Sprinkle on some salt and you'll be tempted to munch it like a plate of crisps! The wait staff, whether old hands or, in one delightful case, a young lady on her very first day, has been universally cheerful, helpful, and competent. As many times as I have visited over the past months, NOTHING has been missing, added, or mistakenly served to anyone in my party. Where can you find THAT kind of service these days? Smiles are the norm. Orders are placed to the kitchen directly from the table with hand-held devices, and that's the way you pay, too. Fewer chances for error. The outdoor patio is nothing short of a masterpiece; tables overlook a winding waterway, a picturesque bridge lined with blooming flower boxes, an enormous sunken fire pit surrounded by benches, all decorated with striking ceramic planters (some shaped like fish with flowers bursting from their mouths!). There is shade aplenty, thanks to generous roof awnings and enormously wide umbrellas. I love seeing folks lingering over Sunday coffees or cocktails, the occasional well-behaved canine companion at their feet. We hosted our son and daughter-in-law's rehearsal dinner at Tin Roost (60 people) June 14, and it was absolute perfection! The entire team went above and beyond to make sure every guest had everything they needed and still made the night special for the Bride and Groom. Food was delicious, room presentation (they lit 180 tapers for us and turned the air down to account for the extra heat!!!), table settings, food and bar service, was just amazing! It was descent, just not great. What I did like about the restaurant is the amount of space it has and that their menu was on the more ample side for options (that usually makes me happy). However, when that happens there's also a larger chance of ordering something that might be just mediocre, while other, better tasting items may be available. I would give it a zero if I could. I ordered a tenderloin online and was a minute early. I called and said I had an online order and was told she'd bring it right out. Another phone call and ten minutes later, I went in and asked if it was ready. The waitress was sitting talking and responded, "Oh, I forgot." I took the tenderloin home and it was limp, not at all crispy like a tenderloin should be! (Especially when they advertise that it was voted the best tenderloin in Johnson County. Must have been a long time ago. The pickles were unedible, mushy, and sickly looking. The bread was saturated. I also ordered a mac salad. When I put it on my plate, mayo ran out of the cup. It, too, was awful. I wish I had checked it before I left because I would have given it back! What's the service fee for? There was no service and an expensive tenderloin ended up dogfood.
