What do you do on your first day in Seattle?! Grab some coffee at Mislead & Co! My friend and I were a bit confused when our trusted Google Map navigator told us that we've arrived. Ummm.... We see the sign for Milstead & Co. but we don't see the actual building but lo and behold after walking a few feet we found the door, lol. I must say, having the lack of a big store front sign gave this place it's mysterious vibe. Once you're inside though, it's pretty spacious - it gave me a hip vibe with it's simple furniture and decoration. A lot of people seem to come here to get a lot of studying and/or work done since most of the tables were taken by people being on their laptops. Being first timers, the cashier/barista recommended their Mocha Latte which I ended up getting while my friend got their Cappuccino. They have plenty of selections too - cold brews, teas, pastries, etc. Baristas chit-chatted with us a little bit and they're so friendly! They also ended up recommending us a few spots to go to if we're looking for more places to go to for our trip. We both loved our Mocha Latte and Cappuccino so we have no complaints! One of my top cafes in Seattle! I love how the windows allow in so much light! There are outlets in multiple spots and different kinds of seatings to choose from. They also have outdoor chairs if you want some sunlight :) I am lactose intolerant so I love how they serve vegan pastries! This coffee shop is kind of hard to find; it's sleek exterior and lack of a big store front gives off a mysterious vibe. The inside is very simple, the hip furniture and decor made the place very suitable for studying/ getting some work done (what a lot of the customers were doing). I originally came here to grab coffee beans for my friends from back home in San Francisco. They were super fond of this place so I decided that I had to order something. I chose the cold brew iced coffee and my friend chose a green tea (they can ice any of their teas upon request). I was so amazed by my selection.. literally the best cup of iced coffee I've ever had in my life (no sugar/ creamer needed). It wasn't too acidic or too bitter. Perfection in a cup! My friend's tea was super watered down. It probably would've tasted better hot.. The customer service was wonderful! The baristas were very attentive and offered us many suggestions. It's been rumored that Milstead & Co is or was considered the "snobbiest coffee shop in the country". Let me be forthright when I say this - I encountered not a hint of pretentiousness or ill-mannered temperament towards me during my entire visit. In fact, I was welcomed with a very friendly demeanor from all the staff, and especially the guy ringing us up at the counter. If that label still exists out there, I would say it is not credible. First impression made sure of that. Anyway, this shop is one of the finer and more better known in Seattle. Articles and baristas suggest it for a reason, so make your way on up to Fremont for some great tasting coffee. Most tourists will likely want to see the Fremont Troll, coincidentally that sculpture is just walking distance from this shop. Why skip the stop? You might as well kill two birds with one stone. Now I've already indicated that they serve great coffee here. That's in large part due to the fact that they are multi-roaster carrier. For being a small shop that is a very respectable way to go. They aren't just offering any ol' coffee either, in their repertoire you'll find Kona, Heart, Stumptown, Ruby, maybe one or two reputable others. The tea selection is also excellent. With the fine products they carry comes great knowledge and craft, because what's fine coffee without that? Its just good. They know their stuff and they've got the skills to pour a drink beautifully. They made my mocha just how I like it, that's because they took the liberty of asking how I wanted my drink; sweet or bitter. I opted for the bitter, making for a mocha that came though with some dark and rich chocolaty flavor. I highly suggest a visit to anyone looking for a great coffee experience. The shop isn't much to look at, but it has an old charm to it. I don't recall the last time I handed a place a 5-star rating but their variety of coffee makes me want to absolve my worries and then deliriously touch myself. Yeah, that's about as good as it gets, baby. Milstead, since my discovery of them three years ago, has often come up in mind when I think of my top five places to have a great cup of coffee in Seattle. I always get talkative, touchy and feely, and overall vulnerable. That's the side effect of a fucking good coffee. One and One: 4.5/5 In case you're wondering what kind of espresso beverage "One and One" is, essentially this is split shot of spro, served in two demitasse cups: Single espresso and Single Macchiato water backed. Corey's spro was delicious and well balanced. A fine job slinging for my One and One. The single macchiato had nice body and natural sweetness. I couldn't really ask for more! I've had so many mediocre espressos in Seattle that finding a shop like Milstead & Co. renews my hopes that amazing coffee and spro can actually be found here in the land known as "The Coffee Capital of the World." I found this place on some website. I was pretty excited to check it out. I ordered a regular latte and an almond croissant. The almond croissant was the smallest one I have ever seen. It was also the driest almond croissant I have ever had. I was not a fan. The latte on the other hand was pretty good. They used Wrecking Ball - Pillow Talk for the espresso and it was fantastic. Milstead and Co. is a class act, all the way. Its everything you could ask for in a coffee house. Sincere, friendly staff who know their beans, light, airy space with cathedral-like ceilings, industrial urbane decor, great customers sitting holding start-up meetings and using this as a secondary Google office space, and heavenly lattes. The kind of lattes that make you roll your eyes in gratitude. What's not to like? I understand this place is all about the next frontier of coffee, but in my old-school book of expresso standards, they are fantastic. They make my favorite soy latte taste one better. Somewhat akin to a floaty expresso cloud with caffeine. It's good. Parking is tricky here: the only negative as far as I'm concerned. Anyway, I might circle the block a few times to get one of their lattes. The thing that gets me is the "sans attitude" genuine friendliness that you'll find at Milstead. Maybe I had unwittingly gotten to used to thinking that ordering expresso requires I thicken my skin at the subset of sometimes morose expresso artisans in an inexplicably annoyed mood. It never fails, I have to nervously crack a joke or make friendly small talk with the occasional unhappy barista camper from time to time as we both "live through" the exacting process of expresso making. I have to own up to taking a fair amount of attitude abuse in exchange for a good latte. Here, there's none of that. Absolutely none. Its an uber-friendly, easy going, vibe that is completely refreshing in a coffee house. They genuinely love their coffee and their customers. (My only gripe: no decaf expresso. At all. Best cup of coffee I've had in Seattle. (Although Empire Espresso is a close second.) The secret is that they use an aero-press, which is kind of like a French press with a filter. I also tried the cappuccino, which was only ok. Kind of strange that it wasn't better? Maybe our barista was having an off day. On a Sunday afternoon, Milstead was packed to the brim with Seattlites working on their Macs. Seriously, if you have a PC, probably don't come here. A lot of yelpers commented that this is one of the best places to get coffee in Seattle. I would have to agree. The smells that come out of this place are just incredible. They have a ton of local coffee bags for sale in the shop and there are tons of seating options. I went with an almond milk cappuccino- the largest size. It was absolutely delicious. The smoothest espresso I've had in a long time. The cappuccino was super frothy, which isn't always the case when you order a drink with almond milk. Customer service was also great here. These guys aren't roasting their own beans but to their credit they were sourcing from some quality Roasters. The Shot they pulled for my Cap was from Intellegentsia beans which they said is what they usually carry. I'm a huge fan of Intellegentsia so they get major props for that. I have heard good things here and there about Milstead and finally checked it out with a friend visiting from out of town. Location is semi-temporary while they fix their actual location essentially next door. The space is wide open and industrial, with high ceilings and ample standing room. The thing that stuck out to me most was personality. Not often do you find employees that seem to enjoy what they do. Work satisfaction also positively affects customers! We had a pastry (it was unremarkable), a cappuccino, and a cold brew. Pricing was average or maybe even on the pricey side. The cappuccino had me a little disappointed - with milk steamed just right, but espresso coming out too astringent and lacking body. This is a super-tippy-hipster place. There is no such thing as a "regular-drip-coffee". It is all air-pressed or espresso. There were 4 choices for air-pressed coffee that day ranging in price of $3.50 - 6.50 per cup! We chose 3 different coffees to do a taste test. Two of the coffees were sour/tart (my son, a barista at another high end coffee shop in Seattle says this is the taste people are going for lately) The other cup was smooth and mellow. The baked goods were decent but not spectacular. So I think what I am saying is that we all have our preferences. I have learned that I don't need a $3.50 cup of coffee to be happy and I chalk it up to a new experience. And here it is. If you want coffee in Seattle you just need to remember one place, and this is that place. I've had a chunk of the menu, from espresso/milk to brewed coffee to just espresso, and every time the drink has been great. This place almost makes me wish I was living in Fremont again, despite the fact that it would double my commute time. Sample size: espresso, macchiato, cortado, aeropress coffee Pros: 1. The espresso is flavorful, consistent, and smooth. Sometimes it's bitter because it's a bean with high acidity and NOT because it's a sour/bad pull. You really get the natural taste of the bean. 2. Coffee is tasty and not burnt. I can actually finish a coffee here instead of pouring it out. 3. Baristas are super friendly! Seriously, they are really chill and always nice. 4. I can't believe I have only discovered Milstead & Co! This place is super cozy, and the coffee is pretty delicious! I'm always on the hunt for new independent coffee shops, so I was so stoked when my best friend (who just moved to Fremont from Cap Hill) introduced me to this place. I would have honestly never found it, as it's tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the main Fremont area by what appears to be an ironworks shop on 34th. I love the atmosphere! Not too big but definitely open and seems to be cool with people planting themselves down to read or surf the net. My only complaint? They are only open until 6 pm, so I often can't make it here in time during the week after my commute home from Everett. But that's okay, it's a weekend treat! Woke up Saturday morning not wanting to get out of bed. Who knew an hour later I'd be writing my first yelp review for a coffee shop. The harvest bread is like all the great parts of fall baked into a moist loaf. The Nutella brioche is DANGEROUSLY amazing (which is why it was half eaten before I had a second to take a picture). Fluffy and dense at the same time. I felt like I melted right back into bed after my first bite. I honestly don't really like coffee but the latte art was too cute not to get and turned out to be quite tasty as well. To me, it felt like this place turned coffee-making into a science, which makes for a unique experience. I like their wide selection of coffee, and the fact that they don't (or at least the barista that served me) act like coffee snobs, but are willing to explain things to help you place an informed-decision order. The atmosphere was also very pleasant, and the outdoor seating gives you a nice option. The main downside for me is the price - it's not cheap. I can definitely appreciate, and would agree with, the fact that it's worth the money you are paying. However, I can't see myself as a regular here, lest my bank account slowly disappears. Rich, creamy, 85% cacao, so not too sweet but sweet enough. I also got the Nutella brioche, which was delicious; it would've been better toasted, but they don't have anything to toast it in. I also expected more Nutella (but that might be the sweet tooth in me talking). The baristas are so genuine and I've had friendly conversations with everyone I've encountered here. A nice place located near the Fremont bridge and the Fremont History House, a small historical site with a sculpture garden and outdoor seating. The inside feels spacious and has long tables, which I found unusual. They were playing some electronic Madeon remixes that day, I believe, which gave the place a more upbeat atmosphere. The staff was really nice. The girl who took my request seemed quite excited to do so. The coffee seems a tad more pricey than average. Tucked away in a corner of a building, it was a little difficult to find. Especially that it's right next to another cafe. But once you find it and open the doors, you get transfixed to another world. The inside was absolutely alluring with grey walls and plants. The coffee shop is very spacious and not too crowded with high ceilings. They specialize in their "Theo Mocha" which is a local organic chocolate brand I believe. I also got their blackberry pistachio croissant which caught my eye. Overall I have this 4/5 because the baristas were super nice!
