I found three academies in the area, and Gilroy Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was the closest one to my hotel. I went on their website, signed the waiver, and that same day Anthony called me to check in. I told him I was in town for two weeks for work, and he said, "Then you can just come train with us for free." That alone really impressed me. He explained how the classes were organized and let me know that Mondays were takedown-only. Since I was mainly looking to roll, he told me that Tuesday through Saturday were roll days. When I arrived, I had a little trouble finding the academy because it's tucked away upstairs inside a building. As soon as I walked in, I was greeted by one of the students, who was extremely friendly. He asked if it was my first time. I told him I had been training for about four months, and he pointed me toward Anthony. I introduced myself to Anthony, and then I started stretching out. The class was exactly what I was looking for. There were a lot of students, the atmosphere was great, and Anthony provided excellent instruction. After class, I told Anthony that I was definitely coming back, but I needed to wash my gi first. He said, "Come here," took me to the back room, asked what size I wore, and when I said A4, he literally handed me a gi and said, "It's yours." I was honestly astonished. I didn't expect that at all. Anthony went above and beyond to make me feel welcome, and that gesture really showed me what kind of person and teacher he is. Anthony is a true blessing, and I'm grateful for the experience. If you're in the Gilroy area and looking for a place to train, I definitely recommend Gilroy Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. 10/10!

We did our research both within and outside the city for jiu jitsu gyms, and decided to become members here since its an affiliated Caio Terra gym, with International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation certified trainers. From the training coaches to the students, everyone fosters a supportive environment during training, regardless of the level or reason you're there, whether fitness or self defense, entry level or advanced belt. Coach Anthony and Kyle are amazing with the children, and all of the coaches are patient during the kids classes, with children of all ages. The kids come here and are able to learn, develop a sense of comradery, gain confidence, and they all have a lot of fun together. The coaches are very knowledgable and experienced, and willing to share their experience with the students. We're very fortunate to have found a home at Gilroy BJJ and look forward to every training!

From day one, the staff made me feel welcome, and the community here is incredibly supportive. Whether you're a beginner or advanced, there's always someone willing to help you improve. When I started, I was diabetic and dependent on both metformin and insulin. Within eight months of consistent training and lifestyle changes through Jiu-Jitsu, I was completely off all medications. That alone speaks volumes about the impact this place has had on my health and well-being. What makes it even better is that this academy is now a part of our whole family's life. My wife trains here, along with our 8-year-old son and 4-year-old daughter. The boost in their confidence, discipline, and personal growth has been incredible to witness. If you're looking for a place to transform your health, build real confidence, and grow as a person--and even as a family--Gracie Barra is it. Highly recommend.

They remember their names, intentionally connect and provide incredible instruction. These guys know their stuff and communicate it into teaching so well. My girls have come so far with BJJ in just a few months and Gracie's is their favorite place to be (we go almost every day!). They learn so much every single class and have gained a ton of confidence and strength in themselves. I have several friends (adults) who attend classes here too and love it. Trying it for myself next week. I cannot recommend this gym and the coaches enough!

Aug 2026 After 2…read moreyears at a different local BJJ studio, we made the decision to move to MHJJ. The decision was bittersweet, but easy for us. As my boys entered middle school, I wanted them to have the confidence to protect themselves and each other. And BIJ levels the playing field. Initially, Professor Andy introduced our family to BJJ. He trained with us, taught my kids life lessons and explained to them the importance of self respect and discipline. When Professor Andy moved to MHJJ, many of the students and parents followed him. BJJ was not only about winning on the mats, to Professor Andy...BJJ was also a way of winning in life. When life gets tough, there's always a way out and you can fight through times even when things seem impossible. With that philosophy, the decision to move to MHJJ with Professor Andy was simple. Did we leave behind friends from the other gym? Yes, but we found a new home here quickly. Facility: In Aug 2026, the school expanded and added an additional 16 sq ft of mat space. So there are two sections now....split between wrestling and BJJ classes or youth/comp kid classes. Mats are clean and plenty of sitting area for parents and spectators. Mats are also cleaned all the time! Bathrooms are super clean and the room is well lit. Front Desk: Julia is the nicest and sweetest person. She's always helpful and cheery. She got us squared away and signed up easily. Her whole family trains here too so it's not just a job for her, but a way of life. Professors: When we arrived, we were introduced to Professors Jaine Fragoso and Joao Nicolite (look them up). Both are multi-winning world champions in gi and no gi competitions . They come from the world renowned Caio Terra and 10th Planet BJJ schools. Here at MHJJ - you get all of their mastery and skill during the lessons. Collectively, they bring a whole new level of BJJ to this school. Not only are they master teachers, they are fun and compassionate with all the students. They take the time to get to know each student and their parents. This connection was something that was missing from our old BJJ school. You'll also meet the other owners, Professor Marcus and Matt. Both are super easy going, chill and making fun of each other....the way any sport, healthy gym and friends should be. Uniforms: There are none. You can wear any brand gi or no gi rashguards here (as long as they are not offensive). Our old BJJ school only allowed their logo...and those were $200/each for a single set of gi. We buy the $50 gis from Elite BJJ Sports and they are competition approved. Saving us a whopping $150 compared to our old school. MHJJ does have a nice custom competition gi, rash guards and apparel for everyday wear. They even support local businesses with home made jams and organic baked goods. Classes: MHJJ offers kids, adult and women's only classes. The classes range from recreational to competition preparation. Similar to other BJJ gyms, private lessons are also available. MHJJ also offers a wrestling program too. In summary, we are very happy here. Everyone is kind, encouraging and makes you feel like family. Whether this is recreational, self defense or competition, MHJJ offers it all. We are so happy we made the switch.

Without being too direct about another competitor, they will see you more as a source of revenue versus building you and/or your kids up. The owners here care and they have their own kids involved in the programs. Go check if the others do, which I'll tell you now they don't. Don't pay for a name. Pay for a team and a place that brings you up. Not a place that gives you little attention unless you're one of the best. Trust me, I've been at that place and MH JJ is another level. If you come in here and see half the kids with Gracie GUI's, it's because they left the toxic coaching and leadership over there.
