People have asked me so many times if I've been to Mimi's. After always declaring my Mimi virginity, said questioners usually declare that I would LOVE it. Well, I've finally visited Mimi's. And I LIKED it. It's around the corner from my work so I may be back in again soon, but my first visit, although absolutely fine, did not blow me away. Mimi's is a cool, quirky cake place, and they also have a decent menu for food. I had a plate of stovies for my lunch, which was very nice. But at over £8 I felt like the price was a bit steep for what is essentially a potato dish. I followed up my lunch with an oreo cookie brownie. I have to say that all the cakes on display did look wonderful, but I might have picked a dud, because the brownie was just okay. It wasn't amazing, sadly. They also don't split bills, so it was a bit of a faff trying to calculate who was paying for what. So all in all, Mimi's is a nice place for a spot of lunch. Its decor is fun and has a cool vintage theme, the food is nice and the cakes are also tasty. But nothing spectacular. I may have to visit again for a second opinion... read more

Sunday morning with a touch of a hangover and friends saying this place is good, so off we go. It over looks the water at Leith and in side is well above your greasy spoon in decor. This is a must! The sweets are so good I eat them. I am not a sweet guy ask anyone. If their not savory I don't want it so this is a big deal. Ver crowded in the weekends and mums and their baby's so be prepared but you can't help that. If your in the area do stop by you won't be upset. Arrived at 4.30pm on Saturday afternoon in anticipation to have a nice fruit scone with some Clotted cream but alas none were available so red velvet cake it was! The cake was really nice although the frosted icing was very sweat! Good job my other half has a sweet tooth! Tea was lovely and the overall ambience in the place was good too. Will be back next time in Edinburgh hopefully to try their scones. read more

What a gorgeous little addition to Leith's Shore! This place is a proper little slice of Manhattan in Edinburgh. More cupcakes than you can shake a stick at along with giant slabs of grown-up cakes too. A rather stupendous chocolate guinness cake was on the menu for my most recent visit. They don't confine their offering to sweet things. They have plenty of coffee choices, a fine selection of herbal teas, cosy hot chocolates or cold and fizzy things. And their savoury pies are a rare treat. Huge wedges of pastry cases packed with wholesome vegetable goodness. A chunk of this plus the side salad and you'll be perfectly set up for the rest of the day. The tea room itself is replete with vintage loveliness. You'll feel a little more civilised just having sat there for half an hour sipping your Earl Grey. I'm delighted to welcome Mimi's to Leith. Long may she bake there. read more

Mimi's Bakehouse - Leith - is a really great place for an High Tea or a massive blue cheese and bacon deep baked pie with butternut squash. The have little cheeky burlesque theme to it but really understated, it is good food and great service. Just what Leith needs! The teas are all organic and they have specials every day! I am going back there for breakfast for sure. You can even buy little souvenirs or presents for people that had to miss out :o) read more

I love cakes and afternoon tea but was disappointed here. I had afternoon tea with my girlfriend and was disappointed with the sandwiches to start , they were nothing special and the few pieces of lettuce scattered on top did not appeal to me. The cakes were okay . My major gripe was that the floor was very dirty , it had food scattered everywhere , this may sound over the top but it can be off putting. The staff were friendly but I think it is unprofessional for them to eat food behind the counter plus eating as they are serving customers . I think it will be busy here and I'm sure they will do well , I hope they resolve these problems. read more

Even with food poisoning I came to MImi's! My friend was in town from London and staying with me in Leith. I mentioned to her about going to Mimi's for breakfast. I was so excited as I had not been yet. An unfortunate case of food poisoning the night before put our trip to Mimi's in jeopardy (well, actually mine, she said she would go without me). Sunday morning, I wake up still feeling queasy but I could not say no. We walked over 1 hour earlier than our reservation because we were hungry. Luckily they were not that busy. The place looks very girly and cute, I loved it! haha! I joked to my friend that we should have worn big hats and elbow length gloves. The first thing I noticed is that the service is MUCH better than any of the places I've eaten at in Edinburgh during my 1 month stay. I know service at restaurants in America can be overwhelming but it's service, they're working for tips. You want another drink? They ask you. Anything else? They come by frequently. The bill? You don't have to wait ages. Mimi's had that level of service that I'm used to and were so friendly. My friend had the granola which looked VERY good. I wanted a huge breakfast but didn't want to gamble so I ordered a scone with cream and jam. It was excellent. So soft and warm. The waitress was also nice enough to bring me dry toast as I had mentioned to her I was feeling a little on the yuck side. I leave back to NYC Friday but I think I will make Mimi's my goodbye breakfast now that I'm feeling better. Oh, and the cakes look amazing. My boyfriend and I went here for Sunday morning breakfast three weeks ago. I decided that I would have a scone in order to leave room for a cheeky cupcake. My scone was served with butter and jam and it was very tasty. My special Valentine's cupcake was divine! The staff were all friendly and the decor was very cute. The one thing I will fault is that we were waiting quite a while to receive our drinks. I read about rave reviews about Mimi's and decided to make it a point to visit it when I visited Edinburgh. The cafe was cosy and nicely decorated. As I did not fancy a large breakfast, I had the scones with butter and homemade jam. The scone arrived piping hot and it was absolutely mouth watering. Ate it with both the butter and the homemade jam and it was worth the long walk all the way from Edinburgh. I read the reviews to this place and was quite keen to go. Great atmosphere, friendly staff and food was really good. I had their tomato basil soup, salad, and ham sandwich and is good. Their cakes ate just to die for! Everything tasted fresh and homemade. My mother had a carrot cake cupcake and I had the chocolate Carmel shortbread bar. Def worth it! read more

I did not care for their desserts or especially their scones. I prefer both to be a little more subtle. The scones were like thick doughy American biscuits. (biscuits, not cookies) To be fair, later I saw scones looked similar in other shop displays so maybe that's just how they make them in Scotland. read more

A very chic little coffee shop and cake house by the Shore. Turning up for a quick bite with my mother-in-law on a bank holiday, all the tables were reserved by 1145 - however, the staff pulled out the stops and gave us a spot for coffee and cake for 45 minutes. It's a great sign when staff are willing to go that extra mile to squeeze you in, and it meant I got to have the most delicious rice krispie cake I've ever had. If there's a few of you, it's definitely worth reserving a table. read more

Several rave reviews from friends and colleagues meant a trip to Leith and Mimi's Bakehouse was going to be on the cards at some point. Bit the bullet this weekend and off we went. First impressions were fairly positive. Big smiles from staff and a smart interior with the first thing you see being the mirrored cake display as you come in. Stunning array of baked delights but we'd come for breakfast so grabbed a seat in the window and pondered the choice. If there's ever French toast/bacon/maple syrup combos available i'm going to be heading in that menu direction so after about 2 seconds browsing opted for Mimi's take on this brunch staple. Think this was a pretty good choice. Thick fluffy toast with quality bacon and maple syrup that seemed to ooze from the crusts. Brilliant stuff. Only 2 downsides I could pick up on. I like my bacon cremated, or at least a couple of shades darker than you'd normally expect. Asked the server if I could have it really well done (smoking) but when it arrived it looked like it had had standard grill time. I wonder if there's a risk threshold that places just won't exceed? Maybe I should take in a picture of a bit of really crispy bacon and say "don't stop till you go this far". Second point was the room temperature was a bit on the fresh side. Not a problem for me, but my breakfast partner needs to be incubated at a steady 24 degree C. All in a great place for a brunch treat, going to be heading back soon for something a bit more calorifically deviant! read more

What a wonderful place for a beautiful tea in Scotland. We had lunch there with sandwiches, Salted Caramel Banana french toast, and salads. The food is awesome and the atmosphere is lovely. Add an Americana coffee and a Pear Cider . . . a must for every visit to Scotland. read more

i've been desperate to try this place for ages and finally made the plans with a friend to go here for lunch today. i'd had a quick browse of the menu online and was particulary excited by their scrumptious breakfast options, but hadn't looked at the times that breakfast was served at the weekends. so when i arrived just before 1pm and sat at the table waiting for my friend, i realised that the breakfast ended in 5 minutes and i may have no option but to get lunch food. however, their lunch menu is lovely and there are loads of delicious looking choices. they also had a very tasty sounding pasta special that i was slightly tempted by, but given my hungover state what i really craved was a plate of eggs and toast. when my friend arrived i asked the very nice waitress if i could still get breakfast even though it was 1pm and she just smiled and said of course. so scrambled eggs, toast, and smoked salmon it was! my friend ordered the famous french toast which looked absolutely amazing when it was brought to the table. i must go back to try this soon! my eggs were nice and creamy and cooked perfectly (not dry at all) the smoked salmon was that lovely smokey flavour that is a little bit salty and goes so well with eggs, and my toast was from a fresh multi grain bread just a lightly toasted golden brown which is my prefered toastiness level. the star of my visit though was the raspberry brownie that i got to take away. first off this brownie was like a brownie on steriods, a huge decadent slice that was twice as thick as a normal brownie. when i got home i placed the brownie on a plate and put it in the microwave for a few seconds to get that just out of the oven warmth. i took the brownie back to my room, sat down and took my first forkful then i literally shoved the whole thing in my face in two seconds. it was so delicious i don't even have the adjectives to describe it. it was perfectly moist and chocolate with a little tang from the raspberries that were mixed in. as i look at my empty plate now i only wish i'd bought two (or three or all that were on display!!!) so i could relive that intensenly delectable and chocolately dessert heaven experience again. already trying to decide when i can make my next visit!!!!! read more

Now this is a serious cake place. They have a huge selection of cakes and their lemon drizzle cake (one of my all time favourites) is lovely and moist. Apparently the creme egg brownies are fabulous (that's if you like creme egg, which I don't). To go with your cake, apart from a selection of tea and coffees, they have a lovely selection of soft drinks, including some raspberry lemonade, which tastes divine! However, I'd recommend to stay away from the pink lemonade (not the same thing), which tastes awfully chemical. You can also get wine and their afternoon tea looks fab if you're up for a more 'lushy' afternoon. The downside of the place if that it is huge and can get very noisy, particularly at weekends. The waitresses were also very busy and it was difficult to catch their eyes. If you decide to go at the weekend, do book a table in advance to avoid disappointment. I would certainly go back, but will avoid weekends if I can. When it comes to tea rooms and cake places, my personal preference goes to smaller places. Wow, it feels funny clicking 3* for this now well established Edinburgh institution. I might be tempted to 4* - for the cakes and service - but I don't much like the atmosphere, the physical space and perhaps above all the coffee is meh. It's lovely that Edinburgh can now set the bar so high that somewhere like Mimi's doesn't come in my top 20. I would accept completely that many people would disagree and see this is a cake Mecca. American in Edinburgh...and Leith. I wasn't feeling too well the day we went to Mimi's -- I'd eaten some bad cheese the night before. But the coconut-lime cake made me feel sooo much better! And the tea (I am actually a coffee drinker normally), was wonderful. I LOVED the big clumps of sugar in the sugar bowl (even though I didn't have any). Ah.. Mimi's bakehouse. It's a good place for lunch. However, an even better place for cakes! If you haven't tried Mimi's cakes you're missing out my friends. The only problem I have whenever I go there is choosing. There is so much choice and everything tastes good! I thought Loopy Lorna's had nailed vintage tea-room but I have to say that Mimi's is my new favourite place to drink tea! The decor is INCREDIBLE with pin-up wallpaper and vintage style furniture. The cake selection is so good you could spend hours choosing a cake. The breakfasts are also incredible with cream in your scrambled eggs!! Really child friendly and in a gorgeous location. Just a shame it's in Leith and not more central! Mimi's brings out the all-vintage lover in me and could definelty do more with the vintage theme with the music and uniforms but maybe that's just me! read more

From the moment i walked in the front i could tell i was gonna have a good break fast. There was lovely soft jazz / 60 music very soothing. Then you notice there cakes!! Came here for brunch with a few people, and although it was quite busy we got a nice table near the windows! The tea was great, the scones were amazing and offered in several different flavors (clotted cream especially delicious), the entrees were good (I had mac and cheese and others had chicken bap and fish cakes--all quite good!). They have a huge selection of sweets everyday, such as red velvet brownies, oreo cupcakes, chocolate peanut butter cheesecake, and plenty more. Definitely a fun and special place to visit! read more

This was my first trip to Mimi's and my friends have raved about it. As I rocked up there was already a queue forming but thankfully my friends were already in there. I liked the decor of the place and the afternoon tea was great. A nice treat to have and I did go for the champagne version which is a bit pricey but payday had just happened so I felt obliged to splurge a bit! The downside was that my friend had booked this table for 9 people and yet they put us on a small table and we ended up having to put stuff on our laps and on the ground to make room for everything. They even put extra small tables around us to help with all the food and tea. It all felt a bit squashed and uncomfortable. This was a shame but I still had a good time and enjoyed the afternoon tea experience. The whole time we were at Mimi's there was a massive queue out the door, mostly women! We found Mimi's Bakehouse some time ago on the internet but only recently visited as we are fairly local and my pregnant wife had a sudden craving for French toast. We visited around 11am on a Sunday and it was really busy which seemed promising. Our drinks (hot chocolates) were really good but it's exceptionally expensive there. I liked my Full Scottish Breakfast but my partner didn't like her French toast. The cakes look delicious at Mimi's Bakehouse but sadly we won't be going back due to the overpricing. There are other restaurants/cafes in Edinburgh that do at least equal quality food but for less money. read more
