Allison is a creative genius! I had an "idea" of what I wanted and she made it come to life. My son is going to be 1 in a few weeks and I told her I wanted a square plate with his footprint and it had to say "love." She immediately made it happen. I forgot to bring a sample of what I saw so she took the time to look through their site to find what I was looking for. We couldn't find it so she told me I could email a picture and she'd finish it up for me if I wanted. We emailed back and forth a little bit and I got a picture of the almost finished product. She is amazing! My son, who is VERY clingy to only my husband and me went to her right away. She's amazingly patient, I can't wait to see the completely finished product on Saturday. read more

Mimosa helped me turn a very unhappy bathroom remodel into something I could feel good about! An unexpected leak in the basement ceiling led to having to pull out our tub tile and the need to find something FAST. I remembered there was "paint your own ceramics" places I'd seen around town and called Mimosa. Everyone I delt with there was friendly and helpful. I was lucky that is was a slow time when I started, but the place filled up quickly...no problem...the vibe stayed calm and there were plenty of supplies to go around. My daughter has a pension for painting pottery. Having lived in 4 states over the past 3 years, we have visited more than our fair share of studios. Since moving to Portland (the greatest city in the world, by the way) 6 weeks ago, my 3 children and I have painted pottery 3 times at Mimosa. We absolutely love it!!! The atmosphere is so warm and inviting, Jason is wonderful to work with and the experience can not be topped. The kids are free to roam and explore, eat, help with chores around the studio, see the kilnl; it is as close to having your own home studio is you might possibly get. My boyfriend and I went in for the first time for their Margarita Night and had a great time. The staff was down to earth and friendly and not skimpy on the drinks. The prices for the pottery are fair and they give you plenty of paint options for your creation. If you don't finish in time you can come back later and finish at no extra charge. I have enjoyed taking my 4 year old here for the last couple of years. They have affordable options starting at $5 and it's a nice way to kill an hour or two and have some creative time. I have lots of cute keepsakes that my daughter has painted for me (coffee mug, figurine, Christmas ornaments, etc.) The only downside is I wish that the location wasn't so tiny as I have felt cramped when it is busy. Overall I have had many good experiences here and will continue to be a repeat customer. read more

I've had very positive experiences frequenting this studio. The staff is warm and friendly, even when I came to pick up my piece at closing time (my bad on that one). I really enjoy the family friendly atmosphere and it's great that they host all sorts of events and birthday parties. I'm hoping to check out their "last Friday of the month Margarita event" or something to the tune of that. Their selection of glazes is pretty decent but you may be asked to pay an additional $2 for using more than a small amount of speciality glazes. They fire pottery twice a week so there is usually not much wait for the finished product. My only reasons for not giving five stars are that it's a bit cramped for seating, parking is difficult (but usually is on Alberta), and that the prices could be a little lower. Even with these perceived downsides of Mimosa studies, I will still be returning for future projects since the pros vastly outweigh the cons. Definitely a place worth checking out, and a superb idea for a hand made gift. read more

My oldest child had her birthday here in August. It was very easy to schedule the party, and while a small deposit was required at the time of scheduling, it could be done over the phone with an e-receipt provided to the customer. Four days before the party, I called the studio to confirm that we were still on the schedule for the correct date and time. The same employee who scheduled the party for me informed me that we were all set and ready to go. Three days before the party, I received a voicemail stating that I hadn't paid the deposit(I had), and that if I didn't pay it they were going to give my party slot away. You would think the employee would have mentioned that when I called the day prior. I called back and confirmed that I had already paid the deposit and had the e-receipt to prove it. They were nice about it and stated that it was an error on their part. I made the mistake of booking the party without actually going to the studio to check it out. I assumed they would have a party room, which they do not. It is a small studio that holds maybe 25 people at max capacity. Its artsy and cute and the kids loved it. For $14/kid you get a 3 inch tall figurine and 90 mins of studio time. The 90 minutes is great, as it gets super hot in there, so you will be more than ready to leave after 90 minutes. It also forces kids to finish up their pieces so that we can move on to cake and presents. I recommend that no more than 2 adults stay with a party of 8 kids. Its just too crowded and there really isn't anywhere to sit. I communicated to parents that I would either drive their kid to and from, or that they are welcome to drop their kid off and pick them up at the end of the party. Most parents were thrilled to get 90 minutes of adult time while their kids hung out with us. Negatives during the party were lack of seating, studio extremely hot (recommend going in winter maybe), having the employees ask if they can have some of our cake, and also having the employees ask me to pay for the party during the party. I think that should be done before or after the party, as I feel its rude to pull the hostess from the party to pay. Again, the kids just loved it. It was a calm, fun activity that provided them each with a unique figurine that they made themselves. It only took 1 week for the pieces to be finished, and it was easy to pick them up. They also include a good sized plate for the birthday child that is really cute! So while there were things I didn't love about this place, it was a hit with the kiddos for sure. I called today to book my other childs party. The same employee who I have dealt with before answered the phone and he told me he cant book birthday parties anymore. He told me that he has to take my information and give it to some party coordinator who would call me in 2 days. Well, Im a type A personality so when I decide I want to book the party, I want to book the party. Because he said he couldn't do it, I told him I was no longer interested and we hung up. I couldn't get over how much money they were losing by doing this. I began googling other venues, when I saw their number come up on my caller ID. A manger was calling to inform me that she could book the party and that they employee was new and didn't understand. WE booked the party, all is well now, but that employee needs to be wrangled. Hes a wild card and could potentially lose clients for this business. read more

Mimosa Studios was one of the first places I went to for a 'crafternoon' in Portland, and now that I've been living here for three years it's one of my GO TO places when I'm feeling artsy/crafty. I love that they have Margarita's nights, and change the ceramic options to keep with the seasons and holidays to keep things fresh! And the pieces are fired in a timely manner. This is the only pottery painting studio I will go to! I love the creative stuff on display around the shop, which is for sale, and gives me more inspiration than I have time for. There are tons of different items to choose from like plates, cups, mugs, bowls, platters, figurines, tiles, magnets, spoon rests, frames, vases, etc. in a variety of shapes, sizes, and price ranges...This last trip I even noticed an adorable honey pot shaped like a beehive. Totally my next project! But the best part is the staff. Allison in particular is so helpful. She really knows what she's doing, and she is always right there when I have a question, need another set of eyes to decide on a color, pattern, etc, or ask for help with a technique. The atmosphere of Mimosa is really chill and calm. I was able to take my three week old son there to do a project I saw on pinterest with his footprints without him getting overwhelmed...and I have to say, I think mine turned out better. No pinterest fails at this studio! read more
