Duluth Antique Marketplace just opened...all of the local antique stores said we should check them out and see what they're all about. No one we talked to had actually been there yet. I'd say that only one in 20 items in this store is actually an antique or something vintage. (But there seems to be more antiques in the basement.) DAM seems to mostly be a store with "up-cycled" merchandise, home-made crafts, reproduction antiques, and a few vintage items. I didn't see any hardcore high-end antiques. I saw a lot of things made out of painted wood, corrugated tin, pottery, and galvanized metal...you get the picture. Despite not really being a traditional antique store, I like what they're trying to do here. The store is large, bright, and everything is displayed nicely. There are a lot of bright, modern looking grays and whites. Everything still smells like new paint. There were two women scrambling around (The owners? Managers?) that we talked to quite a bit. Antiques on Belknap is by far the best antique store in the Duluth, MN and the Superior, WI area!…read more My wife and I scheduled 2 days to visit EVERY antique store in Duluth and in Superior. We were able to visit all of them except for two, which closed early...because of cold weather...or whatever. When we finally got to Belknap I was amazed at the huge quantity of high quality items crammed into one small building! You have to look close, every square inch is packed with stuff. And don't forget to look up. There are some awesome larger items hanging from the rafters in the ceiling. The whole place is owned by a very nice woman named Janet. All of the merchandise is hers...no "antique mall" with hundreds of small vendors and their stupid little nick-nacks. It's all 100% Janet. This explains the quality. And it explains her willingness to carry a few larger items that you'd never see at a mall. My wife and I like big items. We bought a 1951 movie poster that's 7 feet wide and 2 feet tall with striking images and the original billboard scalloped frame. We also bought a 1930s flour advertising poster that's 4 feet wide and 1 foot tall with really cool graphics and shrink wrapped safely on a cardboard backing. For a small additional fee, yes, your furry friends can attend. Reservations and basic communication are simple and there is no front desk staff like a traditional hotel aiding to the uniqueness of this spot. There is a digital lockbox where your welcome email will include instructions for obtaining your key fob. A designated parking lot across the street allows for easy accessibility in and out and every single store below the lofts (including the coffee shop) is dog friendly which is a major score! The entire building is ADA accessible from the walk up ramp to elevators (which was lovely bc my dog is a tripod and cannot accommodate stairs). To my surprise, a loft on the 3rd floor had 2 bedrooms which allowed each of us to have private areas with our dogs along with the common spaces to share the living room, kitchen and bathroom. The vaulted ceilings allowed for natural light to enter and the entire building recently had a makeover making our stay a complete success. Some tips and fun facts we discovered were hidden dog bowls under the sink including neutral disinfectant for accidents/ basic cleaning along with paper towels, sound machines for white noises located in the closets along with extra blankets, record player on-site with varying record options, and full kitchen with a stove. All amenities include but not limited towards: bar cart with bottle opener, shaker, etc., coffee cups, wine cups, bowls, silverware and cookware. The basement level has a really cool dog wash station which can also be used for bicycles, a smaller gym, a few restrooms and a conference room. Enger lofts is the perfect get-away and is a spot one can enjoy without driving around town as everything is within walking distance. Bonus: Bent Paddle Brewery is directly across the street in walking distance and is dog friendly on the heated patio as well as an on-site food truck. Enjoy!

That's…read moreonly where you need to go to pay for a ticket to enter Tom's Logging Camp, the 4-star attraction here. Tom's Logging Camp ($5 per person) is a self guided walk on a trail behind the souvenir shop. It's a peek into what an actual logging camp was like, something I assure you I'd never once in my life thought of before visiting here. It's kind of a fun little stroll. You peer into or walk through cabins that have handwritten explanations of what you're seeing. The signs explain everything from the equipment the loggers used to the food they ate, to the jobs of the cooks and the blacksmiths. It was here that I learned that the Finnish workers, when they arrived on Duluth's North Shore, were the hardest workers but they'd work only in camps with saunas. Tom's Logging Camp erected a sauna, naturally, because Tom wanted Finnish workers. I also learned that loggers were filthy and drank heavily: * In the bunkhouse, a top bunk was in demand as the bugs crawling on you would fall downward, preying instead on the inhabitant of the lower bunk; and * A special cabin has been erected here to let visitors emulate the experience of being a drunk logger. Everything leading to and inside that cabin is askew and somehow, it had me chuckling exactly as I'd imagine a drunk logger might. Boy, did I learn a lot of useless interesting stuff here! As you walk the trail you can purchase food to feed trout then goats and finally, llamas. So come to Tom's Logging Camp to have the fun experience of a llama eating out of your hand, being a faux-drunk, and learning a bit about life in a Minnesota logging camp.
