    Flies in the meat

The customer service isn't that great neither is the cleanliness of the store I've been coming her for at least 11 years but today was my last time coming not only does the meat not look fresh the store has a smell but that's not the worst part as I'm waiting for my lunchmeat I see a roach crawling on the meat counter I told the butcher he killed it but there was also several flies in the meat case one was just sitting unbothered on a container that had links it it that was only partially covered that is just disgusting

Idk what in this photo but it STINKS!

Ok so all the review about the stench customer service and flies are all true. I was here for some meats against my will but anyway I smelled this place through the mask before I even hit the door. Customer service sucks the black guy with the gold teeth (yea he had no mask on) was rude. And calling women mama won't smooth things over I'm not your mom! I was told it would take 10 minutes to thaw the meat I ended up being here for an hour until he just gave me a box of what I wanted which was $80. No apologies for the long wait or skipping over numbers just trash. Parking lot sucks too.

Deli meats and more pre- cut and sliced to order.

Back in the day when I was young. Remember the days when your parents took you shopping at a Market away from where you lived this is a memory I cherish listen up I'm going to take you way back.. This Market is in the heart of the hood and I don't care this is where I choose to shop. This market is the last of the mom and pops that dominated in the 70's. Get over here and check them out if you too are hankering for a bit of the way things used to be. Take a number and step aside. I appreciate specialty cuts of meat because of my Mother she's from Arkansas and country to the bone as a child her dinner lived in a pen or ran around the yard they ate everything from the roota to the toota. She had her family overnight her squirrel and possum after she came to California. I came one day from school and saw a squirrel cooking and I just about lost my mind. I don't want to meet my meat. I don't apologize for appreciating such things as fresh cut to order deli meats a block of bologney and pickle loaf with white bread and the chittlins and neck bones my mother prepared with love the oxtails she had cut to order the hot links and ribs we barbecued in the back yard. They would jam to that music and we would crack up listening to Bobby Blue Bland sing " if you're going to walk on my love please take off your shoes" zzz hill and Johnny Taylor blaring late into night while they played bid whist. Those days are long gone but I remember the love and fun we had cooking and eating together. On this day my sister and I went shopping she had to get a few bags of chittlins for Christmas and although I don't eat them she loves them. They have retro candy too I love those now laters and zag nut bars. Oh and a bottle of Boones farm pink lemonade or strawberry hill remember that or pink champale. I had bacon cut from a slab with the rind on and a fat sour pickle as a kid we stuck a peppermint stick inside of it. I glance at the pig feet passing it right on by ordering up some hog head cheese a thick piece of spicy and a thick piece of regular with a box of saltine crackers omg that's good eating. Before you say yuck picture being poor and having to make do with the lesser cuts of meat my Mother took those parts and made something yucky taste delicious and I'm proud of her. What was odd was we could afford to eat anything we wanted my family was middle class however my Father hated almost every thing roota or toota especial chittlins and anything pig I guess you could say he brought home the bacon and my mother cooked it. We can't eat those things much now for obvious reasons. My daughter would never eat things like pickle loaf, potted meat, neck bones or liver she even hates mayonnaise she would starve first. She grew up in a condo and never ran to an ice cream truck at home I remember our truck grandpa goodie was his name his music theme was Tyrone Davis "turning point" when we heard that song we took off running yelling ice cream truck. He had the best chili fries and chili fritos he was a trip years later I heard he sold funny cigarettes too. That's why the big kids loved him lol. My food choices are better but once a year or so I need some old school food from my past. Pickled pig feet anyone. Lol

Had to stock up on my favorite Louisiana sausage since I'm down this way - Boudin

In our pursuit of great…read moresandos, we've tried Katz Deli in NYC, Brent's in Northridge and even the sorely missed but never forgotten Miller's East Coast Deli in San Francisco. So when, tasked with finding a suitable place for our quarterly lunch meeting, I entered "Jewish deli" and "Downey" into Yelp, half expecting to find the lackluster lineup of national chains that PURPORT to make good sandwiches- Subway, Joysie Mike's, Jimmy John's and the usual suspects of sandwich sorriness! Imagine then, fellow Yelpers, when Uncle Henry's Deli appeared...as welcome a sight as my gorgeous bikini-clad wifey. Both Mick and I, who first bonded over our shared love of the national pastime, immediately likened Henry's with the MLB legend who shares my birthday- Henry Louis Aaron, aka Hamnerin' Hank and the REAL all-time home run leader, Barry Bonds and his oversized gourd, er, head be damned. In his 22yr career, Aaron belied his average size (5ft 11 tall, 185 lbs) and deployed his missile-fast wrists to smack 755 homers. All while playing in Jim Crow era Atlanta. Uncle Henry's Deli, similarly, defies expectations. Who would think of putting a Jewish-style delicatessen in Downey, famous for birthing the honey-voiced Carpenters and the self-styled "Mexican Beverly Hills?!" Mick ordered a super sized Original, which is turkey, roast beef + ham plus cheddar on white. He went with potato wedges which are sizable. Me? I chose one hot, one cold. A super sized Big B (Pastrami, Bacon + Swiss on toasted sourdough, hold the pickles) and an Egg Salad on enviably well made squaw bread, hold the tomatoes. Pro Tip- From a lifetime of ordering well made sandos in every major city in America, never put tomatoes on a cold sandwich unless you want the notoriously water-dense fruit to dampen your sandwich! The only mild drawback of my food order was the side of potato salad, which in my opinion would benefit from some black pepper and minced celery. The service at Henry's is expedient- You've barely helped yourself to one of their dark wood benches when they've called your order! The restroom was, yes, as cozy as the overall venue...but sufficiently clean + stocked. Watch out, tho- The hot water runs hotter than the devil's temperature! In closing, you can take Uncle Henry's to the bank. Yes, you'll part with upwards of a Jackson, mebbe even two. But you'll enjoy the treat, cuz the caliber of food is very bit as real as the hammer (aka Louisville Slugger) that Hamnering Hank used to bash all of his home runs with.
