Since this was during the covid pandemic, I was allowed to go in only for the initial consultation and for her first infusion. They have a great covid protocol in place, so we never felt nervous about her visits. During the initial consult, Dr. Reese spent a long time with us, explaining in detail about the cancer and about what to expect during the treatments. He drew pictures and wrote key words on some sheets of paper we were able to take home and study. We felt he really cared about her outcome. They have a web portal for communication that allowed us to submit questions and usually had Dr. Reese or a staff member get back to us that same day. They were also great at working through insurance issues with us. We never felt overlooked or ignored, and my wife said all of the front office staff and nurses were kind and helpful. Unlike restaurant reviews where you end it by saying "I can't wait to come back!", well, I'll say we do feel comfortable continuing to see Dr. Reese for follow-ups, and should a similar need arise in the future, UCLA Health And Dr. Reese will likely be the first place we ask for!

Sadly, the latter comprise 95% of the medical staffs you will encounter in America today, aka apathetic twenty-something minions preoccupied with their cellphones rather than the human patient standing directly in front of them (and the source of their paychecks). In complete contrast to this sad norm is the entire team lead by Dr. Ken Tokita at KSK Cancer Center of Irvine. I have never had the pleasure of dealing with such a caring, professional, and friendly medical staff as I did there. They honestly make you feel like family rather than an intrusion on their time. How refreshing is that? Dr. Tokita has been a pioneer over decades in the field of radiation therapy for cancer treatment. His knowledge base could easily be intimidating to patients [I'm looking at you, other doctors] but he's a soft-spoken guy with a sense of humor who could put a Tasmanian devil at ease. The office runs like a Japanese bullet train: state-of-the-art, efficient, spotless, comfortable, and welcoming. In more than 50 appointments there I NEVER once had to wait past my scheduled appointment time. [Seriously. That last sentence is not a typo.] On at least two occassions I heard about a "state-of-the art" cancer radiation study on the radio on my way to this office. Each time even the technicians at KSK were already well aware of these particular "ground breaking" studies and knew enough to spin saucers around them. I was impressed. If there was ever any lack of cohesiveness amongst this staff regarding my treatment, I never had a slightest whiff of it. Whether I will survive my cancer, apparently that's determined by someone much higher up the food chain than me or anyone in this office. But Dr. Tokita cites a general 96% rate for guys like me. So contrary to my basic nature, I believe him and I trust him.

I had surgery on Friday the 26th -Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center and Ambulatory Care building LUCI Health Orange County, CA Again, this place is newish, it looks great. We parked in the gold structure. We came out around the side by valet. ( I don't think it was the main entrance. Because it was a lot of walking to the place we needed to check in) ALSO, they validate your parking ticket. I met, Daniel. He took care of me. Gave me my hospital bracelets and a wheelchair to sit in the lobby. He was extremely nice. I am fortunate and do not have cancer, yet it was at the cancer center. And for the horrible things you see in there, you have to have a smile and keep it together. He did a great job at that. Lobby was very nice!! It had vending machines Places to plug in your phone! AND, my favorite, they had an outdoor lobby attached to the indoor lobby. So you could sit outside and get air They have a nice electronic board on the wall showing who's being prepped, who's going in, who's stable, who's done and etc. they really keep the family updated They were a little late and running behind. I was finally wheeled back where my amazing nurse, GRACIE, took care of me. She sympathized so much with me. She told me she knew girls that were just as bad with my condition and it's horrible. She did everything she could to make me comfortable including bringing me ice packs. When it came to giving me my IV, she had to place it on the side of my wrist. Not my arm or top of my hand. Side of my wrist. And I barely bruised and barely cried lol. Also, after I was in bed and prepped (took 45 mins) they called my mom back to see me before my surgery. Dr. Colleen Coleman was recommended by three friends independent from one another (including two…read moredoctors whom we know) to tackle my wife's bilateral neck dissection for metastisiced thyroid cancer. We were absolutely terrified at first, but knew we were in good hands. Dr. Coleman spends the necessary time with her patients and often has to deliver difficult news, so there can be a wait. Must surgeons would just rush you through. Getting through this surgery was of course emotionally and physically demanding, so this was important. The surgery went smoothly. Dr. Coleman set us up with an oncologist and endocrinologist whom are also each at the top of their game. Nine months post-operation, my wife's cancer is under control due to Dr. Coleman's follow-ups. High-dose radiation took care of the thyroid cancer in her lungs, which is showing no signs of recurring, and the slim surgical scar across her neck is fading fast. Dr Coleman's skill is evident in how faint the scar is and continues to fade over time. There are no signs of any cancer remaining in her neck. We feel like we received the best care possible and are forever grateful for Dr. Colleen Coleman for saving my wife's life.
