Thelma's food has always been a HIT! Why the 3 stars is crazy to me. I had my Birthday party there, and everyone who attended continued to rave about the delicious food. I have also attended other events or just stopped in for a bite to eat. The wings are Fabulous! The fries with the jerk chicken..man o' man.. makes you come back for more. The flavor/seasoning of the food is top notch. The rasta pasta with salmon is Delicious. The fried fish, mac n cheese, greens and yams are soooo Good! I have never been disappointed. And the servers are Phenomenal. They greeted me when I came in. Were very attentive throughout my visit. The prices are competitive, so no need to complain about that. I almost forgot to mention the fun you can have there with the Karaoke. The DJ I wish I remembered his name.. All I know is that he represented on a Friday night! It was Epic. I was invited to a birthday party here from one of my high school friends . The inside of the restaurant is definitely set up for social media pictures. In my past experiences I noticed that restaurants that are social media influenced really don't have there food game on point, but the vibe is great. In this instance it was the case. The party vibe was great and we had a great time but the food in my opinion was okay. I ordered Catfish, Collard Greens, and Macaroni and Cheese. The Catfish was crispy and flavorful but it had way to much salt for me. The Collard Greens were delicious and they were fresh. I could tell when I picked them up because there were long strands of Collard Greens and not the frozen ones. The Macaroni and Cheese was lacking flavor and that gooey cheese feeling. It was just noodles and cheese. You can tell there wasn't a cheese sauce incorporated. What an amazing dinner !!! I haven't been here in over 10 years and I remember the bread pudding they had during the brunch buffet at the time. Fast forward to dinner today and it was great. The catfish was perfectly seasoned, yams just had the right sweetness and the mac amd cheese was good. The other sides were also very good. Perhaps because we walked in to place an order to go but service was horrible from the beginning till the very end. They weren't busy, 1 couple eating in! DJ playing.. it was 5:20 pm Saturday. Server was not happy that I asked to sit in a real chair while waiting. The waiting area is a small low worn cushion.. in the window. I ordered two meals with cabbage and both were given with green beans. I was not notified of it until I sat down to eat at home 50 miles away. Then the Mac n cheese was the crumbs of the pan. My sister and I were in town for a concert and were looking to support our own and I'm glad we stumbled across Miss Thelma's. We had Jennifer as our waitress and the service she provided amazing! And as you can see from the picture, my salmon and grits with sweet jerk sauce was real good. And to add a candle to the cake, they had a live dj who was jamming on that good Sunday!! Ordered rare steak got a steak that was already cooked and then re cooked so it was well passed over done. The shrimp had 0 flavor mac and cheese is not good and the yams could use help but they were okay. The high light of this place are chicken wings and drinks nothing else worth ordering. The manager is rude and they are more concerned with getting bad reviews and people being encouraged to not go there than they are with the dingy decor and lazy staff. The staff were two young men with wrinkled clothes on that played with their phones vs making sure you were okay. One of them even lied and pretended he did t hear me request rare steak when he wrote it down. The manager approached me because i was filming a review on how dry and nasty my food was. They took the meal off of the bill even after I told them I'd pay in full. Everytime i go there the food sucks and the last time was 10 years ago. This is a good spot to go for brunch or a party vibe. The music is too loud for conversation but it is a fun spot. My biggest complaint has been the service. The waitresses my last two experiences were unattentive and it was not busy. We had no silverware after receiving our food and had to wait ten minutes before she came out the kitchen for us to even ask for silverware. We were the only table there. The food is great and flavorful I love the loaded fries with jerk chicken and the Saturday brunch menu is great. I'm sorry to say I'm amending my review from years ago, and not in a good way. We used to love this place and came here regularly for many years. Unfortunately, the quality of the food and overall experience has really gone downhill. Virtually EVERY time we get takeout there is something missing or wrong with our order. How can that be? So we decided to eat in this past weekend. We went for an early dinner and as soon as we opened the door, the pounding, loud, intense club music was absolutely deafening--this was just a little after 6 pm, not 10 pm. I asked the woman at the front if there was a private party going on and she said no and offered us a table. We changed our minds about eating in--how could anyone even have a conversation? We placed our order (I really hate having no menu and having to scan a QR code to do that). We waited in the car to preserve our eardrums, got the bags of food and went home. Even with placing the order in person, they STILL got it wrong! We got three orders of collard greens, not the mac&cheese and coleslaw we ordered. A dinner that we requested Spanish rice as a side came with just French fries. The corn bread was burned. The chicken in the "Big Mama" order was a dry, tiny breast smaller than my palm and a tiny crunchy bone of a wing with zero meat on it. I remember when I couldn't even finish a breast because it was too big. It was really bad. I tried calling multiple times when we got home but no one was answering the phone. What a shame. This place used to be a welcoming spot with artwork and plants and a fish tank and inspirational posters. Now it's a dark, generic gray and black interior with glaring lights in the front windows that make you feel like you're looking into headlights. There's no color or art or anything to make it cheerful or have any personality. The women working there were very pleasant as always, but we figured they probably couldn't even hear our order over the blasting music. The yams were on a health diet ( not sweetened the way it should) . No juice from beans on the rice. Just dry and basic. spent 52$ to not even finish the food. The food and service is always good. I love the brunch the most and the DJ Juan Coon plays great music as well while eating. The chicken and shrimp pineapple bowl is my favorite. If you come on a Saturday or Sunday definitely book a reservation or arrive at 11am especially if it's a holiday or there Reggae themed brunch. I ordered take out meatloaf entree for lunch so you get to choose 2 sides which are included all for $14. I chose cabbage and potato salad and added on an order of cornbread. We drove from Massachusetts, I checked their site fir hours and to see if reservations were necessary (no mention), upon arrival it is full (but open seats visible) so of course one hostess says full fir night no seats and asks if we had a reservation but can order to go, I persisted letting her know we drive from Ma and nothing on web to indicate reservations and another hostess did seat us which I appreciate. Recently (after about a 2 yr break) I returned, hoping for the same great fish and same great service, but the Sunday buffet experience has definitely went downhill. Went in and the place was empty except for a party of 3. We stood @the front awkwardly because we weren't greeted, but there were 2 girls standing at the desk talking. I guess we interrupted their busy day. We were told we could seat ourselves. So first we looked around and the table that could accommodate the 5 of us was in the middle of breeze from the ac or ventilation unit. The we thought about moving tables together. Then we settled for the table with a sofa on 1 side. Well the sofa rocked. So any time someone moved, shifted, or got up, we had to brace ourselves. The positive is that all the food was amazing this time, not just the fish. Everything I ate was enjoyable, seasoned well, and cooked to perfection. Definitely an improvement from the previous years. Now where they failed is the customer service. It was pretty much non-existent. Maybe it was because they add 18% to parties of 4 or more. I sat there thirsty because I finished my iced tea and was never offered another, which I would have gladly paid for. So I had to join in on the pitcher of water that was on the table. I know Sunday is buffet style, but someone should have asked how we were. There were random ppl that cleared our plates when we stacked them on the corner of the table. Random ppl meaning kitchen staff and the bartender. There is also a bar in the back corner which I don't remember that being there years ago. At least if 1 of there 2 "hostesses/servers" had come over, maybe I could have gotten another iced tea. This used to be a warm, friendly, uplifting, bustling atmosphere, but now it's just dark and cold. Hopefully they can work on whatever went wrong over the past few years. The title soul food holds a lot of weight to me so you better mean it... For me, the sweet potato/yams were off, I like that brown sugar through and through, meaning the sweet isn't just on top of the potato, when I cut into it I can see and taste cinnamon and brown sugar crystals is how i think it should be. The mac and cheese need a creamy , cheese taste but can't be runny. Some look the part but just taste like noodles. Now the greens were fire. Some of the best I've had at a soul food restaurant. Stopped in for lunch on my first trip to Bridgeport. Street parking was easy. The restaurant was busy but it didn't take long to be seated. They had a live DJ. Played great music. It was a little loud but still enjoyable. Ordered chicken and waffles and the Jamaican style oxtails dinner. The chicken and waffles is served with a caramel sauce that was really good. The chicken was wing flings but I found that I preferred that over larger pieces and it was fried and seasoned perfectly. Oxtails were fall off the bone tender. Everything was delish. Today I had an opportunity to finally check out Miss Thelma's. This is my second time trying to find this location since the name of the business is not on the business. If you walking down the street you have to ask people out on the street where the restaurant is because there is no name on the window. However, going in to the restaurants the aesthetics is beautiful and the young ladies at the front desk are very polite. My order was taken and although it was higher than the price that was quoted on the menu, I still paid without complaint. I ordered fried catfish with macaroni and cheese, collard greens with a side of Candy yams. I was expecting at least two pieces of fish but I got one fillet and it was season well and crunchy. I didn't like the taste of the fish but thought that it should've been at least two pieces. I've been moved on to the macaroni and cheese which did not look tantalizing but I gave it the benefit of the doubt. I tried it and it was just as dry as it looked and it wasn't cheesy nor flavorful. I tried the collard greens and they were a bit better and then finally I tried the candy yams which look like boiled sweet potatoes that were in a cup. The sweet potatoes were good but they were not candy yams or the version that I've seen of a candy yams should I say. They were sweet, but I was just expecting to see the candid syrup over the yam In my overall opinion, looking at the plate, size, quality and taste, would I have paid $22 for this? The answer would've been no. I really did enjoy the taste of the fish but I believe that if everything else sort of match the quality of the piece of fish with the quantity of what I was getting and it taste just as good as the fish did then I would have been pleased. After 5 years I'm back in B'port and a good old friend took me to Miss Thelma's cause he knew I love to eat soul food. I ordered the fried whiting, with collard greens and mac 'n cheese. After taking the order we were served with cornbread cupcakes covered with butter which was melting like the snow in spring. The plates had good size portions, and amazingly I was not able to finish it all. Good thing that I have some hungry mouths at home and after finishing the doggie bag they confirmed that it was very good. The service was kinda slow, even though there were only 3 other customers.
