I popped in here one morning after grabbing a blackened catfish sandwich from Ramsey's Diner next door en route to Nashville on a road trip. I'm a sucker for good pie (insert-dirty-joke-here) and couldn't resist Missy's siren scent of freshly baked pie crust in the morning. What is a road trip for if not to eat all kinds of rich & decadent, oh-so-bad-for-you foods that you don't indulge in back home? The first order of business was getting a slice of Mayday pie which is a chocolate-pecan concoction very similar to Kentucky's own derby pie. I first fell in love with this while living in Alabama and can't seem to find it anywhere in Illinois. I asked the girl at the counter what she recommended for my second slice (provisions for later in the trip, of course... and by later, I mean less than 12 hours later) and she said cherry was their top seller. Cherry it was! I'm not ashamed to admit that I ate the Mayday pie as soon as it hit my grubby little hands and it was everything I remembered it to be and more. Me and that pie? We had a moment, I'm telling you. The cherry made an amazing breakfast, especially after being heated for a just a few seconds in the microwave along side a nice, steaming cup of mediocre hotel coffee. read more

Eat more dessert, life is short. The best pie here is the coconut, but they are all fantastic. I have tried many, many options they offer and always leave happy. Sometimes I want two slices, please do not tell anyone what a fool I am for pie, pie, pie. Everything is super fresh. How can you go wrong in a pie specialty shop? Do not listen to the naysayers here, all the pies are made by hand, flaky crust, mile high meringue...I always stop in here when visiting Lexington and wish they had a place in Louisville. Yum! Meh- Staff was super nice but the pie....meh. I got the coconut cream pie and the crust was soggy all the way through. It was the same with the butterscotch and key lime pie. Most of the fillings are made from canned ingredients that you can see on the shelves in the dining area. $5.00 for soggy crust and canned fruit filling....I'll just get ice cream next time. read more

I love pie! Sadly, the venerable Thornberry's in Louisville is closed. I never met a pie there I didn't like and always stopped for one when I went to Churchill for the races. I'd call on my way to ask what they had for the day and they'd save my selection. I've had Missy's pie only once, blackberry. It was good, but I'm not at all convinced her pies are worth the price. Missy's pies look good, and I like their cherry almond crisp, but am very disappointed that they use Cool Whip/ or other whipped topping instead of real whipped cream, and even so, list it as "whipped cream" on menus. "Whipped topping" is NOT whipped cream. Would also love to see whipped cream instead of meringue on their cream pies. I have always seen pies with meringue topping listed as meringue pies, not cream pies. Also, the crusts are made with shortening, in case you are avoiding partially-hydrogenated fats. I don't expect pie to be "health food", but I prefer all-natural ingredients. If that doesn't matter to you, then Missy's pies are probably great!! read more

Not a cute little shop, but really good pie. Try going on several occasions to experience the full array of pies, which changes frequently. One complaint I have is the price - although the slices are huge, they are $4 a slice - and for me, that means real whipped cream, fresh fruit, etc. You'll get a very tasty, very lovely slice of pie here, but also fake whipped topping and standard issue sugared fruit out of plastic tub. Commercial pie crusts, industrial sized cans of sliced and cooked apples for the homemade apple pie, under-cooked scrambled egg pies that are misleadingly called quiches, food products in the display case that are suddenly not for sale, cloyingly sweet pies, and a snarky facetious attendant at the counter, and you have Missy's Pies. Seriously, it doesn't cost $52 to make your own cheesecake. Just saying... 3 stars for the pecan pie slice that was the only thing that tasted good from the cherry, chocolate, "quiche" pies bought. When I walked up, a young lady was heading out the door with a floor rug... strange, I know. I don't know if she was shaking the dirt off or what, I proceeded by heading inside. She followed me in and proceeded to wait on me. I was a bit stunned, but I quickly asked for the soda and tea pricing. I ordered a canned diet Pepsi for $2.00, sat down in the tiny inside dining area that dubbed as a storage area too. I was walking around the area, boutique shopping and was hoping to enjoy a slice of pie. After I watched her wait on the next person who walked in, at no point washing her hands or putting on gloves, I decided to sit and enjoy my overpriced soda. There was a guy there too, he seemed to be in charge of the behind the scene baking though. Almost everything was out in the open. There were pies for sale in the display case, but a lot in the background left to cool or air out, why I haven't a clue. Just another observation. Does it take one bad egg to ruin a Lexington mecca? Checked out this pie shop after dinner with my boyfriend and another couple. My boyfriend and I split the caramel apple pie à la mode which was delicious and not too sweet. They got the brownie peanut butter combination pie à la mode, which was a little sweet for my taste but they loved it. Prices seemed a little more than I was used to for bakery, but still certainly cheaper and better quality than most desserts at restaurants. How can you not love this place? The moment you walk in, you're blasted by a rich, buttery scent. It's the most comforting smell. So far, I've tried the Pecan, Key Lime, Lemon, and Chocolate Brownie (?). The Key Lime pie is hands down my favorite and it is also hands down the best key lime pie I've ever had. I Had lunch and a slice of pie after my doctors office visit. The turkey sandwich and potato salad were to die for. The pie was some sort of chocolate mousse it was phenomenal. It melted in my mouth. About two weeks later my husband came home with a fresh key lime pie from Missy's. It was finished by me in two days.... They charge a premium price for a pie that you can replace with a frozen Kroger pie and be more pleased with. To top off the lackluster pies, the customer service is shameful. Got slices of lemon meringue, chocolate explosion cheesecake, and a pie with chocolate, banana and whip cream (I forget what it was called). The chocolate cheese cake was possibly one of the best slices of cheese cake I've ever had (so much so that we ended up buying a second slice). The lemon meringue was spot on: exactly the way I remember my grandmother making it. The banana chocolate was ehhh... maybe just not my thing, but my daughter and wife were also luke warm to it. I will preface this review by saying that Missy's pies are absolutely delicious. However, the quality of this product does not compare with the level of customer service provided by Missy's. When I lived in Lexington I would often visit the store and thought highly of the individuals and quality of service I received. As I am visiting over a holiday weekend I reached out to Missy's to inquire about the pie reservation process. Rather than receiving the same welcoming I have been used to in years past the woman working said "no" before I could even finish asking my question and followed up with "it's the holiday weekend and you should have already ordered." There was no mention of the fact that they open at 8:00am with first come pies or how their ordering process works. I would recommend if you want a pie from them to reach out to Ramsey's instead, seriously disappointing customer service and quite frankly distasteful behavior. read more

This may be the best pie in Lexington, KY. Hidden in the small, but historic Chevy Chase area, Missy's Pie's are some of the best i've ever had. Ate the pecan pie when I was there and was weary when I had come to my last bite. Bought a coconut cream pie for my wedding anniversary. Although the pie looked pretty, it was disappointing. It had 4 inches of meringue and about an inch of filling. I hate meringue. I am a friend to a woman with down syndrome. I hang out with her once a week and we just walk around to different shops and explore Lexington. She had never been in Missy's Pie Shop before so she wanted to go in there. When we walked in, her eyes lit up. She wanted everything. Sadly, I'm not allowed to buy her anything when we're together. Dumb rule. But anyways, a woman working there at the time named Katie made our day. She said hello to both of us but she mainly addressed my friend. Katie talked to her like a normal person with no disabilities whatsoever. She told my friend all about the pies and answered her hundreds of questions without seeming to be annoyed at all. She didn't talk down to her. When Katie saw us leaving without buying anything, she asked my friend if she wanted a free piece of pie. She didn't ask me. She asked my friend. She respected that even though my friend has down syndrome, she is still her own person who can make her own decisions. My friend absolutely loved that Katie asked her and not me. Katie paid for a piece of pie for my friend because "she is the best customer ever and a new friend". I will never forget how kind Katie was to us. Okay I'm giving one star for a few reasons. First, I stopped in for a sandwich. While the lady in front of me was waiting for her order I watched the behind the scenes and WOOOOO!!! Okay so the lady taking the orders was also making them, cool whatever. BUT than in the middle of making the order she decided to break down a box on the floor and pick up a empty flour bag on the floor as well. No hand wash or anything and continued on. My thinking was alright she isn't making the food the other woman in the back is. So I proceeded to order and paid and all and watched the box breaking woman actually make my sandwich. I wanted to barf!! Seriously!! No hand washing??? No gloves??? It should be a LAW to have to wear gloves when handling food!!! I was so disgusted and I did not eat the sandwich and I will never ever go back! Second...my family is a fan of Ramsey's and we always get the "homemade" pie for dessert. On my visit to Missy's I noticed the piles of pre made pie crust and I am so disappointed to know in fact they are not truly 100% homemade! With the amount of pies they seem to have to make for the three restaurants alone you would think they would have a larger and cleaner establishment for that. I visited Missy's for the first time over the weekend. I got a slice of keylime pie and my friends got the Butterscotch and the pie of the day that had pecans and chocolate or walnuts, I can't remember. We all tried a bite of each others and they were all 3 very very yummy. I then decided to get a whole Coconut Cream Pie for my dad for fathers day. He has had some issues with eating because he has no appetite and I know he likes coconut, I had hoped that this may actually be something that he would want to eat. Success..... He not only ate one piece, he ate a few and so did my mom. I didn't expect her to like it at all and she loved it. They even said the crust is good, which usually pie crusts are just pie crusts that crumble and are dry. These pie crusts are so good you enjoy every bite! I also got the frozen Chicken pot pie to go and cooked it when I got home. Missy gave me the cooking instructions and was super sweet to us while we were there. I have never in my life had a chicken pot pie that tasted so good. It has fresh ingredients. It doesn't taste like any of the veggies were canned or frozen. It had the perfect amount of chicken and big hunks of real potatoes that are seriously cooked to perfection. Now I wish I had bought more than one pot pie. I cannot wait to go back and get more stuff and try some of the other items they sell. I loved the simple decor and the little eating area, it is perfect for its intended use. I loved being able to see them making the pies from across the room. Knowing it is all handmade with love and care is something you don't see anymore. It is well worth the stop.
