We went to the First Night New Years Eve shoes by the School of Rock performance bands. Band members get lots of help setting up and getting going on songs--it's harder than it looks! Thanks again to the staff for making it work. During stay-at-Home time SoR has worked hard to give students different performance activities, Jacob had two open mic times. SoR also edited student instrumental and vocal performances of "Wayward Son" into one group performance. Finally Steve has taken many measures to keep the school safe on reopening. We're back now for solo and group drum lessons!

Yes, ever since my first baby scratch, I've been trying to scratch anything in a circular form around me. Not just records, or cds, I'm talking dinner plates and frisbees. This was the best new years resolution I've followed up on: dropping the needle. Most of my dj friends back home are all digital house djs, so turntables are completely new. Most of dj'ing is completely new to me, so I took the intro class. The classes use the Serato Scratch Live software. I arrived early for class my first day, and was allowed to play around with the equipment. I was a rough start cause I had some issues figuring out the screen display, and I was stuck in the Gucci Mane bin for a good twenty minutes. Gucci Mane=worst southern rapper ever, it was distressing. The rest of the set up involves a state of the art mixer and two turntables. Then the skilled instructors took over, and we learned how to scratch, radio dj and beat match. I highly recommend classes with DJ As One. He kinda sounds like a grandfather dj (he's really young actually), with his stories of back in day. All about how they used to drag heavy crates and buy two copies of the same record to mix, and how us kids have it so much better these days with the software. I would recommend the classes to anyone interested in music. As a side note you have to walk through Bach 2 Rock (a music school to get here), be prepared to walk through hallways of high school rock bands complimenting each other on how they sound exactly like Fugazi (eye roll).

So when I saw that Beat…read moreRefinery was opening on a local blog, I thought it could be just what I need to get out of my funk and get creative. Beat Refinery is a school within a school, located in Bach 2 Rock. They offer a 6 week courses in Intro to DJ for $375, and will have more advanced courses in the future. The classes meet weekly for a couple hours, and you can sign up for additional practice time at a first-come-first serve basis for free if you are taking a class. I had my first class last night, and let me tell you: if you love music and technology--this is something you should try. Each student gets their own DJ set up---which includes computer, turntables, mixer, headphones, and speaker. From what I am told, the equipment is top of the line. The whole class is built around learning Serato Scratch Live, the computer program that allows you to mix, scratch, and beat juggle with the best of them (if you have the skills). The computers are loaded with tunes, and you can also bring in your own music to suit and create you own style. Additionally, the teachers are pro's. My class is taught by DJ As-1 and DJ Stylus Chris, who were both very helpful and energetic in helping us newbies learn the basics. At the end of the 6 week course we are all expected to be able to do a 3-5 minute set and answer some basic questions about the DJ'ing So while I think I have a few song ideas up my sleeve---I still need to work on my DJ name....time to get to my homework.

We just had a blast every single lesson. He gave us options for steps and helped us build a dance we were comfortable with, was interesting, and totally customized to our song. He helped us get so comfortable with the steps and, as we got better, gave us tips to improve even more and flourishes to make the dance a bit more engaging for the audience. Having been a part of many weddings, he's full of helpful tips in general for the wedding, like how to walk on and off after the dance, where my husband should go when we transition to father/daughter dance, and to remember to smile especially during the finale. It definitely shows that he has worked with a lot of couples with their wedding dances, but also has officiated weddings himself, so he has so much helpful knowledge! My older son is now 8 and has had so many opportunities to perform, doing wonderful things for his confidence, even in front of a large crowd. Both kids have even made great friends! I've recommended a number of families to the school and they all love it as well. I highly recommend giving it a try, Carl and Nick run the school and are the nicest and most accomadating guys. Was willing to roll with that for a little bit, as technology does bring some interesting opportunities for improvement - but I observed that a) the kids were given synth keyboards (which have a very different feel), not digital pianos, to play on, b) the keyboards were set way too high relative to their seats for them to learn to play. The feedback inevitably was that our kids were doing a great job, even when they hadn't practiced at all - I understand the positivity and I know few people have time to put in the necessary practice (I myself have 15ish years of piano so know what kind of practice is required) but it felt like it was more about just going through the motions and getting the money for a class than actually teaching anybody anything. Then one of the instructors made a comment about my kid that seemed wildly out of line, so we quit. While I'm sure this is not everyone's experience, I'd say it's better to go with a place that's more serious about teaching, less franchisey.

On the day of the party, my naturalist showed up on time and proceeded to set up his area. From there, the show was perfectly executed, was totally attentive to the birthday boy and his friends, and was a blast for all! Admittedly, I couldn't help but to join in with my reptile finger, feeling our reptilian friends as they passed by. In the end, everyone (both young and old) learned something new and had fun!
