I ask the region the morel for from, he went off on some tangent about forgers and licensed foragers not sharing there spots. It's a freaking permit. I wasn't asking for longitude and latitude... I've been foraging since I was able to walk, able to identify at least 15 different types of mushrooms as well as over 100 edible plants in this region. His morrels were picked out of a burn so basically garbage single cell wall.. There is just no excuse for treating people poorly. The other mushrooms looked great.

They have a variety of oyster mushrooms depending on the season (yellow, blue, pink, etc), chestnut mushrooms, and seasonally foraged mushrooms. They also have grow-at-home kits, which make a great gift, and tinctures (lion's mane, reishi, cordyceps). The retail store also has mushroom-related gifts -- super cool. They let me know they were wholesale only (though they do sell direct to the public at some farmers markets and their ilk), however they were super nice and suggested I check out Chehelam Flats Farm Market as they stock Van Hevelingen's plants for the spring and summer. Chehelam Flats is open Fridays and Saturdays from 10-5, so when I was in the area last weekend, I excitedly made my way there. They have a couple parking spaces on the side of their building, and as I exited my car, I noticed all their fields of lavender! I had not known that was a big part of this market, but goodness, I sure do love me some lavender. I was greeted by the lovely proprietress who let me know their lavender will be in bloom late June to July, and that they will offer bunches pre-cut or you can cut your own. She was also quick to suggest local businesses and events as I am new to the area and was just all around so kind and charming! Back to the plants, I zeroed in on all the fun and unusual herbs, and quickly had a growing box (okay, two!) of goodies: sweet cicely, variegated lemon balm, variegated society garlic, French sorrel, licorice sweet flag, pink rosemary, eau de cologne mint, yerba Buena, and a Chinese chrysanthemum. They also have plenty more traditional herb offerings, native plants as well as some flowers, not to mention I don't even know how many lavender plants in a variety of sizes. Inside, there were some houseplants, along with many kitchen and home goods: candles, soap and other bath and body items, tea towels, even treats like pate de fruit (a favorite!). They had gorgeous wooden pieces included a rolling pin that a totally fell in love with. You could put together such a lovely gift here! The whole area was just gorgeous and while you should absolutely visit when you can take advantage of fresh lavender, I had a wonderful experience without it. They will also have other plants like tomatoes as the weather warms. I cannot wait to return.

I…read morethink this company doesnt know that these are hybrid seeds and need to be purchased every year. You can't just use seeds from last year's plants. They dont work. Mine have a greenish color with hard skin and don't taste good. I plant Sungolds every year, so know what they're supposed to be like. Avoid this company for veggie starts.

Now that peppers are in season the folks from Westwind Gardens…read morehave their chili pepper roasters going full blast, firing up bags of sweet and hot chili peppers at the Saturday Farmers Market at PSU. The smell of the roasting chilis is irrestible. We picked up a bag rated 3-5 on the heat scale a few hours ago and enjoyed them with eggs. Delicious. We plan to get another bag of 3-5s next week along with a second bag a step or two higher up on the heat scale. Word is Westwind will be roasting peppers at the PSU Saturday market through the end of October. The Westwind tables also offer baskets of over two dozen different kinds of fresh chili peppers for sale. The sweet peppers include California wonders, corno di toros, cubanelles, Italias, lipsticks, sweet bananas, and sweet cayennes. Hot peppers: anaheims, anchos, chocolate habeneros, fireballs, Hungarian hot wax, jalapenos, New Mex Joe Parkers, puriras, pimienta de padron, Sapporo hots, Scotch bonnets, serranos, and Thai hots, among others. All of Westwind's plants are grown without the use of neo-nicotinoid pesticides or seeds that have been genetically modified, and all of their herb and vegetable starts are certified organic.

It has saved us a tremendous amount on our grocery bill, to the point we don't go to the grocery store nearly as often as we used to. I was even able to freeze much of it, and able to use it over the course of the winter. We pick up our CSA near our home at a market style pickup - we get to pick our own produce out of the bins, make choices between certain vegetables, and even put unwanted produce in a trade bin for others or to trade. The quality is excellent, and so much better than anything you could get at a grocery store. I love that they send out a newsletter with the upcoming produce you will get - it gives you time to meal plan and buy ingredients for your upcoming share! If you're looking for a CSA in the Portland area, I can't recommend Love Farm Organics enough - I am actually finishing a winter CSA with another organic farm and it came nowhere near the quality of this, and I'm really looking forward to it starting up again soon!

They're a 4th-generation family farm and they're really lovely people. Their produce is excellent quality, they have pick-up spots all over the area and their site has lots of resources for nutritional info and recipes on preparing the things they grow. They've introduced me to things I've never seen and really widened my palate. Their produce is organic so it isn't polluted with poisonous pesticides and doesn't poison the soil or kill pollinators like bees and butterfiles, it's healthy and delicious and actually comes out to cost less than produce at the store by my house AND I know I'm supporting a local family farm and helping keep it there. You just really can't beat an organic family farm CSA membership and everyone should try one! They also offer some work exchange and take SNAP to make their produce available to as many people as possible.
