It was our first time with Source Farms. We ordered a fresh turkey for thanksgiving and the taste was phenomenal. I usually brine my turkey but had a time crunch and ended up just using olive oil with baking powder. The stuffing and gravy captured that great flavor from the turkey and were the best tasting I have ever had. The turkey was so flavorful and moist, my family couldn't tell I skipped the brining step! Ordering on the website was a breeze and I appreciated the follow-up confirmation call on my order and turkey size. When picking up the order, it was great seeing how clean the farm is and care provided to the free range chickens, ducks, and geese. Source Farms just launched their new online ordering site last week. It was perfect timing as I had just run out of beef. The site was super easy to navigate and just $20 for shipping-far less than the cost for me to drive to the farm. The order just arrived via UPS, still frozen solid and packed with dry ice and good insulation. The couple running this farm had contacted me to make them a custom copper range hood back on 10/10/16. My Wife was very excited about this, as she had heard of them and wanted to barter for some of their top notch grass fed beef and other produce she had heard such good things about. Their farm fresh eggs are also quite noticeably better, compared to any store bought eggs. They even have more yellow color. We have also enjoyed their kombucha and mead. I later installed aluminum gutters in part exchange. You can see photos on my Facebook business profiles. They are a great source for truly organic produce and meat if you are willing to drive out to their cute farm out in Yamhill Oregon. They also run a B&B in the back section of their house. This year, we decided we would explore getting a side of beef. We hunted around and kept coming back to Kookoolan Farms. The experience from the moment we inquired was nothing short of wonderful. The easy, menu-driven way to select your meat cuts, packaging desires, just so simple. Pick up was easy (despite COVID and all that went with being safe), and then we were off to fill our freezer. We have dogs and were even invited to take a bit of the extra bones and organ meat that many people pass on. So the important thing is...quality. We chose to start with grilling a pair of NY Steaks. You almost do not need a knife. It is so flavorful and just melts in your mouth. We will be back for sure. (And we also added a bottle of mead to go with the great cookbook we brought home.) We recently visited and placed an order for a lamb share and beef share at Kookoolan Farms. It began when Chrissie explained the process of how to order their organic lamb, beef, or chicken meat, paying and pick up. Since we ordered both lamb and beef, Chrissie gave us two free books (we chose 'how to grill meat ' & 'recipes for various meat') for each order plus another free book. She also provided a mead tasting (won silver in international competition) that was excellent. Afterwards, Chrissie provided a tour of their farm. The lamb which we picked up (they provide a large heavy duty blue bag) about three weeks ago is very tender and does not taste gamey at all. I called Chrissie and found that they do not have duck eggs currently; however Chrissie is so nice and helpful and provided me info on other duck eggs seller near her. Farmers don't get any better than Chrissie and her family. They're conscientious, compassionate, and responsible in their stewardship of the animals and land, and their prices of beef shares and seafood (check out their website for details) are certainly quite fair. We've purchased beef shares, seafood, mead, and kombucha from Kookoolan and have been delighted with every single product. Beef shares are paid for by hanging weight, which makes complete sense because you're investing in the life and treatment of the animal, not only the finished piece of meat that winds up on your plate. And ultimately, you pay less per pound of consumable meat than what you would purchasing comparable meat at grocery stores. To understand what makes Kookoolan better than many other farms--particularly large ventures that care more about quantity than quality--it's important to know something about CAFOs. According to the USDA, "AFOs [animal feeding operations] congregate animals, feed, manure and urine, dead animals, and production operations on a small land area. Feed is brought to the animals rather than the animals grazing or otherwise seeking feed in pastures, fields, or on rangeland" and CAFOs [concentrated animal feeding operations] are "more than 1000 animal units (an animal unit is defined as an animal equivalent of 1000 pounds live weight and equates to 1000 head of beef cattle, 700 dairy cows, 2500 swine weighing more than 55 lbs, 125 thousand broiler chickens, or 82 thousand laying hens or pullets) confined on site for more than 45 days during the year. Any size AFO that discharges manure or wastewater into a natural or man-made ditch, stream or other waterway is defined as a CAFO, regardless of size." Last month, my family and I picked up our first share of beef and a share of halibut. We opted for the 1/8 share sampler, which gave us a variety of cuts. We are so happy with our shares of beef and halibut. The meat is flavorful and juicy. So far we've made burgers, soup, and stir fry using the beef--and everything has been delicious. The halibut is the freshest fish we've had and so yummy and moist when cooked. I'm looking forward to working my way through the other cuts of beef. May be the best tasting hamburger I have ever eaten. I just bought my first share of Kookoolan beef. I have not yet tried the steaks but the hamburger I cooked on my Traeger was absolutely amazing! I have been enjoying Kookoolan Farms for years having first encountered Chrissy and Kooroosh when they were doing the Sunday market at Wilson High School. Mostly, I was focused on their poultry. We have been disappointed of late with the chicken found in even our wonderful high-end New Seasons Market. As we all become conscious of the health and environmental benefits of sustainably raised food stocks, the formerly great commercial producers are being pushed to by demand toward greater output. That means corners get cut. For example, water-chilling is much faster and more efficient than air-chilling chickens after processing. The problem is that it significantly changes the texture and flavor of the meat making it watery and rubbery rather than velvety and fibrous. Kookoolan farms remains the real deal. I harkens memories of the way chickens tasted in the 50s and 60s. And I am confident of the humanity and responsibility in the way these animals are raised, fed, slaughtered and processed. I am a wine collector and sampled Chrissy's Polish-Style Orange Blossom Mead out of a Mason jar one day at the market and became a huge fan. I have trotted that out "blind" for my fancy wine friends a few times all are completely stumped and thrilled with the rich, exotic flavors. Now 5 years in my cellar, that mead could pass for a top Sauterne from the early 80s. The orange blossom bouquet is perhaps more distinct now with some bottle age but it is accompanied by a flood of rich scents and flavors suggesting ripe pineapple, persimmon and kumquat. It is rich and full bodied in the mouth and an opulent golden color in the glass. Though the sugars are very high, the acidity remains so as well keeping the mead perfectly balanced. Crissy is a master! Thank you Chrissy and Kooroosh! And just in case you readers are thinking Yamhill is too far from Portland, try leaving the city early one Saturday or Sunday morning, take the Sylvan exit off of 26 and proceed out Scholls Ferry Road past the monstrous new high school at the urban growth boundary. Then let Google Maps take you the back way from there. It is a beautiful and serene drive. read more

I've been dreaming about going in on a quarter cow or pig for a few years now (yes, I have sort of boring dreams), and this was finally the year. I'm SO glad that I went with Kookoolan farms! Chrissie was fantastic through the entire process, and particularly tolerant of my many questions while I was ordering. I picked up my quarter Berkshire pasture-raised pig today, in idyllic Western Oregon fruit and wine country, and it's already exceeded my expectations across the board. I was raised on homegrown, pastured beef and lamb, spec'd just like Kookoolan Farms (KF) does with their stock. Now that my Dad has moved on to that BIG ranch he always dreamed about, I'm now on my second order from KF: half-sides each of beef and lamb (which, yes, I prefer spring lamb). My 10-cu.ft. chest freezer is filled to capacity with just enough room left over for butter, bacon, and fresh Oregon fish such as tuna and salmon. I use my fridge freezer for veg, fruit and ice cream, and lovely servings of beef/lamb stew, soups, broths (ice cube trays work wonders here and save space). System works admirably. It seems expensive, but when you KNOW that the pound of ground beef you're making spaghetti from came from ONE local cow and not 100's from who knows where, and you're getting local, nourished meat that hasn't been feedlotted, is mobile-slaughtered and butchered locally, you eat a little easier. And bonus point: grass-fed from birth to mobile butcher means higher OMEGA-3's in your flavorful fat. While that may sound gross to some, keep in mind that fat=flavor. Exercise your molars and support these people for they know how to go about it. read more

My husband and I eat a seafood-based diet and we were so pleased when Kookoolan started offering salmon and halibut shares this year. Both have been outstanding in quality and convenience. Recently I defrosted some halibut but didn't get a chance to cook it, so I re-froze it and then defrosted it and cooked it--and it was still delicious and moist. I'm looking forward to getting the shrimp soon. Kookoolan's recent venture into selling seafood has opened my eyes as to what good seafood tastes like. The flavor of the shrimp, cod, etc. has been noticeably better than any seafood I have ever tasted. I'm eating more seafood than at any other point in my life because this is a real treat now.
