Cute spot with two levels of book selections as well as some gift items. We visited around Christmas time and enjoyed that they had a few handmade ornaments for sale, in addition to the expected books. Upstairs, the place was festively decorated with Christmas trees. Really nice selection of cookbooks. Service was a little standoffish but I think that may have been because it was close to closing time when we visited. read more

What a lovely book shop and one of the staff members did a beautfiul gift wrapping job on a signed book I had purchased. We were disappointed that we missed the Elin Hildebrand book signing and recognize that we should have arrived to the store earlier. Upon arrival the woman who was in charge of organizing the whole event was pretty flippant about the whole thing. Customer service goes a long way and on some people the art of customer service is lost. read more

Absolutely adorable book store! They have a whole floor devoted to local writers and local history. I also loved that they host book signings for free. Some of the employees are a little stone faced but others are super friendly. read more

Local bookstores can be hard to find these days. And when I do find them, I tend to want to patronize them. Not so much Mitchell's on Nantucket. I've been in here a few times and honestly, I don't think anyone has ever greeted me or offered to assist me. I'm a voracious reader and had brought my most recent list of books I wanted to buy with me to Nantucket. I guess the optimist in me keeps hoping the previous experiences with dismal service were aberrations. I'll cut to the chase: they're not aberrations. I got to the store fairly soon after it opened. There was only the saleswoman and one other person there at the time. The two of them were in what seemed like some kind of personal discussion about something the woman wanted to sell or consign to the salesperson. I walked around the store for about 10 minutes or so without the salesperson acknowledging me or asking me if I needed help. I then proceeded upstairs, looked around for another 10 or so minutes. I did take advantage of using the very nice and very clean and very much appreciated loo. I came back downstairs. These two women were still yakking away. I apparently was invisible. . So you know what? I decided that enough is enough with this place. This bookstore didn't get my business that day nor will they in the future. Bye bye and good luck. One star for the non-existent service with another one added for the clean and available to the public bathroom. read more

Michell's doesn't have the charm or personality like Bookworks, but it earns big points for a Nantucket-only related room, which included novels, nonfiction, and coffee table books. I found the organization of this store a little strange; for example, the fiction was split up into different parts of the store. However, if for some reason you're craving a book and you're right there, it's worth a stop inside. read more

I have been shopping here for too many years to say. I have memories buying books as a child. Dad used to wait outside on the bench for me. Great selection and a sales staff that is happy to make great recommendations. I could spend hours in here. It's pretty tight so not conducive for hanging out but still, it's a worthwhile stop on your Nantucket adventure. read more

THE CUTEST. I bought a book from the recommended section, browsed the local books, astronomy, nature and bird section, had a wonderfully fun conversation with the man manning the cash register about my experience at the Columbia Publishing Course, and was generally charmed by this sweet, cozy nook of a book shop. read more

My partner and I love bookshops and make a point to visit independent shops everywhere we go and make a purchase to help keep them open We walked into Mitchell's and the sales lady didn't welcome us or speak to us. We were the only ones in the shop. A little while later, she declared that she was going upstairs. It wasn't clear to us whether that meant we should leave or that she was just not going to be available to help us (not that she was helping us anyway). We continued to browse a little while longer and left. For what it's worth, we had a lovely time visiting the other bookshop on the island and were glad to spend our money where our presence was acknowledged. p.s. The recent five-star reviews might be helpful or noteworthy if they weren't made by people who've only reviewed Mitchell's and no other businesses. Suspicous. read more

I love bookstores and naturally, I gravitated to this one as soon as I spotted its name on a brochure somewhere. What did I really like about this bookstore? Hands down, it was the Travel section which had such a good collection of travel writing. I loved that they had seating upstairs just near this section. I found two titles by Alice Steinbach that were once on my list of to-reads, but I'm glad I read through the intro only to realize I needed to erm.. cross it out from the aforementioned list. There were some really exotic titles that I was positive I hadn't seen in other bookshops. This is one of the few places that has affordable stuff unlike the other tourist-traps aka ridiculously expensive stores around the island. They have a special Nantucket section too bang opposite the entrance, which is really special and unique. Who knew there was so much literature on one tiny albeit very charming island apart from one famous Moby Dick?! Not me, at least. Oh, and worth a mention is the restroom here too, which is very elegantly done, which is very befitting for the chic Main Street. The upper floor apart from having a lovely restroom also is very silent and inviting for someone who would want to rest on their comfy seats while reading pages and enjoying the rays of the afternoon sunlight streaming in through the large windows on one of the walls. It might also be because there was hardly anyone around the bookstore at all. The ambience here is what I want to describe as Scandinavianly zen and is so characteristic of the elegantly rich and unique history and culture of Nantucket itself. Points only for the ambience, location and the Travel and Nantucket sections. read more

I won't pretend like I know how difficult it must be to run a bookstore in a place like Nantucket. This one has something I find in common with all Cape Cod bookstores: it's trying to be all things to all people, and ends up falling just a tad short in each of those things, but mainly in selection. For my tastes, the non-fiction section could be expanded quite a bit, and there seems to be so much space used for other things, huge kids' section, little gifts, and decorative elements that, again for my tastes, seem a little superfluous. All in all I would of course go back and give support to a bookstore on this island, and, truth be told, it really is a lovely little shop. read more

Visited on a summer Thursday. After reading the other reviews, I half-listened to the staff as I browsed. They were universally helpful to a series of people with 'where can I find' queries, books on hold, and even questions about where to eat. They weren't roaming the stacks asking if people needed help, but I think a lot of people (including me) prefer that. The store has a good selection given the size of the space. There's good depth of contemporary fiction and current events / history, and seemed 'weak' (a good thing) on pop bestsellers you can pick up anywhere. I had to wait a minute before someone came up front to check me out, but the lady apologized and we had a nice chat about my selection. Maybe the earlier reviewers have a different customer service expectation. Mitchell's was just fine for me. read more

Good bookstore. A lot of reviews complain about the service. The folks in there DONT BOTHER YOU. I overheard a couple of folks ask for help and the staff was super knowledgable and helpful. I liked not being pestered or rushed in the store. Good curated selection that I really appreciated. I would have liked more SF but that's a minor complaint. I'd rather have a small selection of good stuff that the folks there have read and think is worth reading. read more

I have been going to Mitchell's for years. I have however, noticed one thing: since Mimi passed over the bar it has changed. They do have literature that you won't find at BN, and that's what sets them above the rest. The other bookstore on the island is also pretty good. read more

It stinks. Like the other "bookstore" on island, it doesn't really have a selection, just a bunch of pop bestsellers that cater to the island's vapid summer crowd. Both places have a bunch of stuff for the kiddies, and plenty of screaming children in the store to accompany it...I will say one nice thing, I noticed they carried a copy of The Master and Margarita, for whatever that's worth... read more

Many visitors to Nantucket over the years assume that Bookworks is the only Bookstore on Nantucket and say so, when that is not true. Mitchell's Book Corner has been around for years and is a no frills bookstore. It has a special Nantucket room where you can find all sorts of categories from historical books to seafaring books about the island. The employees at Mitchell's are very attentive to customers and truly courteous! Here are some of my experiences with the current Bookworks: Walk in, ignored by the clerks at the counter, no smile , no "may I help you". once I even had a clerk tell me that my "credit card seemed well used" and that is why she had to "scan it twice," come now!!! The staff is scatty, if using the European measure of service, this place is dreadful! The nick knacks are overcrowded and displayed inefficiently, the place is claustraphobic ! Often you will experience a person or two behind the counter very busy in personal conversation and you stand there waiting to be served. While this place is in a good location, it is not worth it, you can do better on the Mainland, say Barnes and Noble!!! while Mitchells is worth the visit to soak in the real Nantucket atmosphere. read more

Mitchell's Book Corner is my absolute favorite place to visit on my absolute favorite island! I am a serious bookstore junky and this place has everything I'm looking for: Eclectic titles with a particular focus on all things Nantucket, a friendly and knowledgeable staff( including a local book nerd/heartthrob named Ian or Ewan or something like that!!!), and a beautiful layout that just demands you to pick up your favorite title find a comfortable chair and READ! Mitchell's is everything the big book chains are not and cannot ever be. The staff is well read and seemingly happy to discuss plot and meter and narrative or anything book related at all and to spend enough time with you to give personalized recommendations. If you haven't visited Mitchell's recently, it is worth the time to stop in. The store is packed with great books (naturally) and so much more. The store has been recently renovated. The green renovation balanced the unique history and feel of the store, while beautifully taking it into the 21 century. The elevator with underwater scene is only one of nice art like pieces in the store. The staff are helpful, knowledgeable, well read, and interesting to speak with. The upstairs of the store houses a beautiful and comfortable Nantucket Room with books about everything Nantucket- sailing, travel, history, lore, DVDs, local writer's works, and even WIFI to connect you to the outside world. If that's not enough there is often something to do on a Friday night. The events listed on the wall behind the counter had a young voter's forum, book groups, poetry readings, and a different speaker every week focusing on food. If you value having two bookstores on the island please make the time to stop in a buy something from a real person selling real books! read more
